Disclaimer: No, I don't own Cain and Shido or any of the other characters from Nightwalker, no matter how much the voice in my head sounds like Guni…

Further Disclaimer: I myself (though half German by lineage) do not understand nor speak a lick of German. All of the translations within this fic were provided by an online dictionary. If they are wrong or I (more than likely) have screwed them up, I am VERY SORRY! Please be gentle, but feel free to correct me if you know otherwise. Please do not take my translations as fact!!!

Warning: As in just about all the fan fiction I write, this fic contains YAOI, or Male/Male relationships that are, as always, incredibly graphic. To me, it's art, and therefore restricting it would be not only stupid, but futile as my muse would beat me into submission and scream for me to write it anyway…

Chapter 10: Bell Chimes

Everard watched as Cain stormed into his chambers, almost splintering the heavy wood of the doors in anger and panic.

"Where are they, Everard," Cain growled.

In the bright lighting of the castle, Everard's dark features could more easily be discerned, showing what was presumed to be black hair was actually a very deep purple, and gray eyes were now shining a crystalline jade.

"Calm down, 1mien kleines, calm down!" Everard replied crossing his arms.

"They are my children!" Cain bellowed. "Whatever has befallen them at the hands of my enemies will be returned tenfold!" He stepped up to the dark haired vampire, who stood a good three inches shorter, but snarled none the less, bearing fangs.

"2Gott bewahre," Everard snipped. "They are fine Cain, no thanks to you!" The taller vampire glared down at Cain. "To think that you let both of your children out of your sight when you know that there are defectors among us!"

"Don't tell me how to protect someone, Everard! As I seem to recall, it was your job to protect someone long ago, and they are no longer among the living or undead!" Cain barked.

"3Die shiesse! You little--!"

Ken'ichi sat next to his injured brother, leaning over the small bed and staring at the purple coifed vampire.

Shido was staring off into space, his head turned away from Ken'ichi when the two of them heard the usually calm melody of their dark father's voice rise to a frantic and angry trill.

Shaken, Shido tried to move, but only groaned in pain when his still healing body protested a little too loudly.

"Don't worry, Tatsuhiko, I'll go," Ken replied, putting a hand on his dark brother's chest lightly as he rose. Which Shido promptly took purchase of.

"Ken'ichi, please! Don't prompt his anger," Shido warned.

Ken simply smiled. "Oh, Tatsuhiko, do not worry about me. You just need to focus on speeding your healing. I don't ever want to see you in pain again, brother."

"Don't you dare bring him into this, Cain!" Everard shouted at the blond coifed vampire, but then stopped, his own deep purple locks, now hanging loose, trailing behind him as he spun towards the now open door.

Ken looked over the two men in front of him with a mixture of anger and disgust in his gold gaze as he shut the doors to the room Shido was staying in. "I can't believe it!" he snarled. "Cain! You--you're bickering with the very vampire that saved our lives! And you!" he looked to Everard. "I thought you cared for Tatsuhiko's well-being at least a little, or else why would you have come to our rescue?" He was furious now, his entire body trembling in rage as he looked to his "elders."

"Ken'ichi, Little One," Cain soothed as he stepped towards the younger vampire, moving to place his hands on his shoulders.

"No!" Ken'ichi slid back from Cain's grasp. "Don't you dare! Don't you dare touch me until you go in there and apologize to Tatsuhiko for your rudeness and for worrying him half to death that you two," he punctuated his wards by glaring at both Cain and Everard, "were going to bite each other's heads off…literally!"

Cain looked to Ken'ichi briefly, and Everard sucked in a breath. It was one thing for Everard to talk to Cain like that, he had known the elder vampire for most of his adult life, but it was something altogether different when his child decided to.

Ken'ichi froze when he realized what he had just done. He turned his face and prepared for what was to come…

"Much as it displeases me to say it, especially with this blatant act of defiance, you are right, Ken'ichi," Cain glared back at Everard. "There are more important things in this world than petty arguments…" And with that, Cain brushed past Ken'ichi and entered the next room, shutting the door behind him.

Ken fell to his knees after he heard the doors shut behind him. There had been no way that he was going to show that weakness to Cain, but now, his knees could no longer support himself. He looked up when a shadow fell over him.

"Well done, 4kleines," Everard whispered. "It's about time someone set his head straight, but I am a little more than surprised that it was you." He looked to the closed doors. "Either you mean as much to him as Shido does…or you are very valuable…either is a blessing not to be taken lightly.

"Valuable?" Ken'ichi shook as he pondered the words.

