It was a time of change for everyone, especially since there was a graduation being held soon at Susumu High this afternoon. It was a happy time, but also sad for some. Hachirou was going to have to see one of his closest family members, Shichirou, graduate. Which, was a good thing, but it was also disappointing because his favorite big brother was soon to go away in the fall, to a college far away where he and Takeshi both got football scholarships. Despite the fact his brother was going to move away, he was happy that at least Takeshi would be there to take care of him.
Against Shichirou’s better judgement, he listened to Takeshi when he said that the least they should do is tell their mothers about their relationship.
Before the ceremony was to start the two boys stood in their ceremonial gowns that were a light yellow while the cap was a matching yellow with a gold and blue tassel. “So… now?” Shichirou questioned nervously, mostly afraid of how his mother would act.
“Of course, you’re not gonna chicken out on me now after I told you I loved you, are you? Try not to worry about it so much. We’re just giving our moms the benefit-of-the-doubt, it doesn’t really matter if they approve or not, right?” Takeshi assured Shichirou, giving him a squeeze, not quite a hug.
To their luck, they noticed that Shichirou’s mom, along with Hachirou and Kurou, were sitting near Takeshi’s mom, along with his little sister. They might as well get it over with, and tell them both at once.
When they walked over, they saw Hachirou get up to go look for someone, although he pretty much just wanted to miss the possible confrontation.
“Mom, Miss Matsushita,” Takeshi began, catching both of the women’s attention. “Me and Shichirou have something important to tell you.”
“Okay, we’re all ears,” the darker woman that was Takeshi’s mother, spoke.
“Well it’s about me and Shichirou here… we love each other a lot. So, that’s why we wanted to let you both know that we’re dating now,” Takeshi announced, before giving Shichirou a chaste kiss on the cheek, making the tall blond blush in embarrassment.
“I guess all I can say is, although I’m not totally enthralled about this, you two are good men that deserve each other, and I wish you the best,” Shichirou’s mother explained. Her explaination, to Shichirou, seemed slightly put on, but he could see that she was trying to get past hating the fact that her ‘man-of-the-house’ is gay, and there was a little bit of truth in her words.
“Well Takeshi, whatever makes you happy. I can’t really argue, you’re a grown man now and you can love whomever you want, I’m just slightly disappointed that I won’t be having grandkids but… I’m happy for you two,” Takeshi’s mother added as well.
“Thanks mom,” Takeshi said, hugging his mother. “Well me and him better get going, we’re gonna be walking across that stage soon, right Shichirou?”
“Right,” he agreed, smiling. He was so happy he almost wanted to cry, but refrained from doing such, at least in front of his mom. However, when the two boys were back stage, he did start crying. The tears just started falling, without warning.
“Shichi, what’s wrong?” Takeshi questioned, putting an arm around his boyfriend.
“I’m sorry, I must look so stupid but… I’m just so happy. I can’t help it. I’m happy because I’m graduating, because I have you, because our mom’s accepted us loving each other, and because my mom finally referred to me as a man. She said we’re two good men. I don’t think my mom’s ever referred to me as a man before not out of sarcasm, she’s always called me delicate, sensitive, and a pussy. But now, I’m a complete man in her eyes,” Shichirou sobbed.
Takeshi kissed the blond, before remarking, “You’re so silly, crying on our graduation,” he teased playfully.
“I know,” Shichirou laughed.
Shouta just arrived inside the school auditorium, and was looking around for Ryuunosuke. He finally spotted him, near a group of older guys, no doubt fellow seniors who were into sports. They were talking and laughing, so Shouta was kind of hesitant to go over there, feeling he’d be the little clingy kid to Ryuu, or like the little annoying brother. Sure, they had been going out for the past few months, but Shouta wasn’t quite sure how open he was about it towards his friends. So the question still remained, should he just walk up to him now, or wait until he was alone? He came all the way here to see him graduate, so he figured he should at least talk to him before he heads on stage.
Soon, he saw his chance as he excused himself from the group before walking away somewhere. Shouta followed after him, trying to call his attention.
Ryuu finally stopped and turned, before being met with the huge onyx eyes that were his little Shouta’s.
“Surprise,” he laughed, before hugging the taller boy.
“Well it definitely is a surprise, I was actually getting kind of disappointed because you never said you were going to come to my graduation,” Ryuu confessed. “So besides you, the only other people that came where my parents and grandparents… They brought the cam quarter and the camera.”
