Robert walked into Betty's room to find she was channel surfing through the HD channels. He quirked his mouth a little, “ That's pretty cool huh? “
Betty nodded, “ Yeah. Who would have ever thought they'd come up with so many sub- channels. “
“ Yeah, “ Robert nodded. He had pulled on the shirt she had worn the night before. He had washed it and few other things in addition to the other things he had done while she slept.
Betty glanced at him, relieved to see he was wearing a shirt. She noticed it was the one he had let her borrow, the one he said was his favorite. She also noticed how good it looked on him. “ That looks really nice on you, “ The words came out before she could even think about stopping them.
“ Thanks. That's why it's my favorite, “ Robert noticed Betty still looked a little uneasy. “ I thought it looked really nice on you too. “
Betty shook her head, “ It was a little tight. I'm sorry if I stretched it out. “
“ It's fine. It's meant to stretch some, “ Robert smiled. He then tried to look concerned, " Is there something wrong? "
Betty blinked then shook her head, " What makes you think there's something wrong? "
" You seem, I don't know, nervous for some reason. Is there something bothering you? " Robert took a step into the room.
Betty looked at the bed, deciding to tell him the truth or at least part of it. Having him around was making her feel unsettled because of the things she had been dreaming and thinking about him. She sighed, " It's just that I've never had that much company over here. I don't know how to deal with having anyone else in the house. "
Robert furrowed his brow, " Not that much company? Not even when it was you and your mom? "
Betty shook her head, " No. We were always going to other people's houses but she never invited anyone here for fear... "
Robert understood when Betty's voice trailed off. " For fear your dad would come by? "
Betty shut her eyes and nodded, " Yeah. "
" I get it, " Robert wanted to change the subject. He was flattered by the amount of honesty Betty was showing him but was sure it was the concussion. Sometimes, the injury affected emotions. It was something he had to deal with when Pauline was hurt and had violent mood swings.
He was glad Betty wasn't reacting so but it was hard to see her so sad. From what he could ascertain, Betty's father hadn't been a pleasant man to all. He wanted to take her into his arms and tell her everything would be alright but he didn't want to shock her. He was also wary of how nervous she was and didn't want to make her anymore so.
Betty noticed an aroma on the air that made her hungrier than she already was, " Something smells really good. "
Robert jerked his thumb over his shoulder, “ That would be breakfast. Do you want me to bring it to you? “
“ No, “ Betty said. “ I'll come out there. “
“ You don't have to, “ Robert said. " If you're not up to it... "
“ I want to, “ Betty said. “ I'm tired of being in bed. Get my robe. “
Robert looked around and saw it draped over a chair next to Betty's bed. It was black satin and the sash was deep red. He walked over and picked it up. He handed it to her, “ Here. “
Betty took it, “ You go out for a second so I can put this on and I'll call you when I'm done. “
“ Right, “ Robert nodded once. Though she was dressed, she was still being very modest. He found it appealing, modesty being a trait Pauline had lacked. He turned and walked out the door, pulling it closed behind him.
He shut his eyes and let out a heavy sigh, trying to keep his mind off of the things he had seen the time before. He knew Betty would hate him if she knew he had seen her completely naked and would probably never forgive him. “ I'm done, “ Betty called before he had a chance to think of something else.
He re-opened the door to find Betty on the edge of the bed and looking at the floor. “ Let me get your crutches, “ He walked over to them as he tried not to look at her long shapely legs. He thought of the way they had looked in the moonlight at Branslav's house but quickly pushed the image away.
“ Thanks, “ Betty said. She waited as he grabbed them and came to the side of the bed with them. She smiled sheepishly at him, “ Help me up? “
“ Sure baby, “ Robert smiled. He held the crutches as she grabbed onto them, looking away as she leaned forward to grab them. She lifted herself slowly, mounting them before Robert let go. He watched as the fabric of her robe slid down her body, stopping just below her knees.
Betty looked at the floor until she was sure she had her balance then looked up, her eyes locking with Robert's. He stared into her eyes for a long moment then said, “ Are you steady? “
Betty nodded, her heart beating in her ears. Robert looked like he had the morning before when she was certain he would have kissed her if Branslav hadn't been there. “ Yeah. Let's go eat. “
Robert let Betty crutch out in front of him, staying behind her in case she started to fall. He let his eyes glide along her form, the black satin robe clinging to her curves. He longed to run his hands along her sides, to pull her close to him and kiss her neck. He envisioned the scene in his mind, inhaling sharply when he fantasized how Betty would react if he slid his hand into the robe to fondle her.
