Chapter 16: Jealousy
Sage's P.O.V
Sage sat quietly in the backseat of the yellow Chevy Camaro, her fingers fiddling with the strings on her thin hoodie as she exchanged a knowing look with Mia. It was Monday morning, and both girls were being driven to school.
Chase was speeding down the busy road, swerving in and out of the morning rush hour traffic and breaking just about every law along the way. Kel, who was riding shotgun, seem unfazed by his brother's reckless driving and had his usual bored expression in place. The atmosphere in the car was thick with tension, no one had spoken a word since leaving the house and the silence only grew.
The brothers had remained true to their word, allowing the girls to return home on Monday. However, they weren't ready to let them out of their sights just yet. After dropping the girls' home, the brothers waited in the car as they showered and dressed for school. They had insisted on dropping them to school, though it was obvious that it was merely an excuse to ensure their secret was kept after returning the girls home.
Sage was surprised that Chase didn't follow her into her house, since he had a tendency of sneaking up on her when she least expected it. Both brothers had remained in the car, making it clear that if they tried anything they would know. The warning was unnecessary, especially since neither girl was foolish enough to pull the same thing twice.
The rest of the weekend had gone by a lot quieter then she had expected. Sage leaned her head against the window, heaving a long drawn out sigh. Chase had made it his mission to ignore her after their little encounter in the kitchen that night. She was beginning to think that maybe he regretted it…
Both brothers had managed to make themselves scarce for the remainder of the weekend, only popping in whenever they needed something. Sage still couldn't wrap her head around what had happened that night between her and Chase. Every time she closed her eyes she could still feel his lips and tongue dominating her, his rough hands roaming her body as she clung to him, wanting nothing more then to bring him closer…to feel him inside her…
Stop it!” Sage thought, scolding herself. She sat up a little straighter in her seat, her eyes drifting between Chase and Kel in hopes that they weren't listening to her thoughts right now. Her eyes settled on Chase, silently wondering what the hell his problem was. He hadn't brought up the kiss since it happened, and she was debating with herself on whether or not she should just come out and ask him about it herself.
Her thoughts were then cut short when they pulled into the school parking lot. All eyes were on them as they stepped out of the car. People were already beginning to whisper, clearly wanting to know why the new guys were hanging around the same two girls they have been publically rejecting for the past few days. Sage pulled her bag out of the car and turned to leave with Mia when Chase gripped her arm and yanked her into him.
“Remember what we talked about, little witch.” He said with a wicked grin on his handsome face.
“Yeah, I heard you the last fifty times…you're hurting my arm,” Sage hissed back with a glare.
Chase loosened his grip but didn't release her. “I'm gonna be hurting a lot more then just your arm if you piss me off,” he threatened his voice deepening.
“Yeah I got it, you're big and strong and I'm scared, now let me go,” she shot back dryly.
Chase forced a smile, the muscles in his face twitching in irritation. “Have a nice day, witch.” He said before releasing her arm and turning to leave with his brother.
“And stop calling me that!” she exclaimed before he could leave.
“Oh I'm sorry, do you prefer bitch?” Chase asked dryly.
“No I—”
“Bitch it is then.” He said ignoring her protest and walking away.
Sage tightened her grip around the shoulder of her bag until her knuckles turned white.
God, he pisses me off!” she seethed to herself as Mia came to stand beside her.
“Relax,” Mia comforted, “He's just naturally a jerk, nothing you can do about it.”
“I can set him on fire,” Sage replied as they walked into the school.
“Something tells me they're use to fire,” Mia said smirking wittily.
Sage rolled her eyes, “Of course, because they're from hell…well they should go back.”
“Stop pouting,” Mia said laughing. “Did you even ask him a about the kiss yet?”
“What's the point? I'm just going to get some smartass reply,” Sage replied heaving a sigh. “Why are you so calm about this?”
“Because we're free,” Mia replied with a bright smile.