“Lucky you,”
“Yeah I know. My mom was wondering if you were going to come,”
“Did you ever tell your mom and dad about us?” Shouta cut right to the chase.
“Yeah, I did. My mom still likes you just the same, and she said that she’s glad I’ve got myself a little adorable boyfriend. Plus, she said she figured I liked you, because the other friends I keep aren’t as cute,” Ryuu explained, and they both laughed.
“She sounds like she’s jealous of you,” Shouta teased.
“Possibly. Now my dad… he just seems kind of indifferent about it. Whenever I say the word boyfriend, he just kinda grunts or shrugs it off. So I don’t know about him,”
Their conversation was interrupted by an announcement saying that the graduates should proceed backstage as the ceremony was about to begin soon.
“Well I’m about to go, I’ll be looking for your little smiling face out there Shouta,” he said grinning, before kissing the boy quickly and heading off.
Shouta smiled, and went to go find where Ryuu’s parents were sitting before he turned around and saw Hachirou with… a girl, was it?
“Hi Hachirou,” Shouta greeted with his usual friendly vigor. “You must be here to see your big brother graduate, huh?”
“Yep, what brings you here?” the blond questioned casually.
“I came to see Ryuunosuke,” Shouta explained.
“Is he your boyfriend now?”
“Yep!” Shouta exclaimed. “Is she your…”
“Boyfriend? Yep,” Hachirou replied, waiting to see the younger boy’s reaction.
“You’re a boy?” he questioned towards Mako. “Oh I’m so sorry, I thought you were a girl! I feel so rude…”
“Nah, I get that a lot. Just between you and me… that’s kind of what I was working towards,” Mako explained, before the two started laughing.
It was kind of weird to see his old boyfriend and his new boyfriend laughing together like that, and only now did it occur to Hachirou how similar they are. Both Shouta and Mako have that same kind of child-like naiveté about them, always so innocent and loving unconditionally… Shouta wasn’t like this when he was dating him, so maybe things did work out for the better despite the pain. After all, maybe this Ryuunosuke has something to offer Shouta that he didn’t, because he just seems genuinely happier now. Sometimes… when one door closes, a better one opens. Because still, if they hadn’t broken up, then he wouldn’t be with Mako right now, would he? And who knows, maybe he can just be friends with Shouta after all this? There’s always possibility.
“Hachirou,” Mako remarked, tugging on the blond’s sleeve like a child trying to get his attention, “We’d better find our seats, the ceremony is about to begin.”
“That’s right. Maybe we can catch up some other time, Hachirou?” Shouta suggested.
“Yeah, I’d like that,” Hachirou agreed, before they made their separate ways.
“Ooh, your friend has a boyfriend too?” Mako squealed as they walked towards where Hachirou’s mom was. “We should go on a double date!”
The graduation ceremony went off without a hitch (and Shichirou didn’t trip like he was afraid he was going to).
Afterwards, Shouta had to say his goodbye to Ryuu and head home where he knew his brother and Ren Kojima would be waiting, hopefully with food, since he was starving.
But when he got home, he found more than just food, he found his mom and dad too!
“Mama?” he questioned in shock, looking at his brown-haired mother, then he looked at his father, virtually identical to him.
“Shouta, there you are!” his mom squealed, jumping up to hug her dumbfounded son. “We just got here not much more than an hour ago, and my baby wasn’t here, I was so sad! Now, don’t forget to hug your daddy.”
After the small woman with the incredibly strong grip released him, he walked over to his dad and gave him a squeeze. “I missed you guys, I thought you weren’t coming back…” Shouta almost cried.
“We were worried we wouldn’t be back Shouta, we never wanted to leave you two thinking you were all alone in the world. I’m glad to see that Akira has been holding down the fort well hasn’t he?” their dad said, before smiling at his older son.
“Yes dad,” he responded.
“And even found himself a nice boyfriend as well!” Mrs. Nanami giggled, elbowing her son.
Kojima and Shouta looked at Akira, whom without a doubt was blushing. That boy could be embarrassed so easily it wasn’t even funny. But still, besides the fact he was a twenty-two year old man, he did look rather cute when he blushed. At least that’s what Kojima thought.
“When did all this happen?” Mr. Nanami questioned.
“A few months ago dad,” Akira explained.
“Well I’m glad for you son,” he replied, patting the eldest son on the back. “Because I’m sure that now that we’ve come back, you’d like to move on with your life, wouldn’t you? Y’know, go to college, move out… all that jazz. I never had planned on holding you back like this, after all Shouta is your little brother, not your son.”
