Chapter Four
Davin came back after dropping his sister off and from visiting a few friends and was relieved to see Luke's car was still in the driveway. He carried the bags of take-out and opened the door, glad that he was so good at multi-tasking. The whole downstairs was dark but he saw a shaft of light coming from underneath his father's closed office. He deposited the food in his room before going back down to retrieve some plates and silverware. Being a connoisseur of Chinese take-out, Davin was a pro with chopsticks but he always supplied forks just in case others weren't. When he settled everything in his room, he went and knocked on the door Luke was working behind. A muffled voice told him to enter and Davin smiled at the man who was stretching from behind the computer screen.
“How's it all coming along?” He asked and Luke closed his tired eyes as he answered.
“Just swell. I still have a few things to check and enter but I'm close to being done.”
“It's around 5:30 and I got some food, wanna take a break?” Luke smiled, the opportunity to spend time with him and continue their conversation from the night before was too tempting to pass up.
“Sure.”
Luke followed behind as he was led not down to the kitchen or dining room but to Davin's room. When he stepped inside he took in the space and welcomed the warm feeling of nostalgia that washed over him. It had been seven years since he had seen this place and it was changed drastically.
“It's a little scary to see such nice décor, although I'm glad your bed is no longer covered in ninja turtle blankets.” He said and Davin laughed as he sat down on the floor cross-legged and waved his hand to signal Luke to sit down too.
“I loved those sheets, damn it!” Davin said with fake conviction as he searched through the boxes of food before him.
The meal wasn't filled with silence like Davin had been afraid it would. Luke was just as talkative with him as he used to be and he was eager to know what he had been doing all these years. He told him about his writing and was thrilled he was interested but wouldn't let him read anything. Luke had pouted but he wouldn't budge, after all they had just been reacquainted and he didn't just let anyone, cute face or not, read his stuff. Yes, he noted the looks of his older friend and no, he wasn't shocked with himself. Davin wasn't the kind to not appreciate a fine form just because of gender. He in turn wanted to know what Luke had done since he moved away from him. The things he told him were interesting enough yet he kept a lot of details out, especially his college years but Davin didn't mind. Luke answered all questions thrown at him and only smiled when Davin showed high interest in the fact that he had an apartment in Sea Point, the very posh side of the inner city.
“You want anymore, you didn't get a lot and there's boxes left.” Davin asked and nodded toward his plate that had portions left from all things he had gotten and smiled inwardly at the fork laying in a pile of rice noodles.
“No, I'm good. I don't really eat Chinese food all that much.” Luke said, leaning back on his hands to let his full stomach settle.
“What? That's blasphemy I think.” Davin said, poking through some seafood mix with his oily chopsticks. Luke sat back up and took a battered piece of sweet and sour chicken off Davin's plate and folded it into a napkin.
“Do you see all the grease this has in it?” He asked a little too dramatic to be taken seriously as he squeezed and Davin could in fact see a wet looking stain pool out into the thin paper.
“I believe that's just run-of-the-mill, perfectly harmless flavor enhancer.” Davin replied and grabbed the abused piece of food from Luke and dipped it in the bright, syrupy sauce before shoving the whole piece in his mouth.
“Yuck.” Luke was using his flat, indifferent tone after watching him eat it with a look of orgasmic bliss, even after he had shown him the chemical sludge hidden inside. He brought his hand up to Davin's face and his finger wiped a drop of the red liquid from the center of his bottom lip and instead of wiping it on his napkin he licked it off. Davin shook his head and brought his slightly pinker face down to look at his plate and Luke smiled. The kid was too adorable for his own good and he was thankful that little move hadn't freaked him out. He's lucky I didn't lick it off his face. Wisely choosing not to entertain those thoughts, Luke stood with his glass.
“Well, I'm going to get back to work so I don't have any of this to do tomorrow.” He said and didn't hide the annoyance in his voice. Davin nodded and washed his food down with another swig of his drink. “Thanks for the dinner.”
“No problem.” Finally he spoke; Luke was worried for a moment. He was to the door when he added, “Hey, Luke, we should hang out again some time, I had fun.” He looked up at the man who smiled, his hair falling over his eyes before he swiped it back again.
“Definitely.”
* * * * *
It had been a month since their first hangout session and they had gotten together as often as they could. Sometimes Luke would take him out to eat or they would go to the movies but most often they found themselves at Davin's house with a pizza between the two and talking or playing video games and Davin was happy that Luke was very affectionate with Liddy since she adored him and he didn't mind when she hung out with them, even when she brought her video of the retarded monkey along.
Today was another Saturday and another he had nothing to do. He was talked into helping his dad out at his office, something he always regretted later in the day and wasn't surprised when the “help” needed by him was to answer phones until two when the new secretary got in. But he didn't show his annoyance and he didn't complain to his mom when she said he would have to catch a ride with someone else because she was going to get her hair and nails done and then have a girl's day out with her annoying friends. Since he had been hanging out with Luke, he let slip some things about his relationship with his mom and dad and Luke listened but also tried to mediate. In doing so, he gave Davin advice and he tried to make an effort to be more agreeable to his parents.
Davin switched from staring outside at the light snow falling to playing with the things on the desk he had been sitting at for the past hour and a half after he came back from lunch. He never liked the fact that his dad made it so that he worked on the weekends and knew this was why he was probably such a bastard when he was off. Shit, there goes my promise of happy thoughts for the day. Davin stopped himself from ruining his mood and instead concentrated on not falling asleep on the job. He had just finished with a phone call when Luke came in pulling his black coat off his chilled body. He seemed busy so Davin wrote down a few messages for the secretary to give to Martin while Luke disappeared into the office. Davin marked his place in his book when two boxes were placed on the desk and he looked up to find Luke smiling at him.
