Chapter 1
I watched as you walked away that day. You had said, “I don't see anything that would make me love you.” I was about to cry. I didn't know what to say. I hadn't talked in four months so I had written you a note. But soon I did understand why you couldn't love me. I would not open up like everyone else. Then you said before you left, “I'm sorry, but could we just stay friends?” I shook my head. Then you walked one direction as I stood there then walked the other direction.
It has been five months since that day and I will never forget it. My heart had been broken for the first time.

Megan sat on the train as she heard those words again. She never liked to relive things. Megan was on her way to Garamond boarding school. It wasn't her first time either. She had been sent to about six different boarding schools for her bad behavior. She wouldn't talk, so usually they would get mad and send her to a new one so that the people there could take control of her.
She had memories of times like she just did it was strange. They always came at the wrong moments. Like when her father had abused her and was sent to trail the memory had come back to her and she had cried out loud screaming, “NO! Leave me alone! I don't want to remember!” And the judge and others had noticed her. The judge asked, “What is it my dear? Do you wish to share something?” Megan was only ten years old back then. She shook her head and ran out of the court room. She was afraid of that happening again. But it did. It had happened again about ten times already in the last 5 years. She had learned 3 years ago not to shout it. And soon she learned never to talk. That was nine months ago. Now she can control what she says, by not saying any thing.
This time when the memory came back it was her best friend Samantha that had said something. Samantha understood her. And knew why she couldn't talk, because she was with her back then in the court.
“Why did he have to break up with me?!” She almost yelled. “I mean yeah we could still have a long distance relationship and all, but no, he does not trust it!”
Megan gave her a look that said, “Don't be ridiculous okay, Sam.”
“I am not being ridiculous!” She yelled.
Megan again gave a look, but this time it said, “Stop yelling already.” They were nearing the station that was near Garamond boarding school. They would have to walk all the way down to the administration office to see what dorm they would be in.
As they got off the train Megan noticed something familiar it was a boy. His hair was pure black just like Megan's. She looked closer at the boy to see his face. As she looked her eyes widened with fright. It was Dylan her stepbrother. Dylan hated Megan and Megan hated Dylan. Two things that did not go so well together, in a house, at school, or even at a boarding school.
Megan and Samantha headed in the opposite direction that Dylan was going. They were at least heading in the right direction for the administration office, but Dylan wasn't he may have not been the brightest person she knew, but he should have a map. Megan didn't, but Samantha did.
As they neared the administration office Megan saw something that wasn't there. She was a little scared. It seemed like a ghost, but wasn't. Once she blinked it was gone just like that. Megan remembered reading that somewhere in a book. Then she remembered the title, The Giver. It was an interesting book, but one chapter had scared her a bit. And she never liked to remember it. She read a lot to pass the time. She usually had nothing better to do anyways. She had not talked in nine months so no one really knew what she liked to do.
Once in the administration office Megan and Samantha walked up to the front desk.
“Hello, my name is Samantha and this is my friend Megan.” Samantha said when the lady at the front desk had looked up at them.
“Yes, hello. My name is Ms. Liana. You may just call me Liana if you would like.” Liana said in a British accent. “You are both 15 years old am I right?” Samantha and Megan both nodded. Liana had a kind of England or British voice. And Samantha and Megan both seemed to like it. Megan smiled at Liana. Samantha did as well.
“Um...I'm sorry if I'm being rude at all, but I like your accent. Were you born in England?” Samantha asked.
Liana looked at both of them. “Yes actually and I do not mind I get that a lot.” She said with a lovely smile. “Well both of you will be in building O in room 260.” As she gave them the key Megan remembered something.
I remember you gave me a key to the house, but I lost it. You yelled at me when I had to knock. Mom might have been dead and gone, but you did not care. You enjoyed torturing me with all your might. And I tried to do my best not to disappoint you. But then you got a new wife with a new son. You forgot that I was your child to care for. You left me alone. I ran away a few times, because I hated you. But some how I always came back in your grasp. Some how you found me every where that I went. So matter how far I went you were there.
I will never forget feeling lonely. That was the first time I had ever felt hatred.
Megan looked at the keys horrified. Liana looked at Megan with confusion. Samantha notices the look and told Liana, “Sorry about that, I guess that the key reminds her of a memory that she had long ago.”
