Shido was too depressed to leave his house. He had let a woman die because of a stupid date. A date that didn't even get to be finished. He had finally been about to admit it had actually been one. But only after Cain had left him sitting confused on the lawn.
Cain. That man was so strange. Shido didn't know whether to love him or avoid him. He figured it was more of the former. Yet, he didn't know why he did love the blond. In reality, they'd only just met. In the scope of things, Shido knew next to nothing about the man. All he knew was that Cain was visiting England from another country.
Except, after the date, Shido almost wanted to say that Cain was from a whole other world. A world of dark, sensual, beautiful things. Things that the silver haired youth could only dream of seeing. A world he would love to be a part of, if only because Cain was there.
He was beginning to love the night, despite the fog and the chill of fall. It seemed that was the only time Cain ever came out. Shido had never seen him after dawn, and he felt it would be too strange, too forward to ask to see him in the daylight. Yet, he would still love to see the elegant, refined man more. If only to get information. The detective in Shido knew the blond man knew something about what was going on around the East End. He wanted to know what Cain seemed to know. He just didn't know how to go about asking. It seemed that whenever Cain did show up, all rational thought escaped Shido.
The youth frowned when there was a polite knock at the door. He yelled from inside the house. Demanding that the knocker go away. It continued. Thoughts still on Cain, he assumed that the object of his musings was standing at the door. He stood abruptly and dashed to the door. Shido threw it open with Cain's name upon his lips. “Ca….”
The tall blond was not at the door. It was Constable Abberline, still in uniform. The man smiled at him briefly. Shido noticed that the man seemed a little more than eager to see him. He wondered if it was about the body from before. “Come in.”
He led the older man to the parlor, trying not to fidget. “Did you need something, Constable?”
“Since when was it Constable with me, Shido? I thought we were much closer than that. I told you I'd be by to see how you were doing. Have you recovered from your terrible fright from earlier?” He asked.
“Yes. I believe I have. I thank you for checking up on me though, Fredrick.” Shido paused quietly for a second, wondering if that was all. He just didn't have the heart to demand if that was the only reason why the man was there. But the officer saved him the question.
“I have something for you. I didn't know whether you should see it. But I promised you I'd give you anything I had on this case. Especially now that this means progress. But I want you to promise me something first. I want you to promise me you won't beat yourself up or blame yourself, like I know you tend to do.”
Shido reached out as if demanding whatever it was that Abberline had for him. The constable put his hand over Shido's and shook his finger at him. “Not until you promise me. Do I have your word?” Shido shook his head, and was rewarded with a smile and a folded piece of postmarked paper.
The young detective sat down and opened the letter. Quickly, he scanned it. The handwriting and spelling were atrocious. It almost seemed to Shido that someone had written it in such a way that they only appeared to be totally uneducated. The scrawl was in brilliant red ink.
“Dear boss. I keep hearing the police caught me but they won't fix me just yet. I have laughed when they look so cleaver and talk about being on the right track. That joke about Leather Apron gives me real fits. I am down on whores and I shant quit ripping them till I do get buckled.” Once Shido started to read, he found he couldn't stop. He didn't even notice the man taking a seat next to him on the couch. Or the arm being subtly placed behind his head.
“Grand work the last job was. I gave the lady no time to squeal. How can they catch me now? I…love my work and...” Shido felt ill. He suddenly found great comfort in the warmth of the body slowly drawing him in. “And I want to start again.”
“You will soon hear of me with my funny little games. I saved some proper red stuff in a genger beer bottle over the last job to write with but it went think like glue and I can't use it. Red ink is fit enough I hope. Ha. Ha. The next job I do, I shall clip. The lady's ears off and send it to the Police officers just for jolly. Wouldn't you. Keep this letter back till I do a bit more work then give it out straight.”
“My knife's so nice and sharp. I want to get to work right away if I get a chance. Good luck. Yours truly, Jack the Ripper. Don't mind me giving the trade name.” Shido resisted the urge to toss the message into the fire. He could feel himself starting to shake. It was mostly out of anger from what he just read. “That… that... bastard. He's playing with us. He thinks this is a game! These are people lives.”
The constable sighed and calmly drew Shido into his arms the rest of the way, as if to shield him from the letter. “You promised me you wouldn't do this, Shido.” He reprimanded. “I know I shouldn't have brought this to you. I almost don't have the heart to tell you to read the rest of it.” He took the letter away from Shido's hands, still holding the youth. Quietly, in a soft, deep voice he continued for the boy. “Wasn't enough to post this before I got the red ink off my hands curse it. No luck yet. They say I'm a doctor now. Ha ha.”
