Chapter 7
The city looked the same but the buildings had changed, even though nothing else had changed, the homeless were still in ratty clothes and were still begging for change on street corners, that hadn’t changed much and he saw the wealthy still keeping their money far away from the dirty hands of the poor as far as he was concerned the people of New York stayed the same it was the buildings and technology that had changed. He continued his ride to Long Island, to the safe house he had left in disarray, he moved shortly after the end of the second war, he felt that it was time to leave so both he and Bryan packed what they had and drove out of the city and bounced around from place to place before finally Tom had fallen for another woman that he loved just as much as he loved his first wife and Bryan’s mother had the two finally settled down into a home that he had built by himself just like he had done during the Great Migration to the west.
He breathed in the air that he missed though he also tasted the humidity that made him feel like he was swimming in a small puddle; being in the desert for so long he forgot that the atmosphere held a small amount of water here. He decided to pass the safe house and continue to ride through the quite town that was filled with beautiful flowers and lush green grass, he figured that both Karen and Scott could hold the fort for a time until he was ready to make his own appearance and he was sure that Karen could use the time to hide Adam even though he knew that he had got onto the plane with her. Why the pair wanted to keep their relationship a secret was beyond him but he found their love story amusing either way.
Karen drove as fast as she could legally go in a small town like this while trying to maintain a low profile at the same time causing trouble for her distant relatives. At least that was what she was trying to do but there were times when she figured that even this simple task was impossible especially when she turned down Mary’s street. Karen noticed that all of Mary’s neighbors were staring at Leah thinking God knows what about her, so Karen did the only thing that she could think of and that was to glare back at all of them with the same nasty looks she gave to people back home, and some of them would put her mother to shame. Though once they reached Mary’s home, Leah made it clear that Karen had to stop the car despite Karen’s protests.
“Are you nuts?” She shouted knowing what Mary had done to her cousin since all of them were children.
“It’s a possibility, but I feel like I have to apologize.” Leah said lightly but Karen knew her tone was full of remorse.
“What the hell do you have to apologize for?” Karen questioned pressing the brake pedal slowing the car as they approached Mary’s house. Of course what they didn’t expect were the number of cops that littered the front porch. Once Leah saw all of them she felt a surge of panic for her youngest cousin and her grandfather.
“Leah!” Scott shouted as she leaped out of the car and ran as fast as she could up the few stairs meeting the police blockade.
“Shit!” Karen shouted, throwing the very expensive car into park and chasing the hormonal teen that panicked for the remainder of her mother’s family.
“Miss, I can’t let you anyone threw. The scene is still being processed.” The officer said pushing Leah away; not expecting her to fight back harder.
“Scene,” she said starting to panic even more, her mind picturing the worst possible situation, she continued to push her way past the first officer only to be stopped by a second who was somewhat stronger than the first and managed to hold on to Leah long enough so Karen and Scott could reach her.
“Leah.” Karen whispered reaching for the young girl noticing that her hair was no longer straight and neat as she had preferred, but tossed about and starting to tangle, and that her cheeks now held trails for the tears flooding from emerald green eyes. “Leah, look at me we’ll find Captain Morgan and talk to him about what happened.”
Karen shot a look at the rookie officer that stood in their way signaling for him to lead the three to where Captain Morgan was stationed which was at the back of the house underneath an old oak tree that stood at least seven stories high, Leah had stopped crying but Karen could smell that tears still ran down her cousin’s face even without her making a sound. Captain Morgan was a tall, slim man built to be a runner even though he had the military brilliance that could make him a general if he wanted the position. Karen had only heard about him through the stories that Tom would tell them as the children were falling asleep and many people think that it was these stories that her father told her that gave her such a unique view upon the world, truth is that Karen would have the same opinion whether her father told her those stories or not. As they approach the good Captain, Karen could tell that he had done little if any sleep in the past three days since they had last spoke which was the day that Mary had been arrested. Both Karen and Scott saw the look on his face tipping Karen off to the fact that she should be prepared to go back to Dr. Michaels
"Karen, I thought you would be in the city once Mary had been arrested," Morgan said shocked to find that Thomas's daughter was still in town.
