Portentous Milestones
Tegan ran into the school building holding her folder tight to her chest lest it fell and slowed her down, anxiously looking at her watch. The strap of her bag slipped down her shoulder and she yanked it back into place, her annoyance showing on her pretty face. She couldn't be doing with this. If she was late she would be grounded, and considering it was her birthday it was the last thing that she wanted. Pushing on with and extra turn of speed she powered down the corridor, nearly flattening the Headmistress.
“No running in the corridors!” Came the shout from behind her.
Tegan ignored her and skidded round the corner leaving the Headmistress to frown at the slim brunette. She dived through the classroom door closing it behind her, the bell ringing just after it clicked shut. Tegan grinned feeling relief wash over her. Her teacher on the other hand looked at her disapprovingly.
“Cutting it a bit fine aren't we Miss Weston?” He asked sharply.
Tegan smiled as she caught her breath and hurried to her seat, brushing her long curls behind her ear. She looked up as she passed Michael's desk. He smiled at her in that way that gave her butterflies in her stomach and lifted her spirits. They had been together for a year now and seemed meant for each other - well according to all their friends and she certainly wasn't going to argue. As she approached her place at the back of the class Stephanie had already pulled out her chair for her. She sat quickly putting her folder and her books on the desk before her.
“Happy birthday sleepyhead!” Steph whispered.
“Thanks!” She grinned back. “What's the plan?”
“Quiet at the back!” Mr Stevens barked. “Now as you know I asked you to read the first two acts of Richard the Third over the weekend.”
The class groaned in unison making Tegan smile. She did not share their distaste, and besides she was in too good a mood to care.
“There is also the matter of the end of term assignment on Austen.”
“Oh god!” Steph whispered. “It's half done on my desk at home!”
“All those who do not hand it in now will face detention this evening.” He continued, rising from his place and began to collect the aforementioned assignments.
At that Tegan felt a twinge of sudden anxiety in the pit of her stomach. She had completed the essay a week ago but finding it could be a problem. She started to rummage in her bag to no avail, and as he approached the back of the class she started to panic. As he approached Steph she suddenly remembered her folder.
“Stephanie?” Mr Steven's tone was condescending and he sneered slightly as the girl hung her head in response. “Detention till five this evening then, you can ring your parents at break time. Tegan?”
She flicked to the back of her folder quickly smiling as she saw the six-page essay. She removed it quickly handing it to him. He looked a little surprised, and she thought she caught a faint smile, but he headed back to the front of the class and wrote the title “Richard the Third” on the board. She breathed a sigh of relief inwardly, closing her eyes and thanked her lucky stars for having the foresight to have planned ahead. A rare moment of genius it seemed. The class now sat in silence, Tegan running her fingers over her hardback copy of the play, loving the feel of it under her fingers. She looked across at Michael, the two smiling at each other.
“I'll see you at break.” He mouthed.
The class jumped as Mr Stevens slammed his hands on his desk at the front of the class.
“Miss Weston, when you and Mr Hardy have kindly finished playing at Romeo and Juliet, prove to me that you have done the required reading at home.”
Tegan fumed inside, her temper almost getting the better of her. Her temper was one of her biggest faults. She took a deep breath, determined not to be humiliated. She stood sharply.
“The tragedy of Richard the Third is one of the most well known and best of Shakespeare's historical works. It begins with Richard, Duke of Gloucester speaking in solo, acting as a chorus and…”
“That will be sufficient Tegan.” Mr Stevens said sharply. “Please sit. Now after that introduction we shall go on.”

The rest of the lesson passed without incident and soon enough the bell rang for break time.
“That is all for today.” Mr Stevens shouted over the sound of his students packing away their things. “I want you all to read the next three scenes and prepare detailed notes for discussion on Friday. If, and I mean if, we finish quickly I may allow you to go home for the holidays early. Those of you in detention I will see you at the end of the day.”
His pronouncement was met with mixed reactions, the students clearing out quickly from the room. Tegan was glad the lesson was over as Mr Stevens had a tendency to make the lessons quite dry and could be quite moody, but had enjoyed making her teacher back down. She was actually quite pleased with herself for that. She took a while packing away her things, looking up surprised as someone stood over her.
“It's a nice copy.” Mr Stevens said, looking at her hardback Richard the Third and smiling gently.
She smiled at him. “Yes it is.” She relaxed, he was obviously in one of his better moods.
“Someone told me that it is your birthday, eighteen at last.” He stated with a slight smile. “I thought you might like this, not really my thing at home.”
He handed her a slim book, Tegan's eyes widening in surprise. It was an old leather bound copy of Shakespeare's sonnets.
