Chapter Two: The Sword and the Letter
“Please visit again soon, Lady Lillian, it's always a pleasure to have your company in our home! And tell your parents hallo for me!”
“Thank you, Lord Brannon, and I will! Take care!”
Lillian curtsied gracefully to the elven lord, straightening to flash him an innocent smile. Preia stood, bored, beside her older sibling, the thirteen year old bowing stiffly when her sister elbowed her sharply in the side. Turning and walking away down the manor's front path, Lillian's skirts swished about her as she daintily stepped around pebbles littering the path, casting a glance towards the stiff form of her younger sister.
Preia was practically a head taller then Lillian, despite the fact that she was three years younger, and she walked with her arms crossed behind her head and her eyes closed, evading the obstacles spread about her path as easily as the brunette.
“I don't understand why you feel the need to drag me along on these little `meeting's' of yours,” the blonde muttered, Lillian smiling at her sisters obvious resentment.
“I am not the only one who eventually must web, Preia,” she replied quietly, “and mother and father simply wish for the two of us to marry into good families as soon as possible,” Lillian turned to look back at her sister, not surprised to see that Preia's eyes were opened wide and she was sputtering angrily.
“I'm thirteen! There's no way in hell I'm going to even think about getting married now!” Lillian looked down at her feet as they continued to walk, her hands clasped in front of her and just under the pale yellow jewel that hung from her neck, as they fell into an awkward silence.
“There's no harm in looking,” she whispered after the silence had escalated, glancing up at her younger sibling. Despite the fact that Preia despised anything feminine, and wore pants rather then skirts and dresses, Lillian still thought that her sister was very beautiful. Preia's honey blonde hair was always pulled back into two tight, feathered buns, the wispy ends of her hair spread out around the backs of her ears, her bangs hanging haphazardly across her glittering green eyes, now a deep emerald rather then the sea green of her youth.
Preia's long, pointed ears had several piercings gracing the tanned surfaces, mainly small silver hoops with some smaller studs. Their parents hadn't agreed with her doing this, of course, but then, when did they ever agree with anything that Preia did? Never.
“Mother and father don't give a shit whether I get married or not,” Preia ignored her sisters surprised gasp at her choice of words, but simply continued, “I'm the second daughter, the imperfect one. You're the wielder of the frigging light stone, for crying out loud, of course they want you to marry because they know that lots of high society males would love to marry you!” the bitterness in her sisters tone stung Lillian despite the fact that she knew it wasn't her that Preia was mad at.
“Oh, shit, sorry Lillian… I'm not angry at you…” the brunette placed a hand gently on her siblings shoulder, giving her a reassuring smile.
“I know…”
“Lady Lillian! Lady Preia!” the two started at the sound of their names being shouted, turning to see one of their fathers pages running towards them.
“My ladies,” he panted, bending over panting when he reached them, “your father has requested your presence back at the manor, immediately. It seems a letter from King Andreas has arrived, along with a package from General Alexxis,” the sibling's eyes lighting up, they followed quickly after the page, soon entering the Louinia manor and heading to their fathers study.
Ronin jumped up when his daughters entered the room, immediately sweeping Lillian into a long hug.
“Lillian my dear, I have wonderful news!” he exclaimed, completely ignoring Preia's presence.
“What is it father?” the sixteen year old breathed, staring curiously at the letter held tightly in her fathers hand, bearing the royal crest of Malo.
“Listen closely, I'll read it to you,” Ronin cleared his throat and forced himself to calm slightly, relaying the message to his daughters.
“Dear Lord Louinia,
It is with great joy that I send you this letter. I am sure that you know of the prophecy concerning the heart stones of light and lightning, and just recently it was discovered that my son, Prince Rye, is the wielder of the Lightning stone. I hear-by issue a request for a marriage between my son and your daughter, Lillian, the reincarnations of the Lady Fayria and Sir Zealous.
King Andreas,”
Preia and Lillian stared at their father, Lillian the first to speak.
“I… I am to wed prince Rye?” she whispered, hands shaking slightly.
Ronin nodded excitedly, sweeping his eldest daughter into a long hug, laughing loudly. Preia stood silently by, processing the information while her eyes drifted to a long packed set on her father's desk. It looked to be a sword.
“Oh, Preia, that came for you from General Mathias, you may take it to your room and open it,” nodding, Preia grabbed the package then dashed from the room, the news of her sisters engagement haunting her mind. She jumped onto her bed and tore away at the packaging, eyes lighting up at the sight of the sword within. Its hilt was white with gold accents, and two wings served as decorations, the blade long and silver. It looked suspiciously like the description of the legendary sword of Etaine she'd read about, but Preia simply grinned and shrugged that thought off.
Now her father could not refuse to allow her sword training.
