This Is Poetry—Let Me School Ya!
by iloveanimecartoons
Original November 13, 1997
Ladies and gentlemen, lend me your ears
I feel the need to school a particular person in here
But, it's aneasy lesson, so,please, have no fear
Someone told me my style sounds like diary pages
The truly open-minded know poetry comes in many stages
Many levels, many degrees, and on many plateaus
Is poetry—can you dig it?
And, just to let you know
Poetry needs no rhyme to have reason, but, for reasons of structure, this one does To satisfy the prejudged thought of what poetry was
We don't go pointing fingers—you know who you are
…Shmucks…
My feelings aren't so soft as to beef orgive a fuck
As I've said before, ignorance comes from not knowing—can you feel me?
If you don't understand poetry ask a question and you will be
put down, by a poet that's down, on types and categories of this art
There's limericks, haiku, scat, rap, and statements—those are just a few to start Poetry comes from reality, the gut, the soul, the heart
And, you, with your comments—you think you'reso smart (humph!)
And, you wanna dissmy poetry?
Baby, don't take me there
Justthink of all the great poets who didn't rhyme before I was here
I double dare you to say, to Maya Angelou, “Your poem, `Just Talking' , wasn't the bomb”
Or “It didn't even keep a rhyme.” But, see, she's too intelligent to respond
Quincy Jones is a poet—oh, you probably didn't know it
Any time you can get a deep fluent rhyme to touch your heart and stimulate your mind
that's the sign of atrue poet —make me feel it, words reveal it's cool, Daddy-O! And the flow, so rhythmatic—Pseudo-Afro-Asiatic
With a cool vibe and a mellow beat to kick in my ear
Can you hear it?
This is poetry—let me school ya!
Open your third eye and inhale the funk, the words, the feeling these poets have blessed you with
I hope, next time, you'll think of what you've tampered with
This is the Love Jones—show us some love and some pride
And, if you can't dig it, leave! (It's not that cold outside!)
OPEN YOUR MIND
(And, respect the mic!)
