Chapter Two
Twenty minutes later, and just a little past six, Davin was walking through his front door, clear-eyed and fresh smelling. He hung his jacket by the front door and made his way toward the voices of his parents. Looking at himself in the hall mirror, Davin smoothed down his black and green sweater but didn't bother tucking in his white t-shirt underneath that poked out over his hip. The flush was gone from his face but not the healthy glow. Mom would be pleased he looked happy and his dad would think nothing of his son's easy glide and carefree movements. He flashed a smile and a wink at his reflection; let them think he had a good day at school and not know he had just received amazing head from a girl whose name he didn't really care to remember.
He pushed through the swinging door to the kitchen and found his parents talking to the housekeeper. His mother raised her hand in a slight wave as she continued to check on the progress of the night's menu. Davin smiled to his dad as he rolled his eyes beside his wife and shook his head slowly before sneaking a raw green bean from the counter and began chewing the end with a bored sigh. They must be having something important going for his mother to be so adamant about one dish or another. He was getting bored but before the large yawn could make its way out of his mouth, he heard light footsteps thumping down the hall toward them. A smile came to his pretty face and he turned fast to catch a wriggling, giggling mass of dress-up clothes and bug wings.
“HEY LITTLE GIRL!” He said, making his voice a loud growl and laughed evilly at Lydia, his baby sister. The girl shrieked and giggled like a hamster from Hell as she gave her pink tight-clad legs a few feeble kicks before going limp. With one arm he slung her up so he had her propped on his hip and smiled at her glittery, lipstick tinged face.
“Hi, Davs! I came for you, and a Mondo, and a Dunk-a-roo.” She was positively hyped up on crack! Well, perhaps just a cupcake worth of sugar and the natural highness of a five-year-old, he corrected himself. She mashed her baby-chub face against his and wrapped her small arms around his neck; this was the greeting he always got from her. He inhaled and smiled when he smelled her scent of apple juice and crayons. When she pulled away he saw her make-up was smudged and he knew he now had half a face covered with red rouge and silver glitter.
“As you wish. Go get what you want and go to my room, I'll be there in a minute.” He said and laughed as she slid down him and scampered to the refrigerator. Before he went about getting his own snack, he went over to his mom and kissed her on the cheek.
“Hey, dear, how was your day? TGIF.” His mother said as she redirected her kiss from the side Lydia had already marked to his other cheek.
“Oh, just grand. I'm so glad it's the weekend, I needed a break badly.” His mom pouted and patted him on the shoulder. He didn't feel bad about lying; little lies like three-day weekends weren't worth dwelling on.
“And how did your test go today?” His father asked. Davin cringed inwardly, his dad always managed to get this information out of him and then he'd have to deal with his grilling later on.
“Oh, I think I did ok.” He said, busying himself with the carton of orange juice and a glass.
“How do you think your semester grades will be?” He continued with his questions.
“All should be passing.” Screw food, I'll come back for it later. “Well, you two have fun tonight. If some catastrophe occurs, you know where we'll be.” Davin added before his dad could press on and made his way to the safety of his bedroom.
Two and a half hours later, Davin was on the floor in front of his TV with Liddy passed out on a pillow beside him. He smiled as little snores came from her gaping mouth; no longer responsive to the movie she was watching earlier. He looked up and scowled at the screen. Some gigantic monkey with an annoyingly cute voice was hopping around and singing as a man told fairy tales. What the hell is this? The thought came into his head as he realized he was watching it closer than he should have been. He had picked up the movie case and was reading the back of it when his stomach grumbled. It was nearing nine o'clock and he had only stolen a few of his sister's micro-sized, frosted animal crackers since he had gotten home. As he rose, he saw himself in the mirror and pondered whether or not he should change his clothes. Looking at himself in his jeans and white tank top he decided against it. Whoever had come over for dinner should be gone by now and besides, he was home and he didn't have to impress anyone.
