Shido felt uncommonly happy. His entire day was spent in the world of bliss. His mother thought it was because he'd seen Fredrick last night. She thought it was about time her son had started to get his love life started. But that was not the reason for Shido's happiness. He did have a date. But it was not with Abberline. It was with Cain. Though it was actually not a date. Logic told the young man that he was just going to dinner with a friend. Shido's heart told logic to take a hike. It couldn't see Cain's invitation as anything else. It made him deliriously happy to know that someone as gorgeous and elegant and refined as Cain would want anything to do with him.
He just hoped that night would come soon. That way he could see Cain. And that way he could push the nagging guilt back. He knew he should be looking for that killer. He'd never placed personal feelings before a job. Now didn't seem like the proper time to start.
Shido's emotions finally reached agreement as the sun was setting. He could go out with Cain and do his job as well. It might be difficult, but he was sure that he'd find a way to get Cain to take him to the East End. He was even starting to formulate a plan when he heard a polite knock at the door. Shido didn't even bother to look dignified. He sprung off the chair and sprinted through the halls to fling the door open. Once there, he started to straighten his hair.
Cain stood outside. The setting sun threw red highlights into his golden hair. The dying light cast a red hue onto the white roses he held out for Shido. It seemed that he'd dressed for this as well. Looking elegant in rich silks and thick velvets. So unlike Shido. He hid his amusement when Shido accepted the bouquet and led him inside, so that he didn't have to stand on the stoop while the boy got water for his flowers.
He stood in the foyer, hiding a grin. Shido had just let him inside. And he was willing to bet the boy didn't even realize what he'd done by doing such a thing. Watching the retreating back. Wishing Shido had dressed up even the tiniest bit. Then again, this was Shido. And the boy had made rags look like high fashion.
He watched Shido run back to him after putting his flowers into a vase. “You have a lovely home, Detective.” He could hear the slightly shallow breathing. He found the out a breath look very arousing. He wasn't about to let the boy catch his breath again, either. The less time Shido had to think, the better. “Shall we be off?” He confidently offered his arm to the boy.
Shido stared at Cain totally dumbfounded. First the flowers, and now this. Cain was sure acting funny. Shido didn't know what it was, but he could tell that something was going on. Cain was making this seem like a date. But it wasn't. It was just a dinner with a friend, and Cain was just being polite, nothing more, and nothing less. But as sure as he felt, Shido was completely unsure of what to do. Mutely, he took the arm and let Cain back outside, to shut the door.
Cain led the boy away from his home and through the darkening streets. The silence was only broken by their footsteps. Shido had never felt more awkward in his life. Tentatively, he broke the silence. “So. How are you finding England?” He started lamely. And then he wanted to kick himself. Of all the dumb questions to ask, he had to choose that one. At least Cain was polite enough not to laugh in his face.
Cain was mystified. He found Shido's attempts to break the silence admirable. He didn't know why the detective looked so embarrassed. “I find it foggy.” He teased. “Really, it's very different. It's not at all like my country.” He soaked in the relieved smile Shido gave him. “My country is very beautiful. But it doesn't hold a candle to your England.” It was only because Shido lived there. Wherever the detective was had become beauty to Cain.
“I doubt that. You know, I'd love to see your country someday.” Shido murmured.
Cain had stopped walking. He'd found the restaurant. He'd chosen it for its location, next to the lovely Hyde Park. “You will Shido. I'll take you there one day.” Cain whispered to himself.
Shido was too busy taking in his surroundings to notice the promise. The place was dark and cozy. Totally romantic with it's soft candlelight. He could even hear the graceful playing of a violin inside. Cain had taken him to a top-notch place. He found himself trying to remain calm. It wasn't working. He had convinced himself that this wasn't a date. But it was looking more and more like one every minute. His only salvation was the waiter. The man informed them that they were going to have to wait over an hour to be seated. Shido could have kissed the guy. Actually, it'd be nicer to kiss Cain. “No. Quit it, Shido. This is not a date.” He mumbled.
“That's fine. We'll wait.” Cain sounded disappointed. He was. His perfect night with Shido was quickly going down hill. The blond wasn't going to let it die though. He was going to salvage this date if it was that last thing he did. “Come along, detective.” He beamed down at the silver haired youth. Then he grabbed the boy by the hand, dragging him away from the restaurant and towards the park.
Shido protested. He didn't mind that Cain was holding his hand. Actually, that sent a pleasant tingle down his spine. He hated being dragged around. “Slow down! I can't keep up.” The blond just pulled him deeper in the park. “Oh, for the love of… Cain!” He squeaked out the name when the man practically dropped him on a bench over looking a fountain.
The fountain was rare thing to see at night. Usually fog covered it and absolutely everything else. For once, the night was clear. Shido could see the full moon reflected in the water. Cain plopped next to him. Again, silence threatened to enfold them both. Cain saved Shido for making another attempt at conversation. “So detective, anyone special in your life? Some lucky girl at home?”
Shido's eyes widened innocently. He was shocked by the bluntness of the question. It took him a while to come up with a coherent answer. “Two of them actually. My mother and my little sister.”
Cain laughed, a deep, velvety laugh. “Don't be coy, Shido. You know what I meant. Is there anyone? I'm sure a handsome young man like you has people begging.” He placed a not so innocent hand upon Shido's knee.
