In the morning, when she woke, he was gone and there was a knock on the door telling her to come down for her shirt. She dressed, pulled her hair back, and went down stairs. All morning, she tried not to use her arm that often.
"You can carry more than one plate, sweetheart. You have two hands," Donna said as she pushed another plate to her. "You running back and forth like this is making me tired."
"Sorry...I...um...I...my arm just hurts today," she nodded.
"You might have pulled something yesterday. Then you are right to take it a bit easy. Just don't over work yourself. You tell those men that you only got two legs and if they can't be nice they can sure as hell find another place to eat the best pancakes in all the world," she snapped.
Hayden smiled with a nod.
At lunchtime, the men from the logging camp came down and filled the store to the brim with all their workers. Every table was full and the place was a madhouse with all the yelling, laughing, and arguing that was going on. Rather than sit with the rest of them, Sai nodded to Hayden and pointed upstairs to their room with a wink. She smiled but shook her head. She couldn't leave for lunch today with all the men there. Going over to a table, she took some orders and called them out before going to the next. He frowned and sat down on the steps to their room. Since she couldn't meet him up there, all the seats were already taken leaving him without a place to sit. After getting everyone's order out she walked over to him and sat next to him. Donna finally waved her off and she pulled him upstairs with their lunch.
"About time," he grinned. "I'm starving. It been busy today? You know, aside from the fifty odd loggers sitting in there."
She nodded while chewing.
"Slow down, or you'll choke," he laughed, wincing at the movement. Taking off his coat, he reached back and rubbed his shoulder. "I'm going to be muscle bound hulk when this is over."
She laughed and smiled. "That would be different."
"Hey, I have muscles now," he pouted. "You just never see them cause I'm layered under clothes." She only smiled at him. "What's that look for?" he asked curiously, noticing the way that she'd glanced at him.
"Nothing. Just smiling."
"Okay?" Shrugging it off, he finished his meal and grudgingly got back up so that he could dressed and head back to work.
She stood with him and took his hand. "Leaving already?"
"Yeah," he sighed, his fingers slipping in hers. "I'd better go or else I'll have to walk back to work instead of riding on one of the trucks."
"Oh..." she nodded and walked down stairs with him.
Before they reached the bottom step, he leaned forward and kissed her on the cheek. "I'll see you when I get off work."
She smiled and nodded. "I'll have dinner on the table."
"And a warm bath ready?" he asked with big eyes.
"And a warm bath," she said and kissed his cheek.
He smiled at that and waved goodbye, a few men laughed at him and his 'young wife', patting him on the back as they left for work.
They were like that for two more months. The snow melted and the spring flowers were in bloom. The two of them had become like neighbors to those around them and with them only paying for food, electric, and water, they were saving more than spending which was a great thing.
"Achoo!" Sai sniffled and rubbed his nose as he got dressed. With spring there he was able to wear less clothing, but it seemed that all the work and lack of sleep had killed his immune system so he was coming down with a spring fever. Sneezing again, he groaned and grabbed some tissues to take with him. "See you after work," he mumbled as he headed outside.
"Oh no you won't. You are staying here and I'm staying to take care of you. Donna said she would tell Bob for us," she said as she stirred the soup she was making. "So get back in bed."
He started to chuckle, but instead it just came out in a cough. "But we have a big order today. I can't just not go. Any day I don't work, I don't get paid."
"That's alright. We have enough money for you to miss one day. Now back in bed," she said and pulled the covers back for him.
He wanted to pout, but a day in bed did sound really good. Stripping into something more comfortable, mainly just his night pants, he crawled back beneath the covers to rest. She fluffed his pillow for him then put a wet rag on his forehead.
"Thank you dear," he teased softly, snuggling into the pillows while trying to breath.
She only smiled and went back to the soup. When she finished with it she brought it to him. "It's suppose to be spicy to clear your sinuses."
