5 “A Fabricated Name and A Psychosis Perspective”

Ryan rolled around while half asleep on his bed, unaware that the ringing sounds he thought were from a dream was actually his phone ringing. While still somewhat groggy, he sits up on his bed and stretches as the phone rang again. Finally he got up and proceeded to answer it.

“Hello?”

“Good morning, I’m sorry to bother you but is this the Keller residence by chance?”

“Yes, my name is Ryan Keller, who’s this?

“Ahhh, Ryan so it is you. Dr. Crespin asked me to call you and ask you to come on down to the hospital for a bit. That’s if your not busy of course,” was the soft voice of a woman coming out of the phone.

“Sure I’ll be right there…”

“Thank you, see you soon.”

Ryan hung up the phone and stared at it for a minute thinking to himself, “Man this is sure starting to become more trouble then I bargained for. What could that pesky doctor want now? Pfft, I guess there’s no point in thinking about it… Just get ready and head for the hospital.”

With that Ryan grabbed some clean clothes and took a shower. After a few minutes of cleaning and grooming he walked out of the bathroom.

“I guess I’m ready…”

He walked out his door, locked it and descended down his stairs. As he reached the bottom and looked out into his parking lot he noticed Dr. Crespin leaning against his car on the driveway.

“Yo,” was Dr. Crespin’s greeting as he waved his hand in the air. “Need a ride?”

Ryan nodded and entered his car. It pulled out of the driveway and took off down the road.

“So what’s all this about, going out of your way to come pick me up and take me to the hospital on a Sunday afternoon?”

“Well, to be perfectly honest she’s ready to begin the physical therapy process. Basically she needs to start walking again. We tried to get her to sit in the wheel chair so we could roll her over to the recovery room but she just won’t cooperate with anyone.”

“Let me guess… You want me to go and get her to do it,” said Ryan somewhat annoyed.

“Do you mind if I ask you a personal question?”

“Maybe…”

“Well I’m just going to ask it anyways then. Have you been helping her and doing things for her up to this point because you feel sorry for her or because you like her?”

Ryan was overcome with shock from the question. In his mind he never really thought about it before. Not once did he ever stop to think about why he was helping her or doing things for her. He looked out his passenger side window as the question hanged over his head. The car was silent as it drove down the road.

“Tell you what; you don’t have to answer that right now… I feel kind of bad for forcing it on you. It’s just I can never tell because you seem to change the way you act towards her so easily.

The rest of the car drive was driven in complete silence. After a couple of minutes that passed by seemingly like hours the car finally pulled into the hospital parking lot and parked around back. They exited and walked in the building.

Ryan was desperately searching for something to say to break the silence. The only things that were popping into his mind had to deal with the girl though.

“So… What should we call her until she tells us her name?”

“I really don’t know but considering she lost her memory, she probably doesn’t even remember her own name.”

“I see…”

“I’m sure a name will come to you during the right moment.”

The elevator dinged as the doors opened. They both entered and lifted off to her floor.

“What if she doesn’t like the name I choose?”

“You need not worry; I doubt she will be picky if it’s you choosing.”

Once again the elevator dinged and the doors opened. Ryan thought for a while of a name as they proceeded to her room. Nothing good came to mind though and he gave up just as the doctor opened the door to her room.

“I’ll be right back with a wheel chair, you see if you can get her to sit up on the bed and get her in the mood.”

Ryan walked in and gazed at her. She was just lying there staring at the ceiling while some of her hair dangled off the side of the bed. Her arms were at her sides over the sheets that were covering her.

“So calm, so serene,” thought Ryan to himself. “Wait… That’s it! We can call her Serenity!”

He walked up beside her and kneeled down. Instantly her head turned to face him, her sparkling purple eyes widened and started somewhat shaking after realizing someone’s presence.

“It’s me Serenity, It’s me Ryan. You need to get up and try walking today ok?”

The beautiful purple eyes relaxed slightly after his words were spoken. They shifted around desperately trying to focus on him as she sat up in her bed.

“From this day forward I’m going to start calling you Serenity ok? It’s a very beautiful name, It suites you very well!”

“Seerrr… Seerriiinnn… Seerrinnitttyy…” She replied softly.

Ryan once again was surprised by her speaking. He sat there mystified for a minute only to be interrupted by the doctor.

“I see you found a name, a good one at that.” Ryan looked up behind himself to see the doctor looking down at him smiling.

“Yeah, you were right it came to me all on its own.”

“So do you think she will try today?”

“I don’t know but I got her to…” His sentence is interrupted by her hand slipping into his as she grabbed it with both hands. He looked over at her in awe. She had a very determined look about her.

“I see…” said the doctor.

He moved the chair over next to her so as to allow her to climb into it. Ryan supported her as she clung onto his hand gravely making her way into the chair. After making it into the chair, Ryan lifted her legs into the supports that were connected to the chair. She relaxed and put her arms on the arm rests and feet on the plastic holders. Her glossy purple hair dangled freely behind the chair as the doctor headed for the doorway and out of the room into the hallway pushing her.

Serenity’s arms tensed up and she began breathing somewhat heavily as they began their way down the hallway. Through her eyes she was seeing a narrow hallway with no end. All the people in the hallway had stern faces and were glaring evilly at her. Some of them were pointing at her and some seemed to be making threatening movements. She began shaking immensely. Ryan noticed right away and grabbed her hand holding it tight as they continued down the hallway.

“Everything’s going to be ok Serenity; I won’t let anything bad happen to you.”

Her body was soothed from his words of assurance. They boarded the elevator and pressed the button for the first floor. Her hand tightened on his as the elevator descended so suddenly. On her right and left were now dark shady images of people and the walls were torn with cracks and were very murky in form. As the doors opened the room she had seen drifted out of context and was now changed to another unending hallway.

This one, all though it had no people, seemed more gloomy and darker. There were many doors in this hallway through her eyes. She fidgeted suddenly after hearing a scream that was only heard by her. Ryan was unaware of what she was seeing and hearing but he continued to hold her hand hoping that it was enough to keep her calm. The blood curdling screams were echoing through the hallway in her mind but ended abruptly as they entered a room with many objects for physical training and therapy. It was the recovery room.

“It’s both by the way…”

“What’s both?” Replied Dr. Crespin curiously as they entered.

“The answer to your question that you asked me earlier during car drive up here.”
