To explain Karaka's feeling that bright friday morning into one simple word would be excitement. It was the final day and she made no attempt to hide her feeling. She rushed through breakfast and practically bounded out of the house at once. The sun shone was bright as ever, a flock of birds chirp chirp chirping away, soaring through the air. Her mind drifted back to the previous night's talk with Damien. She decided she was certainly going to aim for the joining the Mahados, no, she was going to join them. She would convince them, somehow she figured.
The clamor outside the school was heavy, even just a couple steps away from taking the first step onto the official school grounds, you could hear the mismash of conversastions bundled together like several people in a small closet looking for escape. This time when she arrived, she saw Beth, standing outside the crowd. She turned and waved.
"Hey Beth, you're here on time today. What was the hold up yesterday?" asked Karaka.
"Well at first I feigned sick so I didn't have to go and see you. Then I decided that we're so close to finishing up, that I didn't want to end things that way. So I decided it would be time more well spent if I went to school and talked things out" said Beth.
"I'm going to miss you Beth, a lot. I promise as soon as I can, I'll come visit" said Karaka.
Karaka, even with your powers, all the boy specials are going to be too much for you.
Karaka looked over at Damien talking with a group of boys. She didn't want to interfere so refrained from calling his name. The bell rang, everyone assembiling inside quickly. Karaka walked to her locker with a solemn blood flowing through her.
This is it, my last day here. No more classes, no more lunch time, no more detentions which is good. I can't say I appreciate being treated to second class education, but, I am going to miss this place a little. I'm especially going to miss running into the gym class and showing everyone up. Always a top contender for my favorite part of the day. Tomorrow though, is when I leave everything. My dad, Beth, Damien. No, I'll see them again, I'll make sure to come back and visit after I've settled into my mercenary life.
The classes were lame duck classes throughout the day. No assignments, no real work, mostly just watching movies. Movies that Karaka had no interest in. So she spent the classes without Beth sleeping. Her talks with Beth carried a heavier, more enlightening tone. Fewer words were spoekn then usual, knowing this was the end of their school life.
She of course didn't get to see much of Damien, but they weren't that close anyway. She could live with the night before being their last meeting together. Karaka and Beth, in the final class, waited in anticipation.
Tick tick tick tick.
The final bell was coming, Beth hearing Karaka gulp. Beth and Karaka looked at each other, then back at the clock. Beth was on the verge of trembiling. Karaka looked around the classroom, giving it one last look.
Buuzzzzzzzzzz
It had come, the final bell of their school lives. They were the last to leave the room, almost hesitant to step outside. Staying inside the room only delayed the inevitable, and they knew it. Stepping out, they leaned up against the wall, observing the other students going to their lockers, many who still had at least another year to go, though quite a few like them, in their last day in school.
"We may not get a chance to see eachother at the Graduation tomorrow, you know how they are. So, this could be the last time we get to talk" said Beth, choking up on those last words. Karaka kept silent. "I don't want to be alone Karaka, I don't know what to do" said Beth.
"You won't be alone Beth. You'll make other friends, I swear" said Karaka.
"Yeah, I guess. What about you? I mean, I don't know, you think even if somehow you became a Mercenary, they would be your friends? The Mercenary group we saw didn't look like they got along" said Beth. This thought ran through Karaka's mind for a short moment. She knew, she most certainly wouldn't get along with Rivora. Megro, perhaps. Jerome was the only one she didn't hold anything against.
"Let me worry about that Beth. In fact neither of us needs to worry at all. I know I can do this Beth, I swear I can do this, okay?" asked Karaka. Beth gave an uncertain nod.
"I guess that's the most I can get out of you" said Karaka with a giggle. They walked to Beth's locker first, the hall ways emptying quicker then usual. Most didn't want to stick around for any longer then necessary. Karaka held such an attitude almost every other day. Only today was the opposite end in effect. As Beth began working her lock, Karaka noticed a look of worry on her face.
"Is there something else wrong or is this the same deal?" asked Karaka.
"Karaka, without you, I'm scared. Girls wouldn't pick on me with you around, but without you I can't do anything" said Beth. Karaka smiled.
"I'll tell you what. You can hire me for a special mission, free of charge, to teach anyone who bothers you a lesson, okay?" asked Karaka. Beth smiled.
"Okay" said Beth. She got her stuff into her backpack, then once it was on her back, she followed Karaka to her locker. Looking at Karaka, beth saw a mix of excitement and depression, a paradox of emotions that made the most sense of anything for that moment.
"Let's go" said Karaka.
They travelled through the mostly empty halls. Instead of the ghost like feel, it felt more like an enchanted palace, with everything from the lockers to the windows radiating loving chakra like a stream through their bodies, flowing like the most gentle stream of water under light falls.
Stepping out, into the everyn joyful and radiant sunlight, they walked without looking back until reaching just the outside of the gates. It was after this, that they both turned around to look at the school and it's gates one last time, like watching a friend ride away in a car, never to be seen again, except that the school did not move, but it appeared to almost be waving. The school had never looked more majestic then it did at that moment.
Karaka and Beth kept silent on the walk home, until they reached just outside Karaka's house.
"Karaka, you better come back for another visit, okay?" asked Beth. Karaka gave a nod, extending her hand out, Beth doing that herself simutaneously. They shook with a tight grip, in Karaka's case holding back, then they embraced in a full out hug.
There were no more words after that, no more waves. Beth just walked away, and Karaka walked in afterwards. Anything more then that would've ruined the moment. Only when Karaka stepped inside the door, to the oh so familiar chimes, did tears well in her eyes.
