Chapter 24: Bombshells
Mia's P.O.V
Mia slammed her locker shut, wincing as the noise sent another shooting pain through her head. Even though she wasn't hung-over anymore, she woke up with a killer migraine this morning. She still didn't remember much from the night of the incident, just bits and pieces. Sage filled her in on all the wonderful details on their way to school. She felt guilty as hell that she was the sole reason they almost got raped and, if it wasn't for wonder dog, they would've been. She vaguely remembered Kel taking her home, laying her gently in her bed before vanishing into thin air. She woke up the next morning half naked and with a splitting headache to boot. She figured either she woke up sometime during the night and stripped down to her bra and panties, or Kel was a very naughty boy…but doubted the latter.
Her parents weren't that pleased with her either. They weren't pissed that she came home around 4am, mainly because they had no idea since Kel didn't bother using the door, opting to simply zap in and out. No, what pissed them off was the fact that she came downstairs smelling like a bar the next day. To her parents she was a perfect little angel, so it made sense for them to blame her rebellious behavior on her mysterious new boyfriend. She ended up spending the remainder of her weekend locked in her house, being lectured on how she was forbidden to ever see that boy again.
She didn't put up much of a fight on the matter either because she wasn't in the mood to defend the asshole after what he said to her at the party. The mere thought of his smug, self-righteous, pretty-boy face made her blood boil all over again. She woke up this morning with the resolve to seriously take Sage's advice to heart and just back off. She tried to keep things playful with Kel in hopes that he would come around, but that obviously wasn't working. The way he was treating her was beginning to get under her skin, making her think she may have jumped the gun a little too quickly. After all, she really knew nothing about the guy aside from the basics. Maybe he wasn't worth it…
But as soon as the thought crossed her mind, she remembered the passionate kiss they shared the night of the dance and her feelings came rushing back. Mia shook her head slightly, making her way to class. She had to stop thinking about him. She knew he wasn't a bad guy deep down, he proved that by taking her home that night. It then occurred to her that she never thanked him for that, seeing as it wasn't one of her finest moments.
Mia hadn't seen the hellhound yet, but from what she heard she should be thanking him too. She was grateful Sage wasn't badly hurt. She wouldn't be able to live with herself if it were otherwise, knowing she was the one responsible for endangering her best friend. But, of course, Sage didn't see it like that, insisting that it wasn't her fault and all is forgotten. It didn't stop the guilt from gnawing away at her though. She couldn't even blame this one on Kel. Nope, it all came down to her own stupidity.
“Throwing yourself a pity party?”
Mia turned around to glare at the bastard himself. Kel stood behind her, famous blank expression in place. She suddenly felt her earlier anger return. If she wasn't sure about it then, she was sure about it now. She was officially done chasing after Kel.
“A: stay outta my head and B: what the hell do want?” she snapped without batting an eye.
A brief look of utter shock crossed Kel's features before he masked it. Mia smiled slightly to herself, satisfied to have gotten a reaction out of the ice king himself.
“My, aren't we cranky today,” he said dryly. “Still hung-over?”
“Fuck off.” she threw over her shoulder as she proceeded to make her way to class. Kel reappeared in front of her as if he was standing there the entire time.
“Excuse me?” he said his voice dangerously low.
“Your hearing is better then mine so I know you're not deaf,” she arched a brow, staring him dead in the face. His eyes searched her face as if trying to find something he didn't see before.
“I suggest you watch your tone with me, or I'll—”
“Or you'll what?” she challenged. “Hurt me with the powers you can't use?”
Kel growled causing a satisfying smirk to spread across her own face.
“If you honestly believe I need powers to hurt you, you're far denser then I thought,” he smiled stepping closer to her. “Your bravery might be hazardous to your health you know.”
“I'll take my chances,” she replied calmly before turning to leave, feeling his eyes on her the entire time.
“Oh, by the way,” she stopped and looked back. “Thanks for taking me home the other night.” With that said she made her way to her 1st period class.
Kel's P.O.V
Kel stared after the Panther demon, not sure what to make of her little mood-swing. He was beginning to think the girl was unstable. One minute she wouldn't get off his dick and the next she's biting his head off. Still, he refused to tolerate any insolents from her. The girl would learn her place whether she liked it or not.
He was still upset about the other night, though he really had no grounds to be after their heated exchange at the party.