Shido closed his eyes as Cain entered. He could practically feel the elder vampire's anger as he flowed into the tiny room and neared the bed he lay in. He felt like crying, a massive mound of writhing emotions and confusion. One half of him expected Cain to wrap him in his arms and never let go, but the other feared that the flaxen-haired vampire would beat him to unconsciousness…and the sad thing was, with all the pain he was in, Shido couldn't tell which he wanted more.

"Shido?" Cain whispered as he sat on the edge of the bed. His love was staring off into space as his pale body trembled. At any other point in time, Cain would have relished that trembling body, but this time, it was not in the throes of passion, but the grip of pain. Even with a vampire's abilities to heal, Shido had sustained a nasty, painful, and potentially deadly wound. Even a vampire couldn't survive long if he had no blood in his system at all, and a direct hit to the spine was one of the quickest ways to bleed one out…"Shido?" Cain asked again, this time with the barest hint of a quiver in his voice.

"I know you're angry Cain," Shido whispered.

Cain sighed, trying to rein in his anger. There was no need to discipline Shido, he'd done more than enough damage to himself, and the elder vampire didn't need to anymore. "Yes, I am very angry. That was foolish of you not to think before you acted, and even more foolish when you think of all the lives hat could have been impacted had it been a mistake."

Shido's face turned sour. "Yes, of course Cain. You're the one that matters here."

"Now, I never said that!" Cain snapped.

"You might as well have!" Shido snapped back as he tried to sit up. He winced in pain and fell back and into Cain's waiting arms.

"Stupid!" Cain hissed as he cradled his mate. "Stupid, stupid, stupid, Shido! Did you really think I was only talking about me? What about Ken'ichi? What would happen to him if you left us?"

"Ken'ichi? What would happen to Ken'ichi? What about 'what would happen to Shido?' Cain. Have you ever given me a thought since I've come back? Dammit, Cain, I feel lost, like I'm drowning!"

"You're just confused, my love," Cain hushed as he smoothed back Shido's hair. "Just con--"

"NO!" Shido cried. "Yes! Yes, I am confused, but YOU don't understand either! Cain, I' m lost! I have lost! Everything I held dear, everything I believed in…gone…just gone!" Shido sobbed.

"But you have me, Shido. You have us, Ken'ichi and I!" Cain almost pleaded. Almost.

"But," Shido clutched onto Cain's shirt, "for how long?" Shido sobbed.

"What?" Cain's eyes went wide. "Is that what you fear, Shido? That you will lose Ken'ichi and I?"

"No! It's not that, and you know it! How long before the humans come between us again? How long before we are reduced to fighting…and beating…" Shido voice faded into silence.

Cain smiled. "Never again, Shido. I don't need to, you don't need to. No race will ever tear us apart again, be they human or vampire."

"How do you know that?" Shido replied after a moment. "What makes you that sure?"

"Because," Cain grasped Shido's chin lightly and tilted it up to him, "you no longer believe you are human."

"But I--!"

Cain pressed a finger to his lips, silencing his child. " You said, 'How long before the humans…' They. Not you, not us. You've learned that there are humans out there that would see us dead, that would have us as nothing more than specimens on a laboratory table." Shido shivered at the memory. "But you are here now, I am here now, Ken'ichi is here now. Nothing will take that from us." Cain stood, lifting Shido and the bed sheet into his arms, careful to avoid the main injury on his spine. "Come now," he said, pressing a small kiss onto Shido's nose before carrying him out of the bedroom.

"Tatsuhiko!" Ken'ichi exclaimed as Cain carried Shido into the room. Cain gently handed the violet haired vampire to his brother and Ken'ichi looked confused.

"Take him back to our chambers, my Little One," Cain said. "Careful of his back. I shall be there shortly." He brushed the purple bangs out of Shido's eyes and sealed his lips with a kiss, before breaking it off, and mimicking the gesture with Ken'ichi.

Confused, and a little intimidated, Ken'ichi did as he was told, and took Shido to their chambers.

After his children had left the room, Cain turned to Everard, who was smiling broadly.

"What are you smiling at?" Cain snapped.

"Just something…long overdue, 1mien kleines," Everard smiled wider, jade eyes gleaming.

"Quit calling me that! There are too many vampires in this coven that understand German, and I do not need a blatant show of disrespect, Everard."

"Funny, when Benedict said it, is was never--" Everard was cut off when Cain latched onto the taller vampire's collar.

"That's because when Benedict said it, it wasn't!" Cain growled, and tossed the taller vampire backwards.

Everard slammed onto the ground, and growled up at Cain.

"Stay down, Everard. For Benedict's sake, I don't want to have to kill you," Cain warned.

"5Ja. For Benedict's sake, I wouldn't want to prove how backwards you have that statement," Everard hissed back, even as Cain turned to leave…
