Chapter 2

They were at the school now, away from the dorms. The school was about four to five miles away from the dorms. Once on the school grounds Megan and Samantha had to separate since they were in different classes. So Megan went over to her Algebra class and Samantha went over to her Social Studies class.
As Megan entered her class and saw that Tony was in her class. But then she also saw that John and Kevin were there as well. She smiled happy to see them. She took a seat near the windows like always. Her seat was near the back the class room. And as she sat there by herself she noticed that Tony wasn't smiling even thought Amy was sitting right next to him. He was looking down at his desk then looked up out the window. Megan saw that he was looking outside. He always did that if he was sad, nervous, or guilty. Megan caught his eye and he caught hers. She looked out the window, but that didn't work, because he moved away from Amy and sat behind Megan. Megan then noticed that the teacher was there and had just told Tony to sit behind her. Megan looked behind her. Tony was still looking out the window.
The school day continued and at the end of the day everyone had at least a bundle of homework. And the teachers didn't bother to take notice to Megan. Before Megan could get on the bus with Samantha she was stopped by Tony. Tony had grabbed her from behind and had taken her around a corner of the school. Megan looked up at Tony, for he was about four or five inches taller than her, a little scared and confused.
“Hey Megan,” He said smiling. Megan just looked at him. Then she shook her head in disbelief.
“Megan I need you to do something for me.” He said, “Can you? Please.” Megan nodded then shrugged like she was saying, “Sure why not.”
“Kay, I need you to give this to Samantha.” He gave her a piece of paper. “Please just give it to Samantha. And I'm really sorry for what I did to her. Now that I see her here all the time I wish that I hadn't broken up with her.” He sounded a little concerned, but that didn't change the fact that he had left Samantha for Amy. Megan began to walk away toward the buses. And Tony followed after her. They were just in time before the buses left. Megan went and sat next to Samantha and Tony went and found Amy to sit next to.

I remember you had said that the day mom went away you wanted nothing more to do with life. You were always drunk and all, but you still went to church. Then you always got kicked out. I soon wished I could have died as well. I didn't want to be beat by you when you became drunk. I never really knew what the matter was with you when mom died. And I never understood what mom had seen in you to marry you.
When I came home from school one day you said you were going to have some friends over and didn't want me there. So I walked with my school stuff over to the park. I was use to this. I never went back home until dusk, but as I went down to the park. I remembered your words and your beatings. I was happy to go away.
For once in my life I felt happy to be away, far away.

Megan smiled as she gained conciseness when they were near the dorms now. She was still happy to be away from her father and her stepmother. Samantha, Megan, and everyone else stepped off the buses and headed back to their dorms. Once back in their room. Megan reached into her pocket for the note that Tony had given her for Samantha. As she was doing that, Samantha was looking through her school things. Megan got the note out of her pocket and put it on her bedside table.
“Man! This is a whole lot of homework for the first day. Huh?” Samantha asked Megan. Megan nodded. “Well better get started then huh?” Megan nodded again.

