Right. After another few minutes in the freezing snow, they made it to the lumber yard which was a sprawling expanse of a place with many people running around trying to finish their day's work while battling the blizzard. "Pardon me!" he called out, dodging a truck full of trees that went roaring past them. "Where can we find Bob?"
"Bob? He's over on in the main building," the man replied.
Sai nodded, guessing that the main building was the larger version of all the smaller buildings. They moved past the men, snow, and everything just to get to it. Once they were there, they dusted the snow off themselves, trying to find this Bob person.
"You must be the people that Donna called about." Turning around they were greeted by a bear of man. At least seven feet tall of pure muscle and hair. He laughed as their eyes grew wide at his size. Despite his dominating nature, his eyes were merry and light. "She said you were looking for some furniture. That right?"
"Yes sir," Sai replied.
"Okay. Give me a few minutes and I can take you down to my house and we can talk about some prices. Just stay right here until the whistle blows."
The two stood back and waited. After the whistle blew throughout the entire logging area, Bob came back wearing a thick coat. "So Sai, Donna said that you might be interested in some work. You know anything about logging?"
"No," he admitted.
Bob nodded and picked up an axe, tossing it to Sai who caught it, frowning at heavy it was. It was a lot heavier than a normal axe. "You think you can handle that?"
"Yeah...I think so."
"Okay. Be here before sunrise tomorrow and we'll give you a trial run."
"Oh...okay." Handing him back the axe, they left and he motioned them to his truck. Within another twenty minutes they were at his home.
"The misses is getting dinner ready. Would you like to stay?"
"No thank you, we ate at Donna's," he smiled. Bob nodded and led them through the back, the smell of pot roast and potatoes filling the air.
"Bob? That you?"
"Yes dear. Gimme a minute. Some kids want to buy our kids furniture."
"Okay!"
He led them back to a room and opened up the door revealing the furniture. "Um...I don't know what to pick," Sai said, stepping aside for Hayden to check it out.
"Well...how much is it for things? Then we can go off what we can get with what we have," she said.
"The beds are ten. Dressers five, and nightstands are two," he explained.
"Ten, five, and two what?" she asked not getting it.
"Dollars," he chuckled.
"Well...the beds are big and we only have one set of sheets anyway..." she said. "We can share?"
"Um...yeah, now that's fine," he said quickly.
"You two are married right? That's what Donna told me when she called."
"Married? What?!"
"Yes, Donna said that you were a married couple. Don't tell me that you're going to share your bed when you're not married."
"We can't afford two beds," she said.
Bob looked like he was about to say something about it, but Sai took her hand and smiled. "No. No. We are married he assured him."
Bob looked them up and down and shrugged, giving them a wide grin before slapping Sai on the back, nearly knocked him over in the process. "Then that's great! You know what? I'll give you the dresser and night stand for free if you'll help me load it onto the truck."
"Deal!"
He lied? Why would he lie? She watched as they loaded the things in the truck then crawled in next to Sai as they started back to the diner.
It took them awhile, but Joe managed to carry most of the furniture by himself...with one hand. After they got everything set up, he wished them luck and told Sai that he would see him in the morning before leaving.
The two of them moved everything in place and Hayden made the bed up. "Why did you lie to him?"
"He had four crosses in his house and a bible in his truck," he explained. "He's the really religious type. He wouldn't have sold us the bed if he thought that we'd be sharing it and weren't married."
"Now we have to act married...I don't know how to pretend to be married..." She pouted and sat on the bed. "I'm not a good liar."
He laughed and sat back on the bed. "Don't worry. We don't have to act married. I don't know how to do that either, but it seems that we were already acting like it for Donna to think that we were married."
"Oh...right..." She stood and unpacked their things then put them away. Afterward they both got showers. "It's still early. Want to play cards?" she smiled and held up a stack of cards.
"Sure," he said, sitting on the bed and patting the spot for her to join him.
She plopped down then started dealing. The cards had a different naked woman on each one. "Sorry...they were my dad's..."
"Oh um..." His cheeks tinted and he shifted as he stared at the cards. "No...it's...it's okay."
She stared at her hand then glanced at him. They played for about an hour before Hayden finally gave up. "You beat me every game..."
"It runs in the family," he laughed. "I'm good at reading people and you can't bluff."
"I'm not a good liar," she said and put the cards up.
"That's probably a good thing," he told her.
She pulled her night gown over her shoulder and slipped the first aid kit to him with a smile. He scooted closer to her and pressed his hands to her flesh, undoing her bandages and then taking a wipe to clean off her wound for her. She cringed and hissed but her eyes didn't leave his.
Once he was through, he pressed himself against her as he wrapped her wound back up. "There you go," he smiled. "All taken care of."
"Thanks..." she whispered, slowly pulling her strap back up.
"Well, we'd better get some sleep," he whispered slowly. "We've got to be up early."