Liana gave Megan a small smile and said, “Its okay. You will be fine.”
Megan shook her head and looked at Samantha. “Fine I'll hold the keys.” Samantha said.
Samantha said good-bye to Liana as they left the administration office and Megan waved. They headed for building O. As they got nearer both of them noticed something unusual. There was one building labeled: OG and another one labeled: OB. Samantha and Megan then found out what it meant. OG stood for building O Girls dorm. And OB stood for building O Boys dorm. So they headed for building OG room 260. Both buildings had 9 floors. Samantha and Megan were on the 7th floor. On the door of their room it said, “Welcome to Garamond boarding school located in New Hampshire.” They entered the room and saw two beds.
“You take the bed by the window.” Samantha said. As she put her stuff on the bed nearest the door. And Megan went and put her stuff on the bed near the window. They each had a desk by their bed. A working desk for homework and a bedside desk for other stuff. There was a schedule on both of the work desks. It was their school schedule and all of the rules attached to them. Megan took them back to her bed as she read them. It was only 1:30 P.M. and everyone else was outside playing around, either getting to know people or hanging out with people they already know. Samantha moved around the room putting things up on her side of the room.

Thursday is like Monday and Friday is like Tuesday.
It was almost 2:00 now. It was time to go to the auditorium for the people that had just arrived. As Megan put on her shoes and waited for Samantha to follow Megan saw someone familiar. It was a girl. A girl from her neighborhood. The girl's name was Ella. She was a beautiful girl; she had long dirty blond hair and hazel eyes. She was walking out of her room. As she past Megan she smiled and waved. Samantha walked up behind Megan and said, “Come on let's get going.” And they both began to walk down to the auditorium.
Once in the auditorium they took a seat near the door. As they listened to the speaker most of the girls were giggling, because some of the guys had waved or smiled at them. Megan rolled her eyes. She didn't like it when someone did that. It distracted them too much and they would not pay any attention. But Megan had to ignore them to listen to the speaker. Once the speaker was done everyone began to talk to one another. Someone had called Megan's name. So she looked around and saw Ella, only two rows in front of her and Samantha, waving at them. They waved back at Ella. Megan had also noticed that Dylan had not yet noticed that she was there. She was glad about that much. If they got into a fight he would keep trying to make her talk, but he never got anything out of her.
Once Megan, Samantha, and everyone else had left the auditorium they headed for the cafeteria. It was almost time for dinner. Dinner was served at 5:00 and it was 4:51 right now. Once in the cafeteria Samantha and Megan sat farthest from everyone else. They got their food first of course. As they sat there eating Samantha kept going on about her ex. Megan just sat there listening well until a bunch of boys came by the table. There were about 3 or 4 of them. They looked to be about Samantha and Megan's age.
“May we sit here?” One of them asked. He had black hair that covered his ears.
“Sure why not.” Samantha said smiling then turned to Megan, “If it is okay with you anyways?” Megan nodded at her. And the boys sat down across from them.
One of the boys, with dirty blond hair, kept looking at Megan curiously. Megan looked up from her plate with a look that said, “Yes?” or “What is it you want?” to the boy. Samantha saw the look and said.
“She doesn't talk much. Oh yeah I almost forgot. How rude of me. I'm Samantha and the one here that doesn't talk is my good friend, Megan.” Samantha said.
“My name's John.” The one with dirty blond hair said.
“I'm Kevin.” A boy with black hair and red ends said.
“Tom,” The boy with black hair that covered his ears said.
“And I'm Lenny.” A boy with brown hair said.
“Well it's very nice to meet all of you,” Samantha said. “Right Megan?” Megan nodded.
“It's nice to meet the two of you as well.” John said.
They continued to talk for sometime, but then when they were done eating they had to go. Samantha and Megan put their trays up then were about to leave when Dylan appeared. He had a little smirk on his face. Megan looked down and tried to walk past him, but Dylan and his gang of boys stopped her.
“So what the last boarding school kicked you out?” He said in a mocking voice. Megan didn't answer she just continued to look down.