“For all your mooning at Mr Hardy you are my best student, and I do look forward to reading your essay. I wonder what insights you have for me. I know you love your books, and besides, you can practise the poems on Mr Hardy.”
With that he grinned and turned away.
“Thank you!” She called back to him, making him turn to her.
“Just do me a favour, and try to make it to class on time.” He replied as he settled back at his desk, and began to prepare for his next class.
She nodded, slipping the book into her bag, rushing out of the classroom. She stopped at her locker smiling to herself. Mr Stevens was not half as stuffy as he made out to be sometimes, but that is the nature of people, they hide behind a veil of assumed persona. Hmm, a pretty profound thought, definitely one worth remembering. She jumped as she felt hands sliding around her waist.
“Michael!” She grinned, throwing her arms around his neck happily.
“Happy birthday.” He said eagerly as her hugged her tightly.
She shut her locker and grabbed his hand, hearing him laugh as she pulled him towards the throng of people. She loved his laugh, it had such warmth. The two made their way out to the front steps where their friends were waiting, running most of the way as they knew they had a limited time before their next lesson.
“So what's the plan guys?” She asked as she sat down in the middle of the grouping.
“Well, the bitch of it is that it's a Wednesday.” Ellie replied smartly, popping gum.
“So?” Tegan replied cheekily, implying that this should not stop them.
“Well it means that we'll have your birthday party at mine on Friday. You will just have to wait till then. Do you think you can manage that?” Ellie grinned at her wolfishly.
Tegan laughed. “Of course, as long as my Uncle doesn't freak out on me.” She felt that it could be a distinct possibility. Her guardian was quite protective of her.
“He'll be fine.” Michael put in, soothing her concerns. “I've sorted that out. Oh and you'll be staying with me overnight, perhaps the whole weekend. My folks are away.”
Tegan grinned, kissing him firmly on the lips happily. It was the best news she could have possibly have had.
“Oh please!” David groaned. “Get a room!”
Tegan laughed, enjoying the feeling of warmth that had suffused her at Michael's declaration. She had made her mind up that nothing would spoil her mood. She was roused from the comforting feeling as the bell rang to warn that lessons would be starting in five minutes.
“I'll see you guys at lunch.” She told the others as she rose from her seat.
“Damn right!” Steph shouted as she headed off to her next class.
Tegan smiled, kissed Michael quickly and ran herself. She didn't want to be late.

Friday came quickly, Tegan getting ready eagerly for the evening ahead. She was filled with excitement, an effervescence that felt like bubbles inside of her. Like any teenager she loved a party, but it was the prospect of a night, perhaps the weekend alone with Michael that really stirred her heart. He was her first lover, and the chance to… well… make love, without being disturbed didn't come very often. Now it was the Christmas holidays she knew she would be spending a lot of time with him and the thought filled her heart with joy. She had packed her bag with clothes, changed her mind, unpacked it and repacked it, and was now preening, considering if she needed to change her clothing choice once more.
“Tegan, your taxi's here.” Came her aunt's call from downstairs.
“Coming.” She called back, grabbing her bag.
She took one last look at her reflection, rearranging her hair slightly, smiled, and headed downstairs. Lynn was waiting for her, and hugged her niece warmly.
“You look lovely sweetheart, but please be sensible. I know you can drink now, but please be safe.”
“Of course.” She soothed, spotting her Uncle coming from the kitchen.
She kissed Lynn on the cheek, then to Stuart's surprise ran over and hugged him. She kissed him quickly and was out of the door before anything could be said. He stood smiling shaking his head.
“I think you worry too much about her.” Lynn told her husband simply.
“Perhaps.”
“She's a good girl, well young woman now. She's sensible, intelligent and I don't think you give her enough credit.”
“I can't help but worry though. It's not so much what she does that worries me, but outside dangers. You know what I am talking about.”
Lynn nodded sadly. “Let's hope for the best. In a few months she may be off to university if all goes well in her exams. Then with any luck she will be far away and safe.”
“We can only hope.”

Towards the end of the night Tegan could be found sat on Michael's lap laughing. They were watching Ellie, who was currently dancing drunkenly on her dining room table. It had been a dare by someone, for some reason Tegan hadn't managed to catch. She had survived the party games herself with only a minor humiliation, and Michael was there to spare her blushes. Ellie on the other hand had managed to end up with lots of drink related forfeits that had attributed to her current state. To tell the truth they had all drunk a fair amount, though she and Michael seemed to be faring better than most at the moment.
A few minutes ago she had murmured into her lovers ear about slipping away from one pleasurable activity to be able to do another, giggling at the sudden flash of lust in his eyes. He had run off quickly to phone for a taxi and locate their things. Now they sat on the stairs by the front door with a great view of the dining room and the kitchen. They only just managed to hear the doorbell over the loud music, and Tegan found herself wondering if Ellie might be getting a few reprimands from the neighbours in the morning.
