Chapter 4
Reminiscing
Reminiscing
It had been a month since Raine’s disappearance, and Nelo was going insane. He searched every village, every town, and every cottage for his beloved. Even with his acute lupine smell he couldn’t track her scent anywhere. The only thing he smelled that made him utterly sick was blood. He now sat at a bar in the main city of taking a break from his desperate search. In truth he had drank a little too much since arriving at the bar and already the hindering buzz of alcohol slowly contaminated his body. He swirled the contents of his whiskey glass and stared blankly at the wall.
“Raine… where have you gone?”
Next to him sat an old feeble man that time had not been kind to. His clothes were tattered and ripped and smudged with dirt. His hair was untamed and partially hidden under his cap while his beard cloaked the whole bottom half of his face. The old man glanced at Nelo and gave him a look up and down.
“What’s got you so under the weather boy?” The old man said hoarsely.
Nelo glanced at the man from the corner of his eye, and released a sigh he did not know he was holding. He hadn’t been aware of the old man sitting beside him till now, and wondered why this old man was striking up a conversation with a lupine.
“I’ve lost someone close to me” Nelo replied.
“Ah” the old man said slowly shifting his stole to somewhat face Nelo. “I lost someone once, my wife; she was the only one who could get this here old fart to give a damn”
The old man’s eyes seemed to waver a bit as if he were reminiscing over some forgotten memories.
Nelo took a swig of his whiskey and went back to swirling its contents. “How did you lose her?”
“Thieves” The old man replied, grimacing a bit. “I was workin’ for a farm near our house and was in the fields diggin’ trenches” The old man paused and took a swig of his own whiskey. “When thieves robbed our house and slit my wife’s throat for fightin’ to protect everything I worked hard to earn. She was always so proud of me for workin’ so hard to provide for her, but everything we owned didn’t mean a damn to me. Just her.”
The old man sighed and took another swig of his whiskey “and now.. I sit here everyday and drink myself to unconsciousness hoping one day.. I’ll eventually get to join her.” The old man gave a small chuckle “She’d be pissed if she saw me now, but sorry don’t mind me a reminiscin’ I’m just an old coot with nothing to live for. So who did you lose?”
Nelo wavered a bit, not really wanting to tell his story. It was odd enough having a conversation with a human let alone one that did not involve death threats. He raised the glass to the bartender for another refill and sighed again as the bartender took his glass.
“I lost my soul mate.” Nelo replied.
“Is that what lupines call wives?” The old man asked curiously.
Nelo had to hold back a grin. Oddly enough the old man was fully aware of what he was and seemed to have no problem with it.
“Maybe he is just too hammered to even care, or even just fed up with life to care about anything”
Nelo took a moment to realize he was exactly in the same state as this old drunk. Without Raine it seemed he was nothing more but a shadow upon this earth. It was truly amazing what power women had on men.
“Somewhat,” Replied Nelo. “We’ve made our promises to be mates and live the rest of our lives together; she kind of threatened me into it. Although I do love her a great deal and can’t see myself with any other. Of course her violence was what made me lover her in the first place.” Nelo chuckled a bit remembering the night they made their promises.
*Flash Back*
“Why won’t you just tell me already that YOU LOVE ME” Raine said as she shoved Nelo.
“Because I don’t love you, PSYHCO!!! You are absolutely annoying, bitchy, whiney, and retarded!” Nelo countered back with a snarl. “Not to mention fucking abusive!”
The look Raine gave him then could have made Satan himself cower in a corner and whimper for his mother. He felt a ping of fear hit him but pushed it aside and put a wicked grin on his face. Raine closed her eyes and let out her breathe she had been holding, for a moment Nelo thought he saw steam escape from her. She opened her eyes again and before Nelo could even react she thrusted out her hand and hit him with lightning. Nelo groaned in pain and shot her a look of “What the hell, PSYHCO!”. Only causing Raine to cast out more electrifying blasts at him.
“IF YOU JUST SAY IT I’LL STOP YOU STUBBORN BASTARD! IF I HAVE TO I WILL FRY EVERY OUNCE OF EGO IN THAT THICK SKULL OF YOURS!” Raine shouted as she continued her assault. Nelo lunged at her catching her off guard and tackled her. Raine struggled with him to get the upper hand of the battle and kicked and punched her way to it.
“WOULD YOU QUIT BEING A PSHYCO?” Nelo screamed at her pinning down one of her arms.
“WOULD YOU QUIT BEING A PUSSY AND ADMIT YOU LOVE ME?” Raine countered back punching him in the kidney.
Nelo groaned and managed to pin down her other arm. She panted heavily as she tried to free herself from him, struggling against the weight of his body straddling hers and his hands tightly pinning her arms down. Raine growled ferociously and thrashed underneath him. Nelo grinned and could not help but think how beautiful she truly was laying there. Slowly he crept his face downwards and captured her lips with his. Raine’s eyes widened at first but slowly fluttered shut accepting his kiss.
After what seemed like minutes Nelo released her and put his cheek against hers and whispered in her ear “I love you”.
Okay yea I know… short and what the hell you ended it there? But bare with me for I wrote this at work and it’s time for me to finally go home.. so quit whining.. I’m actually kind of happy how this chapter turned out, and yes I will update soon!