Betty heard Robert take the sharp breath and stopped. She looked over her shoulder, “ Are you okay? “
Robert opened his eyes and nodded, “ Yeah. Someone just walked over my grave. “
Betty nodded, “ Oh. “
Robert followed Betty out into the narrow hallway that led to the kitchen. He figured she was taking it to save her from traversing the living room to get there. When they reached it, she looked at the floor. “ What's wrong? “ Robert asked when she stopped.
“ Where was the bloodstain? “ Betty scanned the floor.
“ In front of the other doorway, “ Robert pointed. “ I got up as much as I could. “
Betty crutched to the spot then looked at the attic, “ So I probably got caught on the nail, shifted my weight when I felt the nail pull and the step gave way. After that, my ankle most likely rolled and I lost my balance completely. “
Robert thought about it then nodded, “ Sounds like that could be it. “
Betty nodded, “ I just can't remember what happened. That's what irks me the most. “
“ Don't let it. Usually, you don't remember stuff when you hit your head, “ Robert knew that much having to deal with Pauline's concussion. She didn't quite remember what had happened leading up to the fall she had taken.
“ Okay, “ Betty said. “ I'm starving. “
“ You go ahead to the dining room and I'll bring the plates, “ Robert said. He had fixed one for himself and one for Betty. For some reason, his appetite was slowly coming back and he figured it had something to do with Betty. Being around her helped him forget about Pauline for the most part except for a few comparisons he had made in his mind.
“ Right, “ Betty crutched towards the small room off to the side of the kitchen. “ I'll get the lights on my way. “
Robert got the plates from the counter, following. He stopped in the doorway, cocking his head to the side. The dark paneled dining room contained even more of Betty's mother's art. In the center of the room was the table, a tall black iron cafe table with two tall iron chairs. “ Wow. Nice. “
“ Mom was tall too so we needed a taller table, “ Betty explained. “ We'd kneecap ourselves on regular ones. “
“ I bet, “ Robert said. He was used to tucking his legs under chairs to accommodate his size but it looked like he wouldn't have to do that. He brought the plates over, noticing the tabletop was made out of colored tile chips. It was a beautiful Southwestern pattern with shades of turquoise, red and sand. “ Where'd you get this? It's gorgeous. “
Betty smiled, “ Mom made it. She got the frame at a garage sale and replaced the cracked table top with this one. “
Robert set the plates down and walked over to where Betty was standing. He pulled out her chair so she could sit down. “ That's awesome. Your mom was very talented. “
Betty looked at the floor, “ Yes. Yes she was. “
“ That must be where you get your talent from, “ Robert offered.
Betty bit her lip, “ Maybe a little of it. “
“ What do you mean? “ Robert said. “ It has to be. “
Betty sighed, “ Help me into the chair. “
Robert realized what she was trying to say. From the way she was acting, he figured it had something to do with her father as well. “ Oh. Sure. “
Betty backed up to the chair then furrowed her brow. “ Damn. How am I going to do this? “
“ Let me lift you up, “ Robert said. “ When I get you up, you use your right foot for leverage. “
Betty nodded, letting Robert slide his arms under hers. He lifted her up and she used her right foot to help. Once she was in the chair, Robert took her crutches. She frowned when she saw how far from the table she was.
Robert noticed it too and pulled the table so it was closer, “ Is that better? “
Betty smiled a little, “ Yeah. “
Robert went around to his side of the table, pushing his chair closer. He set Betty's plate in front of her then saw something was missing. “ Hold on. “
Betty watched as Robert went back into the kitchen, finding the silverware drawer rather easily. He came back with two forks, giving one to Betty. “ Yeah. That's a good idea. We do need forks to eat with, “ Betty said.
“ I thought it would help, “ Robert said.
Betty took a bite of her eggs and smiled, “ These are really good. “
“ Thanks, “ Robert said. “ I can cook a lot more than that but I do make a mean omelet. “
“ I guess you used some of the onions and cheese I got for Branslav's cooking lesson huh? “ Betty asked then took another bite.
