Chapter 4
Tom was silent for what felt like an eternity and the waiting was driving Leah crazy not to mention that Karen was bug eyed and shaking her head when Leah had told Tom what happened, she knew that Karen was imaging what her father would say to the girls.
“What do you mean, you were drugged?” Tom said calmly trying to relax while his girls explained how they let down their defenses low enough to let someone close to their drinks.
“Well it wasn’t exactly her fault.” Karen chimed in knowing that she would get a through talking to when Leah returned the phone. Karen motioned for the others to leave and meet back and the safe house while they dealt with Tom, Adam read the signals and understood his girlfriend’s sign language as he grabbed Chris by the shirt and dragged him, followed but the others, to the safe house. “One of Leah’s friends was getting us water; I should have noticed something sooner.”
“You’re right you should have, but none of that matter now.” Tom said hearing the disappointment in his own daughter’s voice that he rethought punishing them. “Are you at least safe?”
“Yes uncle, I’m feeling better now.” Leah said lightly, thankful that there was not a lecture coming but she did sense that something was wrong on the other end of the phone when they heard paper rustling and Ann’s voice which sounded worried. “Is everything ok?”
“No, Ann just got word that some of the New York vampires are headed in your general direction.” Tom said still rustling through the papers probably trying to find his map of all the vampire clans. “From what Ann has heard it the clan from the Catskills, it will take them a while to reach you.”
“Ok, thanks for the heads up.” Karen said taking the phone back and starting to hang up on her father until he said stop, “What?”
“I’m sending Scott out there to meet you. The taxi just got him and he’ll be on the Red Eye so he should be there in an hour.” Tom said knowing that Karen would have done something stupid if she didn’t have any of her brothers around her. “Karen just go back to the house and wait for Scott to call.”
“Understood,” Karen said with a little annoyance in her voice but not enough to make her father yell at her again. She hung up the phone and looked over to her cousin who just seemed to be staring off into space. Probably thinking about everything that has happened, Karen thought recalling the one-sided fight that broke out half an hour ago. “Come on they’ll be worried by now.”
The pair walked slowly down the sidewalk lost in their thoughts until they heard the familiar noise of friends calling for them to walk faster, which they did with a forced smile on both their faces so to not worry the others about the upcoming danger. Adam just took the lie; though he knew that Karen was forcing the sweet happy smile that he loved he also knew that it had to be for a good reason. Once they entered the house the girls saw that the others had tied Chris to the only chair in the room with duct tape and some rope. Karen couldn’t help but laugh at the sight and give him a thumb up to her lover who knew exactly what to do. Looking around she didn’t find any hidden cameras like the one that her father usually kept in his safe houses in case someone tried to break in or squat here. This must be a really old place, if he didn’t install his camera security system. Karen thought looking over to Leah and Adam to get the others out of the room.
“Guys, I think we should call it a night.” Leah said faking a yawn and stretching in front of her friends.
“I agree.” Anya said looking through her purse for her car keys. “Tyler, John I can give you guys a ride home.”
“I would love one, Anya my dear.” Tyler said gleefully inching closer to Anya trying to give her a hug when she wasn’t looking until it backfired when Anya heeled the poor boy in a place that made the other boys cringe.
“I think I’ll walk Anya, thanks for the offer.” John said feeling bad of Tyler.
“I’ll walk with you; I need to swing by my house anyway.” Leah piped in getting a cautious look from Karen. “I have to get my stuff for the thing tomorrow.”
“Ok but be careful.” Karen said calmly knowing that she was speaking code so they didn’t alarm her friends. “Come back when you’re done, I don’t care if you have to take a freaking taxi.” With her cousin’s cautious request in her mind Leah and John parted ways with Anya and Tyler who drove off in her red Jeep rather quickly and probably for a good reason, whatever it was Leah laughed at the thought of it.
“I missed your laugh tonight.” John said catching Leah off guard and silencing the laugh that he claimed to like. “Sorry didn’t mean to embarrass you.”
“It’s alright.” Leah said calmly “I’m really going to miss you guys.”
“What do you mean?” John questioned lightly touching her arm so they could stop and talk. “Where are you going?”
“Well, Mary’s been arrested, I figure that I would head back to Arizona with Karen.” Leah said noticing that they had stopped in front of her house. “There’s no reason for us to hang around so we’ll be leaving by Monday I think.”
