FORGOTTEN MEMORIES Chapter 1: Nightmares

Raine woke up in a sweat after having the nightmare she has had for weeks. She gazed across the room for reassurance that it was only a dream. She leaned back, relieved to see the familiar walls of her bedroom.

"What do these dreams mean?"

With no memory of her past she was confused by the dreams. Raine looked down beside her to Nelo, who was peacefully sleeping beside her.

"Lucky bastard." she thought to herself as she gazed across his face.

Each time Raine looked at him she was instantly reminded why she loved him so much. Nelo was handsome yet dark and mysterious. He had long flowing black hair that glowed in the moonlight, and golden eyes that caught your breath each time you looked into them. Raine put her knees to her chin and closed her eyes. Her mind began to wander back to when she and Nelo were part of the Fox Fire gang. She remembered all the adventures they had together, the bar fights, the battles, and Nelo's arrogance. Raine smiled, it had been eight months since the group had broken up. She no longer saw her friend Fate Darkstar. Rion, Fate's boyfriend, traveled across the country to get away from his problems. Raine and Nelo had faced their own problems since then. Nelo had been battling himself inside, and Raine was devastated by it all. Nelo finally came to peace with himself and made everything up to her.

Raine grinned, "Even though he can still be an arrogant ass.”

Raine sighed again as she curled up next to Nelo and slowly drifted off to sleep again.

The flames grew hotter in the small Lupine village, while hysteria and panic consumed the frightened villagers. Horsemen in black cloaks raced around on horses that breathed fire, slaying those who got in their way. A small Lupine girl ran around frantically searching for her mother.

"MOMMY!!!" the young girl cried out as she looked around the chaos.

As the Lupine girl continued to scream one of the dark riders caught her in their sight. He charged forward with his sword above his head racing toward the girl who stood frozen with fear. Just as the dark rider was about to strike the young girl with his sword she was grabbed by a Lupine boy. He ran straight into the woods with the dark riders following behind them. The Lupine boy quickened his pace to put some distance between them and the dark riders. The girl clung tight to the boy burying her face into his chest. Suddenly the boy stopped in a wooden opening and put the girl down.

The boy turned to the girl "Go hide in a bush, quickly! Don't make a single sound and don't come out until I tell you its okay, understand?"

The girl nodded to the boy and ran to some thick brush and crawled inside. She turned around to see the boy still standing in the opening facing the direction of the incoming dark riders.

"Why isn't he hiding?" the girl thought to herself.

Finally the dark riders entered the opening and surrounded the Lupine boy.

"Here I Am." the boy said to the dark riders.

"Cocky lil' bastard isn't he?" One of the dark riders boasted.

"Where's the girl?" growled one of the dark riders who rode up to the boy and kicked him to the ground.

The Lupine girl watched from the brush and flinched as the dark riders continued to beat up on the boy for answers.

"What girl?" the boy arrogantly said.

One of the dark riders grew impatient and got off his horse and grabbed the Lupine boy by his collar.

"Stupid Lupine child, I will kill you if you do not tell me where the girl is" The dark rider demanded as he threw the boy to the ground.

The Lupine girl began to cry, her tears silently flowing across her cheeks.

"Why doesn't he just tell them where I am?" The girl pondered.

The boy pushed himself up onto his knees, and the Lupine girl noticed a grin on the boys face. The boy then looked up and flicked his wolf-like tail.

"Not if I kill you first!"

Suddenly the boy leaped up and drew a dagger to the dark rider’s neck, and has he slit the throat of the dark rider one of the torches lit up the boys golden eyes. The lupine girl stared into the boys eyes and it seemed like time had stopped. As she looked deeper and deeper into his eyes all she could see was pure hatred and anger. The girl began to feel overwhelmed and looked away causing the brush to stir, she froze has her heart sank. She quickly looked back to see if anyone had noticed. To her dismay all attention was drawn towards her. She found the boy looking right at her as if he knew exactly where her eyes were, his eyes were different now they were no longer filled with hatred and anger, but with fear. Suddenly one of the dark riders grabbed the boy from behind and pierced the boy through the back with their sword.

"RUN!!!" gasped the boy as he fell to the ground.

The small Lupine girl fled from the bush, running as fast as she could. She glanced behind her only to see the dark riders following close behind. They quickly gained on her, as she grew exhausted, unable to run much faster. Tears filled her eyes "I'm going to die" she kept thinking over and over again. She glanced behind her once more only to stumble over some raised roots and crashed to the ground. The girl cried out as bolts of pain jolted through her leg. She went to get up and continue the chase when she was kicked down by one of the dark riders. She began to sob uncontrollably as one of the dark riders got off their horse and walked towards her. She forced herself to look up into the hood of the dark riders, and as she did the dark rider made a screeching howl causing the girl to scream and cover her ears. The dark rider then quickly unsheathed his sword and swung it above his head and screeched again.