Sitting up, he took the bowl and began to nibble on it. At first, he didn't think it was spicy at all. It wasn't really until his sinuses started to clear and he could taste things again that he realized just how spicy the thing was. "Water!" he gasped.
She laughed and handed him some water and a tissue to blow his nose.
The water seemed to be gone in an instant, and the tissues were put to good use. After he finished with his soup, he laid back and closed his eyes, his breathing somewhat better though he was still mainly breathing out of his mouth. "Thanks," he said without opening his eyes. "For taking care of me."
She brushed his hair from his face. "We have to look after each other."
He nodded, his face moving and resting against her hand. "Yeah, we do."
She waited on him all day. She made him a hot bath, soup, kept him warm when he was cold, cold when he was hot. For hours she took care of him, giving him medication that Donna had given her to give him. By the end of the day, she was on her knees by the bed, her arms folded on the side of the bed and her head resting on them. Her hand lightly griped his while they both slept.
"I'll be," Bob whispered as he peeked his head inside their room. Looking at Donna, he grinned as went back downstairs. "I thought Sai was just playing hooky today, but it seems that his little wife has taken good care of him."
"She's been doing more than taking care of him. Poor girl has been running up and down those stairs. When it got busy and he was sleeping, she came down to serve and get them out quickly so he could stay asleep. She wasn't even on the clock. Now I feel bad for not paying her for the day," Donna sighed as she pushed him some coffee and sat next to him.
"So what do you think about those kids? They seem nice and all, but you've got to wonder what they were running from," Bob said, adding some sugar and milk to his coffee.
"I'm assuming she was abused in some way because the girl jumps when someone touches her and she doesn't see them. The boy...I guess he just loved her and wanted to save her. They got married and ran as far as they could get," she said.
"I tend to agree with you, but I don't know. I've caught the boy staring off into the woods sometimes as if I think he's expecting something to come after him. Maybe they were both abused and that's how they found each other."
"Could be. Either way, they are happy here and I want to keep it that way. So don't you go tell those police men or letting your men do it. If you do you will be answering to me and the wife because you better half really likes Hayden. Comes in every morning to drink her coffee and talk to the pretty little thing," she said with a nod.
"Trust me, I know," he groaned. "She's been costing me a small fortune in tip money that she gives that girl."
"She keeps telling Hayden to go spend some of that money and get the latest fashion like those flapper girls, like your Anna in college, but Hayden just says that one day she might need that money so she saves it," she laughed.
"Don't remind me of Anna! Her mother encouraged her far too much to go off and do things, and now my baby girl is off in the arms of some military man!" He shook his head and downed the rest of his coffee. "Speaking of Anna, she and Hayden are about the same size. Perhaps I can convince her to share some of her unwanted clothes. I'm sure they would fit her."
"Well you would have to ask Hayden. The girl lives in her uniform," she laughed. "And what's this about Anna's military man? You should be proud. Military men have stable jobs and he can take care of Anna very well."
"Oh, it's not the fact that she's with a military man. It's the fact that she didn't even bring him to me before marrying him. I don't know this guy from Adam!"
"She's already married?!" Donna asked. "I'm surprised you haven't hunted him down yet." She suddenly smirked. "Anna won't give you the address will she?"
He pouted and fidgeted with his cup. "No..."
She laughed and patted his shoulder. "When she gets knocked up, she'll call you then because you can't kill him when he's got a baby to support too."
There was some scuffling upstairs and the door opened. They looked at the stars as Hayden came down. "I have to run to the store for some more spices. If he wakes up will you tell him where I am?" she asked.
"Sure thing, girly," Donna nodded.
Hayden waved to Bob and walked out.
After waving to her, he huffed at Donna's words. "Don't talk about my baby girl being knocked up. She's just a baby herself. She shouldn't even..I mean...I'll kill him if he knocks up my baby girl!"
"He's her wife! You better be expecting a little one very soon! Because when they are young, they don't think about preventions, they think about the moment," she said in a matter of fact way. She then thought a moment. "You think Hayden and Sai will be having one soon? He's always kissing her cheek and she's so excited to get off work and cook his dinner. Reminds you of the good days."