Shido felt his anger quiet. Quelled into silent tremors. Because that's all he could do right now. Just shake and cling to the man. Cling to the only stable force in the room. Not at all comforted by Fredrick's murmured words. Everyting wasn't going to be okay. It didn't matter that the constable was there for him. He found himself wishing that it would be Cain there holding him instead.
Suddenly, Cain's warnings came back to him. Always trying to keep him from this case, telling him it was dangerous. The silver haired detective came to a sudden, harsh conclusion. Cain did know something. Something important. And Shido was going to find out what that something was. All he had to do was find Cain.
But he couldn't search for Cain until Fredrick was gone. The man still had hold of him. Lightly stroking his back, trying to quiet his trembling. He stopped finally, and tried to pull back. “I'm okay now. You can let go of me.” The constable only pulled his closer, and tightened his grip. “I said, you can let go of me, Fredrick.”
“You weren't complaining earlier. Can't we just stay like this for a bit? It's rather pleasant, don't you think? The thrill of this case awaiting us later. No Lusk to interrupt. No foreign riffraff trying to take you away from me. Just us.” The older man nuzzled Shido's cheek.
Shido's eyes went wide, and he started to try and squirm out of the man's arms. “What are you talking about? We can't just sit here. We can't! I mean we've got that horrible letter to worry about now!”
“Surely we can, Shido. I know it's terrible. But this it the thing that finally brought us together. We can be together always, Shido. Just like this. Think on it. No more having to go out at nights. No more worrying about anything. I'll take good care of you. ” The man was still nuzzling at him. His mouth tattooing the spot just by Shido's ear. “It'll be just us. Like it's supposed to be.” Hands moved to run across his arms to his wrists, as if to keep him motionless. “Or have you already given yourself to that riffraff?”
“C..Cain? What do you know about Cain? He's... We're…” Shido squeaked and his back was suddenly on the couch and Fredrick was sitting on him, holding his wrists above his head. One hand going to untie the little ribbon tie Shido had around his neck.
“That's what I thought. He's nothing. Let's not even think of him. It'll ruin this. I've waited for this for so long.” Fredrick leaned down and captured Shido's lips. The boy squirmed under him, trying to get away. It wasn't working. It was just making it so that the older man kissed him harder. A knee coming between his legs to part them.
He tried to protest, mouth parting to speak. His voice was muffled by the man's tongue thrusting into his mouth. Large, calloused hands slid under his shirt to ghost over his chest and stomach.
Shido felt his eyes slip close, and felt wetness on his cheeks. He couldn't stop this. He didn't know why, but he just couldn't. Mentally, he found himself crying loudly for help. For any kind of savaltion that might offer itself to him. He was mentally shouting for Cain.
He felt the weight shift, and heard the sound of a voice clearing. Tear filled eyes cracked open, to see Abberline straightened his clothing. There was another bobby in the room. The man was trying very hard not to look at their position on the couch. “Pardon me if I have interrupted anything, but it is of dire importance that we return. There is a man at the station from Scotland Yard wishing to speak to you about what's been happening. I'll be waiting outside with a carriage for you. Would you please consider hurrying up as much as possible?” The man left the room, leaving Shido alone with the older man again.
Abberline slid off of Shido, keeping a hold of him for just a bit longer. He reached out to brush his hair away from his face. “You're so beautiful, Shido.” He smiled softly and licked one of the tears off the boy's cheek. His mouth trailed down to Shido's kiss bruised lips to kiss at the corner. “We'll finish this later, darling.” Then the man was gone, leaving Shido curled on the couch.
Shido was shocked. He'd known that Fredrick had had this thing for him. But, he'd never expected this. It had almost been like someone else had possessed the man at the time. He was glad though, glad that it hadn't been Cain that had shown up to protect his virtue. He had no doubt that Cain would have hurt the constable very badly. He still remembered vividly what Cain had done to that man at the pub. And he didn't want Cain to see him in such a position. He wanted Cain to believe that he was still beautiful and pure. But that was a moot point now, because Cain was a suspect too. And Shido didn't know what to do anymore. All he knew is that he wanted to see Cain. He needed to see the blond. And he needed to see him now.
Mind made up, the young man straightened up his own clothing. He fastidiously removed all evidence that he'd just been on his back on the couch. He then got his jacket and set out into the coming night. He was determined. Determined to find out the truth behind the handsome man he only seemed to meet in the shadows of the night.
