Chapter 2

They finally arrived at the harbor. It took a day and a half to get there but they were there! Miya stood on the beach as Haru began putting the supplies on the boat with the help of sailors and people who worked around the area. She smiled, people would do anything for her.

She stared out to the sea. The waves had her entranced and everything was so calm and peaceful. Seagulls could be heard up above her. This is what made her wish she had a castle hear the sea. Her feet waded in the waters. The waves washed up against her bare feet. It felt soothing. She ran her hand through her hair, pushing back the many strands that were blowing in her face.

“Lady Miya!” Haru called. Miya turned to him, “come now were all finished!” She nodded, slipping on her sandals and started to run towards him. She stopped when she saw the “ship”.

The boat itself wasn't that remarkable. She understood it had to be small enough for only a couple of people to steer but still… it was so small. It was a shrimpy looking thing that she swore she could walk across the entire thing in twenty steps. The mahogany wood that made up the vessel seemed new but that wasn't enough to make-up for the thing missing…

“Where am I supposed to stay?” Miya inquired trying not to sound too whiney. She got a few chuckles out of the small crowd making her turn slightly pick in embarrassment. As if she would know where to go in this tiny thing. Haru took her over to a section to the boat and stopped. Miya cocked and eyebrow not sure why he was taking her to a spot that looked the same as any other place on the wooden craft. Noticing that she still didn't know what he was getting at, he pointed down. Miya looked downward at her feet and noticed a small square indention with a latch. She stared at it for a while, then back at him confusion still plastered on her face. Haru practically wanted to smack his forehead at that moment, but instead he smiled brightly.

“That's it!” He said with an overdone enthusiasm for the full effect.

“WHAT?!” Miya's mouth gaped open with shock and he noticed even some slight disgust in her features. “What's it? Because I know that can't and won't be where I'm staying.” Miya folded her arms to show just how serious she was.

“Now, now my lady, it will only be for a day or two.” Haru comforted calmly.

“A day or TWO?! I have to stay in there for more than a day?” Miya was very much the opposite of calm. “Haru I won't do it!”

“Well my apologies, but you only gave me two days and said we only needed myself and you. I had to find these sailors on my own!”

“Haru, are you complaining to me about my decisions?” Miya asked threateningly.

“No ma'am,” Haru's response was in a sigh.

Before she knew it they were already at sea and a day had already passed. The waves brushed against the boat gently. Warmth from the sun heated the bodies lying around lazily on the boat. She was one of them of course. She used her hand to shield the sun rays from her eyes for a moment to look at the sky above her. It seemed so endless. Like it never had a place to go or stop. She smiled and lowered her hand. It was then that she saw in the corner of her eyes, Haru gazing at her. She looked his way but as soon as she did he turned away as if he had something to do. She scowled unsure of his intent.

She had known Haru for as long as she could remember. He was her best friend as a child and as he grew older he became Miya's servant by her orders.
She looked at him from the other side of the boat.
She wondered… if he was mad that he had to serve her hand and foot… She shook the though away. How could he? She was the nicest person to be under!... right? Ok, she was tough on him sometimes but he never seemed to mind. In fact he would smile and sometimes laugh at her! It would make her so angry sometimes.

Suddenly she was knocked from her laying position and onto her stomach with a thump. She groaned and looked up. The sky was gray with clouds. She whined to herself… weather on the water was so unpredictable. She picked herself up and brushed the invisible dust from her dress. Haru came immediately to her side and anyone who had been sitting around was now at their posts ready to take on the abrupt storm. Haru led her down to her so called “chambers”.

“You stay here, I'm going to go see what I can do to help with the boat.” He verbalized.

“Are you telling me what to do?” He gave her a strange look and she sighed rolling her eyes in the process, “I'm kidding, I'll stay here like a good girl.”

Haru smiled and patted her on the head playing along with the “little girl” act which she scowled to. He then took off and left her there. Miya told him to be careful on his way out.
She was then once again knocked off her balance by the crashing waves onto her bed/cot. Stupid Ocean… It always seemed better when you were just looking at it from the shore.
She heard shouting from above; People yelling orders or yelling about what they can and can't do; People yelling about what went wrong. She didn't know what was going on but she wished they would just stop screaming at the top of their lungs. It wasn't scary, it was annoying. This is why she wished it was just her and Haru. But of course, they wouldn't be this far out to sea without all the others.
More strong waves crashed into the boat making her slide but not knocking her off balance, seeing as she was already lying down clinging onto the bed sheets. Ok… so she was a little scared. This was a smaller boat than the one she came to her land by, MUCH smaller and it could very well tip over if the waves were strong enough.
She clung onto the sheets like they were her life line and clasped her eyes shut trying to picture something else besides a dark, damp room. She thought it couldn't get worse when suddenly a voice yelled out, “ace-or-elves!!!”

