Shido slumped at the bar. He had two more days. Two short days to find this guy before everything was all over, and he was dragged off the case and onto something else. Probably something much safer. He knew the constable wouldn't risk him outside with a psycho on the loose. No, Shido had a feeling that Abberline would want to keep him close. Especially with how he'd acted two nights earlier.
He wanted to prove that he was more than just a pretty face. He wanted to prove that he was useful. And he wanted to beat his head against the wall. It was all just so frustrating. And it was getting worse the longer he was out. And he wondered what he'd been thinking. He should have given up when he'd been given the chance. Now he was going to look like a total fool when he didn't have anything to show. In his frustration, he took another swig of his drink.
“If you drink like that, you'll get sick.” Came a deep, foreign voice behind him. “And I can't guarantee I'll be there to hold your hair back for you.”
Shido turned to glair blearily at the owner of the voice. “Who shaid I wan you to hald m' hair back.” Then a slow smile spread across his face. The sloppy smile of a drunk man. The sober part of his brain yelled at him. But it was such a small part at the moment he ignored it. “H'lo Cain. How're you tish loverly night?” He greeted, waving energetically.
The taller man took the stool next to him, frowning somewhat. “I'm doing well. I'm surprised you can remember me, little detective.” Surprised because the detective seemed too drunk to remember anything at all, but pleased he had. Calmly, he reached forward and brushed a strand of silver hair away from Shido's face. The slight smile vanished when Shido turned back to his drink.
Cain could feel the frustration of the boy. Even with the distance his Shido had just placed between them. He sighed quietly. He didn't like that the youth was drinking himself into a stooper. He knew humans well enough. And it seemed that Shido was a very good example of what drink did to them. It seemed the boy's inhibitions about talking to him had gone away. And that he'd become impulsive as well. Ordering another drink, much stronger then what he'd been drinking before.
Cain hissed at the barkeep, putting his hand over the glass before the man could pour. “No. My little friend has had quiet enough. And I would appreciate if you left us be and tend to your other guests.”
Shido spun in his seat and nearly toppled over, catching at Cain's arm to stop his fall. Once holding onto it, he clutched it closer, almost cuddling it. “Ya dun own me Cain. Ya can't tell me what I can and can't do. I'll let ya know when I've had 'nough! Heya, bar keep, common, be a pal and bring shome more over.”
Cain lightly tugged Shido closer. Placing a hand over the boys. Prying his fingers away and open. With the youth's hand still in his grasp, Cain started to stroke the open palm. “You don't seem to understand, darling Shido. I do own you. And I can tell you whatever I want.”
Shido found himself giggling before eyes widened and Cain's words reached his inebriated brain. “You what?!” He practically wrenched his hand away. “I taught I told ya. I'm not a pros.. pross.. I don get paid fer sex! Now, if yul excuse me.. I haveta go somewhere.”
Shido slid off his stool and started away. Cain was up and before him in a split second. Hands on his hips, almost growling down at him. “You are in no condition to continue tonight.” It seemed the detective was hell bent on getting killed in the streets.
Shido tried to navigate around the man. Only it wasn't working. Cain refused to move out of the way. He only had one way out of this pub, through Cain. Not that he had anywhere to go. Cain was right about quite a few things. He could tell Shido what to do. And he was in absolutely in no condition to chase a killer, if that killer ever chose to show himself.
Cain noticed that Shido had stopped trying to get around him. Now the boy just stood looking up at him. Innocent blue-green eyes unfocused, his body swaying ever so slightly, trying to compensate for the drink in his system. A shaky hand going up to run though silvery bangs. “I shuposhe yer right. But I can't stop now. I goota just keep goin.”
Shido lurched forward, straight into Cain. The man's arms circled around the slender youth reflexively. And then immeaditly tighted his hold, changing it into a passionate hug. One hand running up and down Shido's back lightly. He most definitely enjoyed the feel of the boy in his arms. And it seemed that Shido didn't mind either. He just sagged into the embrace as if he'd always belonged there.
Those innocent eyes looked up, as if begging for something. “Cain…” he started.
The blond left his hand slide to tilt the boy's chin up slightly. “Yes, my Shido?”
“I shink.. I shink I'm gonna pass out now.” Then Shido crumbled in Cain's arms, his world going blessedly dark. His last conscious sensation was of Cain's supporting arms and how much he liked being in them.