“Not entirely, and that's not what I meant. I mean, Kel hasn't kissed you yet and he hasn't even brought up the other night with what almost happened between you two,” Sage said.
“We're mostly free, and I'm not worried about that.” Mia declared confidentially.
“Oh yeah?” Sage said smiling at her friend's ability to always remain sure of herself.
“I'll get him…may take some time, but I will,” she replied smiling cunningly.
“That poor guy…” Sage said teasingly while shaking her head. Mia was use to getting her way more so then Sage was, but this one was going to be a challenge for her. But it was more then that. Sage had never seen her friend try so hard to get a guy's attention before, least one that keeps rejecting her.
Maybe she really likes him…” Sage thought smiling to herself. Mia has been her best friend since preschool and all she wanted was to see her happy. Mia always lucked out when it came to guys. They would either be complete assholes who don't know how to treat a girl, or lying bastards who fucked around on her with other girls. It would be nice to see her with a good guy, one she deserves.
Kel may be a lot of things, but he didn't seem the type to do those things to a girl. But then again, he did hold them hostage for three days…
“I'll see you at lunch,” Mia said pulling Sage from her thoughts. Sage nodded before hugging her friend and making her way towards her locker.
“Please don't be there…please don't be there…” she whispered under her breath as she neared her locker. Sage released a sigh of relief when she saw that Chase was nowhere to be seen, which meant he probably already went to class.
Sage opened her locker and began replacing the books in her bag with the ones for her next few classes. Focusing at the task at hand, she didn't notice the aura approaching her from behind.
“Hey witch,” a deep voice greeted from behind, startling her. Sage dropped her books when she jumped, whipping around to face the only other person who called her by that name.
“What do you want, Scar.” She said glaring at him. Scar was one of the few demons in this town she could actually say she hated. He was a cocky bastard that was under the impression that the world belonged to him and his brother, Kai. He didn't talk to her often, but when he did he never had anything pleasant to say being the ass that he is.
“And don't call me that,” she said for the second time that day. Scar, like Chase, didn't like witches very much and whenever he called her one he would say it as if it was a bad taste in his mouth. She honestly didn't mind when Chase said it because there was no intent behind his words, he merely used it as a nickname which was why she could tolerate it from him…but not from Scar.
“Whatever, witch.” He said rolling his eyes. “I just came over here to find out what you were doing with the new kids, you and Chase seemed really…acquainted back there in the parking lot,” he said suspiciously arching an eyebrow.
“What's it to you,” Sage said while casually picking up her books. She wasn't a fool, Scar never made causal conversation with her like he was doing now, he wanted information.
“Besides,” she continued, “Don't you and your little group of rebels know everything…you know, since you run the town and all?” she asked dryly.
She knew that they didn't know shit about the brothers since Scar looked like he was about to blow an ass gasket. Chase had told her how Kai's crew were the ones disrupting the balance in this world and how he was going to deal with it. He didn't go into much detail, but she knew for a fact that both Chase and Kel were stronger then every single demon in this town, Kai and Scar included. It kind of made her feel better to know that someone was finally going to put the two mutts in their place.
“I'm curious, humor me,” he said growling impatiently.
“They dropped me and Mia to school, no big deal,” she said plainly. Demons could smell when someone was lying, which technically she wasn't. For the most part, it was the truth…she just left out the details.
“Really…cause from the looks of it, they didn't seem to like you two that much last week,” Scar pointed out his suspicion growing.
“Well you know what they say, there's a fine line between love and hate,” she replied smiling brightly.
“Right…” he drawled clearly not convinced, “So you're together then?” he asked quirking an eyebrow skeptically.
Sage tensed at the question. She couldn't lie to him because he would smell it, and she was at a loss at what to say.
“It's complicated,” she admitted once again withholding the whole truth.
“How so?” he continued to question.
“How so? None of your fucking business that's how so,” she snapped before turning to walk away. Scar's hand suddenly shot out and grabbed her arm, forcing her to face him.
I am so sick of being manhandled,” she thought while narrowing her eyes at Scar.
