Chapter 3
Chris paced his foyer contemplating how to rid himself of Karen Reid, he was angry about this new occurrence and went red in the face when Miranda walked in to meet the boy. She came in with this smug look on her face like something good was about to happen, like she was finally going to get what she wanted and Chris was going to have his bride, at least that was running through her head until she saw the look on his face.
“What happened, did Leah turn you down?” she laughed only to be met with a shocking slap to her face.
“Are you stupid, our perfect plan should have ended yesterday,” Chris yelled at her getting closer to her as she continued to back away until she reached the door and realized that she was pinned. “Now it has to end before Karen Reid finds out what we’re up to.”
“Who is Karen Reid?” Miranda asked sensing his frustration which made her even more fearful.
“She is the only daughter of one the most powerful non-human families; Leah is her cousin.” Chris said slowly knowing that Miranda would know nothing of the Redding family based in Ireland. “This has put a wrinkle in my plan.”
“Please sir, allow me to end her love for John tonight you can watch over me personally.” She said pleading Chris to give her another chance to finish her mission to break up the relationship building between Leah and John.
“I fear, Miranda that this is too much for you to handle.” He said softly leaning down to her ear. He could feel the panic in her breath as he slowly drew the concealed knife from its holder that was placed on his belt.
“Please, don’t do this.” Miranda cried seeing the light bounce off the blade. Chris simply laughed at the young girls pleas for a second chance as he looked at her face to see into her eyes, the eyes of a scared young girl knowing that her life was about to end. He leaned down and kissed her as he drove the knife into her and hearing her breath hitch as he pulled away still looking into her eyes as she began to cry and try to speak only nothing came out.
“I know that it hurts.” Chris said calmly as he twisted the blade up making the wound cut into one of her lungs allowing blood to fill it. He continued to stare into her eyes watching them become lifeless shells. When he had finished he wiped the blood off with her shirt, and began to look through her things taking her money and credit cards to make it look like a robbery gone wrong and then ordered his staff to dump her in to an ally by John’s house.
Everyone was ready to go and decided to walk there instead of taking a car considering that it was only three blocks away, and they could use the exercise. They all complimented each other on how they looked and noticed that Chris had not shown up yet and were planning to wait for him until Karen received a voice message saying that he was running late and would meet them at the club. Karen locked up the safe house and activated her father’s extensive and well thought out security system. The walk was surprisingly shorter than it had been in the past and that was probably because they were having so much fun talking to one another and getting to know Karen and Adam better and were asking for funny childhood stories about Leah who blushed and continued to get redder as the stories got even more embarrassing. John met them at the door and was introduced to Karen and Adam while he only received glares from the others and Leah gave him a quite hello. They went inside and got a huge booth and it didn’t take Karen more than a few seconds to notice that Miranda was missing.
“I told her to meet us here. She’s probably running late.” John explained as Chris rushed in breathlessly and practically jumped into the booth next to Leah.
“Chris, what’s wrong?” Leah asked giving him her water as he tried to calm down.
“Dude, someone was killed by your house.” He said looking over to John, causing everyone to go wide eyed at the statement. Though Karen would have joined in she sensed that something was off but she didn’t know what.
“No way,” Anya said more interested in this latest development in Long Island society. “You know who?”
“Yeah I caught a glimpse, sorry John it was Miranda.” When he said who it was there was a dead silence that fell over the group. “I overheard the cops say that it was a robbery all her money and cards were gone.”
Karen simply listened to Chris as he explained what he saw and she noticed a hint of joy on his face which made her even more untrustworthy about Chris and then she saw the sadness on John’s face and the same expression on Leah’s, however Karen could tell that her heart was breaking for him. The silence continued for half an hour the group thinking of Miranda even though no one liked her she didn’t deserve to die like that. Chris was the first to speak when a good dance song started to play and asked Leah if she would like to dance, she said yes then Anya and Tyler followed suit leaving Karen, Adam, and John in the booth. Adam looked over to Karen silently asking her to dance.
“Thanks sweetie but I’m not in the mood right now. How about you two go and get drinks for everyone, I have to make a phone call.” She said lightly knowing that the four dancing would be thirsty when they came back and slipped outside to make a private and personal phone call home.
“Hello?” Came a child’s voice and Karen could tell that it was Jay waking up from his study nap.
“Jay, its Karen,” she said calmly not wanting to alarm the third youngest. “Is mom or dad home?”