“Dylan just leave her alone.” Samantha said pushing past them grabbing Megan's wrist and dragging her back to their dorm. “Man he is the most annoying boy I have ever met.” She said once they were in their room. Megan nodded as she went over to her bed. She sat crisscrossed on there.
“Hey what's the matter?” Samantha said sitting next to Megan on the bed. Megan shook her head. “Come on you know me better than that.” Megan made a motion with her hands saying she needed paper. Samantha walked over to Megan's work desk to go grab a piece of paper. “Here.” She said as she gave Megan the paper. Megan began to write on the paper. It said:
Love doesn't give a thing. As in Dylan doesn't care about his step sister. If he doesn't care then I don't care about him. He is the most annoying boy I know too. But still… You know those other boys seem to like you more than me.
Samantha looked at the paper once Megan handed it to her. “Come on Megan. John seemed to like you.” She said. Megan shook her head. “Yes he did. Now stop being so stubborn!” Megan smiled.
Suddenly there was a knock at the door. “I'll get it.” Samantha said. When she went to go open the door. Megan stood up and looked out the window. She saw a full moon. It was so beautiful.
I remember when I first saw a full moon. You had told me stories of vampires and demons. You were my mother and I loved it when you told me scary stories at times and good stories about the full moon. I loved you so much, but you disappeared one day. At least that was what dad had said. But I knew the truth of what happened to you. You were murdered when you left the house that day. I did not want to lose you, but since that day on the full moon. I felt haunted, but I still loved the beauty of it. The full moon reminded me of your beauty and your stories.
Megan blinked. Samantha had answered the door already. At the door were Kevin and John.
“Oh hello.” Samantha said a little uncertain.
“Hi.” John said, “We were just seeing if you guys wanted to go down to the beach with us?”
“Of course we wouldn't mind.” Samantha said at once. “Right Megan?” Megan nodded and smiled. Before they left with Kevin and John, Megan grabbed a clip board with some paper on it. John noticed that she had a clip board. The moon was out and the beach looked beautiful. The four of us weren't the only ones out there Ella and her friend were out there and more students as well. It seemed like a Hawaiian picnic. Megan and Samantha both could not think of the word. They sat around a campfire. They told stories about their lives and got to know other people. Megan was glad that Dylan wasn't there to torture her. By the time it had ended it was almost Megan's turn but it was time to go in. So they all separated to their different buildings and dorms. Megan and Samantha went into theirs and fell asleep on their beds.
The next morning was a Sunday morning. Megan and Samantha went down to the student store or where ever they sold books. They went down there like everyone else to go get their school books for tomorrow. Megan had a few things to get, but Samantha had a pile. When they were on their way back to their room they heard something mean about them. Both of them turned around to see Amy the head cheerleader from their old home town. She was always the head cheerleader. “You that smart Sam? I thought that you were as dumb as a mule or a donkey.” She said. Samantha sneered and glared at her. “Oh and I hope that you don't get mad at me either Sam, but I'm dating your ex- boyfriend.” This time she smiled as Tony, Samantha's old boyfriend that had recently broken up with her, came out from behind a tree. At their old school Tony was the head football captain and the quarterback. He didn't seem to happy to see the two of them. He seemed a little guilty.
“Sam. I-“He began, but was cut off by Samantha.
“Don't call me that.” Samantha said almost crying. Megan could see that she was about to cry. Megan patted her back and gestured on going back to the building. Samantha nodded.
“Sam! Wait!” Tony called after them as they left. But they did not respond.
“Bye, bye Sammy.” Amy said waving her hand like she was saying good bye.
Samantha and Megan had made it up to their bed room. Samantha didn't say anything. She was too sad and mad to say anything. It seemed as though she was about to throw something at Megan so she hid behind her bed just incase.
“Megan you can come out.” Samantha said, “I'm sorry if I scared you.” She was about to cry. Megan moved closer to her and patted her on the back then she went and grabbed the clip board. She wrote on it. It took her about two minutes or so to finish up. It said:
Now you know why he told you he didn't want to be with you. And now he's here. Well you can find another boyfriend. Like John, Kevin, Lenny, or Tom. They seem to be more your types then mine anyways. And why wouldn't any boy not want to date you now? You're way too beautiful. Any guy would be crazy not to ask you out. Just forget about Tony for now. You never know what might happen.