Cain let the boy sag against him. He let out a soft sigh. In one swift motion, he scooped the silver haired beauty into his arms completely. Even without his unnatural strength, the boy would have been feather light. And he couldn't help but stare down at the porcelain frail boy. His was truly lovely, draped like that. And he knew the boy would look even lovelier draped across his bed, that silver hair flowing loosely around him like a halo. He shifted the boy, to clutch him closer. The movements made the boy's head loll back, baring his slender neck.
Cain became suddenly very aware of the people in the pub. They were all staring at him. Cain would have just let them, but it seemed that some of the eyes were resting heavily upon the boy. Looks that reminded him of his own. Predatory stares of unveiled need.
Growling, the blond swept the entire crowd at the pub with a single warning glance. A glance that said very clearly, “The boy's mine. It'd be hazardous to your health to try and take him from me.” And one by one, faced started turning away, unable to challenge the ownership in those unearthly golden eyes. “That's right. He's not yours to play with.” He scolded under his breath.
He would find time to look at his lovely detective later. He was going to get out of there before his ownership of the boy was put to a question. And, he thought ruefully, before he broke down and gave into the temptation Shido's bared neck was presenting him. Cain knew that if he did sate that particular craving, he didn't want an audience. He didn't think he wanted a meeting with the local torch wielding mob.
Besides, what he wanted to do to Shido was much better done in private. He had some very enjoyable things in mind. Things that would have to wait until he got Shido to his home. First they had a long ride in a Hanson Cab awaiting them. The horse driver chose not to say a word as he helped the man and his cargo into the black confines of the inside of the cab.
Cain sat in silence, with Shido draped in his arms. He shifted the boy so that the detective's head rested against his shoulder. Praying to all that was holy that the cobblestone streets wouldn't jar too much. Not with such a lovely boy already almost sitting on him. Unfortunately, the cab jarred. And the boy on his lap stirred into consciousness. Clutching his head, groaning slightly.
Shido slowly opened his eyes to the strange jarring feeling. His senses slowly gathering. First thing he noticed was that his head hurt terribly. The second was that he was dropped over someone. That someone was gorgeous. The word golden came to mind. The face was vaguely familiar. “C-cain?” He asked, weakly.
“So, you're awake, my Shido.” The man sounded displeased. The displeasure went away when the boy didn't struggle to get away. He just sat there, calmly. His head still against Cain's chest.
“Thanks for catching me.” He whispered, his own voice terribly loud in his ears. He felt totally embarrassed by the entire thing. He'd never meant to get this drunk. And he'd never meant to get Cain involved either. And he had a feeling that the alcohol was still running its course, making him hard to understand.
“You're very welcome, Shido.” He murmured back, lightly brushing the slope of the boy's cheek with his knuckle.
Shido blinked again, wondering where they were. All he could tell was they were inside of a cozy cab. Cain's arms around him. Going to lord only knew where. “Cain? Where… where are we? Where are we going?”
“I was just taking you away from that place. You wouldn't have been safe there all passed out like that.”
“Could you take me home?” He asked. He felt flushed. It was so embarrassing to ask Cain for this. He'd imposed way too much on the man as it was.
“There's no need to be embarrassed. I'll take you home, if that's what you wish.” Cain peeked out of the cab window to yell back at the driver. “New plan.” Before he told the man where he was now going to be taking them. Then he returned to the detective, wondering if he would have argued if he'd continued and taken the boy to his own temporary home. He knew that if Shido had gone with him, he'd never be able to let the boy go again. And that wouldn't do. He wanted Shido to come to him of his own free will.
“You're a great guy, Cain.” Shido mumbled, and returned to his previous position, leaning against Cain, head against the man's chest. Hand clutching the fabric of the blond's coat, as if afraid he'd disappear. Enjoying the soft touch of Cain stoking his hair quietly.
He was saddened when the carriage came to a stop just outside his house. It struck his as rather strange that the cabby hadn't needed directions. And that Cain had known where to go. But at the moment he was content to not dwell on such things. In fact, he was more than happy to not think about anything expect Cain's gentle hands helping from the cab.
He watched the blond hand over what looked to be a very large amount of money, for the inconvenience. And then wave away the cabby imperially, saying that he'd walk home. All the time, Shido just standing there, wondering why Cain had stayed.
