Vampire detective Shido looked over his shoulder as he scanned the park area around him. His was breathing hard, bleeding from various wounds and feeling weak with fatigue. If he didn't find that Breed more innocent people were going to die. Damn it! The blasted thing was just playing with him; leering him out and away from his two partners. Both the vampire and the Breed inflicted wounds upon each other but Shido had gotten the worst. He only hoped that Riho and Yaiyo would show up to help because as things looked now, he wasn't going to be able to defeat it on his own. This Breed was clever.

A noise behind him made Shido whirl around only to receive another wound, this one in his shoulder. Shido cried out as the Breed withdrew its weapon from his shoulder. He clutched his wound, hissing at the thing. The Breed snickered before disappearing behind some bushes. Shido growled and ran after it. It led him through the park and up a tall office building. Landing on the rooftop, Shido looked around.

"You look like you've been through a most unpleasant experience, Shido," came an all too familiar voice from behind. Shido turned to see Cain standing on the other side of the rooftop with the damned smile of his. The older vampire lord opened his eyes. "Still fighting to save humanity, Shido?"

"Brilliant observation, Sherlock," Shido replied, feeling too tried to put up his former lover's strange sense of humor.

"Shido, you look tried from your battle. Come with me and rest for a while," Cain said, offering out his hand towards him.

Shido gave him a smirk and said, "I'm almost tempted, Cain but I need to stop this Breed. You may not care but this ones been murdering people for no probable cause. It simply enjoys to kill, but I doubt that you care."

A low combination of a hissing and growling made Shido turn around. There was the Breed, hunching down for another strike determined to finish off the lavender haired vampire.

"I normally don't offer my services but why not allow me to kill it. You're in no position to do the job," Cain said, forming his whip.

Shido chuckled and looked over his shoulder at him, "Why Cain, you almost sounded concern for me back there. Sorry but this is personal between us. One of the humans this thing murdered was a friend of mine."

Turning back to the Breed, Shido bit his finger and form his favorite weapon. With a battle cry from each side, Shido and the Breed charged at each other. The Breed raised its talons as Shido raised his sword. There was a sickening sound before Shido and the Breed wobbled away from each other. Shido stood up as best he could as he turned around. The Breed fell to its knees before melting into a puddle of gross mush then nothing but whispers of air. Shido dropped his sword, feeling completely drained.

"Finally… It's over…" he said.

"That was most dramatic. Now, shall we go, Shido?" Cain said, offering his hand again.

Shido didn't even hear him. The world was spinning and he felt so tired. A nice long day's sleep would be nice.

"Shido?" Cain asked, raising an eyebrow as he watched Shido wobble backwards and forward. Cain gave him a fond smile, "You've exhausted yourself. Come to me, Shido and I shall see to your needs."

Shido tossed his head and wobbled backwards.

"Shido?"

"Mm. Feel strange…" Shido mumbled as he backed up and bumped the back of his knees into the roof's edge. He suddenly went over the edge.

"SHIDO!" Cain ran over to grab his hand but he was too late. Shido feel downwards to the streets belong like a brick of cement. "SHIDO!!"

_________________________________________________

Shido felt himself lying on his back. He slowly opened his eyes. All around him was nothing but darkness. He saw a softly glowing light but it was coming from his body. Shido didn't seem to realize that he was naked. He looked around. Where was he? He suddenly heard a soft sound… like… singing? It was coming from above. Shido looked up to see a silhouette of a human figure with wings hovering above him and coming closer. He felt a warmth radiate from the winged figure and wondered if it was an angel. Had he died? He couldn't remember. Suddenly he felt the weight of the angel on him and the comforting warmth. He felt it enter his body, the warmth becoming his own and the light coming from his body was nearly blinding now. Then there was a flash of light! Then nothing…

"Shido…"

Someone was calling his name.

"Shido… Drink…"

It sounded familiar… like from his past…

Then he felt something warm being pressed at his mouth. He opened his mouth as a hot, bittersweet liquid flowed into his mouth. He swallowed it. More was given and he allowed it to flow down his throat, feeding his hunger.

Cain smiled as he watched Shido accept the blood he was giving him. It had been a long time since Shido had accepted blood from him. After Shido had finished swallowing the third glass full, he nestled back into a sleeping position and fell back asleep. Cain smiled fondly at him as he brushed his bangs out from his eyes.

Cain sat up from the bed Shido was sleeping in, had been for the past three days now. When Shido had fallen off from the roof, Cain jumped off the building after him. He'd caught him before Shido had collided onto the streets and stole him away from Japan back to his castle in Transylvania, Romania. There, he had placed Shido in his old bedroom and went to hunt down blood for his beloved. Shido would need blood and plenty of it if he were ever to recover. Unfortunately, there were more cows available so Shido would have to live off of cow's blood until Cain would be able to find some human blood to feed him.

On the forth evening, Shido finally wakened while Cain was out hunting. The lavender haired vampire sat up, feeling a slight headache from sleeping too long and looked around. This wasn't his office. It took him two full minute to realize that he was back in Cain's castle, which meant that he was back in Transylvania. He looked up when he heard a door close.

"Ah. I see that you are finally awake," Cain said, cradling a glass of blood in his hand and a bottle in his other. He crossed over to Shido and offered it to him. Instead of rejecting it like he'd done in the past, not to mention he needed to feed, Shido took it from him and drained the glass before handing it back. Cain smiled and poured him another. Shido drained that one as well. "I see that your appetite hasn't decreased."

"I suppose I should thank you. Though I don't know why you did," Shido said. Cain sat the edge of the bed next to him and took his hand in his.