I don't fucking want you. You tainted demons disgust me, you have no idea how beneath me you truly are. What happened between us before was a minor lapse in judgment on my part and it meant nothing. Do you understand me? It was a mistake.
Kel cringed from the memory, his words sounding harsh even to his own ears. It was like word vomit, he just couldn't stop himself. He allowed his anger to get the better of him. She was just so infuriating…
He pinched the bridge of his nose, feeling a migraine coming on. He honestly didn't know what to do with her. Denying his attraction towards her was becoming increasingly more difficult and a part of him desperately wanted to give in. That night, when he saw her lying unconscious, her body limp as if devoid of life, his heart nearly stopped. It was a sensation, a fear, he never felt in his entire existence. Being one of the most powerful beings in the universe, with equally powerful siblings, tended to eliminate such trivial fears, knowing nothing could possibly harm you. But Mia wasn't invincible. As tough as she made herself out to be, her life was delicate and expendable. And in that moment, when he saw her prone body lying there, he feared for her life. He was relieved to find her unharmed, but his relief was quickly replaced with anger. How could she put herself in such a dangerous situation? Especially when he wasn't there to protect…
Kel quickly shook the thought from his head. No, it wasn't his responsibility to protect her. If she wanted to get shit-faced and raped by strange men, that was her business.
Don't lie to yourself.” His own voice told him. Kel growled in annoyance. Why was he doing this to himself? He wasn't in the mood for any of this today, but Chase insisted they continue attending school to keep an eye on Scar and the others, ensuring their cooperation in upholding their end of the deal. But Kel knew his brother just wanted to be close to the witch. It surprised him how well Chase was handling their situation with the girls, considering Kel was always the rational one. Although Chase fought his feelings towards the witch at first, he was slowly coming to terms with it. Kel was now the only one refusing to accept his predicament. How could he accept something without knowing what it all means? Chase was always the reckless one, so he could understand his brother's “shoot first, ask questions later” mentality, which was his current approach when handling the witch. But Kel couldn't do that. He had to know if sharks were in the water before diving in.
He walked to his first class, spotting Mia sitting on her desk talking to a petite brunette. They all had one class together, but he and Mia had three. It then occurred to him that he was approaching this all wrong. If he wanted to figure out why this girl was affecting him, both physically and emotionally, he had to get closer to her instead of pushing her away.
Kel released a long sigh before making his way over to his desk, which was luckily seated behind hers. He dropped down into his seat without sparing her a glance. She made it clear earlier that she was still pissed about the way he spoke to her at the party, and every other time for that matter. He was tired of fighting her, mainly because it was exhausting. Besides, it seems as though strange things only occurred when they least expected it, so maybe going with the flow was the best way to finding some answers.
“Hey Kel?” the brunette called breaking him out of his train of thought. He directed his gaze towards the girl, indicating she had his attention. She blushed when he looked at her, now intimidated to ask her initial question.
“How come you never bring any books to class?”
“I don't need them,” he answered as if already bored with the conversation.
Mia scoffed, diverting his attention to her. “Yeah Vick, didn't you know? Kel here is the biggest smartass in town.” The girl, Vicky, shifted her gaze back and forth between the two, noting the tension.
“Yes, it's one of my many talents, wouldn't you say?” he titled his head, a lazy smirk stretching across his handsome face.
“I wouldn't know anything about that,” Mia replied dryly her crimson gaze piercing into him. “I'd say you're all bark and no bite.”
“Didn't I already bite you?” he countered amusingly, enjoying the blush the tinged her cheeks.
“Um, I'm gonna go sit down,” Vicky interrupted before walking to her seat at the front of the class, clearly uncomfortable being caught in the cross-fire of their unresolved issues.
“You've got a lot of nerve,” Mia hissed glowering down at him.
“How so?” he arched a brow, stretching out in his seat with his arms folded across his chest and feet up on the back of her chair.
“Talking to me like nothing happened!” she snapped.
“And there it is.”
“Didn't peg you for the emotional type,” he blinked up at her, the picture of calm and control.
“You're a bastard, you know that?” she glared, her claws digging into the sides of her desk.
“I'm aware,” he smirked causing her to growl in frustration before dropping into her chair and turning to face the front.