"You better hope they aren't. You'll lose a good waitress for awhile if they are planning, but they're just kids themselves," he sighed. "They should do as I did and at least wait till you turn twenty before your first kid. Best decision that Lucy and I ever made."
She smiled. "Yeah, but I think that was mostly because Lucy refused to let you do anything without protection. She told about your younger years when you kept trying to do it randomly and she would demand you go to the store for some baby prevention."
"She's a woman. I guess she can't help it," he laughed.
She smacked him. "Don't make me tell her that."
"You wouldn't dare!"
She laughed. "No I wouldn't. I actually like you being able to come over and play sometimes."
"Oh please, Donna. Lucy doesn't have that much control over me," he chuckled.
"Last week she locked you out of the house because you didn't get her roses for her birthday. I hear Henry had to set you up on his couch...which you broke."
"So it only happened one time and that was because she was on her woman time of the month," he explained. "And I fixed Henry's couch. He should be more concerned about my back. I wasn't made to fit onto something so small."
"Just admit it, Bob. That little woman has you wrapped up so tightly that you would jump and reach for the clouds if she wanted one for herself."
"That wouldn't be too hard. All I'd have to do is stand on my tip toes!"
The diner echoed with laughter and Donna filled his cup again. "Well, it's sweet. I think Sai seems to be taking after you. He's already working on the muscles and that little Hayden has him wrapped around her. Though, I don't think she realized it yet. She's not the next Lucy that's for sure. I wouldn't even mess with Lucy...she's spits fire when you get on her bad side."
"Yes, she does, and she swings a mean skillet when she wants to," he chuckled. "But they are good kids and I-"
Sai coughed as he stood on the steps. "Where...where did Hayden go to?" he asked, clearing his throat, trying to rub the soreness out of his throat.
"She went to the store. Now you go on back upstairs before she comes back and finds you out of bed," Donna said.
"I'm alright," he assured her. "I'm just a little...drowsy."
"Go to bed," Bob said. "You need your rest so you can be out there working with us tomorrow."
About that time, Hayden walked in. "Oh, Sai. Are you alright?" She carried her bags up with her and placed her hand on his forehead. "You don't have a fever..." She drug through her bag and pulled out a drink. "The man at the store said this is good for your tummy."
"Tummy?" he asked with a weak grin. Taking the drink, he looked it over. It didn't look all that appetizing.
"I think I'd best let you go, Donna. It seems that the lovers are going to need to rest more before this day is over." Standing, he left Donna a tip, winking at her before grabbing his coat. "Good luck with your...tummy, Sai." He was grinning from ear to ear at that.
"Have a good day, Mr. Bob. And tell Mrs. Lucy thank you for the spices she sent for Sai..." Hayden smiled.
"Oh I will. Take care of that husband of yours," he smiled.
She nodded and pulled Sai upstairs.
"Honestly, Hayden, I feel much better," he said once they were in their room. This was followed immediately by a sneeze and a groan. "At least, I'm feeling much better compared to what I had been feeling."
"Go on and get back in bed," she yawned and went to the kitchen. "And drink that stuff please," she smiled as she started chopping up vegetables.
He frowned and nodded, opening up the drink, he downed it as quickly as possible before groaning. "Ugh...I think that stuff just made me more sick," he muttered before crawling back in bed and curling up.
"The good stuff is not always the best tasting," she said while putting the vegetables and chicken in a pot with some water and spices.
"When you're through...come lay with me."
She glanced at him with a blush then nodded. After cooking, she brought a bowl to him and sat next to him. He sat up and ate a few bites of the soup. However, after a little bit, he set it down and curled back up, his head resting in her lap. She set the bowl aside and ran her hands through his hair.
He nuzzled her thighs, enjoying her gentle touches. "You are...quite comfy yourself."
"Just...watch your hands..."
He opened his eyes to see his hand resting on top of her thigh. "I won't do anything. I promise."