"Whether you choose to believe it or not, I still care about you very much, Shido. I've always have," Cain said before kissing his hand. "Hmm. Your skin tastes as good as ever. Surprisingly since you've been feeding off that women from the N.O.S."

"Yaiyo's a good women and friend," Shido said, standing up for her. This was very strange, normally he would be trying with all his might to get the hell out of here but for some reason, he didn't felt the need and very calm. He cocked his head to the side, "Tell me something, Cain?"

"Yes?"

"I've been wondering for years about this. Is Cain your real name?" Shido asked. Cain looked at him with an odd expression before a smile found its place on his lips.

"No," he replied.

"What is it then?"

"I… cannot remember, Shido. It's been centuries since I used my birth given name so I've forgotten it," Cain replied.

Shido actually laughed as a thought entered his mind and looked away.

"What?" Cain was intrigued. He briefly wondered why Shido hadn't tried to run away from him yet. Perhaps he finally realized that it was time to put a stop to all these games and come to his senses that they belonged to each other.

Shido shook his head, "Just a thought."

"Tell me, Shido. I'm intrigued as to what's on your mind," Cain said.

"How appropriate," Shido said. "That you would name yourself after Cain, the very first vampire lord that walked on Earth, since you believe that vampires are the supreme rulers over the earth. I'm rather relieved that you didn't name yourself Vlad after 'the impaler' himself."

"Don't get human fiction mixed up with actual truth, Shido. He was an insane killer compared to us vampires and not worthy enough to call himself one or referred to as one," Cain snapped.

Shido held his hands up in defense, "Don't yell at me. Yell at Brain Stoker for using him in his novel."

"I met his father once," Cain said absentmindedly.

'You must be very old then,' Shido thought. "Brain Stoker's?"

"No, Vlad's," Cain replied. Shido blinked. Cain laughed, "Now do you believe me when I told you that I'm older then you by centuries?"

Cain looked over his shoulder as his inner clock warned him that dawn was coming.

"Dawn approaches. I suggest that we retire," Cain said. He leaned in and kissed Shido off guard. He pulled away and said," I do love you, Shido."

'You may say that but you never act like you do,' Shido thought as he watched Cain depart. Cain looked at him once more before disappearing. Shido looked over at the window that was covered. Every window in the entire castle was covered. Shido looked at his watch. Unlike Cain who slept during the day, Shido didn't mind staying up. He rose from the bed, finding that Cain had dressed him in a nightshirt. He easily found the bathroom as years of memories, of living here as Cain's lover once, came back to him. Finding that bathroom, Shido stripped to take a bath. Waiting for the tube to fill with water, Shido stretched his limbs and looked over at his reflection. And screamed.

He had wings! Black feathered wings! How did that happen!? Vampires never had wings! How could this have happened?! When did this happen?! Did this happen while he was recovering? It must have! This would explain the strange vision he has seen. Did that mean… Had a Breed entered his body while he… No. For one thing, Cain would've carried him off before a Breed could have entered his body. Another reason was why would a Breed want to possess another Night Walker of the night since most breeds wanted human bodies to walk through the light?

Then this mean that what he thought was an angel really was an angel. But didn't angels appear to take those who were dying off the heaven not unit with them as this one had done with him? And why did he have Black wings instead of white? Was the angel a fallen angel? Or was it because he was a vampire and the black wings had a symbolic background. Hmm. If an angel had united with him then why? Was he or she trying to save him from dying by becoming one with him? Was his time on Earth not over yet? This might also explain why he felt so calm around Cain. Perhaps it made sense not to get over excited with anger at the older vampire since it only made matters worst.

Shido looked at his… wings.

Well, he felt the same so perhaps having the angel unite with him wasn't a bad thing. Plus, as he looked at them, these wings were rather cool. It made him feel apart from other vampires and… special too! Accepting them, Shido wondered how Cain was going to react when he saw them. Shido looked back at his reflection and saw them disappearing. Shido turned around and looked at his back. That was interesting. He had a thought and wished them back. He watched them grow. He wished them away and they withdrew. So, he only needed to wish for them and they grew.

"Riho's probably going to want a pair," Shido smiled as he turned off the water and sat back in the tub. Shido wondered how he was going to get back home. He guessed that by now, Yaiyo, Guni and Riho were worried sick about him. He doubted that the N.O.S. would give Yaiyo leave to take a trip to Transylvania. He also doubted that Cain would let him go. No, he knew that Cain wouldn't let him go. He also knew that Cain didn't have a phone so he couldn't call his office and tell him where he was. He doubted that any of the close by villages had phones or electricity for that matter. Guess he was stuck for a while until he thought out a plan. He kind of felt like that girl from that story Beauty and the Beast. He was the beauty and Cain was the beast only Cain wouldn't turn into prince charming at the end of the story.

Finishing his bath, Shido drained the tube, dried off and reentered the bedroom. He found a wardrobe full of clothing.

"All in my size. How interesting. Looks like Cain was serious about taking me back," Shido said as he dressed.

Shido left his bedroom and explored the castle, seeing nothing had changed over the years but everything to him was renewed. In the dinning hall, Shido made an unpleasant discovery. Cows or rather parts of what used to be cows and bones all over the place. Shido was relieved to not find any human remains but still, this was like being in a slaughterhouse. In the middle was a member pack of wolves feeding on the bloody meat. They all looked up noticing him. Shido swallowed as the alpha male licked his muzzle clean and growled at him. Then, Shido felt a wave of calm wash over him and he knelt down, extending his hand out to the wolf. The wolf walked over, growling softly. Sniffing his hand, the alpha male whimpered and pushed into Shido's hand. Smiling, Shido scratched him behind the ears as the other wolves walked up to him and wanted attention as well.

