Chapter One
“Looks like rain may be coming...”
Glancing at the sky, one could tell that today would end wet and dewy. However, no one knew of what else was to come.
“Yea, maybe... Let's get going. Today is going to be fun, regardless,” spoke a deeper voice after the feminine voice that had come before. His hand entwined itself with the girl's, and gave a tight squeeze. Gently she was lead off towards the science building on the main campus.
Today both Schuyler and Marco had the day off from classes. And both had also decided they wanted to go to the campus' science exhibit. There they would find a new dinosaur display. Though the bones weren't real, they were realistic and true to the animals' sizes. Promising that the massive Tyrannosaurus Rex and Stegosaurus would be an instant hit, especially with the younger folk.
Dagger Point University, AKA DPU, was a very modern and bustle college. Having been built less than fifty years ago, things were fairly up to date and being changed everyday. It was a place of culture, science, art and free speech. Upon it being built it was the pinnacle of achievements and dreams. People from around the world flocked here to learn about today's most current techniques and ideas. State of the art, huge, high-end... In short, the place to be.
From the parking lot, Marco kept a fast pace, but kept in mind that he was pulling along someone much shorter than his six foot four frame. His hand were firm on hers. Students of every race and culture bustled pass, crossed their paths, blocked their view. (Schuyler's at least) They crossed the paved, but small street with a group of students; several of which were jabbering around on cells and head pieces. This was one of many streets that zig zagged through the university. This being the nearest one, and section off one of many enormous parking lots from several buildings. One being science museum, formally called Ole Park's Museum of Scientific Intrigue and Wonder. But who would take the time to call it that?
It wasn't a surprise that campus was teeming with people this Wednesday. There was a student body of one million. That including night students or part timers. At any given time the campus could holding one hundred thousand people. In its own rights, DPU was a city.
Having made it across the street, Marco still held the smaller hand of Schuyler. He still lead them towards the steps and front door the museum. And she obliged, and gave no resistance, but instead made sure she kept up to save from being dragged along. Looking around she noticed besides the normal explosion of college aged people, there was a ration of children. Some in uniforms, others in the scruffy clothing that kids below the age of ten tended to wear. Looking further into the distance, she noticed several yellow school buses lined up along the curb. Causing a horrible bottle neck effect for traffic. Wow, it was a shock they even made it across the street in this mess. Then again, when it came to people, a herd of them was enough to stop traffic. That was probably why Marco had moved her and himself across the street so quickly. Standing at 5'4, Sky would miss somethings considering she wasn't the tallest gal. It often cause her to frown at times when people blocked her view or had no consideration for her. But that's college for you.
“Damn, Marco... Looks like we picked the day where local elementary schools would be coming to visit,” she stated in a low voice; not really even aiming it at her boyfriend. With the current noise, she doubted her could hear her clearly or even at all.
“I know, middle schools too. My brother is probably somewhere here with his school group!” Explained the tall young man. His voice was a lot louder and boomed over the current activity. Schuyler looked on in mild shock and wonder. He must have pretty damn good hearing to be able to seek out her mumbling. A talent she hadn't noticed until now.
Adjusting her tote bags strap, Sky noticed they were nearing the building's steps. They were thick slabs of brownish marble stack in a pyramid type fashion, for the steps extended around the whole museum with the large structure setting on top. Sturdy silver railing offered support while walking up the seven steps to the tall, double, glass paned doors. Reaching them, Marco finally slowed down, and looked back at Sky. He smiled in the dorkishly cute way of his. It was lop-sided and care-free. Like everything in the world was perfect for him. The hint of white teeth were visible behind soft pink lips. He had a brilliant smile.
And Schuyler couldn't help but smile back, but it faltered slightly. “Finally! ...Everything is twice as crowded. If you knew there would be a lot of kids here, what made you pick today?” It wasn't anger that she felt, but perhaps a mild annoyance. Who would want to battle through this mess on purpose? She had no siblings, so it wasn't a shock that she had no clue that today was a field trip day for the local school district. At that moment a screeching boy ran past, bumping into her hip, but was hardly slowed. He didn't even pause to see who he ran into let alone say sorry. Sky frowned harder. She never had been a kid person. Too much hyperactivity for her... Though the hit wasn't hard, it caused her to shift her weight to the other foot. Marco noticed this, and he too made a small grimace and oddly enough looked a bit sheepish.
“I wanted you to meet my brother, actually. I know he's around her somewhere...” At that he glanced around over the crowd. “He goes to Kerrington. They have these goofy yellow and navy blue uniforms,” said Marco, still looking around. Sadly no bright yellow could be spotted. Either they weren't here yet, or have already gone inside.
