Chapter 2: Shame

There he sat naked, wet, confused, and horrified. “Why is this happening? What exactly is happening?” Kiba stared at the spot where Naruto was and brought his knees to his chin. As he hugged his knees to his chest, tears began to well up in his eyes. What was going to happen to their friendship now that Naruto thought Kiba was some queer pervert? Kiba shut his eyes and tried to pretend nothing happened. His attempt was in vain as the scene flashed repeatedly when he closed his eyes.

“Stupid! Why am I so stupid?!” Kiba berated himself. After a few minutes of scolding himself, he decided it was better to try and think things through calmly. Where to start? First questions first.

‘Does Naruto hate you?’ he thought to himself. “I don’t know..” Kiba mumbled to himself out loud as if answering a question the nearby rock was asking. ‘Should you approach him, or should he approach you?’ “I don’t know” he mumbled again to himself. ‘What should you do next?’ “I still don’t know!” he yelled at the imaginary interviewer. The water in his eyes started to fall. “I don’t know what I should do next, but I know that sitting around here isn’t going to help anything.” he whispered to himself.

Finally Kiba stood up and tied a towel around his waist as he walked toward the dressing room. As he dried off and got dressed, he thought about his options dealing with the situation.

‘I can go to him and try to work things out between us. But if things don’t work out they can end really ugly. Maybe it’s best to wait for him to come to me.’ He argued with himself. ‘What if he is starting to hate me though, and the longer I wait to talk to him, the more he’ll hate me?’ After he finished dressing himself, he continued his argument with himself on his way home. “I should just go home and sleep” he thought to himself.

“51.. 52.. 53... 54..” Naruto muttered to himself while doing push ups in the cold night on the training ground. This was his attempt to get things off his mind. ‘I can’t stop thinking about him’ he mentally noted. ‘Focus on your exercise!’ Naruto thought as he started getting frustrated with himself.

He didn’t want to think about what had happened. He just wanted to clear his mind and make sure that he wouldn’t get found. He decided that if he had gone home, the person he was trying hard not to think about might find him.

“92.. 93... 94..” Naruto said a little louder as he began to struggle. There was just too much happening in his mind to focus his training. He stopped and decided to sit on the grass. He started to get a little cold as he didn’t really get to dry off, and he was still half-naked. When he had arrived at the training ground in a rush, he just tossed his shirt and jacket to the ground and began a work out.

There he sat, waiting for an answer to come to him as he stared at the stars that were gradually becoming more visible in the night sky. His mind was racing with problems, questions, and any possible answer he could think of. After a few minutes of his pseudo-meditation, he was interrupted by an audible thought.

“I’m not sure what is more shocking.” said a very deep voice that clearly had the ring of years of experience in it. Naruto shot his head in the direction of the voice half in shock, and half in delight. “Is it the fact that you stopped training after just starting, or that you’re training at night with no shirt on, and wet hair that is more startling?” continued the old man. “I know you’re not the sharpest tool in the shed, but even you should know that you shouldn’t be trying to get sick.”

Naruto half smiled at that and replied. “Hey pervy sage. What’s up?”

Slightly irritated by the name he replied through gritted teeth.“I should be asking you that.”

“I’m just training” Naruto told him as he tried to hide any features from his face that might give away the fact that something very troubling was on his mind.

“Don’t lie to me, kid. Tell you what. Tell me what’s wrong and I’ll teach you a new jutsu!” bribed the old man. He knew that was an offer Naruto could not refuse.

Naruto pondered this a moment. ‘What will he think of me if I tell him about what happened with Kiba? I really want to learn something new, but I don’t think its worth telling him what’s really wrong. Maybe I can lie to him’.

“Well pervy sage. If you insist!” Naruto grinned so widely it seemed fake. It was fake. “Sakura didn’t want to go out to eat with me today.” he aid with a depressed facial expression. Technically this wasn’t a lie. It really did happen, although that was no what was on his mind, and it certainly wasn’t as troubling as what was on his mind.

“Oh yeah? I thought you were over her. What happened to that?” Jiraiya quizzed with a serious look on his face.

“Oh.. Well.. Uh.. You see…” Naruto stuttered.

“Let me give you something to think about.” Jiraiya said as he took a seat on the ground next to Naruto.