“You can’t leave.” John said getting flustered that Leah was going to leave them without saying a word. “You have people here you care about you.”
“I already told Anya, she’s fine with my leaving and I’m almost fully packed.” Leah said trying not to hint at her true reason for leaving. “So I don’t see any reason for me to stay.”
“I don’t want you to go. Leah, I know that you and I have had a few problems and I have caused most of them, but Anya’s not the only one who cares about you.” John said probably saying more that he needed but thought it was a good start to finally telling the brunette 16 year old girl in front of him how he really felt, but when he opened his mouth and nothing came out he did the only thing that he could do and the only thing that he thought could be romantic was to grab Leah pulling her in close to him and kiss her.
She was shocked at first by his action, it took her a second to get the full effect of the kiss but by the time it hit her they were being pulled apart and she felt a familiar hand leave its impression on her face. Leah looked to see her aunt standing where John was with a look of disgust on her face that told Leah everything she needed to know. “Don’t worry, I’m only hear to grab the rest of my things and then I’m leaving.”
“I thought I taught you better than this. You know that witches and demons should never be together, but what do I expect from my sister’s daughter.” Mary said with hatred hanging on every word. “Where have you been all day?”
“I told you I was going to hang out with my friends tonight.” Leah stated pushing out John’s looks of surprise.
“Well, I hope you’re happy because the police came to arrest me today.” Mary stated trying to get her niece to expose the person who called the police to make a report. “Their captain received a tip that I was abusing my niece. Do you know anything about that?”
“Why would I? I didn’t make the call, but I’m glad someone did.” Leah said walking up to the side door that led to her room Mary following her and John behind the both of them in case the prosecution needed a witness, course protecting the woman he loved went through his brain first the witness part was just an afterthought for his defense in case he was arrested for Mary’s murder.
“How dare you!” Mary said grapping Leah by the arm when she reached for the doorknob, but Leah didn’t react she just looked at Mary giving her glares saying I dare you but those stares is what connected the dots for her aunt as to who called the police when no one had before. “Don’t tell me that the Reid’s are in New York.”
“So what if they are?” John chimed in before receiving a dirty look from Leah as she ripped her arm away from her aunt. “Did I say something wrong?”
“No, it’s fine. John will you help me with my things and then we’ll be going.” Leah said opening the door to see her grandfather standing on the other end. “Oh, I’m sorry if I woke you grandpa.”
“I was already up my dear. Did Karen give you the bag I had prepared?” He asked even though his daughter was standing next to Leah even more furious that her own father knew that the Reid’s were in town.
“Yes thank you.” Leah said hugging the old man tightly. “I’m just here to retrieve the rest of my things and then I’ll be heading back to Arizona with Karen.”
“Wait, you mean to tell me it’s that woman’s daughter who had me arrested on these false charges.” Mary said trying to defend herself despite the fact that John witnessed the slap she gave Leah about fifteen minutes ago.
“Enough Mary,” the old man shouted silencing both his daughter and granddaughter and they were both surprised to see him raise his voice out of anger an emotion that he had never shown before. “You will let Leah gather the rest of her belongings and let her leave. As for the charges brought against you I would happily testify against you.”
“Dad, I am the only family that cared for her.” Mary said in a feeble attempt to change her father’s mind.
“You gained your sister’s daughter by a flaw in the system; you don’t deserve to raise this wonderful girl.” He said as Mary backed down away and head back inside the house looking very much defeated which made Leah smirk a little but not enough to make anyone. “Now Leah, I think it’s best that we all get some sleep and gather your things tomorrow is that ok?”
“Yes grandfather.” Leah said glad that she could actually get some sleep after this extremely long night, “thank you again for everything.”
“You are welcome my dear.” He said hugging his granddaughter one more time before he headed to bed himself. “Are you going to stay with Karen tonight?”
“No, um, the safe house is a little cramped.” She said thinking of what would be going on between Karen and Adam and when the thought crossed her mind she felt like she was going to be very sick. “I’ll just stay at my friend John’s house. You have a guest room right?”
“Yeah, and you won’t be imposing my mom loves the company.” John said taking Leah’s hand and showing her the way after the door closed and her grandfather walked away. “Are you ok?”
“Thanks for letting me stay with you tonight.” Leah said ignoring his question and giving him a kiss on the cheek. “I really appreciate it.”
“Don’t worry about it.” John said blushing as they continued to walk in a happy silence holding hands not realizing that they were being followed.
