The Funeral That Was Never Meant To Be
----------------------------------------------------

How did this happen? I refuse to believe this. He looked up from his seat, indeed this was not a dream. The white carved coffin would be buried under six feet of dirt in less than an hour. There, he saw. In the picture she was smiling timidly as usual. The thought of never ever seeing her blush again, never hear stumble on her words, never see her pointing her fingers together sent shivers down his spine. At that moment Neji hated himself. Forgive me father, I failed my duty. The only duty you gave me, I failed it. He used it as an excuse when it was his turn to give a farewell speech. Deep down, he knows, his little cousin is gone forever and somehow blamed himself for it.

Hiashi ended the ceremony with an official customary speech.
“Daughter, you could have been something more if fate wasn't so cruel. Rest in peace”
With that, the entire congregation followed the now moving white coffin out of the Hyuuga manor towards the family burial ground. Almost everyone that mattered to Hinata was there. Shino, Kiba and Kurenai sensei were the ones who took it hardest.

“She died in mission, Kurenai. Things like this were bound to happen. You know this, and have been trained for this. Now, don't let this jeopardize your relationship as sensei and as a jounin of Konoha.” Tsunade never thought she saw Kurenai so broken and upset over something. No doubt, she knew Hinata's ordeal with the Hyuuga, she remembered Hinata's pain of not being wanted. She thought she could've help change Hiashi's mind. She was too late, it doesn't matter now.

Kiba and Shino carried the same burdensome guilt. Head's down, Shino never uttered a word, Kiba on the other hand was seen sobbing by himself with only Akamaru to comfort him. And so, Team Kurenai had lost a team member. Tsunade promised a replacement for Team Kurenai.

“No one can replace Hinata!” Kiba shouted angrily.
It was just an hour before the funeral that the Godaime called Team Kurenai in to give them counseling.
“Calm down, Kiba” Shino spoke with an emotionless voice.
He of all people was good at hiding his feelings. Some call it a skill. If it weren't for those `skills' he would have lost it the moment he stepped into the Hyuuga manor.
“Death is something we as Shinobi's must learn to embrace, be it out loved ones or even those we don't know. I've learnt this the hard way..” her voice trailed off. Silence in the room. All of them knew she had a past pain but only Kurenai had an idea.
“That's why we must put this being us, and move on. Other wise life will be wasted.”

Everyone had put on their solemn face. Whether they were truly sad or not was unknown. For all they care, it was the Hyuuga's who benefit from her death. Hinata's reputation of being a failure was infamous. Now that she was out of the picture, the new heiress can be properly crowned. Without messy explanations, her death was actually profited. It's not that anyone in the Hyuuga manor would miss her company. She never really socialized with anyone ever since her father almost disowned her and left her to Kurenai. She was more like the caged bird, for all they knew, she was useless.

“I can't believe Hinata's gone.” Sakura said to no one in particular.
“We'll miss her” Naruto said. He seemed distressed, not because he knew Hinata was fond of him, but because he broke his `way of the shinobi'. He allowed a friend to die.

Team Kurenai, were in their darkest moments. They knew. The coffin was empty.

“Hinata watch out!” Shino yelled as the rocks beneath her feet were crumbling.
“Kurenai sensei, what's Hinata doing?” Kiba asked while dodging a few shurikens.
“Shino, take them out now! We have a problem” Kurenai knew. She saw it in Hinata's eyes. They were in pain and tourment.
Kuchiyose no Jutsu Shino summed a shower of giant leaches. The leaches rained down and took out the enemies within minutes.
All attention was now paid to the figure by the cliff.
“Arigato sensei.” Hinata mumbled.
“Hinata, stop! What are you doing? Get away from that falling cliff!” Kurenai yelled
“ Shino, what's Hinata doing?” Kiba unintentionally shouted Akamaru showed his concerns too.
“Tell them I died in battle, and the body was never recovered.” Hinata said, loud enough for them to hear.
She jumped.
Shino immediately released a chain of his bugs to catch Hinata. They swarmed around and ménage to grab hold of her wrist, she stopped there for a moment, hanging two hundred meters above the air.
They rushed to the end of the cliff to see Hinata looking up at them. Hinata's left hand was holding a kunai, it was glowing with her chakra. She looked at them.
“Sayonara” she whispered and cut of the bug-rope, freefalling into the mist.
