Neon Genesis Evangelion Fan Fiction ❯ Protector ❯ Surrounded? ( Chapter 1 )

A/N: Okay I finally decided to try Evangelion fic. I hope it goes well.

Disclaimer: I don't Evangelion or any of its characters. I kind of own Alexander. I came up with the concept, and my friends at Pocket Otaku came up with a drawing. I paid them for it so I really do own it, but I still give them credit for the great drawing, which helps so much more to give the character depth.

"Baka-Shinji! I told you we would get lost if we took your stupid short-cut!"

"Sorry," mumbled Shinji was he walked behind a very pissed off German redhead.

Asuka spun around and glared, "Spineless wimp, can't you even stand up for your choices?"

"I recall this was your idea Pilot Soryu," stated Rei as she brought up the rear.

"Who asked you! Why are you following us anyway?"

"Major Katsuragi requested that I would come to her living quarters after finish the required tests."

Asuka was about to say something when she saw the end of the alley. She ran ahead and came out right in front of the apartment complex. She smiled victoriously, "I knew I was right! See Baka-Shinji, I told you MY short-cut would work."

Shinji just ignored her as he walked past her towards the complex. Asuka turned and saw Rei standing there staring at her, "What is it!"

"I believe that I understand now. If the detour was successful, it was your idea. However, if it failed, it was Pilot Ikari's idea."

Asuka's face grew red with anger as Rei walked past her and followed Shinji. She turned and stormed off.

Soon after, several Nerv agents took their posts guarding the children. They keep a keen eye for anything that may have appeared different or suspicious. They however did not notice the new group of people that were close behind.

A figure looked from his vantage point and smirked, "Simple fools. They don't even know what they are doing. You would think that they would protect their last hope with better people."

---Inside the Apartment---

"I do not understand Major. Evangelion Unit 01 already has a pilot."

Misato nodded while holding her head trying to figure things out for herself, "I know Rei, but these are the commander's orders. He told me to relay them to you and Shinji. Unit 00 will be put in Stasis, and Shinji will become the stand-by pilot." She then turned to Shinji, "You understand Shinji?"

"Um, yeah." Shinji would be lying if he said he was upset at the fact he had been take away from the living hell known as Evangelion, but he was also very concerned. His experiences with his father taught him that the commander always had a purpose. All he knew was that it involved Rei and Unit 01. 'What are you planning father?'

Rei stood to leave, "Is there anything else you require Major?"

"No, Shinji will walk you out." She shot a glance at the surprise pilot, "Won't you Shinji?"

Shinji stuttered a few moments until he heard something from Asuka. He did not hear it all but he did catch, "spineless wimp" and "pervert". Shinji balled his fist, but started to the door followed by Rei, "I'll be right back Misato."

Shinji and Rei walked to the Elevator. He pushed the button to summon it.

"I do not understand Pilot Ikari."

"What is that Ayanami?"

"Pilot Soryu often calls you unacceptable names. Why do you not defend yourself?" The elevator signaled that it had arrived at the floor, and the doors opened. Both entered as Shinji thought over his answer.

"It's not that easy Rei…I mean Ayan-"

"It is acceptable that you call me Rei, Pilot Ikari."

"Shinji."

Rei stared at Shinji with the same emotionless face.

"Please call me Shinji."

"Very well, I will take note of this request. Still, how is the situation more difficult as it appears?"

Shinji leaned his head back against the elevator wall, "Asuka has quite a temper. I don't want to be at the wrong end of it."

"I see. You do not defend yourself, because you do not wish Pilot Soryu to become…violent?"

Shinji chuckled, "Couldn't have put it better myself."

The doors opened. Shinji started to step out when Rei's hand shot out holding him back. Shinji looked at her. Rei's eyes scanned the area.

"Security has been breached."

"Huh?" Shinji followed Rei's gaze and saw a limp hand sticking out from behind a trashcan. A Nerv radio was just out of reach. Shinji looked around trying to spot the attackers.

Rei stiffened slightly, "They have surrounded the building. They are waiting for us to exit the building." She then shut the door to the elevator. She searched the panels until she found a loose one. She moved it. She reached into the gap that was made and pulled out two automatic guns. Shinji stared at her.

Rei noticed the look, "It is Nerv Protocol to allow for back up for this situation. Major Katsuragi did not advise you of such protocol?"

Shinji shook his head.

Rei extended a gun to Shinji, "We must secure the area."

"Wait a second Rei, shouldn't we like call someone or something?"

Rei shook her head, "I can secure the area. I have been trained for combat. You will simply serve as back up. I will get a bearing on their locations and then exit. All that is required of you is to make sure the rear flank is not invaded."

Shinji nodded.

"And Shinji-"

"Yes?"

"It would be quite unpleasureable if you shot me."

"I'll try not to."

Rei waited for a second and opened the doors. Two men were standing there with guns. Rei quickly shot both of them. She ducked back into the elevator as shots began to fire from near-by roofs. Rei took a quick look while they were reloading and then ducked back, "This is not acceptable."

"Huh?"

Rei motioned for the roofs across from the building. "There are 15 men on the adjacent roof. Also, I heard fire from the alleyway. I cannot shoot this many people with one clip. I will handle the units on the roof. You must handle those in the alley though."

"But I-"

Rei looked at Shinji, "You must do so Pilot Ikari. If we fail to secure the premises the Major's living quarters will be next."

"Asuka and Misato?"

"Correct."

Shinji took a deep breath and turned off the safety on his gun. They both whirled around ready to the barrage of gunfire. However, it never came. Instead in the middle of the street sat a pile of people dressed in gray. Shinji stared in astonishment, "But how?"

"That was just a warm up," came a voice from above them.

Rei raised her gun as she walked out. A figure jumped down in front of her.

"Poorly trained. Very poorly. I didn't even have to use both. Just one. Of course, they got a jump on your guys, what does that say?"

Rei kept her gun leveled at the figure. The figure was obviously male. He wore a white shirt with a black tie and black slacks. He wore a black trench coat over the shirt. The bangs of his long red hair hid his eyes. He looked up to show uncaring blue eyes. Eyes that seemed to not only be uncaring, but absolutely void of any chance of ever caring. Eyes that made Shinji almost want to look at Rei for just a chance at emotion. Shinji heard Rei prepare to shoot the figure. Then there was the sound of a something slicing metal, then metal hitting the ground. He looked at the two and saw the barrel of Rei's gun sliced off and on the ground. The figure then sheathed the Katana that he has drawn. He then adjusted his coat hiding the weapon.

"Now, I suppose that you two would like to go upstairs to call Nerv so they can question these guys."

Shinji nodded slowly.

The figure walked into the elevator and pushed the button for Shinji's floor.

Shinji did not move, 'How did he know?'

When the elevator opened, the figure surprisingly led the way. He walked up to the door and knocked. Misato answered, "Did you forget your key-". She looked up.

"Alex?"

"Alexander please. Alex makes me sound so childish Misato."