"Please!!" the girl cried out as the dark rider swung his sword downwards.

Raine screamed as she sat up from having her nightmare, still reenacting it she fought with Nelo who was trying to hold her.

"Raine! Raine! It's me! It's just me!" Nelo screamed at her.

Raine opened her eyes and frantically looked around the room then brought her gaze to Nelo who looked concerned. Tears began to well up in her eyes as she quickly buried her face into Nelo's chest. Nelo squeezed her tight and stroked her hair softly as she cried.

"It was just a dream" He reassured her.

Raine held on to him tighter "It felt so real...I don't understand... I keep having the same dream...over...and over again... and each time... they get worse" she managed to whimper.

She then sat back and wiped the tears from her eyes "It's like...they're memories of my past...”

Nelo took her chin in his hand and and brought her gaze to his "It's okay, you have me to help you Raine.”

Nelo then wiped away a tear with his thumb and smiled at her. Raine smiled back, but she couldn't help feeling afraid. Nelo patted her cheek and got up from the bed and stretched his arms out wide. Raine looked at his naked back as he stretched "So many scars". One scar caught her eye and Raines heart began to race.

"Nelo?" Raine said with a shaken voice.

"Yea?" Nelo replied as he put his boots on.

Raine got up and traced the scar with her finger "Where did you get this scar?"

Nelo looked over his shoulder with an eyebrow raise "Raine... I can't even keep track of my shirt let alone one scar out of hundreds."

Raine frowned at his arrogance "Just asking....”

Nelo turned around and saw the discontent look on Raine's face and kissed her cheek "Damn you woman. You’re lucky I love you... otherwise I would have turned you into an ice cycle by now".

Raine stood up from the bed and smirked at Nelo "Well with that attitude you would make a good target for a lightning bolt".

Nelo chuckled as he put on his shirt and trench coat.

"Well I got some things to do" Nelo said as he opened the bedroom door "I'll be back later".

Raine watched as he went out the door and sighed. She slowly walked over to the chair and grabbed her jacket. As she put it on she stood in front of the mirror gazing at her reflection.

"Why do I feel like this?" Raine thought as she straightened out her long black hair.

Raine then walked to the window and looked out across the field of lilacs. Her blue eyes shimmered as the sunlight hit them and she smiled.

"It's so peaceful" Raine said to herself as she stroked a loch of her hair.

She was happy that they lived far from any villages or towns’; being a Lupine wasn’t always the greatest thing to be. Raine and Nelo were always treated like beasts or monsters. Raines thoughts were suddenly interrupted when her ears began to twitch "Something’s coming...”. Raine burst out of her room and ran down the hall to the front door and looked out to the lilac field.

"Nelo!?!?!" Raine called out, but no one was there.

An eerie feeling crept through Raine as she noticed everything was silent. The birds were not singing their usual songs, and the wind was still. Raine slowly walked out into the field of lilacs and crouched to hide herself. Raine sniffed the still air smelling a fragrance she knew all to well. "Blood" Raine felt panic rising in the pit of her stomach.

"Where is Nelo!??! Where is the smell of blood coming from, and why is it getting stronger?!?!"

These thoughts raced through Raines head as she surveyed the tree's bordering the field that surrounded her house. Raine glanced back towards the house and froze. There standing on the porch was a ghastly creature snooping around her windows. The hair on the back of Raines neck began to rise and sent chills jolting down her spine. The creature was a frightening sight, whatever it was it looked like it was inside out. The skeleton part of the body was on the outside and the flesh underneath the bones gleamed in the sunlight. The creature paused and turned to the field and let out a blood curdling scream that made Raine shudder.

"Just like the scream from the nightmare"

Panic overcame Raine as she realized the creature was not alone. Three more creatures came out of no where to join the one who had just screeched. Raine wanted to run, to get away, but was frozen in fear. Raines heart began to race and as if the creatures could hear her heart thumping they jolted their heads towards where she laid crouched. Raines attention was caught by the brush behind her rustling and then another blood curdling cry, this time closer. Raine went to look behind her but was met by a figure in a dark cape. Raine gasped and raised her gaze to inside the hood. Another cry came from right behind her and Raine felt her eyes roll back into her head and then it went dark.
