CAPTER-02
Didn't want to start forging my destiny in Toky-3
To say that he was less then thrilled to be disembarked from the empty
train, and onto an equal deserted platform of Tokyo-3 train station,
would have been an understatement.
Shinji for his part was seriously having the creeps. Not only did he
not want to come to this place; he didn't even want to get close to
Toky-3. To him it just didn't fell right, a gut felling, and a six
sense. He didn't know what it was. The only thing he was sure about,
was own his uneasiness. No mater how hard he tried to dismiss the
felling, it just wouldn't stay for extended periods of time. The fact
he was tricked into coming, with the use of two letters from NERV that
were addressed to him. That just happened to be in short-shrift
possession, on that particular night a week ago, when he was barely
coherent, made Shinji a very worried person. Not only did
short-shrift, as Shinji had nick named the short, spiky hair man, have
Shinji drugged up to the point, where the young mans self restraint
and control were nearly none existent. He also set him up that night
for several different things. The one thing Shinji disliked above all,
he was suckered into as well.
The regeneration chamber is the one thing he dislikes above all other
things, yet he did fined him self-regaining conciseness in the liquid
filled chamber. He still couldn't recall a single detail on the events
that lead up to him being in the regeneration chamber, but the
evidence is more then obvious. He was striped down to his shorts; a
breathing mask covered his mouth and nose. He wasn't sure of any
thing, and he was about to shift into major panic mode. Just before
that happened, a thought crossed his mind.
; Short shrift, you did this to me;
Sure enough, his conclusion was right on the button. Short shrift had
every thing to do with the predicament Shinji found him self in, but
before the panic could set into him and become all. Shinji caught
sight of short-shrift, standing in front of the glass like dome,
covering the front of the regeneration chamber. There stood the short,
spiky hair man, the arrogant smile stretching across his mean looking
face. With just a glance to his left, a slight head nod to the medic
in front of a control council, short-shrift gave the command for the
knock out gas to be released into the breathing mask. With that simple
jester, he returned his attention onto a panic stricken Shinji, and
waived.
"I can't very well send you to Toky-3 in your state, now could I?"
That was the last thing Shinji remembered hearing and seeing. One
small inhale of the gas and he was out cold. When he came to, Shinji
immediately recalled the conversation he had with short shrift, before
he awoke with in the regeneration chamber. First on the list were the
NERV letters addressed to him. Shinji was told point blank by
short-shrift that he was ordered to read the letters and go to Toky-3.
Protesting a command that came from the very top it self was
pointless.
To his credit, Shinji rarely protested and disobeyed orders. Orders
from the very top he never argued with, or protested against. Even
under the influence of drugs, he possessed more then enough sense not
to argue with the orders.
Doing what he was ordered, Shinji read the letters. The first letter
had a rather short content.
From: NERV.
To: Shinji Ikari.
You are needed. Come to Toky-3. The security card and the train ticket
have been placed with in the letter.
Signed: Gandou Ikari. Commander of NERV.
The second letter was a cheerful one; it also came with a picture of a
purple hair woman, leaning over a car.
I'll come and pick you up at the train station. I've enclosed a
picture, so you would know who would be picking you up. Have a good
and safe trip. When you aware in Toky-3, I'm sure you'll love this
beautiful city, I'll gladly show you around.
Misato Katsuragi signed the letter
Even though his father signed the first letter. That meant very little
to Shinji, he didn't know the man and the letter it self made him fell
less then enthusiastic. The second letter on the other hand, was a bit
over cheerful, it outright worried him. Shinji, for his part had allot
more then he wanted on his mind. Uneasy and worried as he was, Shinji
didn't have a choice but to except things as they stood.
Now that he award at his destination, he found him self standing on
the platform all by him self. His black duffel bag clinched tightly in
the right hand, the long black trench coat, he was instructed to wear
by Short shrift, do to the coats protective and rather unique
properties. He had the coat on him self, the tainted sunglasses were
over his eyes, concealing his different colored eyes, his hair, as
always remained spiky. He resembled a junior bicker thug, or that is
what people would have thought, had any normal person seen him in the
current surroundings, but as things stood, there was nothing normal
about his surroundings.