“Don't walk away from me when I'm talking to you, bitch.” He growled threateningly as his grip tightened around her arm, his claws digging into her skin.
“Let go,” she hissed.
“Make me,” he challenged cockily, knowing full-well that she couldn't use her powers in such a public place without the risk of hurting someone else or being seen by the principle and getting expelled.
“Tell me everything you know about these two demons, since you're so acquainted with them,” Scar demanded jerking her roughly.
“Is there a problem here?” came a deep voice from behind Sage. She didn't need to turn around to know who it was.
“Chase,” Scar greeted casually. “No problem, just having a little chat with the witch.”
Chase's eyes fell on the dog demon's hand, which was still firmly wrapped around Sage's arm, before fixing a deadly look back up at Scar. Sage glanced nervously between the two, who were now locked in an intense staring competition. She couldn't help but notice how Chase's pale blue eyes iced over, his face void of any emotions as he stared unblinkingly into Scar's amber colored eyes. It was as if Chase was looking right through him…
“Talking doesn't require your hand where it currently is,” Chase said coldly. “Remove it, now.” he ordered calmly. Sage felt a shiver run up her spine at his tone, even though it wasn't directed at her. She had never heard him sound like that before. His goofy and smartass demeanor were gone and she wasn't familiar with this side of him. He was acting so formal and detached, as if he could snap any minute now. This scared her a little since she had once witnessed him snap towards Ace that day in the classroom where this whole mess started.
“I don't take too kindly to orders, kid. So I suggest you watch your tone because I've killed for a lot less,” Scar threatened his eyes narrowing.
Chase's lips slowly turned into an ominous smirk. “What a coincidence, so have I,” he replied darkly. Suddenly, Sage found herself out of Scar's grip and pressed protectively against Chase's chest with his arm securely wrapped around her waist. He had moved so fast that not even Scar was able to catch his movement, which was evident due to the staggered expression on his face.
“Don't ever touch her again,” Chase warned calmly, his glare meeting Scar's. The two stood in the same position for another minute before the warning bell rang. Chase finally averted his gaze as he moved his arm from around her waist and threw it over her shoulder, tucking her under his arm and walking away.
The two remained silent as they walked to class, Chase yet to remove his arm even though Scar was no longer within eye range. Sage blushed at the sudden show of affection as people openly stared at them. From an outsider's perspective, it would be easy to mistake them as a couple.
“Chase,” she said finally breaking the silence, “What was that about?”
“He's probably getting suspicious, don't worry about it,” he said calmly without looking down at her. Sage merely nodded, feeling stupid for not clarifying that wasn't what she had meant. She wanted to know why he was suddenly being so protective, but she didn't want to ruin the moment. It felt nice…having him this close without threatening her in some shape or form. So she stayed quiet, snuggling a little closer to him.
Chase's P.O.V
That little prick,” Chase thought angrily. “Where the fuck does he get off talking to me like that…I should slice off his fucking balls for touching what's mine— not like the witch is mine or anything, cause she's not…I don't even care about her,” he ranted mentally as he glanced down at her.
He didn't know what came over him. He was just on his way to class when he saw her talking to dog-boy. He was going to keep walking, knowing that she wouldn't be foolish enough to confide in him about anything, but then he saw the little shit grab her arm and the next thing he knew he was standing in front of them. He read Scar's mind, going over the conservation he had with Sage and checking to see if he knew anything, which he didn't. He could tell that the two didn't like each other very much, but that didn't give him the right to touch her. After all, as far as Chase was concerned, he was the only one allowed to manhandle her.
He knew Scar was gone, and he should probably move his arm, but he didn't want to just yet. Kel told him to not get too close to the witch again, but for some reason he just couldn't help it. It was as if something was consistently pulling him towards her since that night in the kitchen and it felt…natural. It was hell for him to avoid her for the rest of the weekend. He often found himself teleporting into her room in the middle of the night when she was sleeping to just check on her. He had no idea what the fuck was wrong with him, but it was becoming harder to fight.