Kel couldn't help the smile the crept onto his face. He found her antics to be amusing…even cute.
“You're sexy when you're mad.”
He watched as her body tensed before slowly turning around to face him.
Mia's P.O.V
She couldn't believe what she just heard. Getting a compliment from Kel was like pulling teeth.
“What is with this guy? Can't he make up his mind?”
“Are you high?” she asked her gaze narrowing suspiciously.
“Not at all. I'm just being honest.”
Mia didn't know what to make of his sudden behavior, but she didn't trust it. Dealing with Kel was like dealing with a bi-polar patient, he went from finger-fucking her in the driver seat of his car to cursing her very existence, all within 24 hours.
“Whatever,” she scoffed facing the front once again.
“Alright class, please turn your textbooks to chapter 6 and silently read,” the teacher instructed as he strolled into the room. The shuffling of books and paper were heard throughout the class. Mia bent down to retrieve her book from her bag, shifting uncomfortably whenever she felt Kel's gaze on her.
“Stop looking at me!” she snapped, pushing her thoughts outward towards him. Suddenly, she became lightheaded. She felt a strange sensation in her head, as if her mind was expanding. She closed her eyes and took a few steady breathes. When she opened them again, she no longer felt lightheaded but her mind felt strangely lucid. It was an eerie feeling she couldn't quite shake…
Well, this is new.”
Mia jumped in her seat, tampering down the urge to shriek since she was receiving enough concerned looks as it is.
“Get the hell outta my head!” she thought without turning around to look at Kel.
I'm not in you head,” he replied evenly. Even his mental voice sounded smug. “You're in mine.”
Mia glanced nervously around the room, stopping when the teacher caught her gaze and snapped his fingers, pointing towards her book.
She dropped her head and pretended to read. “What the hell are you talking about? I'm not a telepath.”
“Considering you just opened up your own telepathic link to my mind, I wouldn't be so quick to jump to that conclusion.”
“That isn't possible!” she yelled getting frustrated. “What did you do?”
“First of all, there's no need to yell. I can hear you just fine,” His condescending tone causing her to glare daggers into her text book. “And I didn't do anything.”
“Well I don't wanna hear your frigging voice anymore, so how do I make it go away?” she demanded in a clipped tone.
The seconds ticked away, but still no reply.
Kel!”
“Thought you didn't wanna hear my voice anymore?” he replied. Although she couldn't see his face, she could hear the smirk in his voice.
“I'll figure it out myself!” she declared before closing her eyes and concentrating. She didn't know what she was concentrating on, but she had to try something to make him go away. She just wasn't in the mood for this today. She could already feel her migraine getting worse.
You have a migraine too…interesting.”
Mia wanted to scream in frustration when she heard his voice again, her efforts dying in vein.
“Excuse me.” She raised her hand. “May I please go to the washroom?”
The teacher nodded. “Take a hall pass.”
Mia shot up from her desk, practically snatching the hall pass out of the teacher's hand as she stormed out of the room.
As she made her way to the washroom, it occurred to her that she was no different from Kel. Her emotions were all over the place as much as his were, the only difference being hers were justified. She ended up having strong feelings for a guy that turned out to be a total douche bag. What was his excuse?
She pushed open the door to the girls washroom and made her way over to the sink. She released a long sigh, throwing the hall pass down onto the counter before twisting the cold handle of the faucet. Mia leaned down, splashing cold water onto her face. She kept her eyes closed as she reached her hand out along the wall in search of the power towel dispenser. She found it, ripping off a piece and wiping the water droplets from her face. Her eyes fluttered open, looking into the mirror only to find Kel standing behind her.
She screamed in surprise, whirling around to face him.
“What the hell do you think you're doing? This is the girls washroom, no dicks allowed!” She felt her blood boil at the sight of his crooked grin. She was pissed at herself for letting him get the jump on her. Usually her senses were sharper then that, making it difficult for anyone to sneak up on her, but Kel wasn't anyone.
“We need to talk,” he insisted, the smirk falling from his face.
“I have nothing to say to you,” she scoffed stubbornly, attempting to move past him. His hand shot out, landing on her stomach and pushing her back against the sink, but not hard enough to hurt her.
“Then just listen.”
She released a terse laugh. “I don't have to listen to a god damn thing you say.”
“I really don't see how you have a choice in the matter,” he titled his head, daring her to tell him otherwise.