Cain was just reluctant to let the youth go. He wanted to say with him for just a little longer. Longer, being forever. Instead, he found himself standing at the awkward goodbye, at the front gate to Shido's house. The boy confused and blushing just slightly. Trying to come up with something to say to ease their parting.
“I.. I don't know what to say. I don't know how I can repay you for helping me.” The boy then quickly engrossed himself with moss-covered rocks under their feet.
Cain laughed. A deep sensual laugh. He reached out to hook Shido around the waste and pulled him close. He leaned forward and bent just enough to whisper huskily into the boy's ear. “I'll find some way, but for right now, your thanks is more than enough, My Shido.” He let his face slowly pull away, letting his hair stroke against the boy as he pulled away. His words were rewarded with a blazing flush.
“Get some sleep, Shido.” He pulled away completely, just enjoying how attractive Shido looked with that blush. He could also see a spark in blue-green eyes that told him Shido was about to argue. Cain put a quick stop to that, placing a finger against the boy's lips to keep them closed. “I won't hear any arguing. You're going to bed.” Shido nodded obediently. “And no more drinking.”
Shido could only nod again. He could feel his heart pounding against his chest. It was because of Cain. He just knew it. There was just something about the blond that made it almost impossible to think. Even more impossible with his already addled mind. In the state he was in, all he could do was react.
Cain didn't seem to have any of those problems. The man seemed so sure of himself, so together. Even when he spoke, giving him orders he knew he wouldn't refuse, there was no stammering, no quivering. Just style and elegance. Cain had everything so together. It sort of reminded him of how the constable acted towards him.
Cain's deep voice brought Shido from his thoughts. “I know this might seem sudden, but would you mind terribly if we had dinner together tomorrow night. I, for one, would enjoy the company.”
“Dinner? With me?” Shido shifted uncomfortably. He had already imposed enough. He would have loved to go, but he had a job to do. Until his man was caught, Shido had no time for dating. The thought made his heart beat even faster. He had just been asked on a date.
Cain wasn't disturbed by the silence. In fact, he'd expected as much. It seemed the boy wasn't asked out too often. If at all. Especially if that other man had his sights on the boy. He didn't think too many people would muscle in on someone a bobby had a thing for. And then there was this job of his.
“I.. I don't know Cain.” It was not the answer Cain had been looking for. Yet it was good that the boy was so indecisive.
“Why not? Your job?” He reached forward to clasp Shido's shoulder almost roughly. “You work too much already. The world won't go to hell because you thought about just enjoying yourself for one night. You need a break before you really do make yourself sick.”
The boy winced slightly. He didn't know whether he liked this over protective attitude or not. It definitely reminded him of Fredrick. Cain was continuing though, and Shido found himself totally focused upon what the man was saying.
“You see, I'm a stranger to this land, and I'm rather lonely. I need…” he trailed off suddenly. He didn't want to say something that might chase Shido away from him completely. So lover was right out. “A friend. Someone that I can be with. Talk to. And seeing as how we already know each other, more or less, I thought that maybe you'd be the best choice. I mean, if that's all right with you.”
Cain hated sounded this pathetic. But he was banking on the bet that Shido had a gentle heart. And he thought by playing the lonely, homesick foreigner, he might just tug at Shido's heartstrings a bit more. No matter how demeaning it was. The fact that he lowered himself to that sort of thing was a testament to how much he wanted Shido.
The object of his affection nodded slowly. “I suppose I could give it a rest for one night.” Shido swore he heard Cain sigh in relief. “You know where to find me.” The boy opened the door. “I would invite you in, but I already promised some pushy blond guy that I'd go to bed.”
Cain tried to hide the amused look on his face. Shido was trying to tease him. And unwittingly, the boy was flirting with danger. The longer he stood there, the more likely he would just give into his nature. Then Shido paused and turned back to the blond, and softly kissed him on the cheek. “Good night Cain. I'll see you tomorrow.” Then the door closed and locked.
The blond stood in stunned silence, hand going to his cheek, staring at the closed door. A self-satisfied smile crossing his lips. “Good night, Shido. I love you.” He admitted to the coming dawn. Soon another day would be at hand. His only comfort was that after day, it would be night. A night Cain wanted to be perfect. He wasn't going to let this chance to romance his Shido to pass him by.