Shinji took a quick scan of his surroundings, the lack of people,
birds and even insects made the uneasiness with in him grew even more
so then only moments ago.
Cautiously he made his way out of the deserted train station, and onto
the street. Stopping in his tracks, he took a quick look around him
and frowned at the empty streets, abandoned cars with there engines
still running littered the road, shops with no one behind the cashier
counter were left unattended.
"What is going on around here?" he asked him self, reached into his
left trench coat pocket and pulled out a neatly folded piece of paper.
Glancing at the number, he placed the piece of paper back into his
pocket and moved over to the closest phone both. Just as he was about
to pick up the phone, a gust of cool wind stopped him in his tracks.
Shinji felt him self being watched very carefully. Immediately he
focused on the deserted road behind him and frowned him self staring
at a blue hair girl with red eyes dressed in a school uniform standing
in the center of the road, staring directly at him.
From behind the sunglasses, he narrowed his eyes suspiciously.
Carefully looked over the pail skin girl and tilted his head slightly
to the lift, just as a gust of wind seem to form around the blue hair
girl, making her disappear from sight.
A barley noticeable hint of surprise etched it self on his unreadable
features.
; Not something a person sees every day; he shrugged his shoulders in
an unconcerned manner. ; Then again there are many such things
ordinary people will never see; a crooked grin of amusement touched
his thin lips. ; Even if some people see the unexplained, they will
convince them selves that it was all done with mirrors and smoke. That
it wasn't anything out of the ordinary; dismissing the rest of the
self-debate as pointless. Shinji stored the information of what he had
seen, the image of the pail skin girl in the back of his mind to be
annualized at another time, and returned to his original task at hand.
Placed the black duffel bag on the concrete, he leaned up against the
phone booth, and once again scanned the empty street of Toky-3, and
once again he was meet with nothing more then a silent and abandoned
city.
Unlike the busy, life thriving major cites he had seen during the
afternoon hours. Toky-3 was void of sound and movement of any kind, to
Shinji it resembled the exact description of an abandoned city,
lifeless, empty, with the bright scorching sun overhead that screamed.
: No one is welcomed:
He felt a cold chill go through him. "What a ode place." he muttered
to him self, as he recalled the announcement on the train before it
stopped at the station.
Toky-3 was under a special state of emergency. The reason for such a
drastic action was not given, not that it made any difference to him
at the moment.
His senses had come to life warning him to be on guard. Some thing had
stirred among the silence of the empty street. He heard the sound of a
car engine from a distance away coming closer. He didn't bother
turning around to see if it was coming down the street, nor did he
bother going in search of it. That was not what made his senses come
to life, there was something else, something he just couldn't place at
the moment.
Ones again his senses screamed at him to be on guard, a moment later
he felt a rather strong vibration under his feet.
"Earthquake!?" his gaze focused on the concrete beneath his feet, just
as he felt a second vibration, then a third. "Not a earthquake." he
muttered to him self, raised his head, and focused thoughtfully into
the distance of the street. "Wrong direction." pushing him self off
the telephone booth. Shinji for the first time since his arrival
turned his attention towards the city it self. "This is the right..."
trailing off as he seen a somewhat familiar car come from around a
corner at high speed, he placed his left hand into his pocket and
pulled out a picture. Carefully examined the photo of a young woman
wearing a T-shirt and cutoff jeans, leaning over a sports car, on the
top of the picture it read. I'LL PICK YOU UP singed. MISATO KATSURAGI.
On the right side of the picture was a drawn arrow pointing at the
breasts or the car, he was not sure witch one. Below it was written.
P.S. LIKE WHAT YOU SEE?
"Hmm!?" he muttered to him self, placed the picture back in to the
left, black trench coat pocket.
Hearing the screeching off brakes, he picked up his black duffel bag,
turned his attention to the sports car barely stopping a few feet away
from the phone booth. A moment later the woman from the picture got
out of the car. Although she was dressed in a knee high dark brown
skirt that showed off her figure quiet nicely and a red jacket that
might be part of a uniform, it was definitely her.