She gave the note to Samantha. She smiled at her as she gave her the note. Samantha smiled as she read it. “Thank you.” She said giving Megan a hug. “You are a great friend. And that's why I'm glad we're here together.” Megan nodded at that.
It was almost lunch now. Samantha and Megan had just finished cleaning and organizing their room. It seemed perfect for tomorrow since they were about to start. And it got Tony off Samantha's mind. After they were done cleaning they headed down to the cafeteria for lunch. They sat were they had sat last night for dinner and wasn't really surprised to see Lenny, Kevin, Tom, and John sitting there. All four of them looked up when Samantha and Megan approached the table.
“Go on and sit down.” Kevin said gesturing to the two empty seats. Megan and Samantha both sat down. As they ate, Megan heard Amy's voice and Tony's voice, both of them, she could tell, were giggling at each other. Megan just shook her head and looked over at Samantha who seemed to be ignoring the two of them. Megan smiled, she was now happy that her best friend was over the guy. She also knew that sooner of later he was going to dump her for Amy or some other girl. They ate their lunch and the six of them headed down to the beach.
Down at the beach there were two girls waiting down there. One looked a lot like John and the other looked a lot like Lenny. Megan looked confused. The girl that looked like John looked in their direction. “John!” She yelled running towards him with open arms. Megan looked at John as his eyes widened. He seemed scared. He was about to turn around, but she got to him before he could turn.
“Jamie let go of me.” John said trying to get out of her hug. “Why are you here anyways?”
“Mom and dad sent me, bro.” Jamie said letting go of him and looked at him.
“Man do I hate having a twin.” John muttered as the rest of the guys were chuckling. Then the other girl who looked like Lenny came by. She was wearing a blue sweater and jeans.
“Hey Lenny.” She said coming closer to them.
“Hi, Mina.” Lenny said, waving to her. John had finally gotten away from Megan's grasp.
“Hey Mina.” All the other guys said all together.
“Who are they?” Jamie asked John looking confused at Samantha and Megan.
“Oh. These are some friends of ours. The one with black hair is Megan she doesn't talk much and the other one is Samantha.” John said introducing them. “Megan. Samantha. This is my 5 minute younger sister Jamie.” He said pointing to Jamie.
“And this is my 1 minute younger sister, Mina.” Lenny said pointing to Mina. Mina and Jamie both waved at Megan and Samantha.
“It's nice to meet the both of you.” Samantha said. Megan nodded. Jamie just tilted her head at Megan. Megan saw it and began to walk down the beach towards the water. Samantha saw that Megan was leaving the group. “Where are you going?” She yelled and ran after Megan.
“Jamie what did you do?” John asked walking after them.
“I didn't do anything. I just tilted my head in confusion.” She said following John. “Was that bad?”
“Well she won't be answering you.” John said seeing that Megan had just walked down to the water and not any further. And also saw that the other guys were behind him. Once they were down by the water they stood next to Megan. Megan stood there looking out to the ocean and took off her left shoe. She put her foot in the water and smiled. After a minute or so she took out her foot of the water and put the shoe back on.
“Come on, Meg; let's go back to the dorm?” Samantha asked seeing that Megan was happy now. Megan nodded. And so they headed back up. “You guys coming?” Samantha asked the guys turning around and facing them, still on the beach. The guys nodded and followed them.
The next day had come by fast. It was Monday and Samantha and Megan had school just like everyone else. And well to Megan it seemed as though Samantha wasn't happy with going to school just yet. Samantha was still asleep anyways and her alarm clock had ringed five times already. Megan stepped away from the mirror and started shaking Samantha to wake her up. Samantha just hit Megan's hand away. Megan shook her head and turned on Samantha's radio to the max. Samantha almost jumped out of her bed. And Megan turned the music back down.
“You have got to stop doing that.” Samantha said shaking her head. Then she got out of bed and got ready for school. “What class do you have first?” Samantha asked Megan. Megan went over to her desk and got her schedule. She showed it to Samantha. “Algebra?” Samantha said and looked at her own schedule. “I have that after Social Studies.” She sighed. “Try not letting the teacher notice you.” Megan nodded she was use to doing that. After Samantha had gotten ready they headed down to the buses which would take them to their school.
