Chapter 4
Why Did You Have to Leave?

“Tai-Li, come here. I want to show you something.” A soft voice called as a small boy ran over.

“Yes mother? Tai-Li said as he crawled onto to his mother's bed.

A delicate woman smiled gently down at her only son. Her face lightly pale and her cheeks lightly flushed. She had green eyes and long flowing brunette hair tied up behind her. She gently rested a small hand on her stomach and gently pulled Tai-Li to her with her free arm.

“Do you want to feel the baby kick?” She asked softly as Tai-Li brightly smiled and crawled down towards his mother's waist and placed his hand where Lady Kay had placed her hand. “Do you feel it?”

“Wow…does it hurt mama?” Tai-Li asked looking up at his mother and feeling the baby kick again.

“It doesn't hurt Li.” She smiled softly and gently placed her hand on his cheek.

A gentle knock was heard from the door as it slowly opened. A tall man, young and vibrant, slowly peaked his head in. “May I come in?” The blond asked.

“Of course dear.” Lady Kay smiled softly.

“Father! The baby is kicking mommy…tell it to stop.” Tai-Li pouted as he crawled towards the end of the bed.

“Stop your pouting Tai-Li. The baby will kick if we tell it to stop or not. Just like you kicked when you were inside of your mother.” His tone was stern but his face was gentle as he gently ruffled his son's hair and passed by. He knelt by the side of the bed and gently kissed Lady Kay's cheek.

“Are you feeling well today?” Master Kay asked, soon taking a seat on the corner of the bed by his wife.

“I am well enough. The baby will not be harmed.” She gently chuckled as Tai-Li turned around and bounced gently on the bed.

“Tai-Li, stop bouncing, you'll make your mother sick.” Master Kay warned.

“Alright…” Tai-Li said as he stopped bouncing and sat at his mother's feat. “I'm just excited, I want the baby to be born!”

“A beautiful daughter, that is what she'll be.” Master Kay sighed happily.

“Please do not get your hopes up, I can not promise you a daughter.” Lady Kay said softly.

“You will have to worry not my dear Siren, the child will be a daughter, and soon the arrangement of marriage will be set when she turns eighteen. The Kay Family name will live for many more generations to come.” Master Kay said in high hopes.

“Please Eliot…I am afraid that you may be disappointed if the child is not a daughter as you so highly hope.” Lady Kay said softly, gently placing her hand on her husband's cheek.

“Nonsense my dear. The child will be a girl. If not, we will try again. We will receive our daughter, and the family line will continue.” Master Kay rose from his seat. “I will return later, I have work to attend to.” He bowed to his wife and swiftly left, his mind would not be changed.

Tai-Li lay next to his mother and closed his eyes, quietly napping after his father had left. A few hours had passed before Tai-Li woke. He was pulled from the bed and quickly ushered outside. He turned back towards his mother to see what was going on and he saw her in tears, a nurse holding towels, and a man washing his hands. He lost sight of his mother as soon as the doors shut and he grabbed onto the handle and pulled. The doors would not open.

“Mama? Mama!” Tai-Li began to bang on the door, not knowing what was going on.

He soon sat, being ignored. He heard a strange noise from the room several hours later and stood, pressing his ear hard against the door to try and figure out what the noise could be. He fell forward as the door opened finally. He didn't waist anytime rising to his knees and crawled quickly between the woman's legs that was leaving. He crawled over to the bed and crawled onto it.

“Mama? What's going on?” Tai-Li asked crawling towards his mother.

She cried softly and opened her eyes slowly looking at Tai-Li.

“I'm sorry Tai-Li…I'm so sorry…” She gently leaned forward and kissed his cheek before collapsing on him.

“Mama? Mama!” Tai-Li yelled shaking his mother gently. He felt his middle being pulled and he was lifted from the bed. “What's wrong with Mama!” He yelled.

“There is nothing you can do…” The man said.

“What?” Tai-Li didn't understand. “What's wrong with Mama!”

“Your mother…she suffered strain, and was very ill before she gave birth.” The man went on but nothing made sense to Tai-Li. He ran past the man, after he wormed his way out of his grip, and ran up to the side of the bed. “Mama! Wake up! What's wrong Mama! MAMA!” He cried nothing being able to wake the woman.