“I know dad, but it’s not like I didn’t… I mean, I didn’t mind taking care of Shouta and working to earn the money. He’s my brother and-”
“I know all that Akira, but that’s not what I’m talking about!”
“Honey…” Mrs. Nanami broke in. “Lets talk about this later. We just got back and the last thing I want to have is another argument. Let’s go eat the lunch Akira fixed, shall we?”
And so Mrs. Nanami managed to avoid another argument, and keep the peace among the father and son. At least for awhile, anyways.
They all headed into the kitchen and sat at the round table where a lunch spread was set before them, all prepared by Akira, who had become quite a decent cook in the time he had needed to learn how.
“Shouta, has anything big happened with you as well over the past couple months?” Mr. Nanami asked.
“Yeah… a lot. For starters, in the middle of the year I transferred to another school,” Shouta began.
“You don’t go to Fukui anymore?” the father exclaimed.
“Yeah, I go to Susumu now,” Shouta continued to explain. “When I was in Fukui, they suggested I go to Susumu because my grades were so good and they had better scholarship programs and stuff.”
“But what about the money? Where did you get the money to go there Shouta?” Mrs. Nanami joined in as well, concerned look on her face.
“Dad, due to our position they agreed to let him go there half tuition, and I just took on some extra hours. No big deal,” Akira spoke, trying to smooth everything over.
But it wasn’t smoothed over. “Shouta, you know I love that school and all… I graduated from there, Akira did too… but now due to this set back I don’t think we can send you there next year. I’ve most likely lost my job, from me and your mom being stranded all those months, I’m not sure how much is left in the bank, there’s just-”
“Dad, it’s okay. I’ll go back to Fukui next year, I think I’ve gotten a lot out of Susumu since I’ve been there,” Shouta said, with such a look on his face that only his mom happened to notice, taking it in her mom way as though he’d met someone special. And she smiled.
Akira met someone, and so has Shouta, which made the mother’s heart swell with delight. Someone was looking after her baby after all.
Tonight Gorou Kurosawa, Hachirou’s half brother, was throwing a “Beginning of Summer” party, and since he has such a soft spot for Hachirou, he let the little blond invite some of his friends too.
So that’s how Kaito ended up stressing over what to wear to this party. He’s not usually the type to dress and impress, but since his best friend has got a boyfriend, he wants one too. His new lease on life is to just stay friends with his life time best friend, and just enjoy himself. But, since he’s going to a party, why not try and look a little good, to attract the lonely wandering eye?
Maybe these black jeans Hachirou bought him, Kaito mused, thinking how his friend said they flattered his ass. He blushed, but figured he wanted other guys to check him out, the same way he’d be checking out them. So he pulled the jeans out and laid them on his bed. Now for the shirt, he thought about wearing a black t-shirt, typical Kaito attire, but he decided he wanted to wear something a bit more colorful so he wouldn’t appear unapproachable. Red? No, matches his hair too much. Green? Looked weird on him. Then he pulled out a turquoise shirt with black and white stars on it. He liked this shirt on him, it was a pretty shade of blue, and plus it was tight enough to show off what few muscles he had. He wasn’t like Hachirou the football player, but he was slightly toned.
He pulled on the shirt and jeans, before checking himself out in the mirror. He decided he’d put on his black and white studded belt, and some black studs in his ears.
There was a knock at his door, and he called, “Come in!”
Kanon walked into his room, giving him a once over before saying, “Dare I say it? My brother actually looks cute!”
“You say that as though I’ve never looked nice before,” Kaito commented.
“Well it’s weird, I’m just giving you a compliment. You trying to meet somebody at this party? ‘Cuz looking as hot as you do now, you’ll find yourself a nice cute guy. Honest,” Kanon complimented him.
“Thanks Kanon,” he replied, grinning, feeling proud of himself.
“Wear that one cologne you wear on occasion, too,” she suggested. “Gosh, I’m so jealous, you get to go to a college party and meet older guys. Don’t worry, I won’t tell daddy,” she characteristically giggled.
Kaito hadn’t thought of that. Older guys? Now he was feeling really nervous. “Do you think any older guys are going to want anything to do with me?”
“Sure, I’m sure there’s plenty of people who go for the cute little boy look. Now, wear your black converses and you’ll be all set, okay?” she instructed, fashion expert Kanon was.
“Alright,” he agreed, already pulling the shoes on his feet.
“Kaito, some friends are waiting for you outside the house,” Mr. Chiase called from Kaito’s doorway.
