Nightwalker Fan Fiction ❯ The Bells ❯ For Whom The Bell Tolls Part 2 ( Chapter 9 )
Disclaimer: No, I don't own Cain and Shido or any of the other characters from Nightwalker, no matter how much the voice in my head sounds like Guni…
Further Disclaimer: I myself (though half German by lineage) do not understand nor speak a lick of German. All of the translations within this fic were provided by an online dictionary. If they are wrong or I (more than likely) have screwed them up, I am VERY SORRY! Please be gentle, but feel free to correct me if you know otherwise. Please do not take my translations as fact!!!
Warning: As in just about all the fan fiction I write, this fic contains YAOI, or Male/Male relationships that are, as always, incredibly graphic. To me, it's art, and therefore restricting it would be not only stupid, but futile as my muse would beat me into submission and scream for me to write it anyway…
Chapter 9: For Whom the Bell Tolls-Part 2
Ken'ichi howled as he lifted an arm to protect his face, and fell back. Regardless of his guard, the Nightbreed's talons still scored deep into his flesh. He shakily rose to his feet as he faced the breed, clutching his useless arm to his body, then watched in horror as a single breed became many as its companions rose from the grounds' shadows.
"What the hell?" Ken'ichi shouted. "Get back!" There was no response. But, he was a vampire now, shouldn't the breeds have obeyed him as well? Ken'ichi jumped back and narrowly avoided another blow, this time to his face. Again and again he dodged and ducked under blows from the breed, hoping someone would hear his cries.
The breeds advanced, and Ken took another step backwards…only to trip over an upturned root and fall backwards. He watched as the breed closed in on him and screamed one last time…
The blow never came, but Ken'ichi felt something wet and warm fall onto his cheeks, and an indescribable pressure on his chest, clutching onto him, holding him tight. He opened his eyes slowly, and was greeted by a blood soaked cable knit sweater. A closer look and a tilt in the angle of his head revealed the sweater's wearer.
"Tatsuhiko!" Ken'ichi cried as he shook the elder vampire, his hands soaked in blood from a shredded back, but his dark brother seemed worlds away…

The pain…the pain was too familiar…too like it…too much like then. Shido hadn't thought before jumping between Ken'ichi and the breed. He'd acted on put instinct, but that move had cost him dearly. He could feel the blood running down his back and legs, could feel the limited range of his movements as a torn spinal cord struggle to mend itself, could feel the familiarity of his wounds.
A dark night, a cold wind, and a little girl's scream. Half formed images assaulted Shido's mind, rendering his muscles as useless as the stone ones of the gargoyles that spun in and out of his memories.
Cold, so cold. A wooden box, and sobs. A funeral dirge and bells off in the distance. But I'm alive! Vocal chords that could not form words. Oh dear God, oh dear God, no! I'm alive, please! Silence… the sound of movements that should have been silent to him. Of earthworms burrowing between earth and flesh, of animals scurrying over the cemetery grounds. Screams, his own desperate screams…then… footsteps… digging… digging… someone opening the lid of his prison, a coffin. Tearing it from his hinges… and a single word repeated over and over again…1engel…engel…engel…

Ken'ichi shook his dark brother, trying in vain to wake the tyrian-haired vampire from whatever stupor he had slipped into. He'd had all but given up hope as he lifted the two of them to their feet, but a rich, thickly accented voice lilted over the cacophony of breed snarls.
"Breeds should know their place. Even if they are under the orders of a vampire, they have no right to attack another vampire. We are above such petty, pathetic creatures."
Several breed near the back of the group burst in showers of blood as a red blade sliced through them. Immediately the other breed dispersed, but quite a few more still fell to the stranger's blade before they were gone.
Ken'ichi looked up to the new vampire. Unlike their sire, this dark haired vampire's accent was distinctly German in nature, and long, curly black hair had been pulled into a ponytail at the base of his skull. A mustache and goatee adorned an angular face, and steely gray eyes peered at the two young vampires before him. The stranger took one look at Shido and his eyes went wide.
"2Mien Gott!" he swore. He rushed over to the two and slowly lowered Ken'ichi to sit, gently taking Shido from his grasp.
"Who are you?" Ken'ichi asked between pants. Now that his adrenaline was gone, his body was making it all too clear that he'd been hurt worse than he'd thought.
"A friend 3mien kleines, a friend," he spoke as he gently patted Shido's cheek. "Engel? Engel?" he crooned. "Engel! 4Herr Gott nochmal, Engel, munter werden!"
Shido stirred and winced at the word 'engel,' but soon opened bleary eyes. "5Was zum Teufel?" Shido mumbled. He looked up to the dark-haired vampire. "Everard?"
"6Ja, Engel!" the stranger said, tears almost springing to his eyes. "7Ich bin's!"
"I--I'm sorry," Shido coughed, "I don't speak German."
"But Shido," Ken'ichi tilted his head in confusion, "not even a minute ago, you were."
Shido looked puzzled.
"Never mind, 8kleines, never mind," the dark haired stranger, Everard, said. "It was a foolish hope from a foolish man…"
