Chapter One: The Bearer of the Light Stone

Ronin sat comfortably in his arm chair, smoking a pipe and rifling through the various papers on his desk. Even nobility had their duties to fulfill, and his needed to be done that day. Sighing and taking a break from his rifling, the middle aged elf turned his head to the library's window at the sound of laughter. The images of his two daughters came into view, and this brought a smile to the lord's face. The eldest, Lillian, was Ronin's pride and joy. She had the high cheek-boned face shared by both he and his wife, long, curly brown hair falling in ringlets around her beautiful face and framing her bright blue eyes. Her skin was as smooth and light as porcelain, the ten year old feminine in every respect.

She was dainty, charming, smart, and so shy that she had many of the young elven boys running after her already. Currently, his treasure was playing with her younger sister by three years, the seven year old Preia. It was no secret that Ronin did not share his love equally between his two daughters; nay, as Preia received one quarter if that.

The girl was the complete opposite of her older sister, straight honey blonde hair falling just past her shoulders and framing sea-green eyes that were perpetually filled with mischief and curiosity. Her face was not as angular as that of her sister's or parents, but even Ronin could see that Preia would be beautiful as well when she was grown. As it was, the girl was more of a neko-jin then an elf, preferring to play in the yard with her cousin Sibel and wear pants rather then learn etiquette and wear gowns as her sister and mother did.

Though she was still his daughter, Ronin could not see anything great in her future. Preia was too different. He often wondered why it was his youngest daughter that Mathias Alexxis, the current General of the Fayrian army, and his eldest son, Zephyr, doted on while they visited, the young girl even beginning to call the young Alexxis lord `Uncle Zephyr'. Ronin shook the thoughts from his head, refusing to dwell on the subject.

It often irked him that no matter how many times he had proposed an arranged marriage between Lillian and Zephyr, Mathias continuously refused. The General would simply smile, saying `I want to let him find his own way in life,' and that would be the end of it. The Louinia lord had finally given in after Zephyr himself had said he would never, no offense to be taken by the lady, marry Lillian in this life time. Something about her not being his type of girl.

Whatever the case, Mathias and Zephyr had been away on an important mission for the past seven months, and as such, Ronin had not had to deal with them in quite some time. The only downfall to this was that Preia missed her `uncle' greatly, and her crying before she went to bed was beginning to wear on her father's patience.

“Lord Ronin!” looking up at the sound of his name, the elven lord found himself staring at a very worn looking messenger, clutching a letter and package of sorts in his right hand.

“A letter and parcel from General Mathias Alexxis of Fayrie,” he announced, Ronin mentally rolling his eyes at the formal greeting.

“I thank you, now go,” taking the packaged, he watched the messenger bow before leaving, then turned to look at the parcel, brows furrowing. What on earth would Mathias have sent him?

Opening the letter first, Ronin set the small parcel down on his desk, unfolding the small piece of paper and scanning over the contents briefly. Eye's nearly popping out of their sockets at what he read, he scanned it over several more times to make sure he wasn't seeing things.

Dear Ronin,
Sorry I can't deliver this myself, King Andreas needs help rounding up a few assassins that went after his children the night before last and I offered my assistance. However, it was urgent that I send this to you now, as it is one of the most important discoveries ever made. Steal yourself for this, old friend, or I'm afraid you might just faint. We've found it; after years of searching, we finally found the heart stone of light. Would you believe it's been hidden just behind, bless her soul, the shrine of Etaine this whole time? But that's not what's important; what's important is what I must tell you now. You're daughter is the wielder of the stone.

Don't faint! I cannot write her name for, if this letter were intercepted, along with the stone, then she would be in grave danger. I'm sure you know which it is though, as it is not hard to tell. The reincarnation of Lady Fayria should be easily recognized, after all. Anyways, I must be off, but first, I must tell you one more thing; do not touch the stone with your bare hands! Only the true wielder may touch it and remain unscathed; it will burn the flesh of anyone else in rejection. You must give it to your daughter straight away, so that she can begin to train herself to use the stone's abilities. Best of luck to you, Ronin, and Zephyr and I will see you in ten years, for we must remain in Malo for that long still. Give my love to your children and Jamina,

Mathias

Ronin stared at the letter long and hard before shifting his gaze to the small parcel, realizing now just what it was that was concealed beneath it's linen casing. Hesitantly picking it up, Ronin pealed back the linen to reveal the stone, not touching it. The yellow gem gleamed softly in the sunlight that drifted in through the window, and Ronin vaguely noticed the golden chain that it was attached to.

Hurrying outside to where his children were playing, Ronin smiled greatly.

“Lillian! Child, come here, I have a gift from Mathias!” Lillian turned, making her way calmly to her father.

“What is it Father?” she breathed in awe, staring at the stone. Young Preia followed after her sister curiously, gazing at the stone in the same awe her sister showed.

“It is the heart stone of light,” he said, pulling the stone out by the chain and looping it around her neck, the stone falling against the front of her bodice, “and you are it's guardian Lillian! You are the reincarnation of the Lady Fayria!”

The brunette gasped, then smiled, reaching up to touch it but looking to her father when his hand stopped hers.

“Do not touch the surface with your bare hand,” he said simply, “or it will burn you.” Lillian nodded, her hand dropping away. Ronin pretended not to notice the way his youngest stared at the stone hanging from her sister's neck, truly believing that Lillian was the one Mathias' letter had spoken of.

He did not know that his mistake would lead to problems in the future.
