Hayden was in a fog that day. She didn't make many tips because her feet were dragging. Twice she had to be woken up from doing inventory on her second job and by the time she left for work, the walk home seemed so far away, so she stop frequently to rest on a bench.
By the time she made it home, Sai was there sitting on the bed and staring off into space. His hands were folded neatly beneath his chin, but it was clear by his face that he was deeply troubled. "How was your walk?" he asked without looking at her.
"Long..." she said softly as she put her money in the jar and sat at the table to take her shoes off. She only sat for a second before going to the kitchen to start dinner.
"Do anything interesting during your walk?"
"I sat at a few benches."
"That all?"
"I gave a homeless man a dollar...but I didn't think it was that big of a deal...he was hungry...."
"And how was work today?"
"Long." She put some things in pots and turned the stove on.
He frowned and let his eyes move to the back of her head. "And how was your second job?"
She froze. Sighing, she stirred the food. "Long."
He nodded slowly. "And the reason you felt the need to lie to me?"
"I never lied. You never asked if I had a second job."
"Don't get cute with me, Hayden. You know what I mean."
"Yes, and I didn't lie. I answered your questions honestly."
"No, you gave me half truths. You also never bothered to tell me that you were working a second job. That's the same as lying to me."
"You don't tell me things all the time! And I don't consider it lying!" she screamed. She threw the food on the floor. "I don't want to talk about this anymore! I'm tired ok! Tired!"
"Fine. Go to bed. I'm going for a walk. A real walk!"
"Don't bother! I'm not staying here!" She put her shoes back on and walked out, slamming the door. After going down the stairs she started down the road to Donna's.
"Wait! Where do you think you're going?" he yelled as he followed after her.
"Away! Far away!"
"No, you aren't. Go back home. You shouldn't be walking so much."
"And you shouldn't be asking so many questions but you do it anyway!" She sighed when she saw a bench. Walking to it, she grabbed her back and sat down with a whimper.
He moved and sat down beside her. "You okay?"
"Yeah..."
"So why didn't you tell me about your second job?" he asked, reaching out and taking her hand.
"It's a long walk and we need the money to save for the baby. You would tell me to quit."
"Yes, I would," he told her. "And you will be quitting."
"See!"
"Look at you, Hayden. You're waddling and in pain from walking. You shouldn't be walking so much to begin with. It's not good for you!"
"You don't know what is good for me..."
"I know what is good for a pregnant woman, and you are a pregnant woman."
"You know nothing about a pregnant woman."
"Then tell me about a pregnant woman."
"It sucks," she nodded.
He smirked at that and stroked her belly. "It looks like it sucks. I'm really glad I'm not a woman." She groaned and rested her back against the bench at that comment. "Come on back home, Hayden."
"That's...a very far walk."
"Then we'll rest here, or I could carry you."
"I feel fat today. So no." She sat there for a few extra minutes then started to stand.
He placed a hand on her back and helped her stand. After another minute, she was finally up. They walked back to the apartment then she looked at the food on the floor. Taking her shoes off again, she went to the kitchen and slowly got to the floor to clean it up.
"Hey, get up and let me do that," he said slowly. "It's got to be easier for me to get up and down off of the floor than it is for you."
"Yeah...but I'm already down here and you've had a long day. I'll start on something else while you take a warm bath. Want me to make it for you?"
He shook his head and got down on the ground with her. "No, I want you take one with me."
"After diner..."
"Okay," he smiled.
They cleaned the floor and he helped her up. Once again, she started on dinner. This time he sat in the kitchen and watched her waddle around the kitchen preparing their meal. Finally, she put the meal on the table and sat down.
"Just think. In four months it will be out and you'll be back to your old self."
"Yeah...and chasing it around..."
"It won't be able to walk that quickly I don't think."
"Oh, so you will be breast feeding and changing diapers?"
"Uh...sure?" She laughed.
