Naruto Fan Fiction ❯ World Collision ❯ Restlessness ( Chapter 47 )
[ P - Pre-Teen ]
As she slowly slid an eye open, Jessica squint her eyes they were met with the warm, orange glow of the fire. Glancing over the area she could see from the spot she laid, she found most of everything to be painted over with the blackness of the night still. How long had it been? She had been sure when she went to sleep before hand that she'd sleep soundly from her tiredness that only one of Deidara's sharp kicks or battle cries would wake her the next morning. Pushing herself up until she was propped up against her elbows, she then found that the left side of her face and any other part of her skin that lay directly on the ground was imprinted with grass markings. Rolling her eyes slightly, she then rubbed them; it always annoyed her to see the red impressions that snaked all over her skin. On any one really, she just found the grass marks and stains to be a negative distraction to her eyes. Looking up again as her eyes started to adjust to the lighting; she found that Tobi now sat across from the fire where Deidara used to sit. Looking back and forth again slightly, she couldn't catch sight of her master. Where could he have gone?
“Tobi-san,” she said in a low voice that she doubted the man could detect. To her surprise, he seemed to have heard her perfectly fine as he removed his gaze from the sky to look at her.
“What is it Jessica-chan? Do you need to go relieve yourself?” He asked as he looked at the girl who immediately pasted a wrinkled look on her face.
“No, why on earth would you ask that? I was wondering where Deidara-sama is.” She replied quickly in a hoarse voice.
“Oh,” the masked man said as he pointed to something beside her. “He's right there; didn't you notice? His feet have pretty much been in your face for the past hour.” Turning her head to the side, she jumped a bit as she found that the man hadn't been exaggerating.
“How on earth did I not notice that?” she asked as she lightly poked at the man's foot in an attempted to move it, “and what on earth is that? I don't even want to say what I think that is on the bottom of his shoe, but I can smell it over the fire now that I concentrate on it. Uh, couldn't he have the decency to make sure his feet wouldn't go into my `area'? I mean, the rest of his body is like three feet away from me! It's as if he put his feet in my face on purpose!” Chuckling a bit, Tobi looked up at the sky again.
“Jessica-chan, you move in your sleep too; when you went to sleep, you were over there,” he said as he pointed. Finding him pointing in her direction, she looked at him as if he were crazy.
“Tobi-san, you're pointing to the same spot I'm in now…” She said as she slumped down to the ground again.
“No, you were a bit more to the left.” He said defending his claims as he threw out his finger again towards her. Sighing, Jessica shook her head as she traced from his finger to the spot he was pointing in.
“Wow, I may have moved what; two inches?” She mumbled as she laid her right cheek on her arm.
“Jessica-chan, why aren't you asleep?” He asked as he cocked his head slightly. Looking back up at him again, the girl shrugged.
“I don't know; I'm just restless I guess.” She replied as she let out a yawn. “I'm tired, but my eyes refuse to comply with the application my brain has given it.”
“Okay then… Why are you restless?” He pressed on. Looking at Tobi with a face that said `why are you still bugging me', she propped herself on her elbow again as she knew that he wouldn't stop bugging her until she gave a satisfying answer.
“How am I suppose to know that Tobi-san; sometimes you're just restless for no reason what so ever.”
“Oh, but Jessica-chan that isn't true; there's always a reason.” He replied as he leaned forwards on the log he had been sitting on. “There's got to be a reason for you then; what is it?”
“You don't know when to stop do you?” Jessica asked as she closed her eyes. After a moment of silence, she thought for a minute before replying. “Maybe I'm restless from the thought of my parents worrying, or the fact that I'm someone's property. Maybe I'm restless because I'm in a totally different world that is completely unfamiliar to me, or because I'm clueless about anything and everything that's going on around me. To tell the truth, there are so many confusing things going on in my life right now that I shove it all into the back of my head so that I don't have to deal with it. Take your pick in the choices I gave, I guess any of them could work since they've all been stressing me out in my spare time these past few months.” A silence then fell over them as the sound of the firewood snapping and the frogs and insects chirping took over.
“Jessica-chan, you just need a more positive view on things,” Tobi stated as if that were the answer to everything.
“Do you think I haven't tried?” Jessica snapped back, clearly more tired than she thought.
“Would both of you be quiet? I'm trying to sleep, so if you don't shut up someone will die, yeah.” A grouchy voice from beside her said. Fearing for herself for being the closest, she inched away before laying her head on her hands. As she closed her eyes, she looked through the blackness given over to her from her eyelids. Of course, nothing new happened; her mind was as active as ever. Sighing, she found that there wasn't much use in trying to force herself to sleep that way. How she felt now was how one feels when they sleep over at a friend's house and are forced to sleep on the ground. Of course for some this isn't a big issue, but for herself and anyone else who had a hard time going to sleep, you thought twice before deciding to sleep over at a person's house where you knew you'd have to sleep on the floor. At least when she'd sleep over at a friend's house, she'd have the option to watch the clock move it's hands until she was `hypnotized' to sleep from dizziness.
Rolling back over onto her back, she looked up at the few stars she could see shining through the gaps between the leaves of the trees. Counting each one, she found that each time she summed up to a different number than the last; of course. After trying this about fifteen times, she gave up and went on to holding her breath as long as she could as she did while waiting for her next booklet during state testing. Timing herself in her head, she found that she could only go for about thirty to forty seconds each time. She then thought of the idea of trying to hyperventilate herself to see what it would be like. After thinking about it for a minute though, she decided that it would be too much noise and the two men would notice it and surely question what on earth she was doing. Not wanting to make a total fool of herself, along with longing to keep the provoked side of her master away, she decided to just think.
“Just how long with this night go on for? It feels as if it will never end… I hate this feeling; why on earth do people have to get restless for? What's the point? It's not as if anything important is going on that I need to notice right now; I need to sleep so that I won't pass out before we stop again. I just can't wait till we stop traveling and just settle down somewhere, if that ever happens. I don't know what I'll do if I have to travel like this for the rest of my life. I'll probably die young from being over worked… I still don't get why we can't just fly everywhere; it would be much faster. I really wonder whether or not I'll be able to live a regular life anymore… I mean, will I ever have a place to call home anymore? The only thing that doesn't seem to change is Deidara-sama being my master, I being a slave slash `entertainment', eating those demented food pills that are very disappointing, drinking weird tasting water, and God being there for me. I don't get it… Is this just going to be my permanent life style now? Will anything change? Will I be able to make any real `friends'? Lord… Please help this cloud of confusion to clear from my mind… Please, I'm really mixed up inside right now…” She thought as she unconsciously fell asleep once again.
