Damn I had trouble with this one, especially the song.
I wrote in like 4 sets of lyrics before I made up my mind, and I'm still not happy with it XD It was originally going to be Points of Authority (Linkin Park), but I've already used a LP song in this fic so I figured I'd give it a rest =p Even though Bring Me To Life is apparently feat. Linkin Park <.<
They say it, but it looks nothing like them in the film clip. Ah well.

How can you see into my eyes,
like open doors?
like open doors?
The harsh echo of the slamming door bounced off the walls of his mind long after she had left. He had never wanted anything more, to have the psychic abilities to vaporize the blonde behind him, turn her to dust, make it so she never existed. But he didn't. And because of that, Rei was gone again.
And he made her cry.
Again.
He had gone ahead and fucked some floozy from a bar. Broke their bond forged over a decade of trust, lacerated their vows of holy matrimony. He was a murderer. The blood stained his shaking hands. Traitor.
Fucking traitor.
Leading you down into my core
where I've become so numb
where I've become so numb
Every single hair on his body stood at attention when he felt her arms snake around his body. Those arms...didn't belong to Rei. They were cold and pale in comparison, the skin was rough and it irritated his skin, so used to Rei's heavenly touch. But Rei was gone now, because of his mistakes, and this was his reward. The arms suffocated him, enfolded around him resembling a vice, even though, in reality, her arms loosely hung.
Rei.
“Your wife?” Her voice was sultry in his ear; her freezing breath was against his neck. He offered her the slightest of nods, but his gaze was fixed on the door. His eyes slowly went to the kitchen bench beside it, and to the pen and papers strewn out on its surface. Her limbs were like snakes, slowly but surely wrapping around his neck, intent on squeezing the life out of him.
Don't touch me...
Without a soul...
my spirit's sleeping somewhere cold
my spirit's sleeping somewhere cold
His body went rigid when he felt her icy tongue touch his ear, clenched his mouth shut to keep from vomiting. He could feel the bile rising regardless, and goosebumbs uncomfortably prickled his skin. He couldn't stand having her around; he could no longer take pleasure in imagining her as Rei.
“Get out.” It was simple, it was cold.
It was the tone she was used to. She understood what he felt. Men who cheated on their wives...there were too many. Why did she always pick the married ones, anyway? They got nothing at home, had lost interest or wanted revenge. She wondered absently, what was his story? Why did he cheat on his wife? Why had he slept with her, when he so obviously wanted his `Rei'?
Until you find it there
And lead it back home
Revenge, then.
The snakes retreated from his body, the chills creeping from his skin. The bile went back down, leaving a sting in his throat, and his body relaxed greatly. She was no longer near him. He stood there still, and could hear her collecting her clothes from his room and around the apartment. He understood the anger he sensed from her, the feeling of being used and discarded like a cheap object. But hey, he had gotten good at hurting people, and he was on a roll. She left Satoru alone in his apartment, sparing no sympathy for him or his wife; it wasn't her fault, he shouldn't have slept with another woman in the first place.
He was still staring at the papers on the bench after the door was slammed a second time that evening, paying no mind to the downtrodden woman from the bar, whose name he would never care to know. Messy ink marked Rei's signature in the box beside his, tears distorted the words. She hadn't signed them in the first place...she hadn't wanted a divorce. They had made up, forgiven each other, everything had been right again. But then she came into the room and ruined everything.
No.
No.
Wake me up
wake me up inside
wake me up inside
It's your fault, Sato, you ruined everything.
The walls of the room seemed to be drawing closer and closer, as if he had plastered extra layers of wallpaper on them. The space seemed to press in on him, that pressure of a thousand crushing atmospheres was upon him again. The signed and sealed divorce documents hammered at him from the bench, pinning him to reality with a rusty nail through his heart. What could he do now? He expected to have had more choices, but from this point, he found he only had two.
One of them involved Agate Bridge.
*
The streets were dark, but not silent. People still walked around, but this suburbia on the outskirts of Tokyo wasn't crowded like its titanic neighbor. A light drizzle of rain wet the roads and footpaths, slid down the windows of the tightly packed residences and pecked at the puddles that were strewn about. So it was dark and relatively quiet outside, most people avoiding the darkness and the rain.
I can't wake up
wake me up inside
wake me up inside
He absently recalled a horror story he had read when he was a child. It was the shortest horror story ever written. He vaguely recalled it went something like this:
The last man on earth sat in a room.
There came a knock at the door.
There came a knock at the door.
He was disturbed suddenly when he heard a knock at his door.
He put down his green tea, having grown a liking to it during his stay in Japan, and made himself decent in the mirror by the entrance. Who would be visiting him in this weather, at this hour? It's not like he had a girlfriend or anything...he sighed. He was still hurting from his last encounter with the opposite sex. But there she was, when he opened the door, a sad expression on her face and dripping with water.
“Rei?”