“Nope they went out for dinner.” Jay said catching that his sister was hiding something but knew that she would never tell him until he was old enough to handle it.
“What about Bryan?” She asked again hoping that her older brother was home.
“He has a ‘study date’ and won’t be home ‘til later.” Jay said as he heard Karen lightly curse which he ignored.
“Scott?” Karen said in the last ditch attempt to find someone who can help her.
“Yeah, he’s here but he’s got the baby.” Jay said as Scott mouthed who was on the phone.
“Give him the phone and take Matt.” Karen said happy that one of her siblings was home. “And don’t tell me that you can’t hold him. I’ve seen you lifting Bryan’s weights when he’s not home.”
“Ok,” Jay said as he handed the phone to his older brother and took the baby.
“Karen, where are you. Mom won’t tell us anything.” Scott said taking all the worry she had on her shoulders and putting it onto his.
“I’m in New York. I have a huge favor to ask.” Karen said in a pleading kind of tone making her sound pathetic which made Scott laugh and forget the fact that she was in New York.
“Fine, I’ll ask mom why you’re on the east coast. What do you need,” Scott said as she heard him organize mom’s books which held the names and history of every demon and non-human that had ever been born.
“You remember dad doing all that research on the Demon Lord.” Karen said as she heard Scott grunt an answer while shuffling papers around looking for that document that Tom had found. “I need to know if there is someone by the name of Christopher Ackerman listed anywhere on there.”
“It’s going to take me a few minutes to look through everything. The parchment that dad found lists all the Demon Lords throughout history and I think it predicts their descendants because this was written two hundred years before Hitler took over Germany and he’s listed.” Scott said not sounding surprised but laughed either way.
“Really, put down a memo to ask dad about that. I better get back, call when you find it.” Karen said getting another grunt response from her brother as she hung up and went back inside to join her cousin and everyone and glad to see them laughing and having fun.
“Hey where did you run off to?” Leah said smiling as she scooted closer to Chris making room for Karen who saw the flash of jealousy on John’s face.
“I had to call home and make sure the boys didn’t blow up the house,” Karen said which was true she just didn’t want to elaborate. She sat down next to her cousin but really wanted to curl up next to Adam but she held down that urge.
The night continued to flourish and as the night wore on Chris and Leah kept getting closer and closer which made both Karen and John uncomfortable as the couple came back from the dance floor Chris left to get more water as he started to leave Karen whispered into Adam’s ear that no demon or non-human with good hearing could understand Adam forced a laugh and offered to help carry the drinks, as Leah began to head for the bathroom, Karen got up as well following Leah.
“Oh, Karen you have to go too?” Leah said lucidly but smelled like a drunk which scared Karen half to death.
“Leah, how are you feeling sweetie?” Karen said keeping Leah’s head up straight so she could see her eyes which were fully dilated and bloodshot. That bastard better not be drugging my cousin.
“Karen?” Adam’s voice said quietly making sure that there were no other women in the room before he entered.
“Relax, there’s no one else in here.” Karen said as he came in with a glass of water. “Is that the glass of water that he got for Leah?”
“Yeah, the bartender spilled soda on me I didn’t see what he put in.” Adam said in an apologetic manner but Karen didn’t look surprised at his statement.
“Give it here.” Karen said taking the cup from Adam’s hand and looking it over. “Whatever he put in dissolved fast, however there’s still a smell. Son of a bitch, it smells like ecstasy.”
“I don’t want to know how you know that.” Adam said dumping the drink down the sink. “Are you going to cut the evening short?”
“Do you even have to ask?” Karen sighed passing Leah to her boyfriend who followed her to the group. “Sorry guys but Leah’s not feeling well.”
“She looks fine to me.” Chris said boldly causing Karen to growl and almost pouncing on the boy.
“Karen, he isn’t worth it.” Adam whispered lightly touching her arm trying to help her calm down. “Anya, Tyler, can you two get home ok?”
“Yeah, it’s not a problem.” Anya said sweetly but concerned for her friend’s safety and shot Chris a look that made him shiver. Karen headed for the door Leah hanging off her shoulder slurring her words made a real spectacle for everyone else in the club and Karen just glared at them all and they stopped talking until she and the others were outside breathing in the cool autumn air and set Leah down on a nearby bench.
“How is she?” Chris asked leaning in to get a closer look at Leah who was sitting next to Karen, who grabbed the boy by his shirt and slammed him into a nearby tree.
