Chapter 1
My name is Ayaka Hatsumo. I am seventeen years old, I live with my eight year old brother Kisho in Chibi, Japan. About four years ago our parents disappeared.
It was a beautiful fall evening. Bright orange and yellow sky complementing the fall colored trees. Kisho was walking with me jumping in every leaf pile in his path, numerous leaves stuck to his head. School just got out and I had to wan Kisho home before I could go to my friend's house. When I got home I knew some thing just wasn't right. I walked up the large stone path, stopping at the stairs. Kisho was being obnoxious, and annoying so I turned around and yelled “Kisho! Behave before father hears you being a dork!” I turned back and walked up the three small stairs, stopping at the large sliding drawers. It was to quiet.
I took in a deep breath and opened the door. Nothing. There was no furniture, no scrolls or fans displayed on the wall. No geta in the doorway, absolutely nothing. I had seen them in the morning and now there was nothing there.
I walked around a little bit and found nothing still. Then I looked in my room. Only my calligraphy brushes, ink, and some paper remained. Kisho looked in his room just to find his Shamisan, and noting more. They didn't even leave a note or some yen.
It has been so long scène I have had a decent meal, a warm bed to sleep in, or even a bath. Any yen that I earn usually goes to Kisho for food. All that I get is a little bit of bread or rice. Just enough food to keep me alive. I earn a little yen for each scroll that I paint and sell.
Kisho earns a little bit more than I do. About once or twice a week he will perform at some place like a bar. He plays his Shamisan and earns a little bit of yen for us.
No one will adopt us or even just give us a job. We sleep in small alleyways between buildings, or if it rains we find a roof to sit under. I wish that I was able to send Kisho to school. Maybe then he could do something for himself. But by now, I think the only way that I could make it by myself would be to get married. But I have to try my hardest and take care of Kisho for now. There is nothing that I can do.