"Sorry I'm late Shinji," she said with some urgency in her tone. "I'm
Captain Katsuragi Misato, now get in the car we have to hurry."
"Eerrr...I'm Shinji, but you all ready seem know that." replied Shinji
in an uneasy tone, proceeded towards the passenger side of the car.
"Mrs. Katsuragi..."
"Call me Misato, and not Mrs. Misses or any other kind of formality.
It makes me fell old." she cut him off, and gave him a reassuring
smile.
Immediately, Shinji exsiccated a deep bow. "Sorry didn't mean to
insult you." he said sincerely, looked at the still smiling woman,
looked around him once again. "I wanted to know where the people of
the city are?"
Misato gave an unconcerned waive. "Don't worry, all the people are
safe. I'll explain every thing on the way." she answered in an urgent
tone, pointed at her car. "Hop in....."
The rest of her speech Shinji didn't register, he glanced at the
concrete beneath his feet, and a frown crossed his brow at the fell of
the vibration under his feet. ; Stronger; snapping his head up, he
focused in the direction of the city. ; Much stronger;
Misato fought the sudden urge to snap at the boy, who at the moment
was in some matter of a daze, and wasn't exactly paying attention to
her. "Shinji..."
"The vibrations are getting stronger, much..." suddenly his eyes
widened in surprise as he sensed an enormous surge of energy being
released.
; WHAT THE HELL WAS THAT!!??; his own mains screamed suddenly. "Th...
that...was not....good."
"Huh!?" mattered Misato in puzzlement, glanced at the direction Shinji
was staring in, and quickly returned her attention on him. There for
the first time she noticed that he was scared. Even with the sun
glasses concealing his eyes, there was no mistaking the fear etched on
his face. ; He's afraid, but...from what? What's got him so scared?;
she thought to her self, and once again focused her attention in the
general direction, he seemed to be staring. ; There's nothing
there...; suddenly her eyes widened, as she realized in what direction
he was staring. ; That's not possible.; she told her self, swallowed
hard. ; He couldn't possibly know about it, could he?; figuring that
she, her self was looking far to much into Shinjis sudden fear, Misato
turned her attention on him, and gave him a even calculating stare.
"Shinji, there's nothing in front of you."
Slowly Shinji shuck his head. "Not in front of me, but in that general
direction." he said with fear in his voice. "The vibrations... the
shire power."
Unnoticed by him, Misatos eyes had doubled in size from the unexpected
statement. ;How could he possibly know?; she asked her self, quickly
pushed the sudden surprise she felt out of her mind. "Shinji...."
hearing a explosion some distance away, Misato swung her head in the
direction Shinji was still staring in. "S#IT." she hissed in anger.
"The Angel must be nearing the city last line of....."
"Th...That was...massive." stuttered Shinji.
Misato shot him an angry glance. "How do you know that?" she snapped
in a demanding tone. "How could you possibly know anything about the
attacking Angel?"
Startled by her sudden, angry and demanding outburst, Shinji
immediately stepped away from the car. Confusion, fear, A woman asking
questions he was not permitted to answer. Attacking Angels. All this
was a little too much for Shinji to handle. ;Think fast Shinji. How do
I get my self out of this, with out reviling anything of importance?;
he thought to him self in a panic. ;There's got to be....; felling a
rather strong vibrating under his feet, he once again looked at the
concrete, quickly raised his head, only to catch Misato glancing at
her own feet, then in the direction on the city. ;Hmm!?; from behind
the sunglasses, Shinji narrowed his eyes thoughtfully. ;It would seem,
this time, she felt the vibration as well. That's it!; the resolution
to his problem struck him immediately. ;Tell her some of the truth,
with out volunteering any extra information, and point out that she
felt the vibration as well.;
With his attention locked squarely on the side of the woman's angry
face. He waited until she made eye contact. Slowly he began to shake
his head. "I didn't know anything about, whatever it is you call it. I
felt the vibrations just as you did, but unlike your self. I felt the
vibrations the moment I walked out of the station and onto the
street." he replied, turned his attention towards the city.
Misato raised an eyebrow. "Just how long ago did you arrive in
Toky-3?"
