Chapter Three
“So, this guy, Luke, you hung out with him when you were younger?” Alex asked and Davin only nodded as he took a drink from his glass of soda. “And then he went to college, you never seen him again, now he's working for your dad, and he's gay?”
“You know, you're very annoying when you parrot me like that and I don't know if he's gay, they said it was a rumor.” Davin yawned, it was still early but he was glad his friend stopped by. He hadn't made any plans for his Saturday and would have died of boredom eventually.
“Wow.”
“It's not that big of a deal.” They both stood on Davin's words and made their way to the kitchen for some food.
“I'm not talking about the guy's preferences, I was just thinking about the situation as a whole.” Davin started getting ingredients for a sandwich out onto the counter and looked up to see what he could fix his friend.
Alex shrugged and shook his shaggy head, “I don't want anything, I'm taking Becky out in a few hours. Man, that girl!” Davin breathed a small laugh, he knew those two liked each other more than just one night of making out would suffice. “Oh hey, before I forget, I brought you a gift.”
Davin looked up from the slice of bread he had been spreading mustard on and saw Alex hold up his fist. He opened it slowly and gave him a bright, perfect smile as a small zip lock bag unraveled from his ringed fingers. Four long, shiny red pills gathered at one corner of the baggie and Davin smiled while snatching it from the outstretched hand.
“Darling, you shouldn't have. But I didn't think to get you anything.”
“Remember to start out just taking half of one. That ought to get you nice and out of it for nighty-night time.” Alex said and took his sunglasses out of his pocket of his jeans. “Well, I'm off.” Davin nodded and walked out to the living room with him. They were saying their goodbyes and Alex was opening the door when he stopped himself from running into the man who was reaching out to ring the bell.
“Oh hey, sorry about that.” Alex said and stepped back to let the visitor inside. Davin looked surprised for a second but then came back to himself.
“Hey, Luke, what's up?” Luke bent down to retrieve a large, lidded cardboard box he had set down and came back up with it in his arms.
“Your dad is going to be working very late so I'm the one who has to come here and file, newbie and all.” Luke smiled slightly and looked to Davin to let him in. Alex took in Luke's appearance for a moment while the older man was busy balancing the box and looking at his best friend. He gave Davin a strange, amused smile.
“Well, I'm off. Can't keep my goddess waiting too long can I? I'll call you later.” Davin said goodbye but he didn't miss that last look and reminded himself to ask him about it later.
“Where's your dad's office?” Luke asked, now just in his black slacks and silk, navy blue shirt, turned once again heaving the files toward the stairs.
“Do you remember where my bedroom is?” Davin asked.
“Yes.” Davin tensed at the smile on Luke's handsome face, remembering what he had overheard the night before.
“Two doors down and to the right.” He said quickly before disappearing into the kitchen. Luke watched the retreating figure with confusion before shaking it off and heading upstairs for the mind-numbing task at hand.
Not only did he have to put away these new files but he also had to throw out all the things Martin had no use of any more at his home office. Luke opened the box and took out the notepad from the top. At the office, he had written everything down that he was supposed to find and shred along with some files on the computer he was to delete. It was boring and should have been done by a secretary or Martin himself but like he said, he was the new guy and Davin's father was swamped with this new case. Besides, this gave him a chance to talk to his old friend again. Luke smiled to himself; yes it certainly had been a long time. As if the devil was answering his prayers, Davin came in after a few hours to the warmly lit, richly furnished office.
“Hello, Davin.” He said without turning around and slipping a yellow folder back in place in the tray on the desk. Luke turned and watched his young friend as he wandered around the room for a moment. Davin was being quiet and it was obvious to him that his mind was somewhere else.
“Hey.” Came the late reply. He didn't know what to do with himself. One minute he was standing with his arms crossed and the next he was leaning against a bookshelf. “Need any help?” He finally ventured to ask.
“No, I've got this. I wouldn't make you do this kind of thing on a Saturday.” Luke smiled and walked across the room to him to pull something out of the shelf beside him. Davin drew away not at all casually and Luke noticed the way his body seemed to be in a debate about whether or not he should continue moving or going back to where he was. “Are you ok?” He asked and remained near Davin.
Luke studied his face and saw how his eyes wouldn't meet his. In fact, they looked everywhere but at him. Davin swallowed and shrugged.
