A Bunny for Bunny
Bunny's not looking so happy lately. Clint didn't understand why.
“What's wrong, Bunny-san?” he asked. She shook her head at him.
“Nothing,” she lied at first. Clint put his arm around her on the couch. She didn't look up.
“Bunny,” the priest said. “Come on, I don't like seeing you like this. Talk to me.” His woman looked down at her lap.
“Well… it's not much,” she said. “I'm just…” The woman threw up her hands.
“I'm just a bit bored here,” she said at last. Clint raised an eyebrow at her.
“What do you mean?” he asked. His woman dropped her shoulders.
“I have no one to talk to,” she said. “Who would want to talk to someone like me?”
“Clare and I would.”
Bunny shook her head. “I know. But, I meant other people.”
“Ah.”
Bunny sighed. “I just don't have much to do.”
Clint rubbed on her back. “There, there. I'll think of something.” Empty phrase, or is it? Time for some help.
Clare sat in her guest room, watching sumo videos on her laptop.
“Yeah!” she cheered. “Get him!” There came a knock on her door.
“Yeah?” the girl asked.
“Can we talk for a moment?” Clint asked. Clare hit pause.
“What is it, Uncle?” she asked. The door opened she tried around. Clint stood in the doorway. Clare noticed his face.
“What's the matter?” she asked. The priest shuffled his feet for a moment. How to word this?
“It's Bunny,” he said. Clare looked on at him.
“What about her?”
“Well… she's lonely.”
Clare grinned at him. “Ooo! Really now?”
The priest shook his head. “Not like that.”
Her face dropped. “Oh.”
“She doesn't have many friends and I want to help her.”
Clare thought about that for a moment. “Hm…” She glanced up at her uncle.
“Get her a pet.”
Clint blinked at her. “What?”
His niece shrugged at him. “Why not?”
“But what?”
“I don't know. Just anything.”
Clint thought about that for a moment. He nodded at last.
“Alright,” he said. And so, the pet hunt began. Clint decided to start small. Dogs and cats were too much work. Plus, he didn't want a mess in the house.
Right, Clint thought. He knew exactly where to go. Chi Hunt dealt with small pets. The priest hurried inside as the door chimes tinkled when the door opened. The store had just opened for the day as well. So, not many people around this morning. Clint felt himself smile.
Perfect. The priest began his search. What type of pet to get? A bird? That would be annoying. Mice? Clint winced at the hassle. If one of those got loose… He shook his head. Maybe not. A fish? Now that's a thought. That's when he saw him.
Small. Fur darker than night. Tiny blue eyes. This rabbit only had to be a baby. Clint tried not to look at the little bunny. She wouldn't want that, he thought. Not after what all she went through in the slave trades. But yet, the bunny looked so cute. Clint tried to go to the fish section. That lasted for… five seconds. It started with circling. Then came the long peeks. Finally, Clint broke down, knelt down, and looked into the cage. The little baby bunny roamed its fake grassy background. Clint gave the bunny a little smile.
“Hey little fella,” he said. “You look lonely too, just like a woman who so close to me.” The bunny only glanced at him. The priest felt his heart warming up in his chest.
“Hey, I know,” he whispered. “Why don't I take you home with me? Yeah? You like that?” The bunny just walked around in its cage. That settled it.
“Excuse me, sir!” the priest said to the clerk at the front desk as he stood up. “I'm ready to buy!” In ten minutes, Clint was out the door with the new bunny. Fine and simple, right? Hang on.
By lunch, Clint made it home.
“Bunny!” he called in the doorway. “I'm home! I brought you a present!” Bunny peeked into the living room from the study.
“Hm?” she asked. The priest walked into the living room, grinning in triumph.
“Take a look!” he said as he held up the cage. Bunny raised an eyebrow at him.
“A cage?” she asked. “That's my present?”
“No,” he said. “It's a bun--” But when turned to look at the gift, his face suddenly dropped.
“Shit,” he mumbled.
“What's wrong?” Bunny asked. The priest turned back to her. He let out an exasperated moan.
“I bought you a pet rabbit this morning and now he's gone!” he complained.
“You bought me a pet?”
He groaned again. “Yes!”
“But why?”
“You said you were lonely. So, I thought a pet would cheer you up.”
Bunny's eyes softened in delight. “Really?”
“Yes, now I lost him. I screwed up there. I am so sorry.”
She shook her head. “That was very sweet of you. It's okay. We'll go and find him together.”
Clint only stared at her. “Thanks… I guess…”
The woman only smiled at him. She kissed him on the cheek.
“Now come on,” Bunny said. “We have a present to find.” She headed into the living room. Clint stared at her back. Then, Bunny paused at the doorway.
“Uh…” she said. “Could you lead the way? I don't know where you went today.”
“Huh?” the priest asked at first. Then, he quickly nodded.
“Yeah, yeah, sure. Of course,” he said. Then, the man headed out the door with his woman following close behind.