"I wander if Cain knows that he has wolves living in his castle. But then again, he's probably the one who keeps you all here," Shido said as a pup scampered up to him. Shido smiled and picked him up in his arms. The pup's mother rested her head in his lap, looking up at him. Shido smiled at her, "He's beautiful and has your eyes."

She barked, sounding please. Shido placed the pup down and stood up. The smell was starting to get to him. Leaving the room, the alpha male and his pack followed him. Shido pulled on a long hooded cape after searching for one. Tying it on and pulling the hood one, Shido opened one of the front doors and walked out to the garden with his new friends following him. The day overcast with gray clouds and there was a gentle breeze. Shido walked to the garden, amazed the find it in bloom. Cain never seemed to be the type who liked or appreciate gardens but Shido recalled once of hearing that Cain loved to collect beautiful things, that including him. Shido was torn between flattery and anger, and let it slip away. He sat down on a stone bench under a weeping willow tree. He watched the wolf pups play as their parents stood by, keeping an eye on them. The alpha male and female sat on either side of Shido.

Evening came and Cain woke. He went into Shido's room and saw that he wasn't there, however Cain could smell that his scent was still fresh meaning that he was near by. Cain followed his nose and found Shido in the library. A fire was going in the massive fireplace and the wolf pack was snuggling up to him as the lavender haired vampire read a book in front of the fire, laying on his side, and propped up by s few cushions. Two things struck Cain as interesting; one, that Shido was still here and two, the wolves were acting as if tamed which Cain knew was untrue since these were the wildest wolves in the country side. Interesting.

The alpha male looked up when he detected Cain's scent and pushed his muzzle into Shido's side. Shido looked up from his book.

"Reading anything good?" Cain asked.

"Yes. Dracula," Shido replied with a cocky smile.

Cain arched an eyebrow before giving into a laugh.

"You are a jewel, Shido," Cain smiled.

"Nothing has changed much here since the last time I was here," Shido said, saving his place. "Except, I don't recall the dinning room looking like a slaughter house or smelling like one."

"You needed blood and there are more cows then humans close by," Cain replied.

"I don't recall you ever killing anything so messy like that before, "Shido said, meaning the cows. "It doesn't seem your style."

Cain frowned and asked, "Anything else you'd like to complain about?"

"Don't get so offensive, Cain. That's not your style either," Shido replied.

Cain looked as if he was going to slap him but he lowered his hand. He shook his head and pulled Shido over to him. He kissed him before leading him to the dinning hall. When he got there, he looked pissed beyond hell for some reason.

"What in the Hell? Everything's a mess!" Cain roared. "How did this happen-" He turned the pack of wolves and his face twisted into a snarl. "I give you all a safe place from the villagers and this is how you repay me?!"

Cain formed his whip as the pack backed off. Shido stood in front of them.

"Cain, leave them alone. They didn't mean any harm but doesn't it seem natural that if you leave all this meat in here without locking the door, an open invitation for them to help themselves?" Shido asked.

"You will be silent!" Cain snarled at him and snapped his whip. Shido raised his hand as the end of the whip wrapped around his hand. He tugged hard and pulled the whip out of Cain's hands. Squeezing the weapon, it disappeared and he hissed in a odd tone," You will not use your whip on these wolves or me ever again. Do you understand me, Cain?"

He stood up and bit his lip, forming his blade.

"However, if you want to fight to help calm you down then prepare your sword, Cain," Shido ordered.

Cain narrowed his eyes and bit his lip.

"Don't expect me to go easy on you just because I love you, Shido," Cain said, forming his sword.

Shido smiled, "I would never."

Taking a defense stand, Shido stood his ground as Cain took offense. They fought back and forth for hours until Shido knocked Cain's sword out from his hands and pointed the end of his blade at his heart.

"Shall I pierce your heart with the sword of love, Cain?" Shido asked, his cocky smile returning.

"You've already pierced it with cupid's arrow, Shido," Cain replied. Shido drew it down his chest.

"How very poetic," Shido said, letting his sword disappear. "Sometimes, you act like you don't have one."

Cain unbuttoned his shirt, took Shido's hands in his and had him place his hand on his chest.

"But I do," Cain said. Shido could feel the beat under his hand.

Shido took his hand away.

"I'll believe that when I see it for myself, Cain," Shido said, making his sword disappear. Cain almost looked saddened before he plastered on one of his smiles and took Shido's hands in his again.

"Come, tonight we shall dine out," Cain said. He led him out of the room and to the staircase. "Get dressed and I shall take you to one of my favorite spots."

Shido looked at him before heading upstairs to his room. He changed into a burgundy poet's blouse with flared ruffles that fell down the front, a black coat and matching dress pants. Appearing at the end of the stairs, he found Cain waiting for him who'd also changed.

"Shall we?" Cain asked, offering his hands.

'Like I have a choice at the moment,' Shido thought and accepted his arm.

Outside, they climbed into Cain's coach and the driver road them off. Shido looked outside the window watching the scenery change. There was a full moon out tonight. The coach stopped and the door opened. Stepping outside of the coach, Shido looked around and gasped in shock. He saw the tree next to the brook where he has first meet Cain. A blanket had been spread out under the old, snarled oak tree. Two candles had been lit and there was a picnic basket.

Cain dismissed the driver and the coach rode back to the castle. Cain turned to Shido who still looked a bit taken back.