The boy shook his head. Why did Cain want to know that? It wasn't like a man like Cain would be interested in a boy like him. “Tons of them. Have to beat them away with sticks sometimes. And the Constable chases away all the others.” He admitted.
“I see. So you do have someone then. This constable. Is he good to you?”
“No. You got it all wrong. Fredrick might like me, but I don't like him in the same way. I... I really don't know what I want, but I know I don't want him.”
Cain let his hand slowly wonder up Shido's leg to rest upon his thigh. “So, what you're saying is that your single. You're available.”
“You're not listening to me, are you?” He ran a hand thought his hair, frustrated. Then he looked over to Cain. “I'm holding out. I know that the right person for me is out there somewhere. I'll know them when I see them.” He felt the light stoking against his thigh. It was accompanied with a jolt of pleasure, and Shido blushed bright red.
“You just found him, Shido.” Cain breathed. He noticed how red Shido had become. It seemed it was time to bail the youth out before he got too flustered to function. “It's very beautiful here.” He whispered, his hand lingering a few seconds longer before he removed it.
“It's better in the day time.” Shido stammered. His emotions and his hormones were waging war with his senses.
“Night time is magical, Shido. Just look at it. It's alive. It sings to you.” The boy looked at him, confusion in his expressive blue-green eyes. Cain stood, continuing. “If you listen hard enough, maybe even you can hear it.”
Shido didn't know why, but he wanted to believe Cain. He wanted to hear the night singing to him more than anything else in the world. He shut his eyes to concentrate on hearing, his head tilted just slightly. But try as he might, Shido couldn't hear anything. But he was sure that Cain wouldn't lie to him like that. He was sure that if he tried just a bit harder, he could hear what the blond heard.
Cain smiled. It was a predatory smile. He had Shido off guard. At the moment, he could do anything he wanted, and the youth wouldn't notice. He seized the opportunity. Quietly, he leaned forward to brush his lips against Shido's. The kiss was soft, almost unnoticeable. Almost like the brush of moth wings. But the action sent a raging fire through Cain. Shido was just too sweet.
He backed away before Shido reopened his eyes. “I'm sorry, Cain. I tried. I really did. But I just can't hear it.” He apologized.
“Someday you will, my sweet detective. But for now, care to dance?” Before Shido had a chance to protest, Cain had pulled him off the bench. One hand going to the middle of his back to keep him close, the other going around his hand. Then the man started moving in step to the music it seemed only he could hear. He gave the boy no other choice but to follow, or get stepped on. Shido found that his free arm wound reflexively around Cain, pulling them even closer. Reluctantly, he found himself totally taken in. And greatly enjoying this strangely silent dance.
Cain was enjoying himself as well. His lovely detective was beautiful in the moonlight. His face slightly flushed, his eyes sparkling happily. He led their dance with grace and poise. Shido only clinging ever closer, until not even a ray of moonlight came between their bodies. The he suddenly stopped, just looking down at the boy, Hand going to tilt up the boy's chin. Golden eyes focused on slightly parted lips.
Shido hadn't wanted the dance to end. It had been nice. He'd wanted it to go on forever. But Cain had stop. He felt his chin get tilted, and Cain slowly descending. He felt the giddy thrill, readying himself for a kiss that was soon to come. He was anticipating it, and the joy it would bring. Which was why seeing the man out of the corner of his eyes was so unsettling. He was being watched. And it almost looked like it was the man from the bar. The one he was suppose to be hunting. He cursed silently and jerked away from Cain abruptly.
Cain wondered what he'd just done wrong. He'd been about to kiss the boy when he was suddenly out of his arms. And looking spooked. He wondered if maybe he'd moved a bit too fast for the silver haired youth. “Shido?” He asked. “Is something wrong?”
“Yes… I mean no... Oh I don't know! It's that guy! I have to go after him. I'm sorry.” Then Shido was running away from Cain, running out of the park and after the suddenly running form of a man.
Cain growled. Shido wasn't supposed to be thinking about work. That man had become between them again. It was rather annoying; especially he'd gotten in the way of something Cain had wanted. And now his prefect night was ruined. The blond clenched a fist and growled again, before he gave chase as well.
He was surprised at how fast Shido could run. Even without super-human abilities, the youth was still far ahead of him. He found himself admiring the way Shido ran. Those long elegant strides. The smooth way his muscles worked, making his dash look effortless. His chosen would make a perfect hunter.
Shido wasn't about to let this man get away. Not now. This saved his investigation. And if he caught the man, it might save countless lives. But the man was fast. Inhumanly so. He disappeared around the corner. Shido careened around it a second later. It was a dead end. Just a brick wall separating the two alleyways. Shido cursed. Either the man had sprouted wings, or he had climbed. The former wasn't possible.
Cain arrived a minute after Shido. He caught the last half of a wall climb. To catch Shido's legs disappeared over the wall. He heard the boy land heavily on the other side. Then a curse and the sound of him running again. Cain knew there was no way to catch up to him now.
He'd let Shido go for now. The man that Shido had been following hadn't scaled that wall. Cain could smell that. Come to think of it, the scent was almost familiar. Cain swore he'd smelled something like that earlier, only not so animalistic in nature. Strange. Still, he knew that Shido would have to give up soon. And Cain would be waiting for him. The young detective was very mistaken if he thought he could slip thought his fingers that easily.
