Chapter 3: Regret
At the crack of dawn something unusual happened. Naruto, lazy as can be, woke up. He was physically conscious, and he knew he was awake, but he didn’t want to be awake and kept his eyes closed. He rolled around in his bed in the hope that something would become clear to him, and suddenly the world would make sense. That epiphany, however, did not come. Finally he managed to roll so he was facing the direction of his alarm clock, and a chink in his eyelids allowed blurred vision to seep through. He stared at the clock in confusion.
‘Why am I awake so early?’ Naruto grumbled in his thoughts. He looked up and realized his room was slightly lit and he stared out the window in his room that had a good view of the sunrise. Finally, he groggily made his way out of bed. Because he only slept in a pair of boxers, the chilly air of morning hit him like a tennis ball at the Wimbledon Championships.
Teeth shattering and body shivering, Naruto searched for his orange pants and a clean-looking black t-shirt on the floor of his messy room.
‘I’m not sleepy enough to go back to sleep, but it’s too early to do anything.’ He thought to himself. Naruto put on his sandals, and waited for an idea to come to him. He sat on his bed, looked at the clock, and stared out his window again. It was about 5:47 in the morning so his options were limited. He could wake up a friend, train, or wake up a friend and train with them.
“I guess I can at least eat something while I figure this out.” Naruto mumbled to himself as he started unwrapping a package of instant ramen.
One bowl of instant ramen later, Naruto made his decision to go by Kiba’s house. If he started walking, he could make it there by 6:30 and at least it wouldn’t be as early as it would have been. ‘Besides’, Naruto thought ‘I’m pretty sure he gets up early to train with Akamaru in the forest’.
With that thought, Naruto threw on his orange jacket and headed in the direction of Kiba’s house.
“It’s so c-c-cold-d-d-d” Naruto muttered to himself as he walked through the morning air hugging himself.
Two knocks sounded on the door of Kiba’s house, but there was no answer. “He’s probably out training already. I should look for him anyway. I still need to apologize for last night” Naruto thought to himself.
As he did an about face and started walking towards the forest he heard a voice from behind him.
“He’s at the hospital with my mother.” said Hana, standing at the door of the once thought empty house.
“What happened to your mom?” Naruto said oblivious to the situation.
Hana grimaced as she realized she would probably have to tell him what she knows. Which wasn’t much. Tsume and Hana were on an overnight mission and got back early in the morning. Although they didn’t need him, Akamaru went along for the sake of getting out of the village.
When they walked in the door they found Kiba lying motionless and unconscious on the floor with dried blood attached to himself. Hana, being a medical ninja, checked to make sure Kiba was still alive. As soon as she confirmed it, Tsume had grabbed Kiba in her arms and raced to the hospital with him. “Come in and have a seat. I’ll make you some tea or something.” Hana said as she waved him into the house. She began telling Naruto the story as she knew it.
“I stayed to clean up the mess here. So far we don’t know who did it, or why they did it.” Hana continued to tell Naruto.
Naruto sat there, sipping tea and absorbing all of the information that he just received. How in the world could this have happened? Naruto felt a sharp pain crushing his chest; more specifically, his heart.
“Lady Tsunade is treating Kiba herself so he will hopefully make a quick recovery.” Hana said reassuringly as she saw Naruto’s face fall faster than Rock Lee can run without his training weights.
Naruto was disappointed. He stood up and thought about the last scene he had with him. ‘I ran away from him, probably made him feel like crap, and I didn’t even say bye. He could have died and I’d have that on my conscious for the rest of my life.’ Naruto thought to himself. “I’m going to go visit him.” Naruto said as he turned away from Hana. “Thanks for the tea, I’ll see you around!”
With that said, Naruto made his way toward the hospital. Anger and revenge coursed through his veins the closer he got to the building. He could literally feel the nine-tailed demon fox within him rising to break free. He wanted whoever hurt Kiba to feel a horrible pain.
Finally Naruto got to the front desk where he met Sakura working.
“Why are you hear, Naruto? Come to bug me at work, now?” Sakura questioned Naruto with a bored look on her face.
Naruto was furious. He wanted to find someone important to him, and Sakura was trying to play stupid games. “Sometimes you’re too stupid to realize you’re not the center of the world! Now shut up, and tell me where I can find granny Tsunade and Kiba!” Naruto yelled forcing himself not to actually hit her. He was so furious he didn’t even realize that Sakura was actually working there. Since when did she have a job as the receptionist at the hospital? None of that mattered, anyway. Naruto was on a self-imposed mission to discover what exactly happened and when exactly happened to Kiba.
Reluctantly, Sakura told Naruto where Lady Tsunade was and he practically ran in that direction.
When he walked into the room Tsunade was telling Tsume that Kiba would need to stay in the hospital for a night or two until he fully recovered. Tsume agreed, shook her head, and stared at Naruto.
“Hokage-sama, you better make sure something about this happens so I know how this happened. If you don’t take it upon yourself to take care of the brat that did this to My Kiba, I will find and take care of them myself!” Tsume told Tsunade in an angry voice.
“I’m going to do everything I can about this. As a ninja of the Leaf Village, he is an important part of my considerations, I can assure you of that. Just go home and try to relax. If we learn anything new here we will inform you right away.” Tsunade said as she tried to console the angry, yet depressed mother.
“Granny Tsunade!”, Naruto started “how long will it take for him to get better?” Naruto desperately asked Tsunade.
“Look kid, I have a lot of work to do right now. It shouldn’t take long for him to heal, considering it really was just a bad beating and nothing too serious. He’s just unconscious for now, so come back in a few hours, and he’ll probably be awake.” Tsunade said to Naruto.
“Everyone needs to clear the room and give Kiba some space” Tsunade said looking back and forth between Tsume and Naruto.
“Fine. I’ll be back” Naruto said in defeat. At least from what he got to see, Kiba was looking better than how Hana had described him. He left the hospital to go window shopping for a while.
Tsume was reluctant to leave the room away from Kiba but in the end, for a ninja, it really was just a few scratches and bruises. She had suffered worse before. It was just her motherly instinct when she saw he was unconscious to be worried. She went home with the promise that if something new was learned she would be alerted immediately.
Tsunade went to her office to do some paper work as she thought about what had happened. She had Sakura doing rounds every 10 mins up to the room to see if Kiba had started to gain consciousness.
After a few hours of laying in bed after being healed, Kiba started to gain consciousness.