"Do you remember that evening when we first met, Shido? I looked up and saw the most beautiful creature my eyes had ever laid on," Cain said. "I knew from that moment that we were destined to be together for eternity."

The place would have normally been romantic to remember old times as two lovers, however, Shido remembered that this was where he saw Cain feeding on a young woman and killed her by drinking all of her blood. His life had taken a change from that moment on. Shido wasn't sure if he wanted to remember that night if he could help it. Cain had Shido sit down as he removed a bottle from the basket and two wine glasses. Cain popped the cork and filled both glasses. He handed one to Shido.

"I had this wine especially made for us. To celebrate the day when you would return to me. And to our love," Cain said, clicking Shido's glass.

Curious, Shido took a sip. He could taste blood mixed with a fine and aged well wine. He had to admit that the wine was excellent.

"Does it please you, Shido?" Cain asked as he watched Shido take another sip.

"Actually, yes. The wine is excellent," Shido replied, taking another sip.

"I'm glad," Cain said. He took a long sip. He looked at him, "Tell me something, Shido. I have wondered over this for over two hundred years… Why did you leave?"

Shido thought for a moment.

"If I tell you, will you strike at me?" he asked.

"No," Cain replied. "I want honesty."

"It was many things but mostly your attitude. Your arrogance that vampires should rule over the world would be enough to drive anyone away since you seem to be obsessed with it. Hearing it over and over again grew on my nerves. And the death of my little sister also had a factor," Shido said. He placed his glass down and stood up, walking a few steps away from him. "I can still remember that day she threw herself out into the sun. I allowed her to kill herself but I couldn't have stopped her if I wanted too. She wouldn't have allowed me too. She hated me for what I had done. You can't understand what it's like to watch your little sister, someone you love so much, kill herself and unable to stop her in time. When you told me to follow my instincts, I did. That helped brought the death of my sister. And… what hurt even more was that… you didn't care. Someone that I loved died twice and you didn't care. I mourned her death alone and you gave no support. So I began to grow to hate you and see you in different eyes. Your arrogance was reawakened for me and I grew to hate you even more until I finally decided to break away from you. Does that answer your question, Cain?"

"Shido, I…" for once Cain was speechless.

"If you had mourned with me. If you had shown ever a little sorrow for me, we would've never spent those hundred of years apart," Shido said. 'But I'm glad you didn't. It made me human again and I'm grateful for that.'

Cain stood up and walked over to him, wrapping his arms around his waist. He whispered, "I know that no apology can ever make up for what happened but if it's any worth, I truly am sorry."

"I'm not sure that I can accept your apology," Shido replied.

"I understand. Perhaps in time you will and on that day our love for each other shall grow. Until then, I shall do all I can to help make it up to you," Cain said, kissing his hair. "Come, let us return back to the castle."

The coach appeared and Cain placed Shido inside.

"Take him back to the castle," Cain told the driver.

"Ay, milord," replied the driver and the coach pulled off.

Back at the castle, Shido was greeted by the wolf pack. Smiling, as soon as he knelt down he was ambushed by them.

"Hey there," Shido smiled, scratching them behind their ears. The pup whimpered and Shido scooped him up into his arms. The wolf pup gave a happy whimper and licked his cheek. He smiled at the pup's mother, "I think your son likes me."

She rested her head in his lap.

"Do you like me too, lady?" he asked. As if replying, she licked his cheek. "Hmm, I'll take that as a yes."

Placing the pup down, Shido walked up the steps. He halted when he heard a chorus of whimpers and looked to see the pack looking up at him.

"Al right, come on up," Shido smiled. The packed followed him up to his room and he opened the door for him. He chuckled, "It seems I have gained some room mates."

When Cain returned back to his castle, he entered Shido's bedroom and found him already fast asleep with the wolf packed curled up around him on his bed. The wolf cub was curled up under his chin.

"How sentimental," Cain remarked with a smile before closing the door.

A few days later, as the sun was rising, Shido was reaching overhead to snatch a book from a shelf as Cain walked into the library. The blonde vampire crossed over and wrapped his arms around Shido's waist.

"Dawn has come and we must rest," Cain whispered into his ear. "Will you join me in my coffin this time?"

Shido shivered when Cain placed a kiss on the back of his neck.

"No," Shido replied.

Cain released him and gave an annoyed huff.

"I'm starting to get annoyed with being denied of what I want, Shido," Cain said, crossing his arms.

Shido turned around and peered at him through his bangs, "Would you try to take me by force then? Would you rape me just to satisfied your bodily needs, Cain?"

"Would I rape you? Do you really think I would do something horrible as that?" Cain asked.

"Then wait until I'm ready to slept with you again," Shido replied. "Or if you try to take me by force, I promise that you will get nothing but my contentment."

"Very well. I love you too much to force you into anything that you don't want," Cain said. He leaned in and whispered into his ear, "But do not take to long, my love, for I miss the heat that we share."

Shido blushed as Cain drew away and disappeared into his room.

Flipping through the pages of the book, Shido placed it back on the shelf. He scanned the titles and one caught his eye.

'Is this a journal?' Shido thought and pulled it out. Opening the first page, Shido gasped when he realized that this was actually Cain's personal journal! Shido sat down in a chair and began to read the first section of the journal that was written by Cain's mother!

'This means that Cain was born a vampire,' Shido thought.

As he continued to read, Shido learned that Cain's mother and father were also pure bloods who had meet during the thirteenth century in Paris, France and married before they moved to Transylvania, Romania. As a wedding present, Cain's father bought this castle for his new bride. From reading her entries, Shido realized that Cain's parents were nothing like their son, or at least Cain's mother was. She didn't see vampires as supreme beings over the earth. He scanned and found when Cain was born but Cain's real name had been rubbed out.

