"A tournament..." Gnal thought out loud
"Remember? the merchant that passed by our village just under a month ago said something about the king announcing a 'challenge to warriors far and wide. A competition is being held in Dralgo to find the most noble, wise, and strongest to protect his majesty' remember?" Kitan finished trying to mimic the merchants voice.
"haha yeah I remember now, it also let the participants access to the inside of the outer walls of the castle if im not mistaken" Gnal said "I wonder what the women are like there?" he thought once again out loud
"Man is that all you think about?"
"No! I also think about...food, and my weapons...and..." Gnal said trying to cme up with a more concrete retort but that was the best he had and he gave in shortly after "whatever I'm hitting the sack, we can talk about this in the morning"
Morning came and they woke with the rising of the sun. Master Tin Dall had given them orders to spar with each other first so she could properly gauge where their skills were the strongest in. So they did the first few matches Gnal had won. Kitan had said he was just warming up and Gnal had just laughed it off. Master Tin Dall then shouted to shut their traps and fight like the fighters they had boasted so much about.
"Why is she suddenly so harsh with us?" Gnal said catching his breath while taking a break from their twentieth match.
"Because its this month that means so much to her" Kitan said in between breaths and drinking from his canteen of water. "Because its this month that determines whether or not we go to Dralgo"
"Hey ladies" she shouted "if your done dustin off your skirts, then get out here and spar with me. Just like in the village before you were beat down like flies" she finished saying with loud belly laugh. SO they put their drinks down wiped the sweat from their foreheads and walked towards their master. Kitan walked to the other end and unsheathed his weapons, Gnal did the same. She looked from Kitan then to Gnal, saw they were ready and followed suit, she pulled out a small knife with a somewhat decorated hilt. They stood in silence, waiting for someone to make a move, waiting. She made the first move by flipping it so the knife was held in a defensive way then ran towards Gnal. Kitan followed her, but at a distance. they both knew he was shadowing her and when she just a few feet outside of Gnal's range she stopped, did a backflip, and changed who she was attacking. Kitan barely blocked her thrusting slash. He tried to counter but again like last all he could do was defend against her. Gnal raced in and side swipped her at the waist making her halt her assault on Kitan and jump away from the both of them. She then jumped and round house kicked Gnal, who successfully blocked the kick but was knocked down by the shear strength she had put into it. He rose to his feet fast and resumed his attack on their master. Kitan joined in the assault by attacking her from both sides. She wasn't ready for it. they began attacking her in seperate places. When one would go high the other went low. She was someone with quick reflexes and was able to parry both or dodge one and then move out of the way of the other. It wasn't going to end like last time Kitan thought to himself It wont--. Suddenly she stopped grabbed Gnal's spear and did a small hop and twisted in mid air. while in a floating state off the ground she kicked his shoulder causing him to release his hold on his weapon. She then began using both the spear and her knife alternating attacking and defending his attacks. He was overwhelmed by her skill. No this cant end like last time he thought desperately I wont lose to her again. He gave a quick glance to Gnal to see he had recovered somewhat and was once again getting to his feet to join him. He returned to fending off his master until Gnal could take some of the heat off of him. Too late Kitan had let his gaurd down on his left side for a brief moment and was sucker punched just under his ribs with so much force that it knocked him back and the wind from his lungs that his legs buckled from the force. Gnal was next to go down when he had tried to throw a punch at her when she dodged it and the kick that came after it. She returned the kick ten fold when she kicked him in the gut. Down he went, but not without a sweep kick she sent his way when he was gasping for air. She calmly rose to her full height and surveyed the scene around her.
"I guess I may have overdone it a little" she said walking over to Gnal helping him to his feet
coughing and trying to breath Kitan replied "I..can't believe...we lost...again"
"Don't be mad that you lost, but be happy that you lasted that long" she said checking the wound on Gnal's head, leg, and arm.
"Hah..thats easy for you...to say. You weren't on...the recieving end...of your kick" Gnal said grabbing his leg and wincing from the pain "my head...is spinning" moving his hand from his leg to his head feeling for where it felt like she had broke through his thick skull.
"Sorry, put some ice on it and the swelling should go down." she turned and spoke to Kitan "I might have broken a rib or two so try not to move or breath too much."
the rest of the day they took turns sparring with their master. Near noon they took a small lunch break and resumed their training. Throughout the day Master Tin Dall would give them tips on how they could improve their skills. Aroound sunset in the middle of Kitan turn with her she turned to glance at the sun. It was halfway below the mountains in the distance. Kitan thought he had an opening, so he took it. He dashed forward and punched with his left then twisted so the blade was pionted to her. He learned that if he wasn't ready to kill her then he wouldn't be able to touch her. Without even paying the slightest bit of attention to him she leaned forward and lifted her leg and made contact with his jaw. With such force behind the kick he was forced into the air and landed like a rock dropping in a pond.