It was almost 5:00 and that meant dinner time. So Megan and Samantha headed for the cafeteria. On their way there they say John, Jamie, Lenny, Mina, Kevin, and Tom. Samantha stopped to greet them, but Megan just continued to walk. She passed everyone else and continued walking with out looking up. She didn't even return Jamie's greeting. Everyone she passed looked a little confused.
Megan was in the cafeteria now and could see that almost everyone was there. She grabbed a tray, got some food, and sat at the most distant table away from everyone. She was just poking her food when Natasha, the girl's dorm advisor, had come by and sat next to her. Natasha was a beautiful woman. She had long light brown hair and deep blue eyes. She always wore a skirt that went down to her ankles. Megan didn't look up at Natasha. She just continued to poke her food.
“Your name is Megan right?” Natasha said in her English accent. Megan nodded as usual. “I am Natasha. You must have already known that.” She was smiling. Again Megan nodded. “May I ask you one question?” Megan nodded a third time. “Why did you leave you friend behind and come sit by yourself?” Megan looked up this time with confusion. She could not answer that question so she just shrugged. Natasha nodded this time and stood up. “If you ever wish to talk to someone I'm always here.” She said then walked off.
Megan sat there at the table alone. She didn't know what to do next. And she didn't even know why she had left Samantha alone. She had never done that before. So after Megan had finished up her dinner she looked out the cafeteria window to see that the sun was still up and was about to set. So she decided to go down to the beach to see the sunset. She always loved to see the sun go down.
Megan was down by the beach now. She looked for a spot on the sand or the grass to sit on. Once she found a spot on the grass, near the sand, she sat down and looked out on to the horizon. She smiled at it. It's beautiful, she thought to herself. As she sat there she didn't notice that John had come by and sat down next to her.
“Nice sunset huh?” John said taking a seat next to Megan. Megan looked over at him surprised and confused. “The other guys are back at the dorm. I came down here myself. Didn't know that you were going to be down.” Megan looked down. “Hey don't get yourself down. I think that's its nice that you're here. I have company and so do you.” Megan smiled at him like she was saying, “Thank you.” John didn't say anything for awhile. They both just continued to watch the sunset.
“A beautiful sunset,
A beautiful day,
A wonderful life,
With a wonderful girl.” John said. Megan looked at him a little confused. John noticed it and blushed. He began to rub the back of his head as he put his hand and through his hair. “Sorry about that. Just a little thing I read from a book. It just suddenly came to.” He was smiling as he said this. Megan smiled as well. The sun had set and it was dark now.
“Should we call it day?” John asked standing up. Megan nodded and stood up as well. “Here I'll walk you back to your room.” John suggested. Megan just shrugged, but followed after John. “So why did you walk off earlier?” John asked after awhile of silence. Megan shrugged. She wanted to say something, but just couldn't. She didn't know how it would come out. So she kept her mouth shut.
Once they were near the girls' dorm John said good night to Megan and walked off towards the boys' dorm. Megan walked up to her room to find Samantha still up looking through her books. Samantha didn't say anything. So Megan just walked over to her bed and got ready. She went and grabbed a book off of her desk and opened it up. She knew that Samantha would not speak to her. Especially what she did earlier. Megan still wondered why she had walked away from everyone. Soon Samantha fell asleep and so did Megan.

A week had passed and for some reason Samantha would not talk to Megan anymore. And Megan rolled with it. She still hasn't given Samantha Tony's note. Megan had been watching the sunset for the past week with John. Now they were in school and Samantha still wouldn't talk with Megan. Samantha seemed to be the one avoiding her this time. And still didn't understand why. So Megan walked through the hall ways alone. Well until Kevin, Tom, Lenny, and John came out of nowhere. Well actually from around the corner, but it seem out of nowhere to Megan.
“Hey Megan.” Kevin said with a smile. John slapped him upside the head. Megan smiled. And Tom and Lenny started owing like they were saying John was jealous or something. Megan waved at the boys and shook her head in disbelief. Then walked around the corner that they had just come from. As she turned the corner she saw Tony and Amy holding hands and laughing. He said he was sorry for dumping Samantha. Does that look like he's sorry? No. It doesn't, she thought. She shook her head again and passed them. She turned another corner and walked into a crowd of people.
The bell rang and it was first period. For first period Megan had Algebra with John and Mina. When she walked into the classroom she took a seat in the back of the room. John was sitting in front of her and Mina was in the front of the room. They were learning about equations and problem solving. Megan already knew this stuff and it was boring to her, but a good review never hurt.
Megan continued her Wednesday schedule. Then when the school day was over she was off on the bus again, back to the dorms. It was different without Samantha with her anymore. As Megan boarded the bus she saw Samantha with Jamie and Mina all three of them laughing. Something that Megan could not do anymore. Megan took a seat in the back of the bus next to the window. Kevin, John, Lenny, and Tom came on the bus a few minutes later.
“Well you didn't have to hit me upside the head, John!” Kevin said as he made his way to the back of the bus as well.
“Well maybe next time you shouldn't be doing what you were doing.” John replied back.
“Okay why don't both of you stop arguing okay?” Tom asked
“Fine.” They answered and all four of them took a seat behind Samantha, Jamie, and Mina.
“Hey, Kevin.” Samantha said looking behind her at Kevin.
“Hey, Sam.” Kevin replied back to her. Megan rolled her eyes and looked out the window. She knew something was up with Samantha she just didn't know what it was.
When they had reached the dorms Megan was the last one off of the bus. She wasn't feeling so well. She was actually pretty mad. No one ever cared about her and now her friend had deserted her. Not even there to make her feel any better. Megan went up to her dorm room to find Jamie, Samantha, and Mina up there as well. She made her way to her bed to grab something. But as she tried to find what she was looking for she over heard Samantha, Jamie, and Mina talking.
“Ask her.” Jamie whispered to Samantha.
“No.” Samantha replied back.
“Then tell her.” Mina said.
“Only when the time is right.” Samantha said.
Megan didn't know what they were talking about so she grabbed what she was looking for and left the room. She ran down to the beach ignoring what everyone said. She found a shed down by the beach and went in there to change. When she came out she was wearing her swimming suit. It was a hot day and she felt like it. She knew the pools would be full by now. As she went out to the ocean she heard someone behind her. Megan turned around to see her step-brother Dylan. He didn't seem too happy, but continued to walk on his way down the beach ignoring Megan. Megan just shrugged. Something was wrong with everyone today. First Samantha isn't telling her something, and then Dylan doesn't torment her.
As Megan was swimming John had walked by and seen her. He stopped and sat down and watched her swim. He was smiling. “Something about her just makes me happy.” He said to himself. Megan looked up to the beach and saw John sitting next to her stuff. She smiled her shy smile. She got out of the current and walked over to John. She waved at him wanted to say hi, but couldn't. John waved back at her.
“You're a good swimmer.” He said. Megan nodded then reached into her bag and grabbed something in there. When she was done looking through her bag she had taken out something. It was her clip board with some papers on it. She had also taken out a pen for writing. Megan took the pen and began to write on the paper. A few seconds later she showed John the paper. It said:

