Chapter 2: Flames of Despair
Nelo sat, tracing the tip of his whiskey glass, at the bar. It had been a month since he had visited any human inhabited place, and already he felt threatening eyes glaring at his back. Nelo looked out of the corner of his eye and noticed everyone staring at him.
Nelo growled as he turned his head to the staring bar "WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU LOOKIN' AT!?!?!"
They all jumped at his outburst and moved their gaze to their drinks before them.
"That’s what I THOUGHT!!" Nelo said slugging the remainder of his whiskey down.
Nelo waved his glass at the bartender, smirking, for another refill. The bartender looked at Nelo questionably as if deciding if it was safe enough to serve the lupine. After pausing the bartender walked over and poured him another short glass of whiskey. Nelo nodded to the bartender then chugged down the whiskey in one gulp, then sat the glass down on the bar and reached into his pocket for money.
"HEY UHh-Err BUDDY!!" shouted a man from the far side of the bar.
"YOUR KIN-KIND ISHN'T VELC-C-OME HERE!"
Nelo looked up to the now barely standing man with a cold stare. "Says who?" Nelo asked rather annoyed.
"SAYZ ME YOU MUT-T-TANT F-FREAK!" replied the drunk as he almost toppled over.
"Joe, that’s enough!" warned the bartender.
"B-BE QUIET YOU OLD C-C-COOT!" said the drunk who pointed towards the bartender.
Nelo sighed, it seemed like every bar there was always another idiot wanting to get the crap beat out of them.
The drunken man came to a halt on Nelo's right side and snorted. "HARRR HARR HAHA V-VHAT THE HELL IS THOSE? D-DOGGY EARS? YOUR M-MOTHURRR MUST'VE B-BEEN AN UG-UGLY BITCH TO G-GIVE BIRTHH T-TO YOU!"
The drunken man then burst into laughter at his insult. Nelo growled, he was used to the insults but it was still annoying as hell. The drunken man settled from his laughter and surveyed the "dog-eared" man. He snorted again and then spit on Nelo's face. Everyone in the bar was intrigued by the scene at the bar, some gasped while others chuckled. Nelo raised his arm and wiped off the liquor smelling spit from his face with his sleeve. He put the money he was scrounging for in his pocket on the counter top of the bar and stood from his stool. The drunken man took a wearily step back waiting for a response from his action. He was not let down when a shattering right hook to the jaw knocked him off his feet. Women in the bar gasped as the drunken man was knocked off his feet and crashed to the floor. The drunks’ buddies, who were enjoying the show, rose to their feet. Nelo, ready to take on the whole bar, drew his sword from his sheath, ready to slice anyone up who dared threaten him.
"THAT’S ENOUGH!!" yelled an angry bartender armed with a shotgun.
"YOU'RE NOTHING BUT TROUBLE HERE, LUPIN! GET OUT OF MY BAR AND DONT COME BACK!" cried the bartender cocking his gun and pointing it at Nelo.
Nelo sheathed his sword and raised his hands mockingly and turned on his heel and strode out the door.
"That makes 143 bars now..." Nelo said aloud as he looked at the front of the bar. It was amazing how much wolf ears can get you in trouble. Nelo flicked off the bar, one day he will get to enjoy a couple glasses of whiskey.
Feeling rather buzzed, Nelo made his way through the town letting anyone who dared look at him wrong know just how much he cared with a single finger. He could still smell the drunks nasty spit on his face and that only led to Nelo's mood growing worse.
"I wonder how these idiots would enjoy a five year long blizzard..."
Nelo thought deeply on how to torment every single one of them on the long walk home. Blizzards, yellow snow, and even an ice age crossed through Nelo's morbid mind. Being able to control the water in the air definitely did have its advantages. Nelo knew when he got home he'd have to leave out his "rumble in the bar story" to Raine, she always got upset when he would get into fights with villagers.
"Like she's a little angel.” Nelo mocked aloud remembering the time she had electrocuted a man with an ugly mustache for winking at her. Nelo rolled his eyes at the thought of how hypocritical she was all the time.
"Women"
Nelo gazed up at the sky admiring how nice the day was. The sun was bright and warm, and soft clouds painted the blue canvas above. The trees rustled in the soft wind as their leaves reflected the sunlight creating a flashy yet settle glow. Nelo stopped in his tracks and took in his surroundings with a deep breath. Although everything was perfect, something was off. Home was just across the sheltered bridge that Nelo was nearing. Once again the off feeling came back to Nelo and he began to wonder what was so weird. He looked back to the sky, but this time did not see the beautiful painting he had just admired, instead it was covered in black smoke. Nelo grimaced as he realized where it was coming from.
"Raine!!!"
Nelo raced towards his home, and when he entered the lilac field his worst fears were in front of him. The whole house was ablaze; everything he had dreamed, and wanted was now burning to ash. He searched around for any sign of Raine but he couldn't even track her scent.
"What if she is in there?” Nelo thought fearfully.
"RAINE!?!?!" Nelo called out her name over and over again as he ran towards the hot, searing flames.
He kicked down the front door and the whole house almost collapsed. A surge of flames came pouring out the doorway causing Nelo to take a step back. Nelo covered his face and jumped through the doorway into the burning house.
"RAINE!?!?!"
Nelo searched around all the flames and smoke for Raine. He couldn't put the fire out from inside the house because there was no water in the air. Thoughts of Raine near death kept Nelo searching inside the burning house. He knew it was a lost cause and that just going outside and putting the fire out would be the smarter thing to do, but his irrational thoughts kept him inside. Nelo began to make his way into the bedroom he had left her in when a support beam fell before him almost smashing him.
Nelo shook his head "I must be nuts!”
Nelo made his way back the way he came and exited the burning house. He ran out to the field and closed his eyes, hoping for the best, concentrating hard on his hydromancy. Nelo conjured up some cool air that caused the wind to pick up and bring in clouds. The sky black from smoke, darkened even more with the swelling of clouds. Drops of rain began to fall effortlessly to the ground and grew harder as the air became cooler. The flames began to slowly die down, but still raged on just as strong. Nelo, with his eyes still shut, made the temperature drop considerably. As the air grew colder Nelo's breath could be seen in the air. The flames began to die down the colder it got, and the damage to the house began to show its ugly face. Nelo did not even wait till all the flames were completely out when he returned to search. He frantically searched each room of the house and thoroughly checked the whole area.
Nothing.
Nelo was a bit relieved not to find a corpse of the one he loved, but was just as concerned that she was missing.
"I wonder if she went looking for me." Nelo thought as he started pacing in the field.
Nelo paced for what seemed like hours when suddenly something shiny on the ground caught his eye. Nelo knelt down and picked up the shiny object. Nelo grimaced at what he held in his hand, it was Raine's necklace. The ring he had given her the first time he confessed his love to her used to hang on the chain he held that was now broken. Nelo searched the ground around him and found the ring that had belonged to the chain. Something on the ring caught Nelo's eye again, he examined it more closely only to find something most disconcerting. Specks of blood stained the silver ring; Nelo glanced back to the chain and noticed the chained was stained in blood where it had been snapped.