Shido went on reading. When Cain turned sixteen, his mother gave him the journal, after that Cain wrote the rest of the journal. Shido scanned ahead and stopped. The next entry told Shido that Cain's parents had been slain but a group of villagers after discovering that they were vampires. Cain had been away attending school and discovered what had happened when he returned home. After that moment, Cain became the same vampire Shido had come to know.

'So, that's when it started… After the death of his parents, Cain developed a hatred to them,' Shido thought. He scanned the rest of the pages that went on about Cain growing up, hunting on humans, meeting Vald's father and fighting in many wars. Then, Shido came to the year of the seventeenth hundreds of Cain's journal. His eyes grew wide as he read the next entries.

...In all my centuries of existing, I never felt love until tonight. I saw the most beautiful creature God had ever created to walk Earth. Long, flowing lavender hair, fair, flawless skin and the most enchanting blue-green eye like the color of the sea. He is so beautiful. I must have him. I know that he is the one I have waited for all these years, the one that I would want to spend eternity together with, my soul mate and my life mate. I must learn more about him. His name, his voice...everything...

Another entry…

...I saw my beautiful love again tonight. Shido. His name is Shido. His voice is so thrilling. How I would love to see him smile at me the way he does toward other people. Do they realize how beautiful he is and how they are unworthy to be around him? He is wasted to be human, so I will make him one like me. I shall give him eternity...

...I had made a pleasant discovery tonight. My dear Shido is curious about the dark side of the light. Not many humans wish to accept its existence but Shido is different; He sees things as they are, he is not a fool. He will be leaving his family tonight to go study medical science to become a doctor. A perfect time to seduce him into coming with me...

Shido dropped the journal as a pain began to throb in the temples of his head. He closed his eyes, wishing the pain would go away. The room felt dizzy, opening his eyes, Shido saw that the room was spinning out of control before he fell and lost consciousness.

When he next opened his eyes, Shido could hear a heart beat. Was it his? He looked around and saw the same black, endless void as before when he and the angel had united as one. A beam out light caught his eye and Shido looked over to where it was coming from. Fascinated and curious, Shido stood up and began to walked over towards it, As he drew closer, he felt calm and there was something familiar about the light. Like finding lost and forgotten of the past now brought forth again. The heartbeat was now loud and strong as he stood so close that he could almost touch the light.

"Touch the light, Shido, for it is your memories of past that was stolen from you. Take them back and remember your true self. Cherish this gift that I give to you, my Shido..."

Listening to the calm, gentle voice, Shido placed his hand on the light and was consumed by it. Like a damn bursting his long forgotten memories came back; he knew his parents, his child hood, friends, family members, everything up until the night he ran across Cain for the first time and his curiousness about the Dark side of the Light that no one seemed to accept its existence. He remembered that his father had died when he was young because of a disease. That was what got him interested about medical science and as a new age was coming, it meant that new discoveries about medical knowledge were coming forth. He wanted to become a doctor to help those who needed medical treatment and to help support his mother and little sister. But then Cain appeared, stole his memories, made him into a vampire and a monster until a deadly disease spread over the city and killed his mother and sister was killed by some unknown vampire. Seeing her dying, little body, the part that was once human of Shido returned in his heart. What happened next haunted him for years…

Shido snapped his eyes open and sat up with a start. He gasped for breath as he tried to calm himself down. No, it'd been a dream… But now, he could remember. His memories had been restored.

After placing the journal back, Shido headed up to his room and stood before the full-length mirror in his room. He watched as his wing grew; lose feathers falling onto the floor of flying in the passing breeze. Shido stared at his reflection.

"It was because of you, wasn't it?" Shido asked the angel inside him now part of him. He placed a hand on the mirror and his reflection did the same. "You decided to help restore my memories, didn't you? I don't know why but I'm sure you had your reasons." Shido sighed and placed his forehead on the cold surface, "Are you trying to tell me something? Are you trying to tell me that I have to escape from here? I'm not sure how I'm going to do it but I'll find a way."

Shido felt something inside him pulling him towards a window.

"What? What is it? What are you trying to tell me?" Shido asked. The nagging became stronger. "Do you want me to go outside? Is that it? But… direct sunlight is deadly to us vampires. You understand that, don't you?"

The feeling grew more until Shido could no longer resist. He walked over to the board up balcony doors, broke the lock and removed the chains. Placing his hands on the doorknobs, Shido took a breath before turning them and slowly pushed them open. Beams of warm sunlight washed his face. Shading his eyes from the sun, Shido stepped out and stood. Nothing happened. The sunlight didn't harm him. Closing his eyes, Shido lifted his face towards the sun and smiled.

"I've forgotten how warm the sun is. How good it felt," Shido whispered as tears rolled his cheeks. He understood. Uniting with the angel had given him the opportunity to walk under the sun again. But his eyes were still sensitive to the sunlight. Handing back inside to grab a pair of sunglasses, Shido stood on the balcony. Opening his wings, Shido jumped and took his first flight.

Flying under the sun was incredible. He could see everything for miles on end. He felt free and pure again. As if the wind had purified his body. Shido spend most of the day flying around the land around Cain's castle. He didn't want to go out to far in case something happened.

Before the sun began to sink over the horizon, Shido returned to his balcony and watched the sun set. He willed his wings away before entering his room, feeling tired.