"Something came up Sir." Karen said reacting the same way she would around her father. Capt. Morgan simply laughed at Karen as he referred how Thomas plans the same speech every time I've he was asked to leave after causing trouble though when he did find something he was usually right creating even more paperwork for his officers.
"So what did you find?" He asked not really caring about the answer and Karen knew that but felt that he should know considering the massacre she sensed.
"We found vampires at the airport" Karen stated knowing full well that the media worth saying that it had been a terrorist attack, the fact that Karen knew the truth set up red flags, in Morgan's mind this caused him to pull all three of them to the side, and Karen wasn't sure if she was going to jail or not, though she refused to drop her guard just like every cop she interacted with.
"What in god’s name are you doing at the airport?" Capt. Morgan said firmly considering that very few people knew of the fact that their peers had attacked the airport.
"Well originally it was to pick up Scott," she said pointing to her brother "then we got ambushed by the tribe from the Skills and they are now extinct."
"Actually that's not true; their leader got away." Leah said recalling his beach to him after she had been thrown into the column and Karen transformed. "There was a third party in the darkness that scared him off."
"Interesting," Morgan said mostly to himself as he thought of who could have scared off the leader aside from Karen with in her transformation and considering that Thomas had not been anywhere near this city when the attack happened at least that is what he hoped for, that he would ask Tom about that later.
"You're thinking that he showed up and helped us." Karen stated catching Morgan's train of thought and knew it was the right target, once she saw the look in his eyes.
"Yes. Aside from your father; he is the only other being that I know of who can frighten off a vampire leader the way you set."
This new evidence of what happened tonight to go big Karen very and easy and she felt that what happened in Mary's house tonight was payback for the slaughter of their tribe that she felt something worse than vampires. She wasn't sure what the Demon Lord’s aura felt like but she knew Christopher all too well and the fact that she sensed him all over various property scared her right down to the core, and it barely gave her enough courage to ask Capt. Morgan the question that had been bugging her the entire time she was there. "Capt. Morgan, what happened here?"
Capt. Morgan look to Leah first before either of the siblings and sure if the girl should know of another family tragedy. Leah knew the decision that was on Capt. Morgan's mind and she prepared herself for the worst when she saw the cops standing in front of her house. "It's okay Capt. Morgan, big girl now, I can handle it."
"Very well then," Capt. Morgan side trying to dig up the courage to tell this 15-year-old girl that someone had broken into her on home and didn't leave anyone alive. "Am sorry Leah but no one survived."
"Do you have any suspects?" Leah questioned trying to maintain a sense of composure as her mind tried to understand what this man was saying.
"No ma'am not at this time; however based on what we found here we do believe that this may have been retaliation for what happened at the airport." Capt. Morgan said this with as much compassion as he could for this young girl while trying to drown the glares that he had been receiving from Karen. Capt. Morgan was well aware of previous parents and their accident. When the girl moved into the city Tom had called and informed him of the newest resident and also asked Morgan to watch out for his niece which he did quite well for the past decade because she was a resident of his town not because she was the niece of his best friend from the good old days. He kept his eyes on the girl who was being surprisingly calm throughout this whole ordeal and for some reason he felt compelled to let Tom know what happened once he had finished talking to her.
Morgan was surprise she reacted the way she did considering the news that she had just received. Morgan couldn't see any sadness in fact at this point Morgan began to wonder if the girl held any feelings for this side of her family at all, in fact what kept him from yelling at Leah’s calm expression was the way Karen had reacted.
"I'm sure that you will do everything in your power Capt."
"We should go." Karen said placing her arm around Leah because she knew that her cousin was going to break down and cry once they were far from the house. "Scott can you start the car take Leah with you I've need to have a word with Capt. Morgan."
