Entry the Third
This is an original work by me, and the characters are mine. Thanks.
I woke up to a light above me, and in my eyes. I was in a room in the school, I wasn't sure which one. “What happened?” I sat up.
“Ah, your awake. Somehow, you ended up extremely exhausted. You've been like that for hours, we weren't sure what happened.” I think it was the school nurse.
“Must've been my fields. I think they drain energy from me when they get hit by something.”
“What fields? You mean the barriers the search teams couldn't pass?”
“Uh, they couldn't get past? Yeah, probably. I put one around the entirety of both schools.” I got up, feeling perfectly fine. “hey, where's my blade? It was hanging from my belt.”
“hmmm? Oh that, your friend char, uh Tarius took it. He should be in the Robotics team workshop.”
“Thanks.”
I dashed off to the workshop, to find Tar sitting in there, with my whole blade hilt disassembled. “Tar, what are you doing?”
“Hey Cor, just analyzing this thing. I think I know how to make an even better one.”
“Really? You've figured all that out in just a few hours?”
“Actually, it only took abut 1 minute. I've just been reevaluating the design and going over needed parts. I think I can cannibalize most of the parts out of one, maybe two of the Crossbows. So, what did you in?” he looked up and over at me. I was now leaning against the wall.
“My fields. They drain energy from me when or something strikes them, I believe. It might require more testing, but I'd rather not if I'm right…”
“yeah, I understand that.” He started reassembling the blade, and in about a minute or two, handed it two me. “I cleaned it for you.”
“Thanks. I'm going to check on things elsewhere.”
“You don't have to worry too much. Reggie is a really good administrator. By the way, somebody had the bright idea to select temporary leaders, probably to give those who were already running things proper authority. They selected you as the top man to get us through this. Which means you now have top authority over everyone and everything, mostly. Apparently the Student Council is trying to hold onto some power, but even there all three of us have supporters. Somebody managed to push through that they need a 3/4s majority to overrule you, me, or Reggie. I think it was Ashley.”
The fact I had been selected as the head man was rather surprising, but the fact Ashley was the one who did something to make sure the Student Council didn't interfere too much was the biggest surprise of all. She'd probably had a bare majority, and now no one had clear control. I mean, we were friends, but now the council was practically powerless.
“To put it simply, you're the President, their Congress. Anything they pass requires your approval, unless they have a 3/4s majority. Anything you do, you just need the continued support of the student body. And they've changed the name of the Student Body President to Council Chairman, probably because we have a directly elected `President' now. Good luck dealing with it.”
That made more sense. “Thanks. I'm going out. How long till you make the new one?”
“About 5 hours of uninterrupted work. Good thing the Robotics team's tools are so extensive.”
“I guess. See ya.” I left, and headed back down 400 hall and to the commons. I got there, and found Ashley helping sort boxes of food. I looked light the vending machines had been declared off limits because there were two of the bigger guys next to them. Smart thinking on someone's part. I walked on, and stopped by Ashley. “Thanks for the support.” Then I kept going. She was looking back at me with a slightly surprised, slightly warm expression.
A few hours later most everyone gathered in the Gym, so I could speak to them. “My fellow survivors, warriors, fighters, thank you for your support of me. I know I've not been the most popular of choices, I'm certainly not the handsomest, I may not even be the best.”
Somebody shouted from the senior section, “Yeah, but you stepped forward when nobody else did. And nobody else has a cool sword like that.” Danny… always surprised me, that guy.
“Thanks. I'm glad your willing to support me though, and I intend, as I said, to make sure everyone gathered here makes it out alive. There will be no casualties, no leaving a man behind. We are all equal, and we are all in this together. I am merely the one who wish to make the decisions, but if ever you don't like those decisions, I will be happy to step aside.”
I looked at them all, studying their faces, their reactions, their determination. The will, the drive, to survive, to conquer, permeated the room. I could see it in every person, in every face, every expression I studied.
“I have a request to put to you. Think of it has a sign of your trust in me. As has been indicated by the reports of our new arrivals, led by Sergeant Hikeman,” the sergeant stood and waved to identify himself, despite his military fatigues, “these creatures are not killing randomly, not most of them. They are gathering people together, herding them somewhere. I hope we might be able to find out where. Anyways, because you are asking me to lead you through this, or so I interpret it, I ask a boon of you. That I might not be linked to either my family or my friends, that they might come to no harm or increased danger simply by their connection to me, who is taking such a prominent role in resisting and fighting these anti-reptiles, these monsters, if they do indeed serve some higher intelligent power, I am going by a new name. Call me Corben Cypher. C-o-r-b-e-n C-y-p-h-e-r. Please.”
Silence followed this. Then one of the freshman, Sam, stood up. She smiled. “I'm ready Corben!”
This single statement started a veritable avalanche of similar cries, “Go Corben!” and “Three cheers for Corben!” “Corben it is!” “Corben!” A tear came to my eye, I did not brush it aside.
“Thank you all, thank you.” I waited for it to subside. “All of you who wish, you may submit an alias to be used when addressing you in public or even at all times. I am Corben Cypher at all times now. I have no other name. Thank you.”
Two days later, Charlie gave me a new blade. This one was vastly different from the high Guardian's blade, even in look. He explained all its secrets to me, and I couldn't wait to see if it did all he said. I started practicing movements with it, and with sticks, against some of the other students who planned to use the vibrating blades and knives picked up along with the crossbows.
Stanetly began educating me about the High Guardian. It was the highest warrior position out of all the orders of Reptildra, and there was only ever one at any time, who could come from any order. The High Guardian was the greatest, bravest, strongest, and wisest warrior of all Reptildra. Stanetly was a Master Guardian, the highest in his Order. I tried to give him the high Guardian's blade, because I had a new one now, but he said to me…
“Keep it, for it was a gift. I have not yet earned that Honor. Indeed, you must prove yourself as the High Guardian of your own race before you can hope to pass on the Guardianship of the Reptildra. You will, but you have not yet. The Time will arrive.” I nodded and accepted it. And that was just the beginning of interesting things for the first week we existed seemingly alone in the world.
