I.
He is small enough
To be an easy target,
Smart enough
To make them feel
Small.


She is not like him.
Though she is small she is strong,
Stands against
Them and walks him
Home.


II.
She still holds his
Hand each time they run.
She finds a place to hide
And they try not to laugh
As their hunters pass.


They are safe here
Hidden together.
She snuggles against him
To stifle her laughter
And his breath catches.


Later they'll go
To the library.
There he can save her from
Her classes the same way
She keeps saving him.


III.
He can save the world.
She tells him so
And he believes her
Because she's never lied to him
Before.


Then she says she can't.
She says she's not
Smart enough to make
A difference so she's going
To leave.


She'll join the army.
He's terrified
Something will happen
To her but she insists she needs
To go.


They are both crying.
She runs her hands
Through his hair and makes
A promise to come back and he
Trusts her.


IV.
He kneels in front of the
Cross and closes his eyes.


She is small but so strong
And she snuggles close and


Tries so hard with her grades
And smiles at him from the


Plane and keeps her promise
Each time he shuts his eyes.