Mia looked away, but remained silent. “Fine,” she uttered shifting her gaze back to him. “Talk.”
“I'm gonna be straight with you because keeping you in the dark isn't doing me any good,” he began. “What you did back there, creating a telepathic link to my mind, is something you shouldn't be able to do.”
She rolled her eyes. “Yeah, I think we already established that genius.”
“You're not hearing me,” he took a step forward, causing her to tense and press herself against the sink. “You see, my mind is a very powerful thing. Humans can only use 10% of their brain power, whereas you demons can use about 20-30%. But Chase and I can use all of it. This is why our mind abilities are as powerful as they are.”
Mia's eyes widened in shock, but remained silent for him to continue.
“That being said, there are only three people in existence who are capable of breaking into my mind without permission, all of whom I happen to share DNA with.”
“But then how did I—”
“That's the million dollar question, isn't it?” he interrupted moving in closer to her, leaning both arms against the sink on either side of her. Mia visibly gulped, now trapped between his body and the sink.
“You and your little witch friend seem to be the exception to many of our rules and we can't seem to figure out why?”
“And you think I know something?” she asked her voice barely above a whisper. His proximity was making her far more nervous then she was willing to admit. If this had happened a few days ago, she would have gladly welcomed his new found attention. But this was different, he was different. She couldn't understand why she felt so nervous around him, maybe it had something to do with the predatory look in his eyes or the serial killer undertone in his voice. It was almost like he woke up this morning with Hannibal Lector's personality.
“To bad he doesn't sleep…” But that wasn't it. No, he was purposely trying to intimidate her, but why?
“No, I don't think you know anything,” he drawled slowly, his face now an inch away from hers. “First, my powers don't work on you and now you have access to my mind. All of which leaves me wondering what it is about you that's so…special?”
“Kel, I—”
“Then there's the fact that you infuriate and intrigue me at the same time. In all honesty, I can't stop thinking about you.”
The air in the room felt thick, almost stifling. His confession left her stunned. She opened and closed her mouth several times, but no words came out. What was she supposed to say? She's been trying for weeks to get Kel to notice her, to like her, and now here he was admitting the very words she's been longing to hear.
“But…what you said at the party—”
“I lied,” he admitted evenly. Mia stared at him unblinkingly, once again at a loss for words. Where was all this coming from?
“I feel like you should know what's going on,” he continued his voice low with a deadly calm that scared her a little. She was use to Kel's seriousness, but not to this extent. “You should know you have a strong effect on me, which you can choose to interpret however you like. Its part of the reason I've been so hostile towards you because I don't want you to have that kind of control over me, but you do. It took me a while, but I finally realized that I have to stop fighting you.”
“W-what does that mean?” she asked her breath hitching. He was so close she could feel the heat radiating off his body, engulfing her.
A smile tugged his lips briefly before disappearing. “It means… from now on I'm going to act on every single instinct I get towards you, good or bad. Maybe if I start accepting whatever it is that's happening to me, the meaning behind it will become clear. So I decided to give you fair warning since…”
He trailed off, allowing one arm to snake around her waist, jerking her flush against his body. Mia gasped as his lips came within an inch of hers. “My impulses can be…strong at times.” The meaning behind his words stirred an ache between her legs, the pooling moisture dampen her panties.
The smirk on his face told her he could already smell her arousal. She didn't know what to make of this side of him; it was overwhelming to say the least.
Mia released a shaky breath. “What is… your instinct telling you to do now?”
She watched as his ocean blue eyes glazed over with lust before closing the gap between them, crushing his lips to hers. She gasped, allowing his tongue to slip into her mouth. She moaned as he deepened the kiss, wrapping her arms around his neck. His hand gripped her ass, hiking her up onto the sink and positioning himself between her legs. The kiss wasn't like their previous one. Instead of being rough and dominating, it was slow and sensual. He took the time to carefully explore the canvas of her mouth as if engraving every detail into his memory. She wrapped her legs around his waist, wanting him closer. Kel groaned into her mouth when he felt his hardened cock grind against her dampen core.
Thank god I wore a skirt today…” She thought to herself. Kel smiled against her lips, indicating he could still hear her thoughts. She pulled away slightly from the kiss, their lips still touching.