Once their father left, Kanon gave her brother a punch in the shoulder, saying, “Go get ‘em tiger, after all we can’t both be single.”
Takeshi took a drink from the beer he was holding, before plopping the can back on the table, muttering to Shichirou with disgust, “Ew, why is Ryuunosuke here?”
“Well, because Hachirou invited Shouta, and Shouta and Ryuunosuke are dating, so naturally he’d come,” Shichirou explained logically.
“Meh, hopefully we won’t come across each other again for the rest of the night,” Takeshi commented, before putting his free arm around Shichirou, pulling him close. He tended to do this because he was naturally pretty possessive, but Shichirou didn’t seem to mind the coziness.
“I didn’t expect to find you here all hugged up with some guy,” a familiar voice spoke.
Shichirou looked up to find his orange-haired brother Rokurou standing in front of him and Takeshi on the couch.
“You got yourself a boyfriend didn’t you?” Rokurou mused, giving Takeshi a once over, and in turn he responded with his defensive, territorial glare.
“Rokurou, this is my boyfriend Takeshi. Takeshi, this is my older half-brother Rokurou,” Shichirou introduced the two of them.
“…Is he being good to you?” Rokurou questioned.
“Of course he is!” Shichirou replied.
“You’d better be…” Rokurou threatened Takeshi, pointing at him. “You’re gonna take care of my little brother, right?”
“Of course I am, I love Shichirou,” Takeshi assured him, before kissing the boy, to prove it.
Shichirou wondered why Rokurou was suddenly being so possessive, they often didn’t even speak to each other, and generally didn’t care for each other. In fact you wouldn’t think they acknowledged each other until that episode in the hotel room. Neither of them understood where that came from, besides boredom and partial longing. Still, that’d only happened once, and after the funeral they went back to not speaking like usual. Now, Rokurou was acting like a regular big brother would. Why? Well, he figured because Rokurou might be jealous.
“Takeshi can you wait here a second? I need to talk to him about something,” Shichirou announced, dragging the older brother away in private.
“What did you want to talk to me about?” Rokurou asked, looking suspicious.
“Why are you suddenly acting like a big brother, threatening him and stuff? You’ve never cared about me and you know it,”
“Well don’t say never. Sure I didn’t at first but-”
“Let me rephrase that: you don’t love me as your little brother, you really love me, don’t you?” Shichirou questioned sternly.
“Yeah. That’s pretty messed up, huh? But I’ll be ok, I can find someone else I like that’s not related to me. It’s just, there’s just something about you that makes me like you. You’ve got that unconditional love and sweetness about you that’s so strong that even a mother can’t give it, I know mine hasn’t. I’m a sucker for sweet boys,” Rokurou confessed, before giving Shichirou a chaste kiss on the cheek. “So if that dude does anything wrong to you, I’ll kick his ass, because you don’t deserve that. And Hachirou will too, I know so because he’s just a good little brother.”
“Thanks Rokurou,” Shichirou spoke softly, touching where he’d kissed him.
“So, we’ll keep in touch,” Rokurou concluded, before giving a small wave and walking away. He didn’t say that so much as a promise, because they’ve never really kept in touch, but it was a shot. Shichirou was happy he finally had the big brother he needed, the kind he so longed to be, despite the fact everyone liked him the way he was.
Kaito stepped out into the backyard enclosure of Gorou and Rokurou’s townhouse, where some other people were standing around chatting, drinking, eating barbecue, and other various things. He didn’t recognize a single person.
He grabbed a cold beer out the cooler, even though he didn’t like drinking, he just wanted to look like he was at least doing something. He popped off the cap and took a swig, before forcing himself not to vomit it back up. Kaito really couldn’t stand beer.
“Hey,” a tall guy with short black hair spoke, standing beside Kaito. Kaito looked into the tall, slightly muscular boy’s eyes, and thought they were a gorgeous caramel brown. “If you don’t mind me asking, how old are you?”
Oh great, the inevitable age question, Kaito thought disappointedly. “I’m sixteen,” he replied, not lying this time, since he just turned sixteen in May. “You going to reprehend me for under age drinking?”
“I don’t think I could, I’m still only seventeen,” he chuckled. “I really don’t care for beer, however, I’m just being a poser.”
“Me too,” Kaito agreed, smiling. He gave the guy a once over, thinking he was slightly over dressed for the party in his maroon short-sleeved button-up and some tan cargo shorts. But he also looked kind of sexy at the same time. “So what’s your name, stranger?”