Thank you very much.

“You're welcome.” John replied while smiling. Something in his expression and eyes had caught Megan's attention. It was familiar. Like the first time she had fallen in love, but she had given up on love long ago. She couldn't be falling for John and he couldn't be falling for her. It seemed more like he would fall for Samantha not her. Megan was blushing very lightly when she looked at John. And yet when she looked at him she saw Samantha. After a few minutes of silence Megan stood up to go.
“Have to go back?” John asked. Megan nodded. She grabbed her stuff and stuffed her clipboard and pen into her bag. “Okay then I'll see you around campus.” John said and stood up as well heading in a different direction from the boys' dorm. He went in the direction that Dylan had gone. Megan didn't even bother to change. She just went straight up to her dorm room to find Samantha still there by herself now. Megan went to the bathroom to change into her regular clothes. When she came out a few minutes later she went to her bed and grabbed a book out from her desk drawer. Both of them were quiet for awhile well until Samantha broke the silence.
“Why'd you walk away from me last week?” She asked in a quiet voice. Megan looked up from her book. Quiet as usually. She looked down a little guilty, cause she didn't know why and she couldn't tell Samantha that. Megan took out her clipboard and wrote on it again. After a few minutes she gave it to Samantha. It said:

I don't really know why. I just didn't feel like talking to the six of them. So I just went ahead and walked in. I didn't know that it hurt you that bad. And I guess I wasn't feeling so good either.

Samantha read the note. Now she looked down in guilt. “I guess I should have known something was wrong. You didn't seem to happy either that day. I'm sorry.” She said. Megan looked at her wanting to say something, but couldn't she still didn't know how to talk at all. She took her clipboard again and wrote on it. This time it said:

It's okay. Really it is. I guess I didn't really show it that much. And not talking to you for a week is like being murdered over and over and over again. But do you and Kevin have something going on? I mean over this past week you haven't talked to me so I don't really know what's going on.

Samantha looked at the note. She seemed as though she was about to cry. “I am so sorry.” She said on the verge of tears. Megan walked over to her and patted her back like she was saying, “It's okay I understand. It was mainly my fault anyways.” She sat down on Samantha's bedside and smiled at her. Samantha smiled back.
“Well about Kevin and me. There's nothing really. I mean I like him and all, but it doesn't seem like he feels the same way.” Samantha said looking down at her stuff. Megan looked down at her.

Don't worry you'll find someone.

She wrote. Then remembered how Kevin had looked and talked to her earlier that day. She felt a little guilty cause Kevin may have liked her and not Samantha. Samantha took notice in Megan's expression. “Something wrong?” she asked. Megan shook her head. Why'd I lie to her? Megan thought to herself. She had never lied to Samantha before.
“You sure?” Samantha asked uncertain. Megan nodded her head. “Okay then you want to head down to get some dinner. And no running or walking away this time.” Samantha said grabbing onto Megan's arm. Megan smiled at Samantha. As they headed down the stairs to the front of the girl's building they met up with Jamie and Mina.
“You tell her yet?” Mina asked. Samantha shook her head. Megan was confused.
“I'll tell you later.” Samantha said shaking her head. So all four of them continued to walk to the cafeteria. About half way there they met up with Kevin, Lenny, and Tom, but John wasn't with them. Megan was confused and Jamie began to throw a fit.
“Where's my brother!?” She started to yell. Kevin and Lenny tried to explain to her where he was
and all, but they actually didn't have a clue where John had gone to. And neither did Megan since
she was the last one to see him.