She nodded and crawled under the covers. He crawled in beside her. Once they were in the bed they realized that their bed wasn't nearly as big as it seemed once they were in it. Their shoulders brushed against each other as they got comfortable. For a while she just stared at the ceiling. After a few more minutes, she turned on her side, moved his arm, and curled against his chest, placing her hand over his heart while yawning.
He couldn't stop smiling as she got comfortable. "I take it you like sleeping like this?" he asked softly, his hand moving up slowly to play with her hair.
"Yeah..." she said softly. It was the first time in a long time she found a safe place. A place she could just sleep and not worry or have nightmares. It was like he was guarding her.
"Me too," he whispered. Running his fingers through her hair, he twirled it around his fingers. Slowly he leaned down and nuzzled her. "Goodnight."
"Night," she whispered as she buried her face in his neck.
Her breath tickled his flesh, sending goosebumps over it. It felt...well...nice. Somehow he didn't think that he would get much sleep tonight at all. She, however, slept peacefully. Her breathing evened and her fingers curled on his shirt, gripping it tightly as if he would slip away. The sun wasn't even out when he had to get up for work. Slowly he slipped out from beneath her. It was too cold for a shower so he started changing in the bedroom, wanting to get into his warm clothes as quickly as possible.
She slowly stirred noticing he was missing. Blinking a few times she rubbed her eyes. "Sai?"
"Hey, I've got to start walking to work," he whispered through chattering teeth as he pulled his pants on.
She stood and turned the heat up. Pulling her hair back from her face, she sat back on the bed and watched him.
Buttoning his pants. He slid off his night shirt and then pulled on his thickest shirt and jacket. Once he was dressed, he sat down beside her and put on his shoes. "Get some more rest. The diner doesn't open for an hours."
"I'll bring you some lunch," she smiled.
"Sounds good." Leaning over, he kissed her cheek. His eyes widened quickly when he did that and he pulled back. "Uh...I mean...I'd...I'd better go." Pulling his jacket against him, he quickly hurried out the back way. What had he just done? He didn't even think about it. It just happened.
She placed her hand on her cheek a little taken back and as frozen as a rock. She was like that for a while before finally snapping to and slipping to sleep. Donna woke her up and handed her a new uniform. She put it on and pulled her hair into a ponytail then hurried down stairs. She smiled at how busy it was.
"How you know how to serve, girly," Donna smiled.
Hayden smiled bigger and nodded. Putting her apron on, she went straight for a table.
Sai had no idea what e was getting into. He knew that he was going to need a thicker jacket. Even while Bob was telling him what he was going to do and how to do it, he was thinking about what he had done before leaving home. He still couldn't fathom what had made him do it.
"Hey! Careful with your axe!"
Sai nodded and held onto his axe carefully. "Sure." Within an hour he was chopping down trees and pulling them back to trucks. Even at the foundry it was never this much work. By the time lunch came around his entire body was sore and he was tired and starving. Leaning against the main building, some of the guys were laughing and talking about things that he really didn't care about. He pulled his hat lower over his eyes and pulled his jacket close, breathing into his hands to keep them warm.
Hayden wrapped the hot lunch in a hot towel to keep it warm. With her tips in her pocket, she tracked through the snow to a store. She smiled at the person that came to help her then picked out a few things and had them wrap it up paying with the tips she made. Afterward, she went through the snow again to the lumber yard. "Sai," she smiled and sat next to him. She sat the wrapped things she bought in his lap. "Here you go!"
"What is this?" he asked with a tired smile. Opening it up, his smile just got bigger as he pulled out the thick jacket and gloves. "Hayden...these are amazing. You didn't have to spend your money on me though." He set the food down and stood, quickly pulling on the warm clothes, shuddering and sighing in contentment as it blocked out the cold. "Thank you."
"The man said that all the lumber men use those gloves. They keep the frost out," she smiled. "I had just enough for them both so I was lucky. I'm glad it fits!"
"It fits perfectly." He took her hand in his thick glove and pulled her to him. "Thank you."
Her eyes widened. Slowly, her arms wrapped around him. "You're welcome," she whispered in his chest.
A bell whistled and he groaned. "I'd better eat what I can and get back to work," he whispered.
She nodded and pulled back. "Alright. I'll have a warm blanket waiting for you. And a warm dinner. I'm going to stop by the market and get a few things with some of our savings."
"Okay. I already can't wait to get back home," he laughed.
Smiling, she handed him the warm meal and kissed his cheek. "Have a good day," she said and hurried off while pulling her scarf tighter around her.
His hand reached up and touched the spot where she had kissed him. By the end of the day he was exhausted, but happy. He was kind of curious what this meant for them. He had kissed her then she had kissed him.... Once he was home, he groaned and started peeling off the layers upon layers of clothes. "Hey," he smiled in exhaustion.
"Hi," she smiled from the kitchen. "There is a warm bath ready for you. Dinner will be ready in ten minutes."
