Club Attack
Friday night. Club 75 began its usual party night. Tom loitered the entrance with a cigarette hanging out of his mouth. Only seven o'clock. Show started at nine. Damn it, he thought. It does not feel like seven. So why was he at Club 75? Kira's debt was tonight. He wasn't fully interested, just curious. Okay, maybe a little support. A little.
Tom looked at the sky. The sun had long disappeared. It hadn't gotten dark just yet.
Inside, Kira sat at her mirror in the dressing room. This is not me, she thought. Black lace. Green shimmery satin. Black pearls. Even the black feathers in her hair didn't feel right. Kira sighed.
Right…
Like her mother would ever listen. It's all about the money. Money. That's all her mom ever cared about. That and men. And sex. Did Kira even fit in the equation? Well... Maybe the money part.
Her thoughts were distracted by a knock on the door.
“Yes?” Kira asked, not looking up.
“You're on in five minutes!” the manager yelled. Kira breathed in through her nose. The make-up felt heavy on her face. Maybe that's why she was breathing heavy.
“Fine,” she said. “I'll be out in a minute.” The Carson Girl sighed as she sighed as she heard the footsteps walk away. Kira puffed up her cheeks.
Show time…, she thought.
At 8:45, the Club 75 doors were opened. All of the men flowed inside. Tom lingered towards the back. His cigarette hung loosely in his mouth still.
Bout time!, he thought. Then, someone tapped him on the shoulder. Tom glanced to the side. The door man looked at him with big eyes. Tom blinked.
“What?” he asked.
“There is no smoking until ten,” the door man said. Tom just looked at him.
“Whatever,” he mumbled. The man stubbed out his cigarette against the building and went inside.
So dim inside. The lights hadn't gone up yet. Tom took a seat near the stage. He looked around. Mostly men in the audience tonight. What did he expect? Women never went here. Honest women at least. What did it matter? He wasn't here for them anyway. Tom waved his arm in the air.
“Drink!” he said to the waitress. That's one chuhai to kick off the night. At nine o'clock, the stage lights shot on bright. All eyes to the front. The manager walked out on stage. He cleared his throat.
“Good evening,” he greeted the crowd. “Welcome, welcome! We all have a tasty morsel for you all tonight.” The crowd shouted wildly. The manager tried to calm them down again. Took them long enough. The manager smiled again.
“And now,” he said. “Presenting Watanabe Kira!” Cheers filled the stepped out on stage as if walking to the guillotine. Can't turn back now. She walked over to the mic.
“Sing baby!” one man yelled.
“Maybe she should take off her dress!” another man yelled. A roar of laugher ripped through the crowd at that comment. Kira glared at the audience. This pushed her to start singing. Tome sat over his drink and listened. Kira had a big voice for one so young. It was as if she had channeled Mae West and Billie Holiday. He smiled to himself.
She actually sounds good, he thought. Kira's song floated into the minds of the patrons. But then, it all turned sour.
One guy crawled onto the stage to her. Kira tried to ignore him and keep singing. The notes grew louder and higher. She nearly began shouting the lyrics until…
Latch! Kira jerked her head downwards. The creep had grabbed onto her ankle. Kira tried to shake him off.
“Hey!” she cried. “Get off! I'm trying to sing a song here! Damn it! Damn it!” The guy wouldn't let up. He started to crawl up on her and tried to pushed her down to the stage.
“Get off!!!” she screamed. The man did the opposite and tried to rip off her dress.
“No!!!” Kira cried. “Get off of me!” The guys in the crowd cried out for more.
“Help!” Kira cried in vein. “Somebody help me!” Tom rushed forward to her aid. As he snatched her up from the man, a riot broke out with shouting and throwing of mugs and chairs.
Kira realized she was outside when she felt her body slam up against the brick wall in the alley. She shut her eyes and cried in misery.
“Please don't rape me!” she cried. “I'll give my money, but please don't hurt me!” She stopped talking when she heard chuckling in the dark. Kira opened her eyes to see Tom standing before her, smiling.
“It's only me,” he said. Kira blinked at him.
“Tom?” she asked. “Why are you here?” He only smiled at her.
“You alright?” he asked.
“Yeah,” Kira said quickly with a nod. Tom held out his hand.
“Come on,' he said. “I'll take you to get some coffee.” Kira hesitated for a long moment before taking his hand. He led her out of the alley and into the bright city lights.