"Just I over did it today with all that flying," Shido said to himself as he went to take a quick shower. By the time he was dressed, the sun was well set and Shido guessed that Cain was waiting for him.

Cain.

Now knowing the truth and with his memories restored, Shido knew that it was time for him to leave, and return back to Japan.

'I will stay two more days to regain my strength for the journey but not a day longer,' Shido thought as he walked down the stairway. 'Cain had gotten into his head that I'm here to stay but he's wrong. How can I go back to someone like him? A thief who stole something he had no right to! I can never forgive for what he's done. I can never love him again. After all, I have somebody else whom I love and who's waiting for me, and I'll be damned if I disappoint her!'

Standing in the main hall, Shido could hear organ music coming from the music room. He followed and pushed open a door. He found Cain sitting at the large organ playing a nameless piece of music. Shido stood, watching him play, wondering how something so beautiful as the music could come from the hands of such a monster.

Shido walked over to a table where there was a collection of pictures on display. Most of them were hand painted portraits. One in the back caught his eye and Shido picked it up. Covered with layers of dust, Shido couldn't make out the face until he wiped it away. It was a picture of a lady in very old clothing with long, wavy yellow hair and Cain's eyes only hers were violet.

'This must be his mother,' Shido thought. 'She was so very beautiful when she was still alive and very kind from her journal entries that I read. How could someone of such good hearted nature have such a monster for a son?'

"Admiring the picture, Shido?" Cain asked from behind.

"She looks a little like you. Who is she?" Shido asked, pretending not to know otherwise, Cain would know that he had read his journal.

"My mother, Angelique was her name," Cain replied, wrapping his arms around Shido's waist. "If she were still alive today, she would've been your mother-in-law, Shido."

Shido nearly dropped the framed picture but lucky, Cain caught it and placed it back in its place.

"You need to be more careful, my love," Cain said.

"W-What do you mean by that? About her being my mother-in-law if she were still alive?" Shido asked.

Cain placed a hand on the table and as he looked at Shido.

"I guess you're not educated in Vampire customs and perhaps that is my fault for not teaching you. When a vampire is ready to take a mate for life, they wait until they find the one, the one that calls to them; the one that stands out more then others. To me, you were that person. And when I took for my lover, I also took you as my life mate. A vampire's weddings is nothing a like a human's. With the exchange of blood, a vampire and their mate are joined in wedlock," Cain explained. He gave him a smile, "Meaning we were married as soon as you became a vampire, Shido."

Shido looked as if he had been hit by a four by four. He stared in disbelief at what was telling him.

"I… I…" Shido couldn't believe it. He didn't want to believe it.

"Do you truly understand now why I was so upset when you left me?" Cain asked. "And why I was determined to get you back, darling?"

Shido sat down heavily as the information weighed down on him. No, it couldn't be. He couldn't be married to Cain. It had to be some trick into making Shido stay with him.

"I don't believe you, Cain," Shido said.

Cain then smiled and chuckled, "I thought you might say that. If you don't take my word for it then go into the library and look for a book. It has been translated from old vampire tongue into modern English but a very old copy. You'll know what it is when you see it."

Shido stood up and headed towards the library. There, he searched every row until he found the book he was looking for. Opening the pages, Shido scanned through it until he found a passage about vampire wedlock. To his horror, everything Cain had said to him was true. Damn him. It was all just too much for him to handle. Regaining his memories, exhausting himself from flying and now this, learning that he and Cain were married under Vampire law. It was just too much.

"It's got to be one of those days," Shido murmured to himself as he placed the book back on its shelf.

Stepping into the music room, he found Cain, sitting back in a chair looking calm and collected as usual; his shirt was unbuttoned with a glass cradled in his hand. If it had been anyone else but Cain, the scene would've been exotic and sexy as hell. However, being that it was Cain…

Cain looked up with a smile on his face as Shido reentered the room.

"You believe me now, I see," Cain greeted. Shido sat down in a chair opposite to him. Shido rested his head into his hand and sighed. Cain placed his glass down and leaned forward, "You don't look so well. Are you feeling alright?"

"Not particularly no," Shido replied, sounding exhausted. "It's been one of those days."

Cain said nothing as he poured him a glass. Shido closed his eyes half way. He felt so unbearably tired. As if he hadn't slept at all. In the back of his mind, Shido guessed that the angel inside him was doing this. Making him tired so he could rest.

"Here, drink this. It'll pick you up," Cain said. Passing it into Shido's hands, the glass fell from Shido's grip and crashed onto the floor. Shido's eyelashes fluttered as his eyes rolled back and he fell forward, welcoming the darkness of sleep as it hit him. Cain instantly caught him before he hit the floor.

"Shido? Shido, what's wrong? Tell me what's wrong? Shido?" Cain said. Shido only sighed in his sleep. "Damn it! What's wrong, Shido?"

Unable to reply, Shido simply laid against Cain's arms. The older vampire picked him up and carried Shido back into his room. Laying the lavender haired vampire on his bed, Cain unbuttoned his vest and unlaced his blouse. He listened to Shido's heart and it beat just as any vampire's heart should. Shido's breathing was normal. Cain stood up looking perplexed. Why had Shido suddenly passed out like that? Cain checked his pupils and they were normal. Perhaps he just suffered from a dizzy spell. That seemed logical. Cain took a seat next to Shido's bed and waited for him to awaken.

Dawn was arriving and Shido hadn't awoken. Cain was reluctant to leave Shido's side but he knew that he needed to return to his coffin. He walked over to the sleeping figure and bent down to whisper in his ear, "I shall return at sunset, Shido."