‘Oh great.’ Naruto thought. ‘Just what I needed; more to think about.’

Jiraiya looked up to the stars and then in to Naruto’s face. “When things get confusing, stop thinking about them. Everything happens for a reason. Nobody ever said it has to be a good reason, but what is intended will happen eventually. If you beat yourself up over things you have no control over, you will only hurt yourself and the people around you.” Jiraiya said as he stared at the sky reminiscing the time when Orochimaru was part of his squad. He also could not help but think about how things have changed dramatically since those years.

“Just as I thought.” Naruto stated with a bored look on his face. “More useless crap to digest.”

“Look, punk! Nothing I say is useless!” Jiraiya defended. He stood up and stared down at Naruto with seemingly understanding eyes. Naruto just looked back blankly.

“You should put your clothes on, before you get sick. Go home and go to sleep, it’s past your bedtime.” and with that Jiraiya walked away leaving Naruto alone again. Naruto stared blankly in the direction Jiraiya went.

‘I guess he has a point about not getting sick. But that was just a bunch of useless crap.’ Naruto stood up and put the rest of his clothes on. Then, with one last look up at the sky before walking through the maze of trees to get back to his home, he saw his answer. There he was sparkling in the sky. Naruto connected the dots in the sky to make Kiba’s face. That was when he realized he cared more for Kiba than he let on for himself.

“Maybe I should go visit him first thing in the morning.” Naruto said to himself. ‘He probably hates me right now, so I’ll just wait for him to cool off and forget about the night.’

“I’m home!” Kiba said as he opened his front door and walked in. There was no reply. ‘how strange’ Kiba thought. ‘where’s Akamaru?’ Kiba stared around in the dark. He walked toward his room when he felt a presence in his home. “Who’s there!” he shouted into the dark. He sniffed around but for some reason he could not smell anyone or anything familiar. He made his way to the nearest light switch in order to see clearly. There he was, sitting on the couch. “Naruto! Why are you here?! You left me at the spring to break into my house?!” Kiba stared with a very annoyed expression on his face at Naruto.

“I’m sorry babe. I didn’t realize I hurt you.” replied Naruto from the couch. How could he resist an apology like that? Kiba blinked and smiled. Immediately his smile was gone from his face. “Where did he go?” Kiba thought in confusion as he stared at the couch. “Where did who go?” came Naruto’s voice from behind. Kiba whirled around in shock.

“How did you get there that fast?!” Kiba asked confused.

Naruto grinned at the question. “I’m a ninja, believe it!” he said.

“No shit, but you’re not that good of a ninja!” Kiba stared at Naruto suspiciously.

“I’ve been doing a lot of training. Why don’t you believe me?” Naruto questioned.

“Why can’t I smell you? Where is Akamaru?!” Kiba demanded.

“I’m getting really sick of your accusations, Kiba!” Naruto growled.

Suddenly Naruto disappeared in thin air, and there was a sharp pain followed by warmth in his side.

Kiba turned around and there was blood everywhere. Akamaru lie dead on the ground and bloody. “What the fuck is going on here?!” Kiba shouted.

Naruto giggled a little and it hit Kiba. He decided to test his theory. “Who the hell are you?” Kiba shouted as he ran at Naruto. He hit Naruto square in the face. He could feel it but it didn’t feel completely right. The Naruto that was grinning at him fell apart into a million flower petals. He was definitely trapped in genjutsu. Suddenly there was a fierce pressure in his stomach. Kiba fell to the floor in pain.

He was not ready at all to be ambushed in his own home. Someone really wanted to get rid of him and caught him off guard. But who? And why? Was he going to die here in his own home? With a last attempt, he tried to find out who was behind all of it. “release!” Kiba called as he tried to release the genjutsu he was clearly trapped in.

The fake setting fell as reality became clear. Kiba stared up at his pink-haired attacker in shock. “Why Sakura?” Kiba questioned in pain. In a panic, not knowing what to do now that Kiba knew who attacked him, she lunged forward and gave Kiba a final punch to the face.

Sasuke quickly left Kiba’s house and made haste toward his own home.

There Kiba was; alone, bloody, bruised, unconscious, and sprawled out on his living room floor.