She turned and with a surprised look on her face said "Why are you on the ground, you know if you don't use all your skills you'll never beat me" then went on to say more to Gnal then him "you should turn in for the day, we will resume the training tomorrow and the next day and the next until well, I get tired of wipin the floors with you two" then walked off laughing again with that gut laugh of hers.
When she had walked a ways Gnal limped over to Kitan and they both watched her. "You think she was dropped on her head when she was a baby? Or maybe, thats just how she is...you know the sadistic, old hag that we have all come to know and love so very much?" he asked sarcastically then trying to mimic her he attempted to laugh like her. Kitan laughed as well. More at his attempt than anything else. Afterward they walked back to cabin and tried to soothe the pain from being pounded on. The routine for the next couple weeks was the same as that first day. They would rise with the sun, try as hard as they could in their practice fights with their master, and get pounded. Then about the third week something happened that made their spirits rise. Kitan was in the middle of his match with her and as was part of their morning routine, getting pounded into the ground. She was in the middle of an attempt at a kick to his side as he was trying to recover from a punch to his face when he moved so fast that he grabbed her leg, kicked out her other leg and as she was falling to the ground returned the favor earlier with a fist to her face. She hit the ground with a loud thud, She recovered fast and when they locked gazes she had a smile on her face.
"Good. Your finally learning something, I knew if I beat it into you then you'd eventually get it." She said wiping the blood from her lip
Kitan couldn't believe it. After all this time, I anticipated her attack and countered her. I can win, I can WIN! he thought to himself getting his adrenaline going he rose to his feet and rushed her. When he was just outside her range he threw his weapons away to the side and continued his onslaught. Throwing away his weapons had thrown her off gaurd, she had watched him for so long and she came to the resolution that his dual swords were an extension of his own body. They were him and him the blades. To throw away apart of yourself, a trained warrior would never disarm himself, and yet he had done it. He had thrown the dice and he had risked it all. At that moment he reminded her of an old friend from a past she thought she had forgot, or forced herself not to remember. He threw punch after punch, kick after kick in reckless abandon. She moved left and right but it was no use. Was he getting faster? She thought. His movement has changed somehow. Its as if he's another person. Letting her gaurd down for a second he took advantage of that. He sent a puch into her stomach that knocked the wind out of her. As she fell to the floor He dropped to the ground and with a kick just as swiftly delt as the punch connected with her chin, that sent her into the air. Before she hit the floor she moved her hands so she could roll softly and end standing facing him.
"Thats enough" She said forcefully, the smile she had before was gone. Whatever happened made her nervous. Gnal saw that she was troubled.
"Gnal you're up after I get something to drink" she said. Ten minutes later Gnal took over for Kitan. The fight with Gnal went down quite fast compared to Kitan and afterward she told them to end it for the day.
"Meet me later in front of the fire I have something to discuss with you" was all she said.
They went in rested, took care of what needed to be done. When She came to get them they cautiously followed. She sat in the chair with a small notebook, gazing intently at the cover of it. She hadn't even noticed they had entered until Gnal cleared his throat.
Startled she instinctively went for her knife and stopped when she noticed it was just them. "Oh...forgive me...I need to talk to you" she finished staring at Kitan.
"Why? Was it about earlier, I thought thats what you wanted 'the student to surpass the teacher' right?"
"No at your current skill level you should never have been able to move like you did, let alone use the FORCE you did. No I have seen that power before...from just one man"
Kitan stared at her as if the answers to his next question was on her face even before he was going to ask it. "Who was he? How did you come to know him? What happened to him?" Kitan asked
Gnal leaned in close to Kitan and said "I bet it was the last person that ever gave her a little lovin if you know what I--" he stopped when she had thrown a log at his head. "Alright so maybe that wasn't who it was" He then stepped back, closer to the door.
"No, he was a good friend. He helped me during the Great Divide. We..traveled together along with a few others" She said her eyes glazing over telling Kitan she was going back into her memories to relive the experiences.
"What happened?"
She flipped open the book and read from it.
"'Dear Diary, Its early spring, I competed in the tournament and once again lost. It wasn't all bad, I met a man who is searching for someone. He doesn't seem like such a bad person so I decided to help him. We are traveling together now in hopes of one day finding who it is hes searching for, oh and his name Jonathan.' It goes on" she said turning to a page furthur in.