Placing a kiss on his cheek, Cain turned and disappeared out of the room. Just as the sun rose from across the horizon, Shido opened his eyes and sat up.

During the day, while Cain slept, Shido rose from bed and hurried down to the library. He searched for the book again and pulled it out. Studying the pages, Shido looked for something that could help him break his wedlock from Cain. Flipping page after page, Shido read until he found the context he was seeking. Here it was!

Shido read the text out loud, "Should a vampire take a mate in Vampire Wedlock and the wedlock is unwanted by the mate, then the mate must marry another to break the wedlock he or she is held under. The marriage must take place on holy ground."

Shido closed the book and placed it back on the shelf. He looked over at the clock on the mantel.

"It's time. I've spent too much here already," Shido said. He walked up to his room and found his clothes that he arrived in. Luckily they were clean. Changing into them, Shido pulled on his overcoat and headed downstairs. The wolf pack whimpered, sensing something different in their vampire companion as he withdrew a pair of sunglasses and put them on. He opened the door and they followed him outside.

He knelt down to their level, "Listen to me. I'm leaving this place and I think you all should do the same. If you don't, Cain will take his anger and frustration out on you once he realizes that I'm gone. Good-bye. I'll miss you."

Shido stood up and grew his wings. He heard the wolf call as he flew away.

Shido flew carefully so he wouldn't be detected. It was just sunset when he finally returned back to his office. Exhausted from the long flight, Shido opened his door.

"MR. SHIDO!"

He found himself on his back with Riho hugging and kissing him, telling him how much she was worried about him while she sobbed her eyes out. Shido smiled, and held her close. God, he had missed her so much.

"Shido, is it really you?" Yaiyo asked as Shido got to his feet with Riho still attached to him. "Where the hell have you been? We were worried sick about you!"

"Yaiyo, I'm exhausted beyond care so please give me a few minutes," Shido said.

"I'll make you some coffee if you want?" Riho asked.

"Riho's special brew?" he asked with a smile. Riho nodded with tears in her eyes and she went to make him some while humming.

"Shido," Guni cried and flew over towards him. He hugged him. "We were so worried about you. We thought that the Breed had-" the little fairy broke down into happy tears.

Shido sat on the couch as Riho handed him his coffee. They waited patiently for Shido to tell him what happened. And when he did, they couldn't believe it.

"So you were with Cain the whole time," Yaiyo said.

"Yes. Because I didn't leave right away, he'd gotten it into his head that I was going to stay. He was quite mistaken. Also, I need you all to listen very carefully for what I'm about to say because I've yet to understand this myself," Shido said. "When I confronted the Breed, I was slowly bleeding to death. When I passed out something happened. Before I died an angel united with me and helped saved my life. So I am half vampire and half angel. Because of this, the angel inside me had given me back all the memories that Cain stole from me. I remember where I was born, my parents, family, friends and my birthday. Everything. I know that before Cain come into my life, I was going to college to become a doctor."

"Are you sure it wasn't a Breed, Shido?" Yaiyo asked.

"No because Cain had already taken me back to his castle before and no Breed would want to take over a body of a vampire," Shido replied. "And uniting with the angel has given me some interesting powers. For instance, I have a stronger tolerance of the sun. I can stand under direct sunlight but my eyes are still as sensitive. Plus, I can grow wings and fly."

Shido stood up, removed his overcoat and grew them to show.

"Oh wow. They're beautiful," Riho sighed.

"Black, huh?" Yaiyo mussed.

"I also don't need to feed everyday so that's good new for you, right, Yaiyo?" Shido grinned.

"You never drained that much blood from me, Shido," Yaiyo replied.

"How did you escape from Cain, Shido?" Guni asked.

"I waited for him to go to his coffin. However, once he realizes that I'm gone he'll come looking for me. He's not the kind of person who easily gives up," Shido replied. "And there's something that I need to speak with Riho about. Privately."

Shido led Riho into the bedroom through the small kitchen and closed the door behind them. He had Riho sit down.

"Riho, you know that once upon a time in my life, before I became a private detective and meet Yaiyo, and Guni, Cain and I used to be lovers," Shido said.

"Yes, you explained this all to me before, Mr. Shido and I understand," Riho answered with a smile.

"Well, the reason why I left him because I lost someone very dear to me. I had a little sister once. During the time when I was a vampire, I was wild and out of control. I killed people to feed on their blood. One day, a disease broke out in the city where my mother and sister lived and she died of it while my sister was killed by a vampire. When I found her small dying body, something inside my heart broke. In that moment I gained back my human heart. I couldn't bare the thought of losing my sister so I did what I thought was right and took her away with me. However, I could tell she hated me for what I had done so she… she killed herself. I lost her twice. My heart was torn up inside but that wasn't the worst part. Cain, the very vampire who I loved at the time, didn't comfort me over the lost. Someone I loved died twice and he didn't care. So I began to see him for what he really was and I didn't like what I saw, because I could become what he was. I ran away from him but he followed me everywhere I went until for a period of time he stopped."

"Oh, Mr. Shido, I'm so sorry," Riho said. "I'm so sorry you had to loose your sister."

"Riho, I… When Cain turned me into a vampire he didn't tell me something important until last night. He… There is a book translated from old vampire tongue that tells of Vampire Wedlock. When Cain took me for his lover, he also took me as his life mate in wedlock. Meaning that all this time, I am married to Cain under vampire law," Shido explained.

"No. NO! It's not true! Mr. Shido, you're-! Oh god, please tell me it's not true!" Riho screamed, sobbing. Shido grabbed her as she grew hysterical.