Stealing one last glance at the lump on the floor verified that she was out cold and wouldn't be waking up soon, Davin left his warm room in search of edibles. He yawned on his way to the kitchen and he heard quiet laughter from the living room. Great, they're at the coffee and dessert part of the night. I wonder what dessert is. His thoughts died after that and another rumble from his tummy sounded loud in the uber clean kitchen. A scowl darkened his features when the voices from the other room began to get louder.
“That must be him that just went into the kitchen.” His mom said and sounded way too pleasant for her not to be talking to whoever was their guest.
“Good thing we caught him while coming out of his room for food.” That was his dad. Yeah that's right. Damn it, they're going to prolong my feeding frenzy! The door swung opened and in came his mother and father, dressed to impress and smiling at their son.
“Hey Davs, someone wants to say `hello' to you?” His mom said and he wished he had stayed put with the sleeping kid upstairs. What did a new old fart that they brought into his dad's law business want by saying hello?
“Hello, Davin. Long time no see, huh?” A young voice said kindly from the doorway. Davin looked up and studied the face for a moment until finally a name drifted from his memory.
“Luke?”
“Isn't that something?” His father said smiling at the young man in the expensive suit and patted him on the shoulder. “He's going to be part of my firm starting Monday.”
“You're a lawyer?” Davin asked, ignoring his parents almost completely and all thoughts of cold chicken were pushed out of his mind as he and Luke looked at each other.
“Yes, just finished with the hard stuff a few months ago.” He said and shared a laugh with Davin's father.
“Well, while you two play `catch-up', I think we'll return to the living room.” His mom said and came forward to kiss her son on the cheek knowing she would be in bed long before he passed out in his room for the night. After they were alone, Luke relaxed visibly and came into the room to lean against the spotless counter.
“It's good to see you.” Davin offered to the growing silence between them.
“It's been a long time.” Luke said and smiled as his long shiny black hair fell over his bright green eyes.
“How old are you anyway? You definitely outgrew your nerdy twelve-year old self. You still obsess over D&D?” Luke said and his smile was border lining teasing. Davin laughed,
“Shut up. I'm seventeen, which makes you what? Thirty?” Oh this was a wonderful reunion.
“I see you're still a little bastard underneath all the cuteness.” Luke said and shook his head knowing that Davin already did the math on his twenty-five years. Luke pushed himself away from his support and stood slouched and at ease for a second before straightening and looked at his watch. “Well, this has been a long night; it's a shame everything interesting happened at the end. I need to get going.” Davin nodded and watched his old friend head back to the door. “See you around, Davin.”
The silence began to gnaw on his nerves so he quickly grabbed a random dish of leftovers from the refrigerator and went on his merry way. As he was passing by the living room, he heard his parent's voices were quieter and on impulse slowed so he could hear since they only talked like this when they were being secretive.
“He's still so charming, isn't he?” His mother asked and rubbed the back of her neck as they sat together on the overstuffed loveseat.
“Yes, he's the perfect lawyer.” His dad said and they both laughed while Davin rolled his eyes. Boring.
“So, if what you heard is true-“
“I'm not going to bother about it, Erica. He's smart, was one of the brightest of his class, and I got him to work for me before anyone else. I really don't care if he's gay.” Wait, what? His mother looked at her husband and smiled and patted his arm.
“Good, that's what I wanted to hear.”
Davin stepped away from the doorway and climbed the stairs, leaving the two to further discussion or bed he didn't know and didn't care. The giant, brain dead monkey was still dancing around, sans fairy tale guy, and Liddy was still sleeping although sprawled on her stomach and drooling into his carpet. All was still right with the world. Davin sat back down on the floor and hit the remote so whatever DVD was in would play instead of the shit that was coming from the VCR. He eased into his beanbag chair and brought some of the broccoli and rice casserole to his dry mouth. As the movie began, his thoughts finally turned to what he had tried to push away since he heard. Luke's gay?