"Ok," she whispered.
His hand stayed on her thigh and didn't move an inch. His eyes grew heavy, and soon his steady breathing was caressing her legs. She yawned herself and sat there running her hands through his hair while he slept.
He shifted in his sleep, her dress moving up some as his lips pressed against her flesh. He shifted in his sleep, her dress moving up some as his lips pressed against her flesh. Sai's eyes shot open as his head was thrown down onto the bed. Rubbing his eyes and yawning, he looked around the room for her. "Hayden?" he called in a tired voice. Crawling out of bed, he doubled over and coughed some before realizing the bathroom light was on. "Hayden? What's wrong?"
"I had to pee," she said.
He nodded, though of course she couldn't see it. Crawling back in bed, he shuddered and pulled his night shirt off. He'd gone from hot to cold and now he was back at hot again. Sweating off a fever most likely. After a few minutes she came back out. Taking the bowl of soup back to the kitchen, she wet a rag and brought it over to him. She folded it and placed it over his forehead.
He closed his eyes and sighed. "You're too good to me," he smiled.
"I try," she smiled.
"Well, you succeed. You're going to make a really good wife someday." He yawned and closed his eyes as sleep began to take hold of him.
"Maybe..." she whispered and kissed his forehead.
His smile widened when she kissed him and he drifted off into a restful sleep. By morning, Hayden was asleep half on the bed and half off with him sleeping in her lap. He shifted against her, feeling her warm flesh and yawning. The thin bits of light filtering through the window told him that he was already running late. Getting up, he wiped his nose and stifled a cough before getting dressed. While she was still asleep, he shifted her body onto the bed and covered her up, kissing her forehead before hurrying off to work.
Donna woke her like always and a few minutes later, she was back down stairs. The day was busy as always and tips were good. Around lunch time one of the other waitresses tapped her on the shoulder and handed her a napkin. "One of the customs gave me this to give to you."
She looked at the napkin and instantly scanned the diner. Her eyes washed over every face frantically and she even went to the window to look at the cars. Again she looked at the words on the napkin. "Found you."
"Sai, come over here and help me with this," Bob called to the young boy.
Sai had his shirt draped around his waist so that he could keep cool. He was still a bit sluggish today, but moving around felt good after being cooped up all day. Going over to Bob, the two of them tugged and pulled on a large log, finally getting it up onto the truck. Sai's flexed his tired muscles, grinning rather proudly at how toned and tanned his skin was becoming.
"Go on and head back to the main area. Your lunch should be here soon," Bob grinned, tossing him to the keys to the truck so he could drive it back to meet his girl.
"I'm taking lunch now," Hayden said with shaking hands.
"Alright. Tell Sai I said hi," Donna waved.
Hayden nodded and went upstairs to wash her face. She went to the bathroom and took the note out. Tossing it in the toilet, she flushed it down and splashed her face with some water. After calming herself, she grabbed the food she had made for Sai and went out the back. She started towards the lumber yard but froze when she smelt a familiar cologne.
"I know I'd find you, Hay. It was only a matter of time before someone saw your pretty face and wanted the reward money," someone said behind her. She shook with fear as she turned to face him. "Now I gotta ask how you got the money to get so far away." She started to back away and his face hardened. "Don't you run, Hay. I'll make you regret it. Now you just march your pretty little ass back to that car and get the hell in."
She shook her head. "No..." she said.
"You don't tell me no!" he snapped.
She dropped the food and started to run. With a grunt of anger, her went after her. Of course, he was faster. His hand tangled in her long hair and pulled her back as she screamed. With a single back hand, she hit the ground spitting blood.
"Now do as you are told, damn it!" he said and pulled her to her feet by her hair. He drug her away while she cried and held her nose and cheek.
"You can carry more than one plate, sweetheart. You have two hands," Donna said as she pushed another plate to her. "You running back and forth like this is making me tired."
"Sorry...I...um...I...my arm just hurts today," she nodded.