“Rikuto,”
“I’m Kaito,”
After that, there was a slight awkward silence before Rikuto said, “You know, I’m not very good at this whole flirting thing.” And Kaito giggled, in that cute kind of young sounding way he tended to do when he was around someone he liked. Well, at least he thought he liked him, they’d only just met but he thought this guy was gorgeous, and kind of sweet.
Rikuto almost reached to his face to push up his glasses like he tended to do instinctively when things got kind of awkward, but then he remembered Mako said he should wear contacts tonight to show off his pretty eyes. His face felt naked without his glasses, but he’d just have to adjust for the night.
“You know, I’m not very good at it either. Although, I’ve never met anyone who’d openly admit it,” Kaito confessed as well.
“I figured why not tell you? It’s not like I’m going to woo you by being charming and smooth if I lack the ability to do so, right?” Rikuto explained.
Kaito smiled again, before saying, “I’m sorry, but you sound so proper. It’s cute though.”
“Well, you smile a lot, not that I’m complaining,” Rikuto responded.
“I only started smiling so much when you came around,” Kaito murmured, his cheeks tinted pink. Now he was the one not being very smooth, he was acting like a little girl, giggling, smiling and blushing like this. But this guy pretty much rendered him into a puddle of goo in his presence.
Rikuto was now trying to rack his brain for something to say, but for two considerably shy people, it’s hard to continue a conversation. Especially when you like the other person, and Kaito’s last comment led him to believe the red-head actually liked him back.
Kaito held out his free hand not holding the beer, and asked, “Will you come inside with me? I need to find my friend Hachirou.”
“Hachirou?” Rikuto questioned. “What a coincidence, he’s the one that invited me here. Otherwise, I’d never had gone to a college party. But I’m sure glad I had,” he said with a smile of his own, before following Kaito inside the house.
It didn’t take the pair too long before they found Hachirou with Mako.
“Hey Hachirou, can I pull you away for a second?” Kaito asked, before pulling the blond away regardless, not even waiting for a reply.
Rikuto was now left standing with Mako, before he asked, “How many beers have you had?”
“Um, I think I’m… fourth. Something like that,” he replied, before laughing kind of loudly.
Yep, he was drunk, Rikuto sighed. Not that it really took a guy who was small like him too much to get drunk. And when Mako was drunk, you really had to watch him or he’d certainly make a fool of himself.
“So, you met Kaito?”
“Yeah. I think I like him. At least as far as I know, I’ve only known him for like fifteen minutes,” Rikuto explained, shrugging.
“Stop being such a downer!” Mako exclaimed, hitting Rikuto rather hard on the back. “You like him, but you’re just afraid to get your hopes up aren’t you?”
“Well, pretty much,” he sighed. “Considering I’m the only one in the club who’s never had a boyfriend before. So I’m trying not to get too ahead of myself.”
“Then take your time,” Mako advised, actually pretty well considering he actually was listening to Rikuto while he was drunk. “And then you can bang him later,” Mako snickered, before laughing obnoxiously again.
Rikuto just shook his head, his face red from only momentarily thinking about it. He didn’t like talking to Mako like this, he really didn’t, he’s talking crazy. “Mako I am not-”
“He looks like he needs it,”
“Shut up,”
Meanwhile, Kaito pulled Hachirou off to the side of the room, before exclaiming, “I think he likes me!”
“…Who?” Hachirou questioned, confused.
“Rikuto,” Kaito answered, smiling.
“I never would’ve thought it…” Hachirou remarked, looking across the room where Mako and Rikuto stood.
“You know Hachirou, I’m glad we decided to just stay friends,” Kaito blurted out of nowhere.
“Why do you say that?” Hachirou asked.
“Because… we never would’ve met such great people if we had. You wouldn’t have Mako and I… wouldn’t have had a chance with Rikuto. That’s if me and him-”
“Don’t think like that, just get to know him now, and who knows what’ll happen? Keep your head up,” Hachirou reassured the red-head, putting a comforting arm around him. “I think… this summer is going to have a lot of promise.”
“I think…” Kaito confessed. “…That the rest of our lives is going to have a lot of promise.”
The End
A.N: I know it seems kind of sudden, but there it is. Most of my endings seem kind of sudden to me because I really don't like ending my stories at all but well, it's lasted for 17 chapters and that was much long enough and I appreciate everyone for reading it. It was a perfect enough ending in my opinion, hope you all think so too!

PLEASE REVIEW! ^_^ I LOVE OPINIONS