“huh?”

BAM!!!

Miya was knocked to the floor bringing the sheets with her. She finally interpreted that the man had actually said “brace yourselves”… a little too late to figure that out though. As she picked herself up she heard footsteps rushing down the stairs that lead to her room. Haru hurried in the door.

“Are you alright Lady Miya?!” He asked with a worried expression. Miya's head poked out from behind the cot with sheets blanketed over her.

“Do I look ok to you?!” she retorted. He softly chuckled with relief spreading across his features. “What happened anyway?”

Miya walked with Haru up to the deck. The wind whipped her hair around and she grabbed onto Haru subconsciously. They appeared to be on an island of some sort, however it was everything other than welcoming. Even though it was dusk, uncomfortable heat filled the air. Miya wiped her forehead already feeling sweat forming.

“Well isn't this a beautiful sight,” she said sarcastically, “See Haru? I told you we should have lived here.”

Haru caught her amusement and smiled, shrugging with mock apology. He then went to the human-sailors and asked what the damage was. Luckily the boat wasn't hardly damaged at all, and that they could continue to there destination by tomorrow. Miya sighed. But what were they going to do until then?
She was about to sit down but something caught her eye. Not too far in the distance was a silhouette of a structure of some kind. Her eyes focused on it trying to make out the details.

“What are you looking at?” Haru questioned. She pointed without looking at him and Haru's gaze followed her finger to the dark building. “What's that? Would someone honestly live here?” Miya shrugged.

“Let's go see!” she said as she bolted off.

“Lady Miya! W-wait a moment!” Haru quickly followed behind Miya realizing she was disregarding him.

As they approached the large dwelling they both slowed to a walk. On the way Haru noticed that there was a sign. He stopped to study it.

“Lady Miya,” He called out reading it, “It says here `do no enter'……My Lady!” Haru was getting frustrated with Miya ignoring him constantly. Reluctantly he followed her. He couldn't talk her out of anything. She was one of those types of individuals that, if she has a goal, she would do it without any regard to her surroundings. If a sender of death was in her path mumbling something about how she would die if she passed him, she would run him over and leave him embedded on the ground. He smiled as this was actually a past experience.
Her will power was so strong. Haru believed she could do anything… or at least try to anyway. Still… that was something he admired about her.

Together they approached the building that was now towering over them. “Welcome” wasn't the first thing that came to mind as they gazed up at the monstrous structure. Malice seemed to surround the building for a reason Haru nor Miya could figure out. Miya made her way in followed by a rather nervous Haru who was continuously repeating that they should return to the humans to see how they could help and such.

“Don't be afraid Haru, I'll protect you,” She said mockingly.

“I am not afraid… more like… a bad feeling…” he said sounding distant at the last part.

“That's just what frightened people say,” she said smiling. He scowled at her and again claimed that he was not afraid.
As he was arguing, Miya pushed on the huge steel door that led in. It came to a large empty hall. It was dark, musky and humid. They began to explore a bit. The hall only went one direction. As they walked they noticed many caged areas. All of them seemed to be empty.

“It seems we've stumbled upon a prison of some sort…” Haru affirmed.

“Where's the person in charge?” Miya inquired suspiciously.

“Perhaps it's abandoned?”

“I wonder…”

She and Haru went to the end of the hall which was as large as the entrance. It was quite dark however and was beginning to get hard to see. It was then that both of them smelt something rather foul.

“ugh…” Miya put her sleeve to her nose, “Do you smell that?!”

“How could I not?” Haru said doing the same. “It smells as if someone has traveled to the afterlife.” And as if on cue, Miya suddenly screamed out in horror. “What? What is it? Are you alright?” Haru asked, worried that something might have happened to her.

“It depends on you definition of the word,” she said shakily. Haru made his way over to her to see what she had found.
It was a corpse.

“Hmm…,” He started, “It's a woman… I think… looks like she's been lying dead for a while… don't know what happened to her… the heat maybe.”

“Ew, that's so repulsive,” Miya murmured feeling quite nauseated at the sight. Haru took off his cloak and put it over the woman. This must have been the malicious feeling.

“We'll get the humans to take care of her. She's their own kind.” Haru looked up at Miya, “shall we go now m' lady?”

“Of course not!” She said, scaring Haru a little by how excited she sounded. “We have to see what else is here! Follow me!”