"I've been here 35 to 40 minutes now." he replied, turned his
attention on the purple hair woman. "What exactly did you mean by
attacking Angel?"
Misato flinched at the question. ; This is not good; she thought to
her self. ; If I tell him about the 40-meter tall monster attacking
the Geo-Front, he could very well decide to run away...;
"Caption, are you alright?" asked Shinji in an uncertain tone.
"Huh??" she muttered, snapping her self out of her thoughts. "Yes, I
fine."
"Good." Said Shinji in a satisfied voice, and asked. "Now about my
question..."
"I think it will be for the best if you see for your self." she cut
him off, and sat her self behind the drivers site, thinking. ; That
way you won't be able to just jump out of the car and make a run for
it;
Unseen by her, Shinji took a deep breath and exhaled in relief. ; That
was a little to close for comfort. I really have to watch what I'm
saying from now on; opening the passenger side door, he placed the
duffel bag on the car floor and sat him self down, careful not to
place his feet on the black bag. Immediately the entire car shifted
from the sudden and unexpected weight.
Startled by the sudden shifting, Misato involuntarily took a step back
and ran her wide eyes over her lop sided car for a few silent moments.
; He couldn't possibly weigh that much?; she shifted her gaze onto
Shinji sitting calmly in the passenger seat and blinked a few times. ;
Could he??; shifting her attention onto her lop sided car and just as
quickly shifting it back to Shinji, she came to the only logical
conclusion in her mind. ; The shocks on the passenger side are
worn-out. That's it, I have to get the shocks replaced; satisfied with
her own conclusion, Misato seat her self in the drivers seat and
floored it.
Shinji found him self pressed in the seat, at the sudden acceleration
of the car. ; WOW!?; was all his mind could manage.
"So what do you think?" asked Misato in a surprising cheerful tone.
Hearing the question, Shinji managed to regain enough of his senses,
only to find him self puzzled by her sudden mood change and question.
"About what exactly?" he finally asked with a grate deal of
uncertainty.
"The car, what else." replied Misato.
"Oh that, It's very nice, I especially like the color." he said looked
around him, finding the seat belt, he quickly buckled him self up and
thought. ; Your driving however is a different story.;
Driving down the deserted road with her foot pressing down on the gas
full throttle. Misato glanced to her right at the young man and looked
him over. His face was that of an average boy, with an exception or
two. Sunglasses hid his eyes. A scar could be seen above the right eye
and half way down the cheek. Misato immediately concluded that there
is more to the scare and the sunglasses then appearances would
suggest, but that wasn't some thing she was going to ask him about for
the time being. His black, spiky hair when down to the middle of his
back. Even with the trench coat on his person, she could easily make
out his well-built body.
Misato took a shallow breath, turned her attention on the road and
exhaled slowly.
; Oookaay, there's something definitely wrong here, kids are not
suppose to look like that; she thought to her self and asked. "Just
how old are you?"
"I'm not exactly sure. I was informed that I am fourteen. Personally,
I am having a hard time believing that." replied Shinji somewhat
puzzled by the sudden question. ; What an ode question to ask. Then
again it's time to have my questions answered; he thought to him self
and asked in return. "Where exactly are you taking me?"
"Take the while."
With out a word he did as he was instructed. Misato for her part
reached in to the glove compartment and pulled out a black manual.
Dropping the manual in his lap she took holed of the while, glanced at
Shinji staring at the manual questioningly.
"Read it carefully, it should answer some of your questions."
Examining the manual, Shinji ran his gaze over the single word written
in bold, red letters. "NERV." he whispered scowling at the manual as a
memory played it self out in front of him.
***"NERV is the front organization for SEELE." Came a harsh and
commanding voice from the darkness of the room. "Remember that when
they attempt to bring you under there control."
"Who...who...are you?" he recalled asking in a weak tone. "Wh...Why
can't I see anything?"
"You are not meant to know who I am, not yet any way." boomed the
harsh voice from the darkness. "In time you will learn of my identity,
that is all you need to know on the subject. Remember what I told you
about NERV, this is the first of many lessons you will get from me on
the particular subject."***
With the memory flashback finished, Shinji ones again found him self
in the car speeding down the road. "What exactly does NERV want with
me?"