“ Yeah. I figured you'd want to use that stuff up before it spoiled, “ Robert shrugged.
“ Good thinking, “ Betty said.
“ Why thank you my dear, “ Robert smiled.
**
Branslav stood on the top step, leaning against the wall. He watched Betty as she stood at the kitchen sink, washing the dishes. She had come over to make up their cooking lesson and it had gone rather well. He had managed not to burn anything and the food had been edible, most of which he credited to Betty.
He had a beer in his hand and took a swig as he watched her. She wore a pair of tight jeans that hugged her curves, her black velvet top was fitted so it showed of her figure as well. He could see her reflection in the window as she worked, his mind straying to how beautiful she was. He smiled to himself as he noticed he could see her cleavage in the reflection as well.
He drained the beer before walking towards Betty. The garbage compactor was next to her and he thought it would be the perfect cover for what he had in mind. “ Excuse me, “ He said when he reached her.
“ Oh sure, “ Betty stepped to side a bit to let him get the can into the compactor.
Branslav leaned down to open the compactor and put the can in. Once he shut it, he stepped back and Betty moved back to where she had been standing. He stood there for a moment, trying to decide how he would go about doing what he was going to do. He decided to go for it, putting his arms around Betty from behind and holding her to him.
She stiffened, dropping the dish she had in her hand. “ Branslav, “ She whispered after the dish had submerged in the dishwater.
“ Shh. I want you to know how I feel, “ Branslav whispered into her ear. “ Let me tell you. “
Betty was silent, still stiff against him. Though she didn't struggle, he could tell she wanted to get away from him. He didn't know what he had done to make her so scared of him but he wanted to fix it. He wanted her to be comfortable with him.
“ I apologize for anything I may have done to scare you. All I could think about for months after the banquet was your pretty face. All I have ever want to do was hold you and make you feel good. I just want to be with you and no one else. “
“Branslav... “ Betty whispered. Her voice trembled but he couldn't tell if it was from fear or if she was about to cry.
“ Please? I don't want you to be lonely anymore. I want to be by your side and have you as my own, “ Branslav still held her close.
She turned her head to look at him, her beautiful eyes locking with his as he stared deep into them. He felt drawn to her beautiful full lips, the desire to taste them overwhelming him. He brought his mouth down to hers, taking her lips gently in his. He parted her lips with the tip of his tongue, hoping she would follow his lead.
She didn't return the kiss at first and he pulled away. “ What's wrong? “ He asked.
“ I don't know how to kiss a guy, “ Betty whispered. “ Or much else. “
“ Then I'll teach you everything, “ Branslav whispered. “ I'll make you into a woman. I'll make you my woman. “
Betty blushed deeply, “ Branslav... “
“ Branslav! “ Daniel said sharply, waking Branslav from his dream. “ Get off my shoulder. You're drooling. “
Branslav opened his eyes to find he had indeed been leaning on Daniel's shoulder and it was a little damp. “ Sorry about that. I fell asleep. “
“ Yeah. I noticed, “ Daniel said as he looked for something to pat his shoulder dry with.
“ Where are we? “ Branslav looked around. He noticed the bus wasn't moving.
“ Less than half an hour away from Chowchilla, “ Daniel muttered. “ Something is wrong with the motor. The driver is trying to fix it right now. “
“ Oh, “ Branslav said. “ I hope it doesn't take too long. “
“ Me too, “ Daniel looked towards the front of the bus. “ Martin went out to supervise and Coach Sweet is helping the driver. “
“ Oh, “ Branslav said.
Daniel looked around at the other guys but they were either sleeping or listening to music on their headphones. “ What do you think they were talking about earlier? “ Daniel said quietly.
“ They? “ Branslav arched an eyebrow then figured out who Daniel meant. “ I don't know but it doesn't sound good. Whatever it it, it might mean trouble for all of us. “
“ Yeah. I figured that much out. What could have Martin done that's worth blackmailing him? “ Daniel still spoke in a hushed tone.
“ I don't know, " Branslav shook his head. “ It is obviously something big. “
Just then, the bus driver got back on the bus, followed by Coach Sweet and Martin. “ Let's see if this thing will start, “ The driver said.