Those four months went by a lot faster than she wanted them to. In that time, the summer had come and gone and the winter chill set in. Along with it, Sai's coughing got worse. He had been to the doctor but they only get him cough medicine and sent him home. It never worked which worried them both. Donna and Lucy had talked Hayden into having a home birth with Lucy as the mid wife. Because she was so young, they wanted to make sure she was in the best hands. And according to the town, Lucy had delivered more babies than the local hospital. The week of her due date, she and Sai stayed in Bob and Lucy's guest room.
"I still can't believe how huge you are," Bob chuckled as he watched Sai try to help her stand. "You look like you're just ready to burst with babies!"
Hayden laughed nervously at the dinner table. "We...are just hoping for one..."
"I don't know with how big you are I wouldn't be surprised if there were four or five in you."
Sai groaned as he pulled her to her feet, panting and relaxing against the wall when he was done. She glanced at him. "It's not that bad! Try carrying the weight!"
"I think I just did," he coughed.
She groaned and Lucy shot him a look. "Men. They are so cold," she snapped. Taking Hayden's hand she helped her to the stairs. "Come on sweetie. You just ignore him. I think you look radiant."
He watched as Hayden had to go sideways so that she could get through a door. Shaking his head he followed after the two women, hoping to make amends with his wife.
In the morning, like the morning before, Bob and Sai went to work and Lucy came in the check on her.
"Ouch!" Hayden screamed.
Lucy's eyes went wide as Hayden stood next to her. They were trying to pick out some clothes for her but instead, a flow of water hit the ground. They both looked at each other.
"Stay calm."
"Stay calm!?" Hayden cried as tears filled her eyes.
"Ok, you get back in bed and I'm going to call Donna and-"
"You can't leave me all alone! I don't want to be all alone!"
"It will only be for a second. Just a second. I promise. Now back to bed."
It was only an hour later when Donna showed up. She rushed up the stairs to find Hayden screaming and crying while Lucy was telling her not to push. "Have you called for Sai?" Donna asked.
"They aren't picking up."
"Should I go-"
"No! I need you here!"
"I don't want to have it yet! Tell it to stay in!" Hayden screamed. She screamed louder and Lucy looked at Donna.
"Call someone and tell them to drive to the lumber yard and get my husband and Sai!" Donna nodded and ran out of the room with Hayden screaming.
"Bob! Where is Sai?" A man yelled to his boss while talking on the phone with someone.
"Out in the northern part. Why what's up?" Bob asked.
"His wife is having their kid!"
Bob's eyes widened and he whistled loudly, telling everyone to clear out and get him a vehicle so he could get to Sai.
Hayden glanced at the clock. "Stop looking at the time, Hayden! It's not going to speed up anything! Just focus on your breathing!"
Donna slowly looked at the clock. Hayden had been in labor for five hours and still she couldn't push. She paled. She was never ever having kids.
It was during her sixth hour of labor that Bob's truck came to a stop in front of his house. Sai quickly ran up the stairs and burst through the room. His eyes took in everything in a flash and suddenly he felt like throwing up as he stared down between her legs. "Hayden?"
"Stop looking like that!" she screamed.
Donna pushed him out the room and slammed the door.
"Hey! Let me in!" Sai said. "I want to be with her!"
"You'll just stress her out. Wait with Bob!" Lucy snapped. "I said breathe, Hayden, not cry!"
Sai frowned and banged on the door. "You'll be fine Hayden! Just listen to Lucy!"
Her only response was another scream. He frowned and pushed at the door, moving past Donna he hurried to her side.
Hayden looked at him. "Tell it to wait. Just another day. I just need another day! I'm not ready!"
"Sai, please step out or I'm getting Bob to drag you out. She won't go into labor if she's stressed."
"I can calm her down," he insisted.
"Sai! Get out!"
Hayden screamed and pulled at the sheets. "Don't push yet. Just a while longer," Donna encouraged.
Sai frowned and stepped back. The women seemed...crazy. Kissing Hayden's forehead, he headed Lucy's words and left them be.