I should really go see Craven, something is definitely wrong…” he thought. He was so lost in his thoughts that he didn't notice all the stares they were receiving from people. When they walked into the classroom, Chase removed his arm from her shoulder before taking his seat. He missed the look of disappointed that crossed her features as she took her seat in front of him.
Throughout class, Chase noticed that the little witch kept turning to face him, her mouth opening and closing as if trying to say something before changing her mind and turning around again. After the fifth time, Chase was getting annoyed.
“If you have something to say then spit it the fuck out already, bitch,” he snapped speaking in hushed tones.
Sage blushed a pretty shade of red before glaring at him hotly. “No need to be a jerk!” she retorted. “I just need to ask you something…”
“So then ask already and stop pussyfooting around,” he said irately.
“Not now…at lunch,” she said hesitantly before facing the front of the class again.
“Whatever,” Chase snorted.
The witch had been suspiciously quiet all morning and he didn't know what to make of it. He knew what she wanted to talk about; it was the same topic he's been trying to avoid all weekend. Did she think that he was a moron? He's a frigging mind reader for Christ sakes; of course he knew that their little sexual encounter has been on her mind since it happened. He couldn't drown out her thoughts even if he tried. Her mind would constantly replay the events over and over again, often allowing her imagination to run wild by creating mental images of what she predicted would have happened if they didn't stop. Her thoughts were verging onto pornography and it became increasingly difficult for him to resist the urge of turning her fantasies into a reality. After what happened the first time, he wasn't entirely sure what would occur if he fully took her. So, staying away seemed to be the best option.
“I should push her away before she gets anymore ideas inside that witchy little head of hers…” he thought glancing at her briefly. “Yeah…that's what I'll do...”
The bell rang, dismissing the class. Chase followed Sage out of the classroom, pulling her into a more secluded area in the hall way.
“Look I don't have time for this shit, say what you gotta say now.” he insisted wanting to get this done and out of the way as soon as possible.
“But our next class is about to—” she began to protest.
“We'll go late, talk.” He demanded.
Sage gnawed nervously on her bottom lip, her eyes glued to the floor. “I just…wanted to know what you thought about what happened between us…in the kitchen that night…” she said her eyes avoiding his.
“What about it?” he scoffed impatiently.
Sage began to fidget, moving from one foot to the other. “I just wanted to know if it meant anything to you…I mean…did you feel anything?” she said her eyes finally gazing up to meet his.
Chase gazed down at her, taking note of the hopeful look in her eyes. He already knew that she had felt something because it was the only thing the witch could seem to think about all weekend. She was falling for him, that much was obvious.
“I kidnapped her, tried to kill her, rape her and threatened her family and the bitch still wants me…women.” He scoffed to himself.
A part of him wanted to tell her the truth for some reason, but he couldn't, not until he figured out what the fuck was going on with him. He would be lying if he said he didn't have feelings for the girl, but right now…lying was the only game in town. He just couldn't do this, and especially not with some little teenage witch. Besides, after this mission is over, he and Kel will leave this world and he'll never see her again. Another moment of silence passed as the two gazed longingly at each other until Chase broke the silence.
“I didn't feel shit,” he said coldly his eyes never leaving hers, “Do I look like some little fucking school girl to you, bitch? In case you haven't noticed, I'm a fucking man with a very large, very thick, penis dangling between my legs. Now, when that penis gets hard it becomes very difficult for me to think with my upstairs brain instead of my downstairs brain…and you just happened to conveniently be there when my downstairs brain was running the show. It could have been anyone with a pussy, so don't get excited.” Chase said causally with a mocking little smirk tugging up the corners of his lips.
Sage kept her gaze cast downwards, her eyes covered in shadows.
She clutched her books tightly to her chest as another moment of silence passed between them. Chase felt his smirk falter slightly. Through the shadows hiding her pale green eyes, he could make out the distinct glisten of fresh tears that had yet to fall. Surprisingly enough, he couldn't shake the feeling of being the biggest prick of the century. Feelings of guilt were not something he often felt…and he didn't like it one bit.