"'Diary I don't know what to say tonight. Jonathan has me worried. At night he mutters stuff in his sleep, stuff about a woman and fire and a man. I guess it might be his wife and the man may have kidnapped her. The man then may have tried to kill him by burning him and his house to the ground. But thats not the strange thing, we were attacked by bandits and he fought...like...I don't know, someone who was enraged but still had control of his sanity.' Sound familiar?" She flipped only a few pages this time
"'To whom that finds this. Jonathan has done something terrifying! He has lost all sanity we thought he had. One minute he was gaurding the King, while leading the King's Gaurd. Then the next minute he was attacking his own people. Slaughtering them like pigs being led to the slaughter. I barely managed to get away with my life. The look in his eyes when we locked gazes for that brief instant. I am now traveling to his family to deliver the news. As he tried to kill the king, an injured archer, with the last of his strength shot an arrow that penitrated his arm. It gave me the time I needed to...'"
She closed the book. "I saw that same look in your eyes Kitan" She said not looking at him but at the book.
"How do you know I am like this Jonathan guy?"
"Because this is my diary. Jonathan and I were close friends we shared everything. We were like..no we WERE family. Over the months we traveled together we could move and act as one or as individual people. As we fought together he slowly grew more aggressive. As he grew violent he began to change. He bagan mutturing to himself, and going off and being secretive. The way he thought, talked, moved, it all changed. When I fought you today I saw the same look in your eyes as well"
So? That proves nothing" He retorted
Before she could reply a small object flew through the window. Kitan dove behind the chair to his left, Gnal jumped back behind the door, and Master Tin Dall just rose to her feet and grabbed her knife.
"Kitan, Gnal. Leave this place and what ever you do don't look back!" She yelled then leaped through the window and into the blackness of night.
Kitan looked at Gnal and he responded by unsheathing his spear and tilting his head as if he wanted to follow her. Kitan nodded, unsheathed his blades and one after the other followed their master. As they waited for their eyes to get accustomed to the darkness, they could hear the clanging of steel on steel. She was fighting someone. Gnal's eyes adjusted faster and whispered "follow me when your ready" then ran in the direction of the battle. Kitan could only listen to the clanging of steel until his eyes adjusted. He heard Gnal's war cry that he was so famous for and then more clanging of steel. Suddenly he heard a loud yell. Not waiting for his eyes to adjust he ran in the direction Gnal had and the yell had come from. By the time he got there his eyes had finally adjusted. The scene he saw made him terrified. Master Tin Dall was pinned to a tree like a dart board by her own dagger which was lodged in her shoulder and side. Gnal was on the ground, his spear lay feet away just out of his reach. He couldn't tell if he was breathing. He then looked around for the person responsible and what he saw was a man with his back to Kitan wearing a dark cape and a long sword sheath that came from his side and curved until it ended just inches from the ground.
"What did you do?!" He yelled not waiting for an answer and charged the man. Within a blink of an eye Kitan felt a searing pain in his leg and then a brutal punch to his stomach. Kitan then felt this mans strong hand grab his throat and lift him up. He saw his eyes then and it was as if he was looking into a mirror, this man reminded him of the diary page his master had read to him just moments ago.
"So, there is someone else with the same power after such a short time of the last Awakening?" he said slowly increasing his hold on his throat examining his face. Kitan was getting light headed now, he had to do something. With his remaining strength he tried to stab the man which ended up being a very clumsy attempt. The man swatted it away easily. He pulled Kitan in closer so he could whisper in his ear and said "if you wish to avenge your comrade there, than leave this place. Let the fires of your memories burn in you so you may avenge them. Without that you will never defeat me. You must become...stronger."
He then dropped Kitan and when he tried to get to his feet the man drew a small blade and flung it at his chest. Kitan luckily tripped over himself as he was getting up, causing the blade to puncture his right side, which felt like it was just above a rib.
"You are still too weak. You must become...stronger" and then turned and walked into the darkness vanishing onto the night.
Kitan hobbled over to Gnal and found that he was dead. He was too late, he had loss too much blood and even if he hadn't, there is nothing he could do so far away from the village. He could at least bury him in his favorite place. He then turned and hobbled over to his master. She was still breathing, but barely. He removed her from the tree and he heard her groan and muttur nonsese. She muttured things about Jonathan and the village. Dralgo and her youth, but what struck him was what she said about the waterfall. She kept saying something about healing and waterfalls. He remembered the experience he had when he sat under the falls. He carefully put her over his shoulder. When he got to the falls he carefully layed her down so the water fell on every part of her except her face. He waited for something to happen but nothing. As he waited the sun rose and its rays shone along her shoulder wound. He looked closely at it and thought he saw that there was no wound there. He picked her up and went inside and layed her down in her bed. He then saw to his own wounds and fell asleep in a chair by her side. When he woke he saw she was already outside by a large stone sticking out of the ground with a spear embedded into the ground behind it.
She turned to face him and in such a faint voice he barely heard her she said "We need to talk."