“ It had better, “ Martin said sharply. “ We can't afford to be late. “
The driver turned the key and the bus started, “ There. “
Martin nodded, “ Good. I want you to take it to an auto shop as soon as we get to San Diego and have it checked out. “
“ I will sir, “ The bus driver sighed.
Martin turned but stopped when he saw Branslav looking at him. “ Is there a problem Korbel? “
Branslav shook his head, “ No. “
Martin frowned and sat down. Coach Sweet went to his seat and the bus driver pulled back onto the highway. Daniel looked at Branslav again, “ So what were you dreaming about anyway? You were muttering in your sleep but I couldn't make it out. “
Branslav arched an eyebrow, “ I was talking? “
“ Muttering, “ Daniel said.
“ Oh, “ Branslav sighed. “ I was dreaming about Betty. “
“ Say no more, “ Daniel put a hand up. “ I don't want to know. “
“ Nothing was going on, “ Branslav growled. “ It was very innocent. “
“ Yeah but where was it was going is what had me worried, “ Daniel said. “ You put your arm around my waist. “
Branslav shook his head, certain he knew where it would have gone if Daniel hadn't woke him. " Sorry about that. "
" Just don't do it again, okay? " Daniel sighed.
**
Betty had just finished eating when she heard the telephone in the hall ringing. “ Could you get that? “ She asked Robert.
“ Okay, “ He said. They hadn't really talked about much. They were both pretty hungry so they just tied into the food. He had been trying not to think about Betty and he wasn't for sure what was going through her mind.
Robert got up and went to the hall, picking up the phone but not sure how to answer. He finally said, “ Rogers-Skogan residence. “
“ Who are you? “ The man on the other end of the line said. “ Why are you answering Betty's phone? “
“ Who is this? You tell me who you are first, “ Robert replied.
“ I'm Miss Rogers-Skogan's manager, “ The man said. “ I'm Alfred Hollister. “
“ Oh, “ Robert said. “ Okay then. I'm a friend that's taking care of her. “
“ Branslav Korbel? “ Alfred asked.
“ Um no. Robert Hughes. Branslav had to leave, “ Robert said.
" Hughes? As in that basketball player from Taos New Mexico? " Mr. Hollister asked.
Robert nodded, " I'm flattered you remember. Branslav had something come up and asked me to help. "
Mr. Hollister sighed, “ I knew it was a mistake for her to agree to his request. I even asked him if he was sure he could care for her. I could have arranged for a nurse to care for her. “
“ Well she's got me, “ Robert replied.
“ Very well. Is Miss Rogers-Skogan awake? “ Mr. Hollister asked.
“ Yes she is. Would you like to speak to her? “ Robert knew what the answer would be.
“ Yes. I would, “ Mr. Hollister said sharply.
Robert frowned, not liking the manager's tone at all. “ Sure. Hang on. “
Robert carried the phone back into the dining room. Betty put her hand out for the handset as she asked, “ Who is it? “
“ Your manager, “ Robert handed her the phone.
“ Oh, “ Betty put the phone to her ear. “ Mr. Hollister? “
Robert watched as Betty started to talk to her manager. His cell phone rang and he rolled his eyes. “ Excuse me, “ He said quietly and walked out to the kitchen. He got the phone out and saw it was Mr. Shaver's number.
Robert flipped the phone open, “ Hughes. What is it sir? “
“ I wanted to see if you made it to Reno alright and see how you were doing, “ Mr. Shaver said.
“ I didn't have any problems getting into town and things are going okay here, “ Robert replied.
“ Just okay? “ Mr. Shaver asked.
Robert sighed, “ Branslav asked me to help him but he behaved like a total ass after I got here. He had a surprise practice and wouldn't tell me why it was so sudden. Other than that, things have been cool. “
“ I can probably tell you why he was acting that way. Do you want to know? “ Mr. Shaver inquired.
“ If you don't want to tell me you don't have to but I would like to know why he was being so difficult, “ Robert said.
Mr. Shaver sighed, “ There's a scout making the rounds through the prep league. He just contacted me about seeing you play this Saturday. My connections say he was in Reno yesterday looking at Branslav and that Hill kid. “
Robert took a sharp breath, “ A scout? As in a scout for the big league? “
“ Yes, “ Mr. Shaver replied. “ I told him you were injured but we'd see how you were feeling Saturday. “
“ I think I can pull a rabbit out of my hat for him, “ Robert said. His heart was pounding in his ears. Without being tied down to Pauline, he could accept any offer any team gave him and start over in a new town.