After twelve hours of Hayden screaming, Lucy told her to push. Donna stood by with hot water, blankets, and anything else Lucy needed. It was only five minutes later that Hayden pushed a baby boy out. He was passed to Donna who cleaned him and slowly walked him down stairs to Sai. She went into the living room and looked at the pale boy.
"You have a son."
"R-really?" he asked with wide eyes, staring at the small bundle that she was carrying in her arms. His heart had stopped. He knew it. Fear. Wonder. Excitement. Mainly fear. Yes. lots of fear swept over him.
She passed the baby to him and was about to say more when Lucy yelled. "Donna! Get up here!"
Donna ran back upstairs to find Hayden pushing again. Sai’s eyes shot upward when he heard Hayden scream again. What was going on? He wanted to ask, but the weight in his arms kept him from moving. He stared down at his son, a small smile on his lips. This...was his kid. He was a father.
A second later, another baby's cry ripped through the air. Hayden laid back breathing hard while Donna cleaned the baby. Lucy waited. "Do you feel like pushing anymore, Hayden?"
Hayden shook her head. They waited at least another ten minutes before Donna was allowed to leave again. She pasted the baby girl to Bob and ran back upstairs to help clean Hayden up.
"W-what? Another one?" He paled even more when he saw the baby girl. They had twins. Two kids. He was a father of twins. "You...you don't think there are anymore in her do you?"
"I'm not sure," Bob whispered as he rocked the sleeping girl in his arms.
After another thirty minutes, Hayden was cleaned and put on fresh sheets were she slept hard. She was tucked in and left to rest as the women came down stairs with a smile. "Twins. But she did very well for her first time. There wasn't much blood and no tearing. This was a very good delivery," Lucy beamed.
"What am I going to do with twins?" Sai asked, very pale and very quiet. He rocked his son in a rocking chair, but it was clear that he was staring off into outer space with the way that he was going. Two kids. They were barely going to be able to afford one.
"We'll all help," Lucy assured him. "I'll help Hayden after she gets off work. I'm a house wife anyway. And once the town finds out you have a little boy and girl, you are going to get loaded down with gifts and diapers. People love babies," she nodded."
"That's true. I love babies and I never want kids. Ever," Donna said.
"Don't tell me you got scared off after seeing your first baby born," Bob laughed.
"Shut up, Bob. It was very...icky..."
He chuckled and patted her shoulder. "Oh you get use to it after the fifth or sixth time."
"Ew..."Lucy brushed them all off. Taking the baby girl, she moved to Sai and showed him how to hold both. "I can tell you now...she's not going to be awake for a while so you need to name these babies because we can't call them baby 1 and baby 2," she smiled.
Sai shifted as he held both of his children. "I'll uh...I'll get back to you on that. We haven't really talked about names...."
"I'm sure Hayden will like any name you pick. But you really should start thinking of names. I'll need something to put on the birth certificate." He nodded slowly. Lucy patted his head. "Just know, you have me and Bob here to help until Hayden is back on her feet."
He looked up at them and gave them a small smile. "Thank you, because...I have no idea what I'm doing."
"You will in time," Bob assured him. "It's a learning experience that's for certain."
In the middle of the night, Lucy got up with the twins and had them brought to Hayden's resting body. While Hayden was fast asleep, they drank from her. Lucy explained everything she was doing to Sai as she did it. When she did one thing to one twin, she had Sai do it to the other, from burping to changing, slowly teaching him bit by bit. He didn't realize there was so much to taking care of a child. He now knew everything from how to let a child suck from her breast to how to change it. The later of which he didn't enjoy at all. He nearly died from the smell. He couched and doubled over, nearly gagging and choking.
By the time she made it home, Sai was there sitting on the bed and staring off into space. His hands were folded neatly beneath his chin, but it was clear by his face that he was deeply troubled. "How was your walk?" he asked without looking at her.