"You're wonderful," he laughed. Grabbing his night clothes to change into, he went to the bathroom and sighed as the warm water washed over him. Before he realized it, however, he was fast asleep in the bath.
Ten minutes later, a knock came on the door. "Sai? Dinner's ready. Are you ok?" The only response was his steady breathing. She put her hand over her eyes and opened the door. "Sai?"
A soft moan escaped his lips when he heard her voice. "Huh? Hayden? Five more minutes," he whispered in his sleep.
"Sai...you are naked and dinner is getting cold," she said with her hand over her eyes.
"Huh!?" He got up slowly, his eyes widening as he realized what was going on. "Oh! Hayden! Out! I'm naked!" He was blushing while trying to cover up.
"Yeah I know!" she said and closed the door. Going back to the kitchen, she put the food on plates.
He dried off and got dressed quickly. Slipping out of the bathroom, he moved and sat down at their small table. "Sorry about that. I kind of fell asleep."
"I noticed," she laughed lightly and placed a plate in front him before sitting down with hers.
"You're getting really good at cooking," he said in between bites. "This is amazing. How was work?"
"Busy. She wasn't kidding when she said she gets a lot of business. She's the only dinner in town. She said tomorrow would be really busy because it's Friday. Apparently Bob brings the workers in for lunch on Friday like a thank you before passing out pay checks."
"Lunch indoors sounds good. Looks like I'll be able to see you at work." Grinning, he finished his meal in record time before reaching out and taking her hand. "So...um...about this morning and when you left my work today..."
"Um...yeah?" she asked setting her fork down.
"I just...I mean, I've never really done it before, but I really like you," he said slowly. "So, I guess what I'm trying to ask, is would you be my girlfriend?"
Her eyes widened. "I don't know how to be a girlfriend..."
"It's not exactly hard. Cuddling, hugging, kissing, and being together. That about sums it up."
"Kissing...like...like on the lips?"
"Not at first...but...in time."
She shifted and pulled her hand back. "Um...do...do we have to...you know..."
"No!" he said quickly, knowing what she was talking about. "No, of course not."
She took a deep breath then nodded with a smile. "Alright. I'll be your girlfriend."
His smile widened and he took her hand once more. "And I'll be your boyfriend."
Her hand tightened on his a moment before she stood and placed a kiss on his cheek. She took their plates to the kitchen and started cleaning them. While she was washing the dishes, he went and got his clothes ready for tomorrow, learning today that he was far too tired to even think straight in the morning. After which, he walked up behind her and wrapped his arms around her, feeling her heat against him. She jumped and a plate snapped in her hands.
"Whoa! Hayden, are you alright!?"
She laughed nervously. "Y-yeah...you...you just scared me..." she whispered and threw the plate away.
His arms fell from her sides and he moved over to sit on the counter. "I'm sorry, if I scared you."
"It's not your fault," she said softly. She put the dishes away and wiped the counter off.
"Yeah, but still I should have known better."
"Let's just not talk about it anymore," she smiled and took a deep breath.
"Alright. Ready for bed?"
She nodded and pulled the covers back on their bed. "Could you patch me up again?"
"Yeah, of course," he said, hopping off the counter and crawling in bed with her. She pulled her nightgown down slightly and passed him the first aid kit. After he pulled off her bandage, he examined the wound and frowned. "It looks like there might be a bit of infection," he whispered, his eyes flicking up to her. "I need to see this in better light."
Her eyes grew big. "I knew I shouldn't have spent all that time lifting plates..."
He pulled her up and pulled her to the kitchen which had the best lights. Taking a seat, he urged her to sit on the table and lean toward him. "I need you to lower your night gown some more. I swear it looks like its spreading." She frowned and slowly pulled her nightgown lower. He swallowed hard as part of her breast was revealed. Pulling out one of the wipes, he ran it over her wound slowly. "You need to take it easy. You're pulling at it too much."
"I don't have a choice..." she said and winced. "Ouch..."
"Sorry." Once he was through, he bandaged her back up, this time, however, he leaned forward and kissed her bandage. "To make it heal...."
She blushed and quickly pulled her nightgown back up. "Thank you."
"You're welcome." Stifling a yawn, he stood and helped her off the table. "Now can we go to bed?" She nodded and crawled back under the covers. He joined her, moving against her and holding his arm out for her. With a yawn, she rested on his chest the way she had grown so fond of. "Goodnight," he whispered, kissing the top of her head. She moaned softly into his chest and moved closer.
He shifted when she moved, more and more of her body rested on top of him, including one of her legs now which rested over his. Slipping his arm around her, he allowed himself a moment of pure blissful thinking before trying to fall asleep.
"Bob? He's over on in the main building," the man replied.
Sai nodded, guessing that the main building was the larger version of all the smaller buildings. They moved past the men, snow, and everything just to get to it. Once they were there, they dusted the snow off themselves, trying to find this Bob person.