The young woman who had left moments ago returned with a clean sheet. She approached the bed as the doctor moved Tai-Li aside and laid Lady Kay back on her pillow. He closed her eyes and pulled the sheet over her, looking away as he covered her.

“What's wrong with my mom!” Tai-Li cried.

“You're mother is gone.” The nurse said, almost in tears.

“No she isn't! She's right here! I saw her!” Tai-Li yelled.

“She's dead Tai-Li. Your mother has died. The strain of giving birth was to much for her.” The man said.

Tai-Li looked up and then looked back at his mother's covered body.

“Mama?” He said softly before turning, hearing the unfamiliar sound he heard through the door.

He slowly walked towards the woman who stood over the water basin. She turned around slowly holding a tiny being. She had wrapped it in a warm cloth and laid it down in a small bassinet.

“What's that?” Tai-Li asked, distracted for the time being.

“This is your little brother, Tai-Shi.” The woman said softly.

“Go inform Master Kay what has happened.” The man said leaving the room. “After you inform him, tell him he will find me in the conference room.”

A young girl turned and followed, heading off in the opposite direction and closed the door behind her.

“Tai-Shi?” Tai-Li asked peering into the bassinet and looking at the young being before him.

“Yes, he is your little brother. He is the baby that was in your mommy.” She said.

“He kicked mama?” He asked looking up then looking at his mother.

The woman nodded and looked down at Tai-Li. She sighed and looked up to his mother and then outside at the dark sky. He will not understand the meaning of death until he is a little older. Having his mother die on him…he will never understand what has happened until he has grown…

Tai-Shi had calmed down and had drifted off to sleep as Tai-Li stared down at him. Moments latter Master Kay burst through the door, waking the small child. The frighten cries of the newborn son rang out through the room with the clash of the door. Master Kay glanced over at the bed where his wife laid. He sighed deeply before his concentration was caught by the sound of his son.

“Father, you woke Tai-Shi.” Tai-Li said.

“Tai-Li, that boy, you are not to associate with him. He has brought an end to this Clan. Tai-Li, you were to be my successor. Our family was to stay pure throughout the years. You must up hold the Kay Clan code. There will be no blood that is not of the Kay Clan in our veins.” He paused looking down at the crying baby. “Our blood line has ended with that abomination.” Master Kay turned from the boy and turned to the woman behind him, “You are to treat this as a dog. No better then an animal. Feed him scraps and he is to not be included with family traditions.” Master Kay left the room as quickly as he had entered. Tai-Li was confused and watched the servant slowly turn to the newborn and sigh deeply.

“A victim that is what you are. Before your mother passed, she wept, knowing your father's cruel words. She knew of the life you would endure. If only you were born a daughter, your father would have accepted you.” She gently picked up the blond haired child with brilliant light blue eyes and let him feed from her bosom.

Tai-Li walked over towards the woman and Tai-Shi, and stood by the side of the chair. He watched, with a smile, his brother feed and leaned against the arm of the chair.

“Young master, please treat your brother well. For when he grows older, only you would be able to show him kindness.” She said as Tai-Shi began to cry once again.

Tai-Li gently reached over and lightly wrapped his index finger in his little brother's small left hand. He smiled gently as he saw his little brother look at him for the first time with his light blue eyes.

“Hello Tai-Shi Kay, don't worry. I'll take care of you from now on. Even if father forbids it, it is my duty to stay by your side.” Tai-Li said as he kissed his little brother's cheek.

Tai-Li smiled up at the woman who returned his smile softly and placed the new born back into his bassinet and slowly left the room, leaving Tai-Li and Tai-Shi alone.

Author's Note: Another chapter in one night…I guess I couldn't help myself. This chapter is the shortest of them all, but I guess I wanted to introduce their mother. If you haven't caught on, Tai-Shi looks like his father, and Tai-Li looks like his mother. Having a son that was meant to be a girl look like him…that didn't turn over well with Master Kay, and has an even deeper loathing for Tai-Shi as he grows. I know I really haven't been using as much color descriptions as I should be…but I really haven't needed to use them now. Later I will. I hope to see you soon in Chapter 5.