“How do you think?” Karen yelled at him her eyes turning into a dark navy blue color. Adam reacted quickly before Karen had a chance to do any physical damage him. “You drugged her give me at least one good reason why I shouldn’t punch out your heart and feed it to stray dogs.”
“Karen!” Adam said pulling his girlfriend off of her cousin’s friend. “You’re losing control sweetheart.”
Karen fought Adam as well as Chris not caring about what was happening she just wanted to pummel the teenager that tried to drug and take advantage of her cousin. She pushed Adam away from her and into Anya and Tyler. Karen held the Chris there glaring and growling at him as her hair turned from its normal brownish shine into a silver reddish color that scared everyone including Adam. Karen was so angry that she couldn’t contain her powers; though no one had ever seen Karen in her other form it scared the three people who were still able to see the changes.
Leah’s eyes began to refocus and she realized that she was outside and she also noticed her headache and the fact that Karen had one of her friends pinned against a tree by the neck. She jumped off her spot on the bench and wobbled as she tried to regain mobility in her legs she smiled when she saw John helping her stand. Leah slowly walked over to her cousin much to John’s opposing and telling her what she missed; Leah wanted to hear it from either her cousin’s mouth or Christopher’s.
“Karen, back off.” Leah said sternly but gently as she placed her hand lightly on Karen’s arm trying to calm her down. Karen seemed to pause for a second and turned to Leah and simply stared before punching a hole in the tree next to his head then she let go of him and walked away. “Are you ok?”
“Yeah,” Chris said rising from the ground and looking at the hole that was an example of his head. “Your cousin’s crazy.”
“She’s protective of family especially when it comes to me.” Leah said softly her eyes following Karen to make sure she didn’t do anything rash. “Karen come on back!”
Karen just stood where she was far away from the group trying to breath and relax as she attempted to regain some sort of control over her abilities. She was there for several more minutes before her hair went back to the brown that she loved and it went back to the length that it was at before her episode she headed back to the group to force an apology to Chris when she felt her phone ring in her back pocket, she pulled it out and it read Scott which she quickly answered. “What do you have?”
“Karen,” Came Tom’s voice not her nerdy younger brother which she expected. “Is everything ok?”
“Tom, I thought you weren’t going to be home until later. Scott didn’t blow up the house again did he?” Karen said breathing slowly trying to hide her exhaustion from her father.
“Scott and the house are fine; he said you requested a name of the demon parchment.” Tom said quietly but Karen could tell that he was annoyed at her for having her younger brother look through his things. “Something about a Christopher Ackerman? What does he have to do with Leah?”
“Long story, what did Scott find?” Karen said hoping that news came to her soon as she continued to walk toward Leah and the others. Karen waited as she heard her father move through papers and files looking for what she requested.
“Ok, I found it.” Tom said reorganizing himself before presenting his findings. “Christopher Ackerman is on the list of future Demon Lords. Karen it says he’s the next in line, I’m coming out there.”
“Dad, don’t fly out here. I can handle it.” Karen said bravely knowing what Tom might do if she wasn’t already prepared for it. “Send Bryan or Scott if you’re worried but don’t fly yourself all the way out here when mom and the munchkins need you.”
“Alright, I’ll send Scott out just as a precaution, understand. Now put your cousin on I want to say hello.” Tom said calmly respecting his daughter’s decision even if she was right about his wife and youngest boys needing him at home. Karen held the phone in front of Leah’s face, who quickly composed herself after she reached for the phone.
“Hello.” She said slowly trying to think before speaking so she didn’t slur her words tipping Tom off to their situation.
“Hey Leah, its Tom.”
“Oh, hi Uncle Tom, how are you?” Leah said happy to hear from her uncle but shocked that he called Karen first.
“I’m fine, the boys are fine. Did Karen mention that we had a new baby?” Tom said catching the hints in her voice that she was taking her time.
“No, she didn’t. The house must be packed, well give my best to Ann and the boys.” Leah said trying to hang up the phone or at least pass it back to Karen before something went totally wrong.
“Freeze Leah,” Tom said making her slightly flinch in fear of what was coming. “Are you drunk?”
“No, Uncle Tom I’m not drunk. My water glass was drugged.” Leah said calmly as she could and pulled the phone away from her ear before Tom began screaming and yelling at both Leah and Karen for not focusing on her drinks.
Chris paced his foyer contemplating how to rid himself of Karen Reid, he was angry about this new occurrence and went red in the face when Miranda walked in to meet the boy.