“Is that all, are we done here?” Chase forced out trying to push past the guilt he was currently experiencing.
“Yeah…we're done,” Sage said her voice barely above a whisper. Keeping her eyes cast downwards, she turned and walked away.
Sage's P.O.V
His words had hurt more then she had bargained for, yet she couldn't understand why. She barely knew the guy and he was clearly a cold-hearted monster, but yet…
The tears wouldn't stop flowing. She had honestly felt a connection between them that night…something she had never felt before for anyone else, and to know that her feelings were not mutual was like a knife through her heart.
I don't even know him…god I'm acting like I just lost the love of my life or something…what's the matter with me?” She thought confusingly.
She continued to walk down the hallway, too lost in her thoughts to watch where she was going. Suddenly, she collided with a hard chest, dropping her books in the process.
“I'm sorry,” she said as she bent down to retrieve her books without looking up.
“My fault, don't even worry about it Sage,” a deep, familiar, voice said before bending down to help her. Sage finally looked up, her eyes coming in contact with a very familiar face.
“Dyne?” she said surprise evident in her tone. Dyne smiled charmingly at her before handing her the rest of her books.
“Long time, huh?” he said.
Dyne was her first boyfriend from elementary school. He was a snow leopard demon with shaggy raven black hair, and lavender eyes. He was incredibly handsome with the most adorable dimples embedded in his cheeks. He was also quite possibly one of the biggest demons, aside from Shawn, that she had ever laid eyes on. He was a sweetheart, and not to mention her first crush, but over the years they had lost touch.
“Yeah it has been, and thank you,” she said smiling brightly at him.
Dyne frowned slightly, “Have you been crying?” he asked after seeing her tear streamed face and puffy red eyes.
“Oh…it's um…no big deal,” she said wiping her eyes quickly.
“You sure…want me to kick their ass?” he offered with a smirk.
Oh God no!” Sage thought, not wanting to think about what Chase could do to Dyne in a fight.
“That's sweet, but I'm fine…” she assured him. “So how have you been?”
“Good…even better since I bumped into you,” he replied smoothly.
“Always the charmer,” Sage said giggling softly.
“You know me…hey, since I have you here…I wanted to ask you something,” he said nervously scratching the back of his head. “Homecoming is coming up soon…and I was wondering if you had a date yet?”
Sage stared at him blankly for a minute before replying. “Well actually…” she began.
What am I doing? I don't have a date…and it's not like Chase is going to ask me…” she thought to herself.
“…No, I don't,” she continued.
Dyne's smile widened, “Well, would you like to go with me?” he asked bashfully.
“Sure, I'd love to.” Sage replied despite the hint of reluctance in her tone.
“Great! I guess I'll call you then,” Dyne said cheerfully before planting a kiss on her cheek and walking away.
Sage smiled at his retreating form. Dyne was a good guy, one of the few in this town. When they had first started going out they were both young and foolish, which is why it didn't work out, but they were both different now. Dyne was exactly the kind of distraction she needed to take her mind off of Chase and everything else that was going on.
Pulling out her cell phone and looking at the time, Sage realized that third period was almost over. Deciding that there was no point in going now, she began walking to her locker to put her stuff away for lunch.
She was completely unaware of the figure watching her from afar, hidden by the shadow of the stairwell. The figure's icy blue eyes narrowed, its heated gaze leaving Sage to follow Dyne's retreating form as a vicious growl ripped from its throat. As Sage began walking towards the stairwell, she could have sworn she heard a growl. She turned her head in the direction of the noise but saw nothing. She suddenly couldn't shake the feeling that she was being watched…
“Must be my imagination…” she mumbled under her breath as she quickly shook it off and continued towards her locker before the lunch bell rang, completely oblivious to the dark figure that vanished from the shadows merely seconds later.
