Shido was running out of places to look. Then again, he knew practically nothing about the person he was after. All he could go on were his memories. He could only go where he'd seen Cain before. The best place to start was the pub, of course. That seemed to be where he always ran into the blond. Yet at each place, not one person could remember seeing Cain. Not even the tender he'd spoken to that first night could remember than man. At the restaurant as well. It was like the man had somehow wiped himself from their collective memories.

It was like that every place he went. Shido was getting frustrated by this strange disappearing act as well. Frustrating, and though he hated to admit it, a little freaked out. Two dozen people wouldn't just spontaneously forget someone like Cain. He was just too handsome, his personality too strong for a meeting to slip from memory. That kind of thing just couldn't happen. Or could it? Shido was really starting to wonder himself. Maybe with all this stress he was under, his mind had created Cain as a means of keeping himself sane. If so, then maybe it was time to take Fredrick up on his offer. He was sure that he'd come to enjoy this strange new aggressiveness the constable had sooner or later.

The detective laughed that idea off. His imagination wasn't creative enuogh to have invented a man like Cain. That much he was certain about. No. The tall blond foreigner existed. All Shido had to do was keep looking until he found him. And find him he did. Unfortunately, the silver haired youth found the man at precisely the wrong moment.

Shido should have stopped when he smelled the blood. By now he had way too much experience with that particular odor to mistake it for something else. Yet something inside him forced him to continue forwards. Forward, towards a tree near the park.

He rounded the trunk only to recoil. He didn't just see that. Yet he was. He was staring mutely, eyes wide in shock. Breath starting to come in quick, quivering gasps. Staring at a blond man hovering over the corps of a woman. A blond man attached to her throat, blood dripping down his chin.

His mind reeled in shock. Shido's emotions were in an uproar. Fear being the top to the emotional list. Followed right by disbelief. He really didn't want to believe what he was seeing. This man wasn't Cain. It wasn't. It just couldn't be the same man who'd kissed him in his own front yard. Not the man who'd danced with him under the moonlight. It was something that just looked like Cain. Shido took a step backwards. As he did so, a twig snapped.

Cain heard the snap. His head shot up from the woman he was clutching. His fangs were still out and visible, glistening red, blood smeared haphazardly around his mouth. His eyes were no longer almost golden, they were. Bright burnished gold. The eyes of a hunter. He blinked, and he eyes returned back to their normal honey color.

No. Shido couldn't have. Cain growled at himself. There was no use denying the facts. His beautiful detective had caught him in the act. Shido must know now. That was plain by the look on the boy's face. He could smell the youth's terror.

“Shido…” He said softly, standing. Slowly wiping his mouth with the back of his hand. The boy started to back up from him, quicker now. He was starting to make strange squeaking sounds as well. He seemed to be trying to fight the panic that told him to just run away now.

“This wasn't something I wanted you to see.” He reached forward, blood staining his hand. But the boy kept backing away in sheer terror. The youth needn't say anything. The accusation and hurt on Shido's face was more than enough.

Something inside Shido snapped. “Don't! Don't you come near me!” He cried out, voice cutting through Cain's. “Leave me alone!”

“Please… Shido. Don't do this. My darling Shido…” Cain wasn't below begging at this point. Asking for understanding while trying to get closer to the young man he had fallen for.

Shido turned to bolt, his foot slipping on wet rock. He went down hard. Cain attempted to catch him, only to wince when the young detective's head bounced against the cobblestone pavement. The blond was there immediately, checking his head. It seemed fine. Just a hard enough hit to render the boy unconscious. Meaning Shido would be just fine. But Cain had to wonder how fine Shido would be. Finding out someone was a vampire did terrible things to people's psyches. He just hoped Shido wouldn't be scarred for life.

He would worry about psychological trauma later. Right now Cain knew Shido needed to be somewhere safe and quiet. Carefully, he threw the boy over one shoulder. It wouldn't do for him to carry Shido like he wanted too. Not with what he had planned. It seemed that from this great vampiric blunder, Cain could still find some usefulness. He was going to take Shido home.