Save me
call my name and save me from the dark
call my name and save me from the dark
He grabbed a coat from the hook by the door and wrapped it around her shivering form. What the hell was she doing here? He noticed she was a bit out of breath and her skin was flushed. Was she running? What were you running from, Rei? Who? He stepped outside onto the small landing at the top of a short block of stairs to join her. The rain didn't quite reach them, thanks to the small cover over his door. He didn't want to push his luck by inviting her inside.
“What happened? What are you doing here?” His golden-brown eyes looked worried, his brow furrowed and lines marred his porcelain skin. He was taken aback when she threw herself into his arms, his mind reeling for some grasp on reality. Her hands tightly clenched the material of his clothing at his shoulders, and all he could do was wrap her in his secure grasp. “What did he do?”
Angry. Jealous. Possessive.
Bid my blood to run
before I come undone
before I come undone
She heard them all rumbling in his low voice, no longer like sweet honey. Everything she so secretly desired, but never got from Satoru. She knew what she was doing was wrong. But it was the only way she could think of to get back at him. Get back at him? Show him how much he hurt you. But do I really want to hurt him back?
Haven't you hurt him enough, Rei?
“Hasn't he hurt you enough, Rei?” His voice pulled her from her schizophrenic thoughts. She could hear the rain again, the soft sounds coming from the homes. She heard televisions blaring, dinner dishes clattering about. They were comforting sounds, the sounds of family.
“Zack...”
“Tell me what happened...please?” He really liked this girl; he needed to know if he still stood a chance. He loosened his hold on her waist and let her pull away to talk.
Save me
save me from the nothing I've become
save me from the nothing I've become
“H-he was...” What the hell was she thinking? If Satoru slept with another woman because he saw her with another man, then weren't they `even'? The vicious cycle would never end if they kept getting back at one another. This was wrong. She needed to go back and talk to her husband. But what if...
What if that blonde was still there? What if they were...doing it... as she walked into the room? Pain and anger raged within her at the mental image, and the warmth of Zack's arms around her suddenly felt like a much better option.
“Go on,” Her long pause was worrying him, and as much as he wanted her to be having second thoughts about her marriage, he still wanted her to be happy.
“He's been having sex with another woman...”
“What?! For how long?” That bastard...
All this time,
I cant believe I couldn't see
I cant believe I couldn't see
“I don't know. I don't want to think about it...I just...” She snuggled into his hold again, but deep down it didn't make her feel any better. She didn't know what would make her feel better. She felt guilty in Zack's arms, felt angry in Satoru's, her heart was torn a thousand ways.
She wished her dad was here. But what would he say? Forget about the wimp and marry Zack? That wouldn't make anything better. The only thing that would make it all better would be if her dad told her to forget about Zack and make things right with her husband. It pained her to know that it would, by no means, happen. He would never say that, and it hurt so much.
“Shh...It's okay,” He rubbed her back soothingly and she realized that she had been crying again. Stop crying, Rei. “You've cried enough.”
Kept in the dark,
but you were there in front of me
but you were there in front of me
“I can't do this...” He held her tighter when she tried to push away. “I'm no better than Sato if I just come running to you.”
“You aren't cheating on him, though.” Zack figured that cheating meant they needed to have slept together. This wasn't classified as cheating...was it?
“But I did! I gave up on him! I'm doing it now, damnit! I'm such a...a...”
Traitor.
“It's not your fault he's the way he is. Come on, we're getting soaked, I'll make you some hot chocolate, we can talk more inside.” His eyes showed genuine care for her, he pulled her in with open arms and an open heart. Her mind was working a thousand miles a minute, trying to tell right from wrong.
I've been sleeping a thousand years it seems
got to open my eyes to everything
got to open my eyes to everything
“I...can't, I'm sorry.” Her voice was sympathetic and she slowly pulled away from him.
“He'll just never see how truly beautiful you are, how damn lucky he is to have you.” He closed his eyes and leaned into her gratefully when she touched his cheek in thanks.
“Thank you, but I need to work this out myself.” She released a longing sigh and took a step back, ready to go, but not quite sure of where she was going. She gasped when she was abruptly pulled back to him, held flush against his body. “Zack...” He buried his face in the hair on her shoulder. Man, he had fallen hard for this one.
Without a thought, without a voice,
without a soul
without a soul
“Come inside, please...” He withdrew from her shoulder and stared into her eyes, waiting for her delayed answer. She knew what he was asking, but would she take him up on the offer? “I'll take care of you...” Rain sprinkled down and the wind blew it onto them lightly as they stared at each other. Rei's eyes were dark, a deep longing and an even deeper hurt swirling around uncertainty. He brushed a lock of silky golden hair from his vision and cupped her face with the same hand. He leaned down, to capture her sweet lips, his eyes drifting softly closed as he felt her breath on his watering mouth.
Don't let me die here
there must be something more
there must be something more
It happened too quickly.
The wind was knocked from his lungs when a sudden force pushed him violently against his front door and tore him from Rei. He heard her surprised yelp and his shoulder met the wall with a sickening crack. His frightened eyes met a furious dark blue, and his face met a fist before his vision went black.
Bring me to life
“Stay the fuck away from my wife.”