“Hey. Are you working here all day?” He asked and kept his sharp eyes on the boy.
“No, I'm off in about fifteen more minutes.” Davin said through a yawn and a stretch. Just then, Amber the wonder secretary came in and threw her cheetah print coat on the rack and immediately went about making coffee. The two men exchanged looks and Luke picked up his files and moved toward the door.
“I have more work to do at Martin's office. Need a ride?”
Before heading to his house, they decided to go ahead and grab a bite to eat. Davin directed him to a diner attached to a mini-mall strip and had to nudge his friend out of the car after he gave him a questioning look.
“Don't be an establishment snob, Luke, this place has good food, it's cheap, and hardly anyone comes here around this time.” Davin said as he walked across the parking lot, shielding his eyes from the wet snow trying to blind him and stick to his hair.
“Right. Coming from someone who still ate that piece of fat-drenched chicken after I had made such a good point, I'll decide for myself if the food's good, I'm paying so that reason has no validity to your argument, and well, I can't say anything against privacy.” he said and stepped through the door Davin held for him.
Luke scanned the area; it was absolutely empty. He smiled at this and with his hands shoved deep into his coat, he led the way to a table at the very back near a window. The place was clean; he'd give it that. Sitting down with his coat beside him, Luke shot a fake glare at Davin who laughed under his breath and mumbled what sounded like “snob” as he sat across from him. Within seconds a young girl came over to them and smiled as she recognized Davin and asked their order. Luke wanted a small salad along with a glass of water and Davin only asked for a slice of cherry pie with a scoop of pistachio ice cream on top. The older man noted the familiarity the waitress had with his friend.
“You come here a lot, don't you?” He asked as he looked around and smiled, noticing Christmassy decorations still hung from the ceiling and on the windows even though it was the end of January.
“Actually yes, I stop by here for lunch and sometimes after school whenever I can get by with skipping dinner with my parents.” Luke didn't press that last comment and nodded before they both fell into a comfortable silence.
The girl came back and Davin looked surprised at the mug of hot chocolate covered with whipped cream and chocolate shavings that he didn't order. She only winked and said it was for being a regular and a sweetheart. He automatically fell into habit and gave her his charming half-smile and nodded his thanks before she scampered off. Luke watched the whole thing with interest and he lifted his eyebrow in a silent question when their eyes met and Davin only smiled and shrugged while dipping his finger into the cream and licking it off. The food really wasn't bad Luke admitted to himself and continued to eat when he usually only had two bites to humor whoever he was eating out with. His eyes kept going back to the boy in front of him as he secretly watched him lift cherry after ice cream covered cherry to his pink mouth. It didn't go unnoticed that Davin kept looking at him as if to speak but then stopped every time. Obviously his little friend had something to say.
“You might as well spit it out. Whatever's on your mind.” Luke said after pushing his plate away and giving Davin his full attention.
“I want to talk—ask you a few things but I don't want you to get angry and I don't want to make you uncomfortable.” Davin said, not afraid at all of what he wanted to ask but afraid of setting their friendship back. Luke knew no one was around and he didn't know these people anyway. He would be working once they got back so now was as good a time as any to talk.
“You'll never know until you ask.” He said and leaned a little closer as if they were about to conspire something huge. “Shoot.”
“Ok, here it goes. But just so you know, this is out of curiosity and if you don't want to tell me, say so.” When Luke only waited for him to continue he went on. “Well, I've never had a gay friend before and…I'm…I was just wondering-”
“Is this a sex question, Davin?” He asked and Davin was relieved not only because his friend was so astute but also because he was smiling at him. “What do you want to know?”
“First things first, do you still sleep with women on occasion?”
“No, gender hopping isn't my thing.”
“When was the last time you was with a woman?” Davin asked him, still not able to let that idea go.
“When I was seventeen.”
“When did you first have a man?” Luke swallowed at that question but kept his emotions from showing.
“Eighteen, during college.”
“Really? That long ago.” Davin mused. “And you never went back?”
“Nope.” Luke shook his head slowly.
“Is it that different? The sex I mean.” Davin asked and again settled into his seat for a new line of questions.
“I think so, but that's not the whole reason for not going back.”
“Is it better?”
“I think so.” Luke again smiled. Davin sure had an unquenchable thirst for knowledge!
“Are you dominant all the time?”
“So you know enough to know about that?”
“I figure it can't be that much different. Besides, someone has to be top.” Davin said and turned his mug back and forth while waiting for his answer.
“I'm a top man myself.” Luke finally spoke.
“Have you ever been bottom?”
“Occasionally.”
“Why, is it uncomfortable?”
“No, well a little, but a lot of men prefer bottom. It's just my nature to take control is all.”
“Do you have a boyfriend right now, I never asked before. Wait, is that too personal?”
“No, it's fine and no I don't have anyone at the moment.” Luke laughed; of course Davin would think an actual question about his own, current relationships be too personal.
“Have you told your parents and family?”
“No.”
“Thank you for sitting through this.”
“No problem, are you satisfied?”
“At the moment, yes I think I am.” Davin said and Luke rose after putting a tip on the shiny tabletop.
“Good, ask me more if you want. Let's go.” He said and didn't wait for Davin as he walked up to the register.