“ I think you'd better. You know the rest of the team can get along well without you. You're skills have far exceeded this level of play anyway and they all know it, “ Mr. Shaver said.
“ Yeah, “ Robert nodded. His mind was racing with all the possibilities if he were signed to a big league team. He looked towards the dining room, anxious to tell Betty the news.
“ Son? “ Mr. Shaver asked.
“ Yes sir? “ Robert shook his head.
“ I asked how your hands were,“ Mr. Shaver said. Robert hadn't heard him when he said it the first time.
“ Oh yeah, “ Robert said. “ My right is healed up but my left still has a way to go but I think I could play with it if I wrap it minimally. “
“ As long as you won't open the wound again I'll go with whatever you feel is okay, “ Mr. Shaver said. “ I assume you're still coming home Thursday? “
“ Yes sir I am, “ Robert said. “ I really don't have much choice. “
“ That is true, “ Mr. Shaver said. “ I'd better let you get back to your friend then. “
“ Yes sir, “ Robert said. “ See you when I get back. “
“ Goodbye for now, “ Mr. Shaver said then hung up.
Robert hung up his phone then looked towards the dining room again. He wanted to tell Betty the news but wondered how to go about it. He didn't want to mention that Branslav was also being eyed by the scout or she would think he would be leaving too. If she thought that, it would influence her decisions she would make with Branslav.
He walked back to the dining room slowly, planning his words carefully as he walked into the room. Betty was sitting there, looking at the phone but her expression was unreadable. He furrowed his brow, “ What's wrong baby? “
“ I was supposed to do a TV interview on that East Coast trip and the TV show is adamant about getting it. My manager wanted me to approve the plans for the local affiliate to come here Wednesday so they could do the remote, “ Betty said.
“ Did you? “ Robert cocked his head to the side.
“ Yeah, “ Betty looked at him. “ I'm going to be on TV. “
“ That's awesome baby, “ Robert smiled. His smile lessened when he noticed Betty seemed nervous instead of excited. “ Don't you want to do it? “
“ Yes but I'm kind of scared, “ Betty said. “ I've never been on TV before. “
“ You were at the game you came to, “ Robert said.
Betty shook her head, “ That's different. I was just on camera, not talking to anyone. “
“ You'll do fine, “ Robert tried to be chipper to make her feel better. “ What show is it? “
“ 'Hello America', “ Betty sighed.
Robert really couldn't help but to smile at that, “ Baby. That's the number one morning show right now. Do you have any idea how many people are going to see you? “
“ Yeah, “ Betty nodded. “ It's kind of overwhelming. “
Robert walked over to her and put his hands on her shoulders, “ Look at me baby. “
Betty tilted her head up slowly, “ What? “
“ You are going to do fine. I'll even sit off to the side to help you keep your head together, “ Robert said.
Betty blushed and smiled, “ That so sweet of you. “
“ I have some good news for you too, “ Robert smiled though he was nervous to speak the words. “ You know the game Saturday? “
“ Uh-huh, “ Betty nodded.
“ There's a scout coming to see me play, “ Robert said. “ I'm going to play Saturday night. “
Betty glanced at his left hand, “ Are you sure you can? “
Robert nodded, “ I'll just have to be careful how I bandage it but I think I'll be fine. “
Betty frowned, “ Wait. A scout means the big league is interested in you right? “
Robert nodded, “ Yeah. It means I might get signed to a big league team if they like me enough. “
“ So that means you'll be going somewhere else? “ Betty sounded saddened by the news.
Robert frowned, “ Yeah. But we can still be friends. “
“ Yeah, “ Betty said. She furrowed her brow, “ Doesn't that mean he's coming to see Branslav as well? “
Robert opened his mouth but he couldn't think of a nice way to tell her 'yes'. He slumped his shoulders, “ Yeah but just because a scout is coming doesn't me either of us will get picked for anything. “
Betty thought it over, then sighed. “ True. “
“ We'll just wait and see what happens okay? Then we'll go from there, “ Robert hooked a finger under Betty's chin. “ Okay? “
“ Okay, “ Betty said.