“B-but Lady Miya!!” He said as he once again had to run after her. They went down stairs leading to what seemed to be some sort of basement area. But it still had cells. If it wasn't dark or humid enough, down here was even worse. The walls were very warm, hot even. It was very uncomfortable to be here and Haru didn't know exactly how far Miya wanted to go before she felt satisfied. Suddenly the path broke into two directions.

“I'll go this way,” Miya said going to the right, “you go that way.”

“M' lady, what are we looking for?” Haru asked sounding rather exasperated. He heard her make the `I don't know' sound (meaning nothing in particular), followed by her footsteps heading right. He sighed and went left as she had said.

Miya went down the hall humming to herself. This was more exciting then watching people repair a boat, although it was pretty repulsive in here. She examined each cell as she passed finding them interesting. Empty, empty, cot, stool, cot and stool, empty, sink with cot, just a cot, cot and figure, empty, empty, c-
She stopped.
Miya started walking backwards, backtracking a couple sells to where she swore she saw something. Sure enough when she got there, there was a person lying on the ground half covered with a black cloak, his aged white hair was spread across the floor.

“Hey, old man!” she called, “Are you alive?” it was highly unlikely. She nervously fidgeted with the door until she realized it wouldn't open, then she began rummaging through her robes. She pulled out a silver key. She had grabbed it off the dead body and didn't tell Haru. She inwardly smiled enjoying keeping things from him. She put the key in the hole and slowly turned it. Her eyes widened when she heard the lock click and opened it victoriously. “Old man!”
No answer.
She walked to the figure and bent over turning him over to face her. Suddenly the young demon woman realized that the “old man” was actually quite young. A gasp escaped from her lips. He had the face of and individual in his twenties; Still a boy. (She has NO room to talk… she's seventeen) He was also her own kind, a demon. How surprising to see such a breed. Even though he was young his hair was white as the snow she's seen in winter. He must have been of the Shiroi demons (Literal meaning: Lacking color) She had thought they all were dead; this was a surprise to her.
She gazed at his face musingly. He wasn't that bad looking. In fact, he was quite handsome. Miya noticed something on his cloak; a silver pendant of some sort. She unclipped it off his mantle and inspected it, rather fascinated. There was a stunning, oval azure gem embedded in it with two engraved wings almost seeming to circle it. It was and angelic item!
She jumped a little when he stirred and she quickly put the pendant in her own robes. Her heartbeat quickened when his eyes slightly opened, revealing brilliant amber eyes. Barely half-open they stared into nothingness, and she knew he was barely conscious. He started mumbling something. She bent over a little to hear.

“Can… you see them…?” he asked quietly, almost weakly.

“See what?” She asked curiously. There was a long pause and suddenly, like he was aware of her presence, he looked at her with blank, drained eyes.

“My wings…” he whispered before falling back into unconsciousness.

“Eh?” She sat there completed dumbfounded. Wings? What the heck?! He didn't have any! This guy was weird!

“Lady Miya!—,” A familiar voice echoed through the chamber.

“Haru! Get over here quick!” She yelled.

“Where is `here',” he asked to himself searching the cells.

“Over here!”

Her arm waved from behind the wall of one of the cells and he rushed swiftly to her destination. “What? What is it? What did you find?” Of course, that question was quickly answered when he entered the small room completely, “What on Euraah?! (the name of their world) Why is this demon here?”

“I don't know, why don't you ask him?” she said with a sarcastic smile. He glared at her in annoyance.

“Clearly I can't do that…”

They both stared for a moment at the still figure on the ground. Then Miya turned her azure eyes to Haru with a pleading look. He felt her eyes on him and looked at her with and exasperated scowl. “No,” he said.

“Haru, I haven't said anything yet.”

“I know what you're thinking and he is NOT coming with us. He is in here for a reason and we shouldn't become involved in something we don't belong in. By the way, why is this cell open in the first place?”

“Oh, I had a key to it.”

“And how did you manage to get a hold of that?” He inquired suspiciously.

“Haru don't get off subject,” Haru rolled his eyes. “Now, I will not leave a fellow demon stranded here like this! He's going to die!” Haru shrugged the `it's-not-my-problem' type way which only added oil to Miya's ever-escalating fire. “Haru… I ORDER you to carry this young man to out boat. He will accompany us until he has recovered.” There it was; the `order'. Haru's shoulders slumped and he reluctantly picked up the immobile figure on the floor and followed the now contented Miya out of the prison, who was secretly fiddling with the angelic article in her robes.