“Well, let's go in. We've got a long day ahead of us...” She spoke with a mixture of anticipation and dread if such a combo is possible.
The entered the massive building. And the first thing they saw was a wicked looking T- Rex with his mouth opened in a permanent roar at the world. Even with death the beast was intimidating. The long yellowed teeth were bigger than Sky's arm and sharper than any cooking knife she'd ever used. There wasn't much time to gawk at the thing though, for Marco was already propelling her towards the front information desk. Once there he pulled out his student ID, flashed a tooth grin, and handed it to the receptionist.
“I have two passes waiting here.”
It wasn't a question, and it was quite clear he was confident that they were ready to go. The lady was in her mid-forties perhaps, lean and rather athletic looking. Without commentary she handed over two laminated badges and returned Marco's ID. She flashed a smile that struck Schuyler as... Knowing. Yet again, she didn't have much time the think it over considering Marco was already slipping her away from the marbled counters and even pass the dino and a large group of younger students.
As they walked he held up a pass, indicating for her to take it. And she did, only to look it over. “How did you get these and what kind of privileges do we get?” She asked curiously and rather pleased that they had VIP stats.
“Everything,” said a cryptic Marco.
“Everything?” Sky quipped.
“Everything, and you'll just have to see. I have a nice day planned for us, don't worry,” and as soon as we find my little bro, we can start,” he spoke clearly to her, but his eyes were constantly looking around. Trying to spot the hard to miss color scheme. And it paid off, because only seconds later he straightened and smiled.
“There he goes!” Marco pointed a bit at a group of students, specifically boys who looked like a swarm of... Bees? Schuyler snorted into the back of her hand at their outfits. Whoever designed had to have known what he or she had created.
“Justin!” Rumbled Marco. Gods, how did someone naturally get a voice that deep. At times it could pass for a growl. But it made him so fucking sexy...
Schuyler put on her pleasant face, though her stomach did a small flip-flop. Meeting the family, even a younger sibling was a nervous experience.
From the group, one of the taller youths glanced up and broke away. The first thing Sky noticed about him where his eyes. Large, piercing, golden hued eyes. Nothing like she could recall ever seeing. They looked to Marco, but then locked sharply on her. It was like they saw too much, and Schuyler felt like a deer in headlights. Unable to turn away and exposed. He was coming forward. His lips curled into a smile that reminded her again of a predator. He strolled right over to them. His hands shoved in his pocket with a laid back ease, as if he had no cares.
“And what have we here, big brother?” His voice... Not as deep as Marco's, but still oddly deep for someone his age. How old was he? Probably about thirteen? Nonetheless, he sounded more mature than expected. Though nothing about this kid was childish. He was even taller than Sky, only towered over by his own brother. Tall genes must be a driving force in this family.
“Schuyler, this is Justin. Justin, this is Schuyler,” Marco introduced the two with obvious enthusiasm. It was apparent he wanted things to work and go smoothly. And was quite happy with these meeting, like it was a milestone.
The petite girl waved and manage to pull the spell his gaze caused off of her. “Hey, nice meeting you. You look a lot like your brother...” She said a bit lamely.
“That usually happens when people are related,” the teen stated with a smirk.
Marco opened his mouth to comment, but was cut off by Sky. “Don't be such a smart ass, can't help being nervous!” Her mouth snapped shut as her cheeks started to pink in embarrassment.
Justin's eyes widened in shock, and for a second he said nothing. The shock wore away to his normal features, but this time he seemed less predator and more welcoming. “Hm, so you have a bit of a backbone... And are pretty damn honest too. Nice meeting you too, Schuyler.” This time he gave an honest smile. But it didn't outshine the grin plastered across his brother's face. Justin turned towards him.
“So she's the one, huh? When are you going to do it?” He spoke as if she wasn't there, and immediately Marco's features darkened to a frown. With a quick hand, he slapped the back of his younger brother's head.
“Dude, shut up!” Justin made a hissing noise, obviously not enjoying the discomfort. But he remained silent. “We've gotta go... I'll see you later at dinner,” said Marco in a bit of a sullen way. They didn't even wait for much of a response. The tall college student was already moving away with Schuyler's hand grasped tightly in his large one. She could totally tell today would be an odd day.
“What did he mean by 'When are you going to do it?'? Do what?” Though she asked, she had a feeling she wasn't going to get a straight answer.
“Justin is just running at the mouth. Ignore him,” he tugged her towards and exhibit about the ancient Mayas. Schuyler only frowned. She hated secrets, she hated how he boyfriend was acting, and she totally didn't like that anxious feeling in the pit of her stomach.
“Let's just enjoy the day...” Said he.
“Alright,” said she.
And that's what they did. Or at least tried to do...