“Will this thing ever shut off,” she pouted,
Kel chuckled softly, his hands caressing her inner thighs. “I'll teach you how, don't worry.”
Mia smirked, cupping both sides of his face as she brought his lips back down to hers. “I think I can get use to your instincts…”
“Hmm, you say that now,” he replied between kisses. “But, I'm not done talking to you yet.” She frowned, pulling back to look at him.
“What else is there?” she arched a delicate brow.
“Me and Chase have decided on a solution to the balance shift in this world,” he said, his arms still wrapped around her.
“Great, what is it?”
“All demons and supernatural entities will be separated from the humans and transported to another world. The humans in this world will forget your existence and move on with their lives as if nothing happened,” he explained as if telling her the weather outside.
Mia stared disbelievingly at him, unable to believe what she just heard.
“You… you can't do that!” she yelled pushing him away to slide off the sink.
Kel rolled his eyes, tired of hearing that. “What's the big fucking deal, we're letting you all live, aren't we? You'll just be doing it somewhere else.”
“But we have a life here; you can't just take that away! Isn't there another way?” She asked, her eyes pleading.
Kel gazed down at her for a moment before replying. “No.”
“But Kai and the others—”
“Will do what we tell them too,” he snapped cutting her off, getting annoyed. “The decision has been made, Mia. I'm only telling you this so you can prepare your family. You have three months.”
Her eyes began to water with unleashed tears, crimson orbs glowing with rage. Then, without thinking, she slapped him hard across the face, the sound echoing off the walls.
Silence fell between them as the seconds ticked by. Mia felt a spark of fear as the realization of her actions dawned on her. Kel slowly turned his head, pools of blackness seeping into his ocean blue eyes before zoning in on her.
“For your sake, I'm gonna choose not to act on what my instincts are telling me to do to you right now,” he growled his voice menacing.
“You've got some balls, you know that?” she said with a terse laugh, ignoring his comment. “You think you can just have whatever you want, take whatever you want and to hell with everybody else.”
Kel continued to stare at her, his expression blank. Mia pushed back her fear knowing if he wanted her dead he would have done it already.
“You only want me when you feel like it, expecting me to simply go along with any and everything that comes out of your mouth,” she continued. “Well guess what? You may be king fucking Tut in your world, but here you're just an inconsiderate asshole who has no problem with turning everyone's lives upside down whenever you see fit.”
“It isn't my job to coddle you,” he spoke his voice calm despite his eerie black gaze. “I thought you would appreciate my honesty.”
Mia's jaw dropped. “Are you fucking kidding me? What part of me and everyone I love being ripped from our home and thrown into some foreign world am I suppose to appreciate?!”
“You're being childish.” He deadpanned. “This is bigger then you know.”
“I don't care!” she growled. “You could have handled it better. Regardless of what you and your brother think, we're just like you. We bleed the same color blood, we have family and friends we love and would die for just like you would die for Chase. How would you feel if you were in our position?”
Kel moved closer, grabbing her chin between two fingers before lifting her gaze to meet his.
“Whether we hold your hands and sing kumbaya isn't going to change anything. At the end of the three months, you'll all be living a new life which is better then none at all. You should be thanking me.”
Mia gazed intensely into his cold, empty black eyes, watching as they slowly returned to normal.
“Thank you,” she spat scornfully before wrenching her face out of his grasp and yanking open the washroom door.
“Don't talk to me for the rest of the day,” she tossed over her shoulder as the door closed behind her.
Kel's P.O.V
This is why he rarely got involved with women, they were more trouble then they were fucking worth.
“Who said she wasn't worth it?”
Kel growled in frustration, shaking the thought from his head. What the hell did the bitch want from him? He was honest with her about his feelings, which was difficult enough considering he was never one to get emotional. She should be grateful he told her the truth instead of keeping her in the dark.
Still, this didn't change anything. He still intended to act on his instincts when around her, maybe then they can put an end to this nonsense…
Kel ran a hand threw his spiky red hair. Several emotions, none his own, surged through his body, leaving him exhausted. Everything from anger, sadness, lust, hate, love and betrayal washed over him all at once. Mia couldn't control the link she created to his mind, leaving it open and unknowingly sharing her emotions with him.
“I'm getting too old for this shit…” he grumbled pinching the bridge of his nose as he vanished from the room.