“Yeah, I'm fine.” He couldn't help the small blush rise under the stare of those eyes and he tried his best to be nonchalant. But Luke had seen this body language before; he got it all the time. Besides, he was a master at reading people; which was why he was already so good at his job. He never made it a secret to those who asked about his preferences but he never openly talked about it with everyone he met. He had a feeling Martin knew but he didn't think he would have told Davin. Well, this is going to be interesting. He thought and gave Davin an almost smirk before stepping back to lean on the desk.
“How'd you find out I'm gay?” Luke asked and it rendered Davin dumb for a moment to have this conversation started with such a question spoken so casually. But looking at the man, Davin saw his old friend still, albeit broader and more stylish and so he was comfortable even though he was a little embarrassed.
“They said it was just a rumor.” He said and gave him a small smile.
“Your parents told you then?”
“No, they were talking and I overheard.” Silence took over the room until Luke finally asked what he wanted to know most of all.
“Does it bother you?”
“No, not at all.” Davin felt his face heat up again at the look Luke was shooting his way. “I mean, I guess I was acting weird but it was because I didn't know for sure and I heard it from my parents of all people and I haven't seen you in so long.” He stopped his blabbering and held his breath as Luke just looked him over. Finally he shrugged and smiled at him.
“Good, that's very good to know.” and turned back around to start on his filing again. Davin was almost out of the room when he remembered why he was there in the first place, aside from seeing him again.
“I forgot to ask if you were getting hungry?” He said and turned in the doorway. A smile spread over Luke's smooth mouth as he heard the question and turned to look at him over his shoulder.
“Nothing I can't take care of later.” The pretty boy could take the statement however he wanted.
The day seemed to drag on endlessly for Davin after that. He was alone in the house, since Luke was being a silent and hard worker, and his mother wouldn't be home with Liddy until another hour. For the hundredth time he wondered what possessed him to decide to have a lazy Saturday. He itched for something to do that his video games or movies wouldn't slake. Fucking hell, what the hell do people with no social lives do all day? He asked to his blue washed ceiling as he leaned back in one of his most limber positions on his black velvet armchair. His arms fell over his head, which was almost touching his floor, as he leaned over one armrest and his feet buried themselves in his thick blue carpet. A groggy noise escaped his lips when his back gave a loud pop and he pulled himself back up when he felt his head was going to explode.
His arm shot out to his desk and grabbed one of his spiral notebooks from the crooked pile. Thumbing through the inky scribbles, he stopped a few pages before the blank ones began and reread a little of what he had written last. This latest book was filled with poems and short stories that all had very dark and very sexual themes, his current topics of choice. He had let Alex, one of his most valued readers and critics, sample some and he said he was constantly between getting hard and worried that these might be a cry for help. A click from his pen he stole from the doctor's office and his hand was moving against the paper once again. All thoughts of boredom, his family, friends, and Luke disappeared and before he knew it, another idea was down and safe between the red margins.
That's how it always was when he wrote. For a while he went away, not even conscious of his hand moving and when he came back there would be words spilled across whatever surface he was writing on at the time. And from what he gathered, his words were good. It wasn't that difficult for his skills to gain more and more perfection but he was still surprised sometimes since his mother only showed a slight enthusiasm for whatever he let her read and his dad showed no interest at all in writing in general unless it had to do with what he did. Davin put his book away and straightened his desk when he heard footsteps running to his room. His mom must be back. The door burst open and Liddy stood smiling with her bangs sticking straight up.
“Davs, mom says she wants to talk to you.” Davin nodded and stood. On his way out, he caught the retreating form of her and carried her limp, puffy dressed body under his arm and down to the living room. He kept from rolling his eyes when he heard a loud rupture of laughter from the den and went inside. His mother wasn't alone but stood gathering another coat with three other women waiting by the door. Her eyes lit up when he came into the room.
“Davs, sweetie, I'm going to be out late tonight. Drop Liddy off at Audrey's around two and she is going to stay the night since her birthday party is at her house anyway tomorrow. Your father's not coming home until at least after midnight. Oh, and I gave Sarah the weekend off so you're responsible for your own dinner. Have fun tonight, and you have my cell number if anything happens.”
“Right.” Davin said to the closing door. She was always doing this sort of thing to him. No please or thank you, just do and stay out of trouble. He pushed those thoughts away and looked at Lydia who was still hanging under his arm. “You're not having your party here?” He was met with a dumb grin and a tiny shrug of the shoulders.