Scott simply nodded taking Leah’s hand firmly in his head in his and led her the way they came to Tom's old car while Karen talk to Morgan about what she was going to do with the people who killed her aunt and husband at least that's what Scott thought as both he and Leah in headed for the car.
Karen took a minute until she was sure that both she and Capt. Morgan were alone and were not going to be disturbed by any of his officer.
"What would you like to talk about Karen?" Capt. Morgan said getting slightly likely impatient with her.
"I wanted to know if you use statistics of you catching the creatures before I do." Karen said as calmly as she could considering that she was currently surrounded by cops and all of them with their weapons in handcuffs not to mention all human so if a cop heard her she figured that they would arrest her so fast her head would spin, so she kept her voice low enough so only Morgan could hear her. And here hurt he did he actually almost fell from under his feet at which she just told him though he recovered quickly he couldn't hide her anger on his face or in his voice once he regained the ability to talk, "are you out of your mind." He hissed pulling her side to the bench behind them. "I cannot let you run around my district hunting clan of vampires at least the remainder of clan for your own personal vengeance."
"Well you need to hire a Hunter anyway and you know that both Scott and I are two of the best hunters in the country."
"I cannot lead to this job you are too involved with this one."
"To involve my ass Capt." Karen shouted lightly to put the force behind her words showing him how angry she was getting. "If I were emotionally compromised I wouldn't have told you that I was going to kill the guys that slaughtered this family."
"You're own family," Capt. Morgan correct it, "Leah is your cousin and she is related by blood and you are related to Leah."
"Capt. I do not care if you think that I’m personally involved, but I’ll tell you this and listen carefully, I know where my limits are because I was trained by Tom. This crime scene has nothing to do with my ability as a hunter." Karen stated starting to draw attention to her by getting into the Captain’s face.
"All right, Karen calm down." Morgan said in a tranquil voice trying not to get her so upset that she lost patrol of her ability and expose the underground world of human life. He spent many years gaining trust and rest back from the man of his precinct since he was posted there. "I am only thinking of your safety."
"I can take care of myself." Karen said backing down once she noticed one of the officers was looking in their direction.
"Is everything okay?" A young officer questions looking slightly concerned.
"Yes, Karen is a friend of the family that was killed; just give her moment." Capt. Morgan said trying to prove his point by talking to with third-party.
"I'm not emotional." She argued slightly crossing her arms in front of her chest as she began sizing up the young man. He looked cute enough if she cared for the blonde hair blue eyes German heritage type with this slim build though you can see some muscle definition through his shirt she also noticed a small dimple on his left cheek and he smiled at her, a politeness she did not return.
"The crime scene team has finished us and we are ready to close."
"Very well," Morgan said dismissing the young officer who smiled at Karen once again then turned to give the order to the rest of the unit. "I know that you won't listen to me when I tell you to stay away from this investigation, but be warned Karen Alexandria Reid if I catch you interfering I will arrest you and charge you with obstruction."
"Understood," Karen said beginning to walk away heading back to her cousin and brother. Capt. Morgan whispered something in here and just before she left because as much as his instinct told him to keep her away you knew that his concern for his best friend's daughter was more important than any legal obligation he was entitled to. Karen simply nodded and continued to walk to her father's car to take her cousin to John's house, never noticing the pair of eyes watching her leave this scene though she did feel a disturbing presence all the way back to where her brother stood.
"So what did you have to talk to Morgan about?" Scott asked, though he probably knew the answer, but was glad that Karen had talked to him instead of Scott.
"The likelihood of me catching the son of a bitch before he does," Karen muttered quietly under her breath until she knew that three of them were far away from officer ears.
“Oh that’s brilliant Karen let’s just flaunt our business in front of the Chief of the New York Police Department.” Scott said getting into the passenger side of their father’s car. “You know that he’s going to have every patrol car on you like kids with candy.”
“I know.” Karen said as they sped off for their alternative living arrangements. “I just want to see his face when I hand him this things head. Too close to it my ass.”
