Shido kept running. He had to keep going. The man might get away. Especially with the fog. Much to his distress, it was rolling in quickly. It had been such a clear night earlier. It had been absolutely beautiful. And so romantic while he was with Cain. But the second he'd left the charismatic man's arms; the weather had started to change. As if it had somehow been altered just for them.
Run as much as he could, Shido was getting nowhere close to catching his man. In fact, he'd lost his culprit at the dead end alley. He was starting to think more and more that the guy had just sprouted wings and flew away. But that was impossible, wasn't it?
As he ran, Shido found himself thinking of Cain. He was really starting to like the man. He'd been so kind to him from the start, even when the man had thought he was a kept boy. He felt terrible for leaving Cain like that. Without getting that kiss he seemed to have been offering. Had it not been for his sense of duty, Shido knew he'd still be in the park, drenched in moonlight, getting what he bet would be a very wonderful kiss. That thought alone brought another blush to his cheeks. And it made his body burn.
“I'm an idiot!” He groaned. “A total and complete fool.” Shido didn't even know if Cain would forgive him for this. He hoped so. But right now, he had other things to worry about. Shido was a very big believer in business over personal satisfaction.
The youth rounded the next corner. His foot caught on something. Shido fell forward into a puddle of blood. He scrambled backwards, back pressed against a wall. Eyes fixed upon the body lying in front of him. Another prostitute it seemed. Stomach spread wide-open, blood pooled around her and her severed neck. He felt a wave of nausea hit.
He heard the sound of police whistles, but he was frozen to the spot, just staring at the body. He barely noticed the man kneeling before him. A familiar man resplendent in his police uniform. “Shido… Shido, are you all right?”
Shido could only shake his head. He wasn't all right. He was angry. Angry and frustrated. This was all his fault. The world had gone to hell because he'd thought about himself. And now the police were here, so there was no way to catch up now. “Go home, Detective. We can take care of this.” The constable offered him a way up. Whispering quietly into his ear. “You don't look so good. Get some rest. Try not to stay out so late. It's dangerous. And no more dates with foreign riffraff. Now home with you, Shido.” The detective patted him lightly on the rear, almost looking satisfied with himself, before returning to the scene of the crime.
Shido wanted to protest but found he couldn't. He just nodded obediently. He glanced at the constable as the man walked back to take over the confusion. He himself was confused. How did Fredrick know about him and Cain? He didn't know. But now, his night was totally ruined. There was a dead body, and he had blood on him. And all he wanted to do was go home.
Home, where Cain stood on his stoop waiting for him. He smelled the youth before he actually saw him. The thick, subtle odor of fresh blood making his senses spike. Then the glint of silver hair, almost blending with the thick fog. Without thinking, the blond sprinted quickly towards the walking figure.
Shido had been jumping at shadows since he'd left Abberline and the body, everywhere he looked, there were places for a killer to hide. And all he could feel were hungry, hunting eyes, and the blood drying. He heard the sound of swift footsteps, and a large figure immerging from the fog. He flinched, crumpling to the ground. “No! Don't hurt me!”
Cain sighed at the display, kneeing next to the boy. He was relieved to see Shido. And even more relieved that the blood on him didn't belong to the boy. He was worried that his Shido had been injured. If that had been true, Cain would have taken a great delight in hunting down and killing the one who had. Only he was going to be the one to make Shido bleed.
“Shido…Darling Shido…” He breathed.
The youth looked up. A relieved look crossed his face. “Cain?” And then the boy flung himself at the taller man, just clinging to him. “Oh, thank God! You have no idea how glad I am to see you.” He was. Because just seeing Cain made all the shadows he had on the brain go away.
Cain felt his lower body stir when the boy launched himself into his arms. He reached around the boy to hold him back, fingers tangling into Shido's silky silver mane. “I'm glad to see you too. You left me in a lurch, Shido.” He all but purred. “But I can forgive you this once.”
He became annoyed when the boy tried to leave his arms again. He was not going to let Shido go yet. “Shido, darling, I don't want you working on this case of yours anymore. I don't want you outside at night unless you're with me or someone else you can trust. And I don't want you chasing after that man anymore. He's not what he seems.” Then he let go, reluctantly. He had to,though. It was almost dawn. And he didn't want Shido to see what happen to him if he got caught in broad sunlight.
“We'll just have to finish our date some other time, my Shido.” He leaned forward, and softly placed his lips against Shido's. Slowly, he used his lips to part Shido's and ever so slightly, dipped his tongue inside his mouth. Shido tasted like a fine wine. And he was just as addicting. He bet that his blood would taste even sweeter. Then he pulled away, leaving the boy blushing and confused, sitting on his front lawn as he walked away into the coming morning.
