Original Stories Fan Fiction ❯ Broken Promises ❯ Chapter 1
[ P - Pre-Teen ]
Water crashed into the rocks, the sea spray misting around them as they stood there. The angry wind picked up, and I watched this scene unravel before my eyes. I knew I should be angry, furious even that she was in his arms when it was my place. She had stolen my warmth from me, and I felt nothing for it. No anger, no pain, no pity. I watched as he held her, promising her the same things had had promised me. It was inevitable, but it wasn’t right. I knew that he had seen me, and that this act was all for me. Their animation was all for my benefit. This show was to break me apart from within.
My lips trembled as I looked upon them, walking towards them slowly. Rain began to pelt down, the heavens shedding tears for what I was incapable. My fingers touched my lips as I saw my best friend and the man I had devoted everything to touch lips, not for the first time. And yet, even as I watched, I could not be angered, nor would any tear streak down my face as he planted the seed of betrayal deep within my shattered being. I felt numb as I approached them. She turned, shocked, and looked at me. Had she heard my approach? I didn’t understand the quick pace of her heart, the way her blood boiled under her skin as her pulse quickened. She was afraid, but of what?
“Alicia…” She whispered, her eyes wide. I looked at her lips as she called my name, but immediately wished I hadn’t I could still feel nothing, even as I looked upon them on quivering limbs. I closed my eyes, and then looked to the angry sky as the wind swept through my hair, and the strands danced with the wind for what I realized would be the last time. I knew the fear in her eyes as she had said my name, knew it because I had once lived it. But not now, not now as the clouds crashed together and she whimpered. I was now just as hollow as I was meant to be, as dead as I soon would be. He said nothing, but I knew he was smug. I took in a deep breath.
“No… It’s okay. I think I’m happy for you.” I said softly. I thought for a moment, and then nodded, confirming my words. On the outside, I looked trusting, okay with it. On the inside I was crumbling underneath my fallen walls. I walked passed them to the edge of the cliff, staring over into the water. I knew he had just played me, just as I knew he would play her. I knew that the world needed change, and the wind sang in grief for what it desired. I cast them one last fleeting look.
“I’m happy for you.”I murmured. I took the last step, and was engulfed in the water’s churning tides.