"Riho, listen to me!" Shido said sternly. She looked up at him with tears rolling down her face, her breath coming in hitches. He sighed and brushed her tears away. "Riho, there is a way for me to break my wedlock to Cain."

"Really?" she sounded hopeful underneath her sobbing.

"Yes. Since this is an unwanted wedlock I can break it by marrying another," Shido replied. He looked very serious and knelt down, "Riho, listen. I'm not going to ask you to marry me to help break up my wedlock with Cain altogether. If Vampire wedlock were never formed, I would ask you to marry me anyway because I do love you very much. You're the person who I would like to spend the rest of eternity with."

"Mr. Shido…"

"Riho, will you marry me to become my wife, and help me break my wedlock to Cain so that we can be together?" Shido asked.

"I… Yes!" Riho cried, throwing her arms around his neck. "Yes! I'll marry you! I've always wanted this since the day we first meet and now it's- Oh, I can't believe it!"

"I don't have a ring but," Shido thought for a moment. He thought of something and bit his wrist. He held it up to her, "Here, drink some of my blood and you'll be given the gift to walk out in the sun again. I know it'll work because the angel inside me told me it would."

Riho took his wrist and drank. Looking up at him, her eyes flashed a different color and she smiled, "Thank you."

"When should we marry, Riho? I'd like to do it as soon as possible," Shido said.

"Let's do it tomorrow afternoon, Mr… Shido," Riho smiled. She suddenly jumped up. "Oh, I'll need a dress and flowers! What about a cake and-"

"I'll take care of all that, Riho, You just need to worry about a dress and the bouquet," Shido smiled.

"Oh, this is so exciting. I want to tell everybody!" Riho sang.

"Why don't we start with Guni and Yaiyo," Shido asked.

"About Yaiyo. I know she likes you. Do you think she'll get upset and not let us feed off of her anymore?" Riho asked.

"I'm no longer able to turn other people into vampires so if she does, I'll go feed off the sleeping and you'll feed through me, okay?" Shido said.

"Then I guess we're all set, Shido," Riho said, wrapping her arms around his. She rested her head against him, "Just as long as we're together, I don't care about anything else."

Smiling, Shido lead her back to others and told his two other companions about their marriage, and why.

"Isn't that rather selfish, Shido. Marrying Riho only to break your wedlock with Cain," Yaiyo said, crossing her arms.

"But Shido said that even if he wasn't, he'd marry Riho anyway," Guni said, sticking up for her friend. "Besides, they really care for each other that much."

"Please don't be mad, Yaiyo. We'd really like for you to come to our wedding," Shido said.

"I'll need a maid of honor after all," Riho added. She looked up at her, "Please?"

Yaiyo looked at her and sighed, "You know I can't say no when you give me that face. All right. I'll come to your wedding."

"Thank you!" Riho said hugging her. She then began to pace around the room, "Hmmm, but what about a dress. Let me think…"

Cain rose from his coffin. He walked over to a chest and opened to with drew a bouquet of black roses he had hidden. He passed the large portrait of his parents and smiled at his mother. She would be so happy to learn that her son had been able to find such a beautiful life mate.

Cain walked into the dinning room and waited for Shido to come down. When an hour passed, Shido hadn't arrived. Cain frowned.

"He must be sleeping in," Cain said and headed up to Shido's room to wake him. Pushing the doors open, Cain walked in and headed for the bed. He stopped when he saw that Shido wasn't there. Growing frustrated, Cain searched the bathroom. Growling, Cain stormed out of the bedroom and checked every room but Shido was nowhere. Snarling, Cain torn the roses apart.

"Shido! Where are you?" Cain roared, storming outside. "Does he really think I'll let him go? That he can escape from me?"

Inside a church, Shido stood at the Alter. He was dressed in an elegant black tuxedo that he had taken from his wardrobe from Cain's castle. Shido had gone to get a marriage license. Riho had found a wedding dress in her family's attic that he great grandmother had bought from a foreign dressmaker. It was made from cream-colored satin with matching lace. The dress was shoulder-less with a flared layered skirt that trailed from behind. The sleeves were puffy at the shoulders and close fitting from the elbows to the pointed end of the sleeves. Riho wore a lace choker around her neck. Her long hair was down with her sides pulled back into a bun with flowers and the veil. A bouquet of white roses mixed with baby' breath completed the look. Yaiyo wore one her favorite dressed that was lavender and also carried a matching bouquet with irises, and white roses.

Yaiyo agreed to be the one who gave Riho away since both of her parents were dead. Riho was slightly trembling as Yaiyo lead her down to the alter where Shido stood. Guni was hidden in Shido's hair that he wore down for this event.

"Who gives this bride away?" the priest asked.

"I do," Yaiyo said, giving Rihio's hand to Shido.

Like most weddings, the priest said his part and asked Riho, and Shido to state their vows.

"Riho, I love you so and you've made me so happy accepting to be my wife. I promise that I will love you and make you the most happiest woman for all eternity we share together," Shido said.

Yaiyo brushed a few tears away.

"Shido. I've never been happier in my whole life as I am today when I take you as my husband. I love you so much and I promise to make every day just as wonderful, and filled with love as we are now," Riho said.

They gave each other their rings.

"With a kiss, I pronounce you man and wife," the priest said.

Shido flipped over the veil and kissed her. Thus, his marriage with Riho had broken his wedlock to Cain and he gained a better person for a life mate. The young women he truly loved.

Witnessing this event through a mirror, Cain slammed his fist, breaking the mirror as he howled in rage and despair.

"SHIDO!"