Misato immediately stiffened in her seat. ; Blunt and straight to the
point. Damn it, I can't tell him the truth. The only option is to lie;
she thought to her self, looked at him with an uneasy expression on
her face. "It's noting bad, if that's what you're worried about."
Shinji adjusted his sunglasses, opened the NERV manual. "With all do
respect Captain Katsuragi. I would like to know what NERV wants with
me, as to it being good or bad. I would appreciate it very much if you
allow me to make my own conclusion on the mater."
This point blank explanation stunned the purple hair woman for a few
moments. All she could do was give him a wide eye glance and ask a
very ode question. "You sure you're fourteen?"
Shinji turned his head slowly tilted his head slightly to the right,
before answering in a puzzled tone. "As I stated earlier. I was told
that I am fourteen...Not that I believe it my self. Why do you ask?"
"Just checking." muttered Misato to her self. "Anyway," she said in a
loud voice. "You better read the manual, after all you are working for
NERV."
Surprise flashed on Shinjis face. "Excuse me?"
Misato snickered. "Ooh don't be such a baby, it's nothing bad, you'll
see there's nothing to worry about. Trust me, you'll like it."
From behind the sunglasses, Shinji raised his right-scared eyebrow. ;
Trust you, or NERV? Not in this live, or any....WHAT THE???;
Just as Misato came around a hill side and the entire city of Tokyo-3
came into view. Shinjis attention was immediately drown to the
opposite side of the city on a hill, where a colossal humanoid
standing 40 to 50 meter tall. With a bird like skull mounted between
its shoulders and a big red orb implanted in the center of its chest,
unleashed a cross blast towards a white pyramid.
Behind the sunglasses Shinjis eyes tripled in size. "WHAT THE HELL IS
THAT???"
Misato let out an angry growl. "Shit, I didn't know the Angel was that
close." Glancing at the gaping mouth young man in the passenger seat.
A croquet grin formed on her lips. "Don't be scared of it. We're
safe."
"Scared?" said Shinji, shuck his head. "I'm not scared in the
slightest."
"Of course you're not." Misato said in amusement. "After all you're a
brave...."
"Scared is to mild of a word." Shinji cut her off in a trembling voice
glanced at her for a moment. "You could try words like terrified and
petrified. You'll get the general idea how I'm feeling about now."
For some resin she couldn't explain her self, Shinjis words didn't
just shock her, they made her worry a grate deal. ; Damn it kids his
age should be cocky, they should try to impress people around them.
They're not suppose to be this blunt about the way they fell...;
"Why is that plain going over that ...that thing?" asked Shinji, his
attention seemingly focused up at the sky.
"Huh??" muttered Misato, snapping her self out of her own thoughts,
she glanced at Shinji. Just as quickly turned her attention in the
direction he was staring. Her eyes widened, as all the blood drained
from her face. "No." Came a dry, horrified shriek out of her mouth.
Slamming on the brakes, she jumped out of the car, ran over to the
passenger side and opened the door. "GET OUT NOW."
"Eh??" Shinji muttered to him self, quickly undid the seatbelt and got
out of the car as instructed. Carefully he looked the suddenly pail
face and frightened woman over.
; What's her.....;
"GET OVER TO THE DITCH NOW." She shouted frantically, ran directly for
the ditch.
Once again, Shinji did what he was told. Running to the ditch, he
watched Misato jumped inside and takes cover. Taking a deep breath, he
did the same. "Why are we doing this?"
"The U.N is about to drop a N2 device on the Angel."
Once again Shinji felt his own eyes tripled in size. ; A NONE
NUCLEAR...; before he could finish the thought, a bright flash of
light forced his eyes to close. The loud thundering explosion that
followed forced him to place his hands over his ear. As the pain
surged from the inside of his bleeding ears and into his head. The
sudden waive of heat struck him with such a force that every thing
around him when completely dark and silent.
Misato for her part attempted to help the now unconscious young man,
only to be caught by the force of the heat waive and her self be
rendered unconscious.
To be continued....
