“He lied to you.”

Carly shook her head violently, hoping to push the words from her mind.

“He said you would always be together. He promised to help you. He swore he'd never hurt you. He lied.”

“He… he didn't mean to…to do this to me.”

“Stop making excuses! He is worthless. He promised to be there for you, but when things got too `real,' he left. He is a bastard who is not worth your time.”

“But…,” her voice shook, “he loves me.”

“All lies. He never loved you.”

She tried to wipe the tears from her face, but her arms were strapped down. She couldn't move, nor did she want to. She wished the nurses would bring more medicine. The voice didn't like medication. The voice would shut up once they injected her with more drugs.

“He is worthless. He was always worthless. You could do so much better.”

She wanted to strangle the voice, to silence its horrid words, but the voice came from her own mind. To kill the voice, she would have to kill herself.

She refused to travel down that road again. Not this time.

Instead, she drowned it out. She screamed at the top of her lungs, louder than she had ever screamed before. Her shrieks echoed through the halls of the ICU, alerting everyone of her presence.

Three nurses rushed in, trying to discover the source of her terrified cries. A needle sunk deep into her upper right arm, her contorted face relaxing.

“Thank you,” she whispered softly, happy to be away from the waking world.

Hopefully, her dreams would prove to be more satisfying.