The two had then jumped into the taxi laughing. It was by now very late. She spared a thought for the revellers they had left behind, and the scene of wreckage they would wake up to in the morning. She felt a little guilty about leaving them to it, so decided to call in the morning and see if she could help clear up. For now she was determined not to think about anything else but Michael. Speaking of which, Tegan curled up into his shoulder sighing contentedly.
“I've got something for you.” He murmured into her hair.
“Really?” She smirked, sitting up.
He looked into her deep blue eyes lovingly. “It's your birthday present; I wanted to save it till tonight. I wanted it to be special.”
Her eyes widened, suddenly remembering that he had not given her his gift on the day in question, though she had thought little of it at the time. He had warned her a week before that he planned to save it for the celebrations. She turned to face him smiling; it was so like him to surprise her when they were on their own like this. He liked to keep moments like this intimate. He pulled out a small box from his pocket, wrapped in gold paper and ribbons.
“I'm guessing you didn't wrap this, a little too girly for you.” She smirked at him cheekily.
“I got mum to do it.” He conceded, looking a little sheepish.
He watched her intently as she unwrapped it, and she enjoyed him watching her like this. She pulled back the paper discovering what was evidently a box containing jewellery of some sort. She looked him in the eye as she smiled for him, before turning back to her gift. She opened it catching her breath when she saw the contents. There lay a simple diamond pendant on a white gold chain.
“It's beautiful!” She breathed, running her fingers over it, almost disbelieving what she saw.
“I've been saving up. You are only eighteen once, and I love you.” He replied with genuine affection.
“I know.” She smiled warmly. “I love you too.” She kissed him tenderly.
She purred as he kissed her back, his tongue sliding past her lips to meet hers, pulling her into his arms. The two teens pressed into each other, deepening the kiss, their embrace becoming more passionate. She pulled back smiling before they could get too excited.
“I think we had best wait till we get to yours.” She murmured huskily.
He grinned at her, loving the tone of voice she had used, one that had been laden with promise for later. They reached their destination soon enough, Michael picking up her bag as they left the taxi, paying the fare. He unlocked the door and pulled her inside hurriedly, making her laugh, backing her into a table. He kissed her softly, need in his eyes. Knowing that they were going to be alone and uninterrupted was a powerful aphrodisiac. Tegan felt herself flushing as she felt the desire well up in her. He stepped back, stroking her face momentarily.
“Come on, I want to see the necklace on you.” He stated, wanting to prolong things for a bit.
She nodded smiling, and allowed him to lead her into the living room. They went hand in hand as they walked to the sofa. She sat with her back to him, lifting her hair away from her neck. He took off the necklace she was wearing, before gently replacing it with his gift. He ran his hand over the smooth flesh of her shoulders, before encouraging her hands from her hair. She turned to him, looking down at the pendant.
“Perfect,” He said smiling. “It suits you, I knew it would.” He smiled that smile which she so loved, the one that lit up his face and stirred her heart.
“Did you pick it out yourself?” She asked cheekily, half suspecting the answer, but not minding in any case.
“Well. I did have some help.” He replied, now looking at the floor with slight embarrassment. “I took my sister, she knows more about this kind of thing.”
Tegan laughed, she and Cassie got on well when she was around, despite the other girl being significantly older than her.
“I didn't have a clue what to go for to be honest. I just wanted something special for you.”
“Its beautiful and I will have to say thanks to Cassie when I see her.” She replied soothingly.
She had enjoyed this gentle tease, but she did not intend to ruffle any feathers. With that she wrapped her arms round his waist, snuggling into his shoulder. He smiled, he didn't quite understand how she made him feel, but he loved it all the same. He ran his fingers through her hair, Tegan sighing happily. He lifted her face to his and brought them together, kissing her softly at first. After a moment hesitation their lips parted and their tongues met in a slow dance that awoke more than their emotions.
His hand slid to her head, his fingers entwining in the long, curled tresses, while she slid a hand under his T-shirt to feel the smooth flesh of his stomach. They revelled in the sensation, the feeling of closeness. They had been waiting for this all night. They clung to each other as they embraced, their kisses growing more and more passionate. Tegan moaned softly as he pulled her hard against him, the two feeling their need for each other mounting. When they managed to pull away from each other they were both breathing hard.
“I think we had best go upstairs.” She murmured softly, looking at him with heavy lidded eyes.
“A great idea.” He smiled, kissing her cheek softly.
With that he took her hand and led her upstairs, the two never once taking their eyes off each other. They closed the door and forgot about everything else except each other.
